The Browns are back at the microphones after a busy April hiatus, returning with their signature blend of basketball talk and life reflections that make Hoops and Crumbs so delightful.

Esteban kicks things off with a lively NBA playoffs update, sharing his excitement about matchups like Detroit versus New York and the Lakers taking on Minnesota. For basketball enthusiasts, his breakdown provides the perfect appetizer before the episode dives into deeper waters.

The heart of this episode revolves around a series of thought-provoking questions that Maria and Esteban take turns asking each other. Their answers reveal fascinating glimpses into their personalities and perspectives. When asked who he would choose as presidential advisors, Esteban thoughtfully selects family members known for their intelligence, along with his basketball coach for physical and emotional support—a choice that reflects both his values and priorities.

Perhaps the most engaging moment comes during their debate about whether money can buy happiness. This generational difference in perspective creates a moment many families will recognize and relate to.

Other highlights include discussions about what makes their blended family unique, who Maria would choose for a dream dinner party (Victoria Beckham, Oprah, and Jason Bateman at dim sum), and whether it's better to excel at one skill or be competent in many.

Listen now to experience this warm, genuine conversation between mother and son, and stay tuned for their promised Mother's Day special episode coming soon!

Welcome to Hoops and Crumbs

Speaker 1

Welcome to Hoops and Crumbs with the Browns , the podcast where life lessons are baked in like chocolate chips . I'm Maria Brown .

Speaker 2

And I'm Estevan Brown . Together we're talking basketball , life and everything in between . Whether we're ducking on the court or in the milk , there's always something cooking .

Speaker 1

So grab a snack and tune in .

Speaker 2

So , mama , what are we eating today ?

Speaker 1

I am eating not a cookie , but something very delicious called a quiche Quiche something very delicious called a quiche . But the special thing about this quiche is that I used leftover matzo bread from Passover for the crust and it is delicious Cheesy , bacon-y , onion-y deliciousness . You don't like it ? No , I don't really love it .

Speaker 2

It's not my favorite thing in the world . I don't really like peppers . I don't know if I really like onions . That it no . I don't really love it . It's not my favorite thing in the world . I don't really like peppers . I don't know if I really like onions that much , but you know , I'm happy to see you're finally enjoying something .

Speaker 1

Well , after this episode , we can make some Easter egg cookies with the leftover Easter eggs that we have downstairs .

Speaker 2

Yeah , sounds fun .

Speaker 1

All right . Well , what's going on in the world of basketball these days ?

NBA Playoffs Update

Speaker 1

Something called playoffs .

Speaker 2

Yeah . So the playoffs are happening . I don't know if any of the listeners are tuning in . Probably if you're listening to a basketball podcast , you're tuning into the NBA playoffs but we've got a lot of exciting teams , exciting games going on . Actually , like right now , we have the Detroit Pistons just lost to the New York Knicks by one point . Is that good or bad ? Well , I mean , it doesn't matter to me , but New York goes up 3-1 . So if any of our listeners live in Detroit , that is very upsetting for you . I think New York is probably my pick to win . Larger market team , older squad , more experience there in the playoffs last year . That's all happening Right now . Lakers beating the Minnesota Timberwolves by two points in the first quarter , lebron James leading scorer LeBron James leading scorer Ding ding ding ding ding .

Speaker 2

Lebron has five points , hasn't missed yet . So that's great Love to see the goat go off . I love to see the goat go off . And then at seven we have Celtics Magic , at nine we have Pacers Bucks . The other day , actually , we had our first playoff series and Oklahoma swept the Memphis Grizzlies 4-0 . They won by 50 points in game one . That is not a fun win .

Speaker 1

Not a fun loss .

Speaker 2

It's a pretty fun win .

Speaker 1

But yeah , playoffs are happening All right , so it's like Christmas time for you . Yeah , it's great you know , games every other hour , so does that mean that you don't need a Christmas gift this ?

Speaker 1

year no no , no , all right , all right

Returning to Podcasting

Speaker 1

, all right . Well , it's been a long time since we've been at the microphones . We've had a very busy April , so we have not been very diligent with podcasting . One thing I've learned is that you really need to devote time to researching what you're going to talk about , devote time in your calendar to be able to create these podcasts . And we just got super busy and fell off the podcasting truck , so we needed a bit of help In preparation for this episode . We turned to the internet for some inspiration and we found an amazing list of 50 thought-provoking questions . So I think what we're going to do this is supposed to be our fourth quarter convo , but I think what we'll do is we'll just take turns asking each other questions from the list , and maybe we'll do five each . Some of these questions are so funny ,

Thought-Provoking Questions Begin

Speaker 1

some of them are a little bit more thought provoking . So what do you think ? Yep , sounds fun . All right , do you want to go first , or should I ask first ?

Speaker 2

You can ask the first question , okay .

Speaker 1

I will ask the first question . Okay , Esteban , imagine you're the president and you need to have three people to assist you .

Speaker 2

Who would you pick , mind the chewing ? I'm just snacking on a little chocolate Easter egg here , but I think that's hard . Does it have to be people I know , or just anybody ?

Speaker 1

Well , I mean , I think it should be people , you know . I mean not like they don't have to be people in your friend's circle , I think it's people in general , not just an idea of a person . Hmm , okay .

Speaker 2

I think , first off , I would probably go with my Uncle Robert . He's an engineer , a very smart engineer at that , and a very funny one , and obviously I would love to have family around To keep in track with family . I think who else this is ?

Speaker 1

hard . Well , you're not going to hurt anybody's feelings .

Speaker 2

No , I guess not . I think I would probably go with my Uncle Andy . I think Uncle Andy is probably the smartest person I know . Those are two very smart people you've picked . And lastly , I think for purely emotional support , because I think I've already kind of covered the biggest two factors , I think for emotional support , I would probably pick who's like the funniest person . I know the rock well , I don't know him , though .

Speaker 1

I think jesus heart I know we need some hold music while you're thinking we're not that technologically advanced yet I think coach row , coach row , all right , so that I could get some basketball working while I'm the president I guess you will . In order to be an effective leader , you should be in top physical shape so that would be a good .

Speaker 2

That's a good way to look at it yeah , and then obviously , you know , I can still contact my friends and family .

Speaker 1

Yeah , yeah , this is just your inner circle . You're who you go to the meetings with . Ok , yeah , all right , good answers , uncle Robert , uncle Andy , coach Ro .

Speaker 2

Yeah , all right . So next I have a question for you . There's a lot of questions here . There's a lot of questions here . Uh , what is ?

Speaker 1

what do you think is keeping you from your complete happiness ? Jeez man , you like the hard ones . Uh , when you clean your room , what ? Uh ? I don't think actually this is a . This is a really good question , because I don't see happiness as something to achieve or strive for . I think you should just naturally choose to be happy , and there's going to be roadblocks in your day , like maybe you get a bad mark on your test or you have a bad presentation or somebody bumps your car , but I don't think that it should stop you from being unhappy . Like , I think your general outlook should just be happy .

Speaker 1

And you're blowing your nose right now . Everybody's going to be able to hear that , so we're just going to keep talking about it . Pauline man , hear that , so we're just gonna keep talking about it . And oh , holland man , yeah , yeah , that can . That also stops us from complete happiness . Allergies in this family they run rampant , but no , I think I . I think you have to live your life as though it is your one life . You know you're happy every day . Sometimes things go bad in a day , like you spill your milk , but at the end of the day you're just happy . So I don't think anything is keeping me from complete happiness . I have a happy child , I have a happy husband . I have a happy life . What more can you ask for ? Yeah , I know what I can ask for .

Speaker 1

Yeah it's not your turn to answer a question ? Oh , but it is . It is your turn to answer a question yes , it is All right . Let me ask you this what product would you stockpile if you found out it wasn't going to be sold anymore ? What product ?

Speaker 2

would I stockpile if it wasn't going to be sold anymore ? So does this mean I have to go ahead and purchase this product with my own money ?

Speaker 1

Well , just think of when it was COVID and everybody bought toilet paper . Like everybody stockpiled toilet paper because they were worried they couldn't .

Speaker 2

It wasn't going to be sold anymore . Yeah , that's also pretty tough because there's a lot of products out there . You know that people want and demand for I think I think I would have to go with . No , you're rushing me .

Speaker 1

I don't know , I don't know , is it something to eat ? Is it something milk ? Oh , you're going to stockpile the milk , are you ?

Speaker 2

First of all , it's healthy . Every you know people love milk , cereal , cookies . Am I right ? Secondly , I drink milk . And third , if milk is already like relatively expensive , like 12 bag , $12 for a bag of milk , get out of here .

Speaker 1

It's not $12 for a bag of milk . Get out of here . It's not $12 for a bag of milk .

Speaker 2

How much is a three bag ?

Speaker 1

A bag that we buy of milk is maybe $4 , maybe $5 . What milk are you buying ? The milk that you drink once a week is probably $5 for a bag .

Speaker 2

Okay . Well , even then I could buy it for $5 . It stops selling . People are going gonna be on demand for milk . Bam , I just sell them a bunch of milk . I just like quadrupled my profit , basically okay . If it's five , I sell it for 20 . Bam , that is roi . Okay , then also , you can drink it , cook with it and eat it . And how are you gonna make dolce with no leche ?

Speaker 2

okay , all right , good answer milk yeah , so I think we flip it back to me yeah , okay , yeah , okay . What makes our family feel unique Like ? What is unique about it ?

Speaker 1

Oh well , I mean , it's not very unique because there's lots of blended families , but I think you in in the house that we live in together , it's a blended family right , there's you and me and Jeff has his family , and together we are one family . But I think what makes it unique is that we celebrate all the traditions that we would celebrate as separate families together . So , for example , if you don't know , listeners , esteban and I , we are Christian . We celebrate Christmas and Easter and all of the Christian celebrations or festivities , and we live in a Jewish home . So you heard me say Passover earlier . So we celebrate every other Jewish tradition , um , every other jewish tradition . We often have big uh dinners here for the jewish traditions , like hanukkah , um yeah , so I think that makes it kind of unique . We get to do the best of both worlds , which I really enjoy doing actually yeah , um , I think it's your turn now .

Speaker 1

Okay , oh , you know what I really like this question .

Speaker 2

If you could make one rule that everyone

Can Money Buy Happiness?

Speaker 2

in the world had to follow , what would it be ? That LeBron's the GOAT ? Okay , because I'm tired of hearing that . Mj's the GOAT . What about Kobe ? Out of the conversation ? Okay , okay , because I'm tired of hearing that MJ's the GOAT . What about Kobe ? I'm out of the conversation , it's okay , okay . So , if I'm being honest , one rule everybody had to follow , I think it would be how do you enforce this rule ? Like , how is said rule enforced ?

Speaker 1

Well , you're the president , with uncle Robert , uncle Andy and coach row .

Speaker 2

So so so what you're saying is burpees .

Speaker 1

Yeah , he would enforce it by burpees burpees and suicides .

Speaker 2

Yeah , so I think I think you have to . This is hard . I'm asking these hard questions . You can ask them too , but then I don't know . You think better than me . You have to finish your collegiate degree . I'm that kid just fell .

Speaker 1

Oh , that sucks .

Speaker 2

He just tripped on a stone and fell right on his face .

Speaker 1

Oh , poor kid well , you know what that's interesting ? That everyone has to go to school , because , uh , jeff and I , we went to slovenia a few years ago and the government pays for you to go to university . So most people in Slovenia , although it's a small country , are university educated and there is incentives for them , or there are incentives for them to continue on with their university studies . So get master's degrees or PhD degrees and it develops a very interesting , educated , broad minded society .

Speaker 2

Yeah , that's what I think All right , because I would also like pretty similar add incentives . Also , I would probably make community colleges more educating . So like they might not be perfect now because I don't have the funding as other colleges , but I think community college should be funded by the government Alright . So I think everybody should have to finish out a term or should at least have to go to like one year of college or university . That's a pretty good rule so that we have a better , more educated , know world population . That's cool . So is it your turn or my ?

Speaker 2

well , I asked you a question yeah , you just asked me a question , so I think , okay , this is a bit more of a silly one . If you could eat dinner with three people you don't know , who would it be ? Where would you go and why ? How do I pick them if I don't know them ? Well , like , like , maybe three celebrities ? Oh , like three people . You've always wanted to meet people you've heard of okay .

Speaker 1

Well , I would totally want to go for . Dim sum is one , because I like the communal aspect of dim sum and it's usually pretty quick . So if you're not having a good time , just eat your dumpling and bounce .

Speaker 2

But then what if it becomes like the greatest time ever and then you have to leave ?

Speaker 1

Yeah , but if it's the greatest time ever , you just keep ordering dishes , so that's one . I would go for dim sum Two , three people , I don't know .

Speaker 2

Yeah , you can't know them . I can't know them . Like maybe they can be connected through a mutual friend . Like maybe your friends told you like I've always wanted you to meet this dime , she's so funny , she's just like you , she loves fashion and cooking . And her son Okay , there's one loves fashion and cooking .

Speaker 1

Oh , you know what , and her son . Okay , there's one . I would like to go for dinner with Victoria Beckham , because I bet she's really funny . Who's ?

Speaker 2

that .

Speaker 1

She's what Posh Spice yo the youth today . So I would go for dim sum with Victoria Beckham , Definitely with Oprah .

Speaker 2

Oh , this one woman From the Spice .

Speaker 1

Girls . Yes , posh Spice , posh Spice Oprah and Oprah . Yep , yep , because I think Oprah would probably be pretty funny at dinner , and Jason Bateman because I think Jason Bateman is hilarious . What Jason Bateman , oprah P . Jason Bateman is hilarious . What Jason Bateman , oprah Posh . Spice Dim Sum . I'm buying .

Speaker 2

What Jason Bateman movies have you seen ?

Speaker 1

Like almost all of them , and also what's one of the greatest podcasts out there Smartless Hello . Oh , I'm thinking of the wrong .

Speaker 2

Jason . What's the person I'm thinking of ?

Speaker 1

I don't know , but I'm ready to ask you a question . Okay , are you ready ? Yeah , shoot .

Speaker 2

Are you ready ? Are you ready ? Yes , shoot .

Speaker 1

What do you feel is the hardest job in the world , and why ?

Speaker 2

I'm thinking of Jason Statham , anyways , hardest job in the . Oh , I'm thinking of Jason Statham , anyways , hardest job in the world . I don't know , that's tough . Um , maybe a nature specialist interesting , like , like what the wild kratts do . Are those real people ? Yeah , they're real people , but they just made a cartoon based on their like . They had a show where they actually did this stuff , okay but they just made a cartoon .

Speaker 2

But like , like , imagine the intimidation of , like meeting these animals for the first time , like I don't know , it's just so difficult . Either that or a long-distance pilot would also be difficult , but that's not like difficult . That's difficult in a different way , where it's more just like this is very tiring , like I feel like being a , a wildlife , like photographer would be very actually no wartime photographer because they , because uncle and you , papa's friend , not like my birth blood uncle , he was a wartime photographer .

Speaker 2

He's been shot like his . Like that is a hard job to have , because you can't carry protection like as a photographer . You're not , you're not allowed to just walk in with a gun right , you have to , you're . You're just like , basically , you're just a civilian that goes into battle and just takes pictures . That's a hard , hard job to have . You , you don't have protection , you don't really have armor . The only thing that I know he had is like this insane life insurance policy . That's like the only thing that they really have . Aside from like that , they really just don't get anything . Like they , they just get food , some gear and then like a camera , but they don't , they don't get to protect themselves . They're just kind of out there . It's , it's like a . It's genuinely like . Like a fish , like a random baby fish just swimming with a pack of fishes being hunted by a shark .

Speaker 1

Like a random baby fish just swimming with a pack of fishes being hunted by a shark . Well , and it is important work to do because atrocities have to be documented , so I guess that would be a very difficult job .

Speaker 2

Yeah , all right , your turn . Oh yeah , my turn . Huh , do you believe , money can or can't buy happiness ?

Speaker 1

I do not believe money can buy happiness .

Speaker 2

What .

Speaker 1

I do not believe it . I think that it's . I think you can be happy without you know , the material goods . I think you can be happy in a small house . I think certainly it makes life easier in some cases . I certainly wouldn't be happy if I didn't have somewhere warm to sleep at night . And that takes money , you know , and it's nice to be able to share your resources and money with people that don't have it . It probably makes them happy to have goodness come their way . But I do not think you need money to be happy . I think it helps you to be comfortable so that it takes away any noise that can come up that could stand in the way of your happiness , but I don't think money buys you happiness .

Speaker 2

We're on opposite sides of this . I absolutely think money can buy you happiness . I would be the happiest person in the world if I just had a billion dollars in my bank account .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I feel like Elon is probably not the happiest person in the world .

Speaker 2

Okay , but that's because he's not using his money to his advantage . He has so much money he can do whatever he wants . He can buy a lot of things right . That would make me pretty darn happy if I could just wake up and be like oh , I'm bored , I'm gonna buy a new lamborghini today . Um , oh , shoot , oh , a new louis vuitton just just dropped . I've got , I've got to get all all 10 colors of that bag yeah , but what do you know ?

Speaker 2

what I ? I'm going to go take my 17th private jet to Paris . I'm going to fly it myself because I'm bored and I'm going to drive there in my Maybach . And then I'm going to eat caviar in the pilot seat because I can't be told what to do .

Speaker 2

Oh my goodness . And then I would have a big house with a go-kart track around the back . My gosh , I would love to be rich . I would have a huge house in texas where I could just put it , because you know how much open land there is in texas . I would just put a big go-kart track back there and it would just like like I would buy so much land . Okay , there would be a go-kart track , an amusement park . I don't even like amusement parks , I would have it just for the flex .

Speaker 2

A water park there would be food stands . Oh my gosh money can buy happens .

Speaker 1

All right then . Well , I guess we know who's going to be working really , really hard for these 17 jets .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I don't think 17 jets is going to happen anytime soon .

Speaker 1

Okay , I think you answered my question . No , I answered your question and you put it back . I answered my own question .

Speaker 2

So this is the third question . So now you're asking me the third question . Has it only been ?

Speaker 1

three questions yes , oh man . Okay , describe yourself in five words or less .

Speaker 2

Go Five words or less . Go Basketball , car Wait , no , Restart . Sports , music , cars , fashion enthusiasts I mean I love all those things . I'm dressed very nicely right now . I always listen to music . I mean , I love all those things . I'm dressed very nicely right now . I always listen to music . I do play sports and if I had a BMW M3 , I'd be gone in a dash . Okay , that was a quick one . Yeah so now flip it back to me .

Speaker 1

Yeah , you ask me .

Speaker 2

Okay , okay , ask me , okay , okay , if , if we lost everything we own today , but you could keep three things , what would those three things be ?

Speaker 1

um so three material goods I like .

Speaker 2

I don't have to say like you don't not keep you not me not , jeff not nothing living , like everything that's alive .

Speaker 1

You can keep Got it , so like you can keep the fish tank Material goods . What three material goods would I keep ? Your grandfather's pens , your grandfather's watch and , I guess , my phone really because it will have all of our pictures in it .

Speaker 1

Good answers , actually wait . Phone really , because it will have all of our pictures in it . Good answers , uh , actually wait . Yeah , I guess the phone , like I was gonna say well , there's a box of pictures behind you that I'd want to keep . Maybe I would take that . You know what I would take , that I would take the box of things that are right behind you , because there's a bunch of mementos from the past and the phone , like whatever the phone's , the phone , the pictures are already in the cloud .

Speaker 2

That was quick as well , yeah . Next , we're lightning fast .

Speaker 1

Fourth question we're lightning fast , it's almost nap time . Oh , okay , man , some of these questions are so good . I'm going to put the link to this website in the description of the podcast so that everyone that's listening can also ask these questions of each other . Okay , oh , I don't know , this might be Watch

Planning Our Next Episode

Speaker 1

how you answer this , because you don't want to get in trouble . Which of your friends do you think I like most , and why ? Probably Jackson . Oh , okay , why Jackson ?

Speaker 2

Well , first , he's smart , he's driven , he's respectful . You think he's respectful ?

Speaker 1

Well , he is a very polite young man . He eats his veggies . He does eat his veggies , which we definitely approve of .

Speaker 2

You love that he likes veggies . I think it's nice to have that . You love that kids like veggies .

Speaker 1

It's eat his veggies , which we definitely approve of . You love that he likes veggies . I think it's nice to have .

Speaker 2

You love that kids like veggies .

Speaker 1

It's good to be healthy .

Speaker 2

And I don't know , he's funny , I guess I think probably Jackson . I think there's other people too that I could put up there , like maybe , maybe Satya or Alec . I don't really think so , though , but I don't know . What do you ?

Speaker 1

answer it . I'm not going to answer , I'll bleep it out . That's mean .

Speaker 2

Just tell me no . Who is it Bleep ? Who is ?

Speaker 1

it . I just answered it . Okay , ask me one more question , and I and I think that's five and five- no , because that was your fourth . This is my fourth .

Speaker 2

So then we have one more .

Speaker 1

All right go ahead ?

Speaker 2

Okay , yeah , I know . Okay . Do you think it's better to have one really great skill , like one skill you're really really good at Like I'm just insane at math or do you think you'd rather have like a bunch of skills that you're all right , like like I'm a math ? Would you rather be like super smart at one thing or just smart at multiple things ?

Speaker 1

uh , I'd like to be .

Speaker 2

I think I explained that wrong . I'll just have to cut out the second bit .

Speaker 1

I would like to be okay at many things , versus very good at just one thing , because if you're okay at many things , you can always improve and you're also able to help in many different areas . Versus if you're just good at one thing , then what else do we need you for ?

Speaker 2

But you could base your whole career off that one thing .

Speaker 1

Why does that have to be about a career ?

Speaker 2

Is that a ?

Speaker 1

was it a career question ?

Speaker 2

I don't know . Oh , it's anything . Question .

Speaker 1

Yeah , so in life I'd rather know a lot about , I'd rather know a little about a lot of things . Like imagine going to a party and you meet one guy and he was like all I know to talk about is milk and I'm just going to keep talking to you about milk all party long . That guy would be such a bore . But if you met the girl that could talk to you about milk , juice , tea , coffee , water , chocolate , hot chocolate , matcha , bubble tea man , you could go around in circles and have such a great conversation .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I guess so that's my question , or that's my answer .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I don't know if I could answer that question . It's too difficult Okay .

Speaker 1

Well , this is a very good question . No , that means it's hard what do you do when you can't sleep at night ?

Speaker 2

What do I do when I can't sleep at night ? Do when you can't sleep at night . What do I do when I can't sleep at night ? Yeah , I watch television . That's not that difficult for me to answer , and you know that's what I do . I go back onto disney plus , tune into a new , tune into a old episode of a show I've already watched a hundred times . Um , sleep within minutes . Very good , either that or , uh , I get bored of that and I play 2k okay , that's not what you're supposed to do at night , but okay , okay and for the final question of a of the day describe what your perfect day would be from the .

Speaker 2

Moment you wake up till bedtime and like what would the times be like Would ?

Speaker 1

you wake up at one .

Speaker 2

Would you wake up at five ?

Speaker 1

That's a great question . My perfect day would start with me going to the 7 am yoga class in the nice weather and then coming home and having a perfect cup of coffee and a little bit of breakfast and then a lot of kind of little tasks , like I like doing little tasks like baking or tidying my closet . It's so fun to play with my clothes it's like a little Barbie clothes thing . Maybe a little bit of a nap . I love having a nap in a perfect day and then end it with a very nice dinner and early to bed . Wow , I sound like an old lady , so you're not going to throw any work in there no , that's not a perfect thing .

Speaker 1

I thought you loved work . I do love work , it's true , I could throw some work in there , I'm not saying you should no , it's fun to have like throw in like a demo or a presentation . That goes really well .

Speaker 2

I would really like that .

Speaker 1

That would be great ok sounds cool .

Speaker 2

So that's all for this episode . Uh , tune in to the next one whenever it drops well , we'll do a better job of keeping our schedule , yeah we're gonna be a little bit busy . Um , mama's got a bit of travel this week so we've got a bit of travel next week , and then we've got a bit of travel next week , and then we've got a bit of travel .

Speaker 1

next week . We're going away for Mother's Day .

Speaker 2

So maybe , maybe we bring the stuff and we interview somebody , uh over in Winnipeg I think that's a great idea .

Speaker 1

Maybe we can do a special Mother's Day episode while we're away .

Speaker 2

Yeah , sounds fun .
