AB84 in Suspense File

         Welcome to Homeschool Horizons! I’m Yvette, your host! Hey everybody, I told you I would give you an update on what happened this past Monday with AB84 right? So, this is what happened! The Senate Appropriations Committee decided to move AB84 to their Suspense file. I, of course, being so new to all of this have never even heard of a Suspense File. All of this is super new to me you guys! I’m learning the process of our legislative system right along with you! 

          Apparently when a bill goes to the Suspense File, it usually dies there. I saw an update from Denise Aguilar Mendez from the Freedom Angels and she actually posted this on Monday while she was at the Capitol and here it is, I quote “Update from the California Capitol. AB84, AB727, and AB495 have all been moved to the suspense file. This is where some bills quietly go to die based on how much it will cost California. From now until the 29th (when the suspense file hearing will take place) we have to work our tail off! We have a strong path to defeat AB84, so please contact your State Senator and Assembly Member today! If you don’t know who they are go to FindYourRep.Legislature.Ca.Gov” end quote. 

         So, what does this mean? In my opinion, I take it to mean that they are taking forever to make the final decision on whether or not to pass or not pass AB84! But, like I said a few episodes ago, we probably won’t truly know what will happen to charters until maybe this December. 

         This coming Friday is when the suspense file hearing will take place. Bottom line is continue calling your State Senator and Assembly Member especially if they are democrats who are not saying that they will vote no on AB84. I say this, because I found out that my State Senator and Assembly Member have voted no on AB84 and have said that they will continue to oppose it. So, I don’t have to call them. But I can continue to call the Appropriations Committee and so can you. I will post their names and numbers at the top of this episode, so that you can continue calling this them this week too. 

         But, trust me, I know this is a lot! At the very least, find out who your State Senator and Assembly Member is and call them every day until the bill finally reaches the senate floor because at that point, all of the senators will vote on it before it goes to the governor. By the way, you can also call after hours. So, if you find yourself as busy as I am all day long, you can call them at night and leave a message! You don’t even have to talk to anyone! You just leave your name, the city you’re calling from, and tell them to please oppose AB84. You can also tell them to oppose AB495. Remember that I told you that this bill means anyone can go to a public or private school and withdraw a child without parental consent. All they need is a form that they can obtain online. They don’t have to show identification either. 

         To be honest, it’s all of this is very overwhelming! I mean I wish I could just close my ears and eyes and not know about any of it. These bills are heavy and they weigh on me whether I want them to or not. But the thing is, now that I do know about some of these bills, I can’t help but want to do my part to make sure they don’t become law. That’s why I keep talking about it on my podcast. The Freedom Angels and all the moms that drove up to Sacramento this past week are doing way more than I am. I truly admire them and I thank them for doing what they do for ALL of us! 

         I know all of these moms will be in Sacramento again this coming Friday. Let’s pray for them and if you can, support them monetarily too. The Freedom Angels aren’t rich! They are regular homeschool moms just like all of us. Sometimes they will post a link where we can support them monetarily. If you join the app BAND, you can see when they are in need of financial support, but I’ve also seen them post it on Facebook too. Because often times, they stay in Sacramento up to a couple of days. For example, this month they’ve already been there twice and this week will be the third time. But if you can’t help them financially, you can always pray for them! Let’s pray that God continues to protect them and that He will always provide the means for them to continue advocating for us.
