Oppose AB 84/Episode 16

Welcome to Homeschool Horizons! I’m Yvette, your host! Well, everyone, things are really heavy all over the world as you all know and in the state in which I live. There are so many things happening that have me in a state of disbelief, anger, fear, just so many emotions. I would gladly talk about all of it here, but I won’t since I began my podcast to share my homeschooling journey and offer you information. So that is what I will give you today! More information on AB 84.

In my last episode I typed all of the names of the senators that you can call and placed it right above my podcast transcript. You can call these senators every day! We only have 3 more weeks left before the senate makes their decision. If you are wondering if you should get involved in asking the senators to oppose AB 84, let me tell you that if this bill passes, ALL of homeschooling will be affected by it. Not just the charters. I’ve heard some people on social media talking about how if AB 84 passes, they will file a PSA. I actually said I would do that myself. However, that would only last for a little while because if this passes, the California Teachers Association abbreviated (CTA) will go after PSAs next. In my opinion, the goal of the CTA is to have every single child under the age of 18 in one of their public schools. They do not want any child to be homeschooled at all.

The CTA views every homeschooling child as dollars lost. They want that child enrolled in one of their public schools because they want that child’s money from the state. They simply don’t understand that homeschoolers are not taking money from them. I recently read an article written by a fellow homeschooling mom named Windi Eklund which was recently published in The Orange County Register and in it she stated this, and I quote “it was recently revealed during a budget hearing that during the rapid expansion of Universal Pre-K, the state misallocated millions of dollars in early education funding. This allocation went undetected for at least two years and was only flagged during the 2025-26 budget planning cycle. So far, heads haven’t rolled.” (End quote)

Wow! You want to know what I think of that? I think that basically, the state does who knows what with all the money they’re supposed to use for their schools, their teachers, and their students, and then wants to use our homeschoolers and the charters as their excuse as to why they don’t have all of their money! It is so ridiculous! I’m super proud of Windi Eklund and if she ever hears this podcast, “Windi I am so proud of you for writing this piece and so happy for you that it got published!”

There are so many homeschool moms fighting right now any way that they can for us and for our children! It brings me comfort to know how hard they are fighting and it only makes me want to do my part as well! I encourage you to call the senators please! It’s really easy! All you do is call the number and when the person answers you say, “Hello, I am a concerned homeschool mom, grandma, parent, etc.” Then you say, “I am asking that the senator please oppose AB 84.” That’s it! The person on the other end of the line will ask you for your name, city, or zip code. But some of them don’t ask anything. They just thank you for calling and tell you that they will let the senator know. It is so important that you and I do this daily or as much as we possibly can from now until July 16th. Because between us calling, and other homeschool moms going to the capitol and to their local district senators’ offices, we are making our voices heard loudly and consistently. If we keep doing this, we can defeat this bill!

I will put the names of the senators to call at the top of my podcast transcript again today. I want to thank you for listening today! Have a wonderful week! And I really mean that! In these difficult times we have to focus on the things that happen during our days and weeks that are good! The good things bring us joy and hope. I’d like to share a verse from the Bible which is found in the Book of Philippians Chapter 4 verse 8. This is what it says, “Finally, brothers whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – If anything is excellent or praiseworthy, think of these things.” That’s what we all need to focus on right now. So have a wonderful week and I will talk to you soon!
