Dr. Daniel G. Amen and the Amen Clinic/Episode 21

Welcome to Homeschool Horizons! I’m Yvette, your host! Have you guys ever heard about the Amen Clinic? I did, like 15 years ago when I worked for a foster and adoption care agency. I worked in a new program that was developed for adoptive families by the County of Los Angeles. The program was called Adoption Promotion Support Services and it was called APSS for short. My role in the program was to provide support to adoptive families by sharing my own experience after having adopted a teenager. I worked alongside counselors and social workers. From time to time, we would be sent to seminars where we would learn valuable information that would help us in our line of work.

On one occasion, we were sent to listen to a doctor speak about his new discovery performing tomography’s or what I call brain scans. His name was Dr. Daniel G. Amen. Dr. Amen showed us how his use of SPECT (single-photon emission computed tomography could show trauma in the brain. A brain with trauma would result in an adult or a child displaying extremely challenging behaviors due to feeling so much anger or anxiety inside. Dr. Amen shared that the trauma could be healed with nutrition and supplements. He specified how once the brain was healed, the person would no longer display the challenging behaviors and they would feel better!

On his website, danielamenmd.com I read that Dr. Amen is a physician, adult and child psychiatrist. He is the founder of the Amen Clinics with 11 locations across the U.S. Amen Clinics has the world’s largest database of brain scans for psychiatry totaling more than 225,000 SPECT scans on patients from 155 countries! You can read more about him yourself on the website I just mentioned.

So, how does this relate to homeschooling? Well, I have a friend whose son was wreaking havoc in their home. He was only 8 years old, but suffering with so much anger and anxiety that he was causing immense chaos which made it extremely challenging to homeschool as effectively as she wanted to. I told my friend about the Amen Clinic because she had tried everything to help him and nothing was working. She looked completely wiped out and desperate for help. Well, she ended up taking her son to the Amen Clinic and she will actually be here next week sharing their story!

Homeschooling is not just about academics. As homeschool moms we get to help our children in many aspects of their lives. Perhaps you are a mom who has been suffering in silence for a long time because you have a child who is also suffering and you have done everything you can and nothing has worked.

My hope is that in my sharing about Dr. Amen today and with what you will hear next week from my friend, that it will perhaps offer you a solution that will benefit your child as well as your entire family. So be sure to listen next week! I will post the website for the Amen Clinic at the top of my podcast in case you want to check it out before listening to my interview next week. Thank you so much for listening today! Have a wonderful week. Talk you soon!
