A sunny family hike transforms into an unimaginable nightmare when Andrew McGann, a teacher with a troubling past, randomly attacks Clinton and Cristen Brink at Devil's Den State Park in Arkansas. As we peel back the layers of this shocking July 2024 crime, we uncover the heroic final acts of a mother who saved her daughters before returning to help her husband—a decision that tragically cost her life.

What drives someone to murder complete strangers? We trace McGann's suspicious pattern of short teaching stints across multiple states, allegations of inappropriate behavior toward female students, and the red flags that somehow didn't prevent him from continuing to work with children. Former students and parents reveal disturbing details, including McGann allegedly telling a young girl that "if she were older, he would marry her."

The Brinks had only recently moved to Arkansas from South Dakota, their water connected just two weeks before the murders. Their daughters, ages 7 and 9, now face life without parents because of a seemingly random encounter on a hiking trail. We explore how McGann's attempt to evade capture—including taping over his license plate—ultimately failed when he was arrested mid-haircut at a local salon.

This case raises profound questions about violence in public spaces, inadequate systems for tracking concerning behavior among educators, and whether this represents McGann's first violent crime or simply the first time he was caught. As prosecutors seek the death penalty, we wonder what other secrets might emerge from his past.

Devil's Den Family Tragedy

Speaker 1

A family hike in the devil's den comes to a tragic end. This is Hold my Sweet Tea. Raise your hand if you miss me. I'm Pearl.

Speaker 2

And I'm Holly and I know you missed me. I'm Pearl and I'm Holly, and I know you missed me. We're back, guess?

Speaker 1

who's?

Speaker 2

back, back again, crazy Back. Tell your friends For real, share us. Yeah, we were gone for a week. I hope everybody missed us because we missed us yeah, we did, we totally did.

Speaker 1

I was like, I feel like um having withdrawals right.

Speaker 2

But you know, sometimes, sometimes you work a job that gets the better of you and you, you literally have no time to research a case, I'm pretty sure our job is becoming our true crime story. Yes, One of these days you're going to see us on some documentary, yeah, and yeah it's going to be about this job. It's going to be us or them, right? And I would just like to say, if you were sending your child back to school, I really hope that you don't wait until two days before to go get their.

Speaker 1

All of their uniforms, uniforms, or to decide that today's the day to try this on, yeah, and find out. It doesn't fit, yes.

Speaker 2

And also Louisiana. Southern Louisiana is very steeped in Catholic schools and private schools, so there's a lot of them down here. So you know we're giving away a little bit about what we do. We're giving away a little bit about what we do, but don't wait till the last minute to get your kids Catholic school uniforms because, good God, it's stressful.

Speaker 1

Yeah, especially for me. Yes, and the millions of people running in and out going they need to do a better job. Yeah, and they have no idea.

Speaker 2

Yeah, trade me we, we literally cater to all. Of you know, and we, we. I can't say I love my job, but I. I mean it's not bad most of the year, just during summer it's bad. So so be prepared to send your kid back to school. Get all their stuff early.

Speaker 1

Yeah, don't stress people out, yeah don't and be nice and be yeah, and if you're late, be nice about it. Don't be mean, don't be a heifer, especially considering we have a lot of college kids. Yeah, that work for that work for us during the summer, like sometimes I want to stop people and go wait. Would you want someone to talk to your daughter like that?

Speaker 2

we have high school kids that are still under age, like check it Tammy yeah, exactly, don't come in here and talk like that. Okay, that's our rant for the day. Yep, rant over. If you need to rant about your job, email us and rant. Yeah, we'll listen. Yep, absolutely, we'll converse with you and we'll sympathize and be like bitch. You're doing a good job.

Speaker 1

That's right, because that's what we got to say to each other all day.

Speaker 2

All day, every day. So what you got for?

Back After a Break

Speaker 1

us today. So we are going to talk about something very current like super, super duper current. Okay, we are going to talk about Andrew James McGann, government name. Uh-huh, every time you get arrested. No, I'm just kidding.

Speaker 2

All right. Every time you hear that government name you know it's going to be bad. You know you're in trouble. I mean your parents do it to you.

Speaker 1

All right. Every time you hear that government name, you know it's going to be bad, you know you're in trouble. I mean your parents do it to you Right.

Speaker 2

Exactly, they call you by your full name, and then you're like oh, I'm in trouble, so yep, yep, yep.

Speaker 1

So you know when your middle name gets included. That's your way.

Speaker 2

Yep.

Speaker 1

And not name. So andrew mcgann is a teacher that is accused of killing a couple who were hiking with two of their daughters at devil's den state park in arkansas. What, yeah, a teacher, yeah, a teacher.

Speaker 2

What is his motivation?

Speaker 1

No one knows, because they're complete strangers. Wow, there's nothing that shows that he knew these people before happening upon them on the trail.

Speaker 2

So he just didn't want to go back to school, so he picked somebody else to kill.

Speaker 1

I mean, that's horrible yeah we're going to talk about school. Yeah, we're going to talk about the hike. We'll talk about all of that, because it's all pretty interesting how all this unfolds. He doesn't seem to work in any one place for very long.

Speaker 2

Oh, that's a bad sign.

Speaker 1

Yeah, there's like it's red flag city.

Speaker 2

Oh yeah, when I'm looking through applications to hire people for summer. If you are a job skipper, nope, I will not even go any further. I will pass Bye. Yep, Pass Bye.

Speaker 1

Yep. So Clinton Brink and Kristen Brink. They're in their 40s and on July 26th they take their daughters, who are seven and nine, hiking in the Devil's Den. Sounds like a good time A little bit ominous.

Speaker 2

Yeah, a little ominous, but still sounds like a good time little bit ominous. Yeah, a little ominous, but still sounds like a good time.

Speaker 1

Yeah, sounds like a cool spot, right minding their own business, going along, and all of a sudden this dude comes out of nowhere and attacks clinton the dad oh, so he's gonna take out.

Speaker 2

He's gonna take out the guy first yeah.

Speaker 1

so while he is attacking clinton, kristin takes her two daughters and gets them to safety, like so, pretty much, just make sure they they get away. And I, I understand, but at the same time I don't, like I know you want to go help your husband, but can you? I don't know that I this is going to bring out a piece of me that everybody's probably going to be like whatever. I don't know that I would have went back. She did, yeah. He then stabbed her and killed her also.

Speaker 1

So, now her babies have no parents. I don't know that I would have went back yeah, like go get help, go call 9-1-1. Don't go back to the scene I, and I wouldn't have wanted to like leave my daughters anywhere, thinking like what could have happened right, like because he would have found them yeah like, like what if he finishes with me and then goes back up the trail, finds my kids and kills them, right?

Speaker 1

I don't know, there were so many things when I was reading and listening to the news that I was just like something. I don't know that I would have been able to do. So there's actually audio I from the moment that the police find the parents' bodies on the trail and the girls. I guess when she took them to safety had actually gone to like a nearby visitor center to ask for help. So I guess that she got them in there and they were calling the police.

Speaker 2

Like go run over there and tell them to call the police or something.

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah. They didn't immediately know exactly what had happened and then had to use all the investigative tools in their pockets.

Speaker 2

Right, because I'm sure the girls didn't know a whole lot. They were scared he left.

Speaker 1

DNA, yeah, dna.

Speaker 2

DNA.

Speaker 1

I'm always so stupid, but yeah, so his DNA was left at the scene, but it was basically just a complete random attack, because they find no links between McGann and the brain.

Speaker 2

So he was just having a bad day?

Speaker 1

Yeah, I guess, because they're saying you know, they're still trying to determine a motive and he's not giving them one. Yeah, he was actually found and arrested at a barbershop, Not that far.

Speaker 2

So he's like you know what? I killed somebody. Let me go get my hair. Did I need to get a haircut?

Speaker 1

A haircut.

Speaker 2

Maybe if I get my hair cut, I'll look different. No, sir, yeah, you can't Joe this situation From you.

Speaker 1

Right on, he's like.

Speaker 2

I'm a different person.

Speaker 1

And he hadn't even been in this area that long. Yeah, so that added to the fact that he doesn't know these people. It's not like these were parents of kids that were potentially his students or anything like that. He just moved to Arkansas, right.

Speaker 2

And school. It's been summer, so he probably just got the job. I wonder theory my own thoughts if he has moved around from town to town from jobs and he has been killing people.

Andrew McGann's Shocking Crime

Speaker 1

I don't know, serial killer, that's one thought. Yep, well, he was. I don't know what it exactly means when they say he was tired, he was hired. Yeah, I'm tired, I'm tired, he's hired. Tired, he was hired. Yeah, I'm tired. I'm tired, he's hard, he's hired, I'm tired. As a teacher candidate, what does that?

Speaker 2

even mean so. Maybe he was like did he potential have a job or not? Maybe he was a candidate for the job, but he hasn't landed it yet. Yeah, so, he was in the running for it.

Speaker 1

Maybe because the Springdale Public Schools released a statement saying this individual has not at any time come into contact with Springdale students or the families we serve? Hmm, because he had not. I mean, he hadn't even met his potential Arkansas students. But here's the kicker. The kicker. Mcgann had previously been in trouble for inappropriate contact as early as his first year of teaching.

Speaker 2

Oh yeah, he's killed people before he's done this. Yep, that's my opinion.

Speaker 1

So he graduated from Oklahoma State University. He's got a degree in elementary education, ew, and he just graduated in May of 2022. So he moves to northwestern Texas and is hired to teach the fourth grade at Donald Elementary in Flower Mound. He's supposed to teach math to fourth graders supposed to teach?

Speaker 1

math to fourth graders. The craziest thing is he's placed on administrative leave in the spring of 2023. And and they say that the reason is for issues or concerns with his classroom management, his professional judgment and I guess there were some allegations of student favoritism.

Speaker 2

Hmm, grooming, you mean. Right, yeah, hmm, grooming, you mean.

Speaker 1

Right, yeah. Now they do say an internal investigation found no evidence of any inappropriate behavior with students, but he still resigned, yeah, of one of his former students at Donald Elementary and she literally told reporters that he's the most standoffish teacher she's ever met. But apparently he's only standoffish with parents, right, but the kids, from what it seems.

Speaker 2

Grooming he's. Yeah, all about the kids, Right.

Speaker 1

She's quoted as saying he's pretty cold. You could ask him a question and he would give you a one word response. Overall, he just seemed pretty disinterested. Now her son told his mother that he noticed some behavior from McGann towards the girls in the class. Of course, another one of them stating that they heard Mr McGann tell a girl, a little girl, that if she were older he would marry her. Ew, ew, ew, ew, right, of course, there's no comment from the school district on that because, like we previously said, there was an internal investigation that didn't find any evidence. Blah, blah, blah. So, after leaving Texas, he goes back to Oklahoma. He works as a science and social studies teacher for fifth graders at Broken Arrow Public Schools. So this would be during the 2023 to 2024 school year public schools. So this would be during the 2023 to 2024 school year.

Speaker 1

Now Broken Arrow Public Schools makes their statement because he's also worked for them, saying that, as with all employees hired by the district, he was subjected to and passed the legally required background checks prior to being hired. They also said that McGann had told them that the reason he left the position with them was to work out of state. But instead of leaving the state, he actually took another job nearby in the Tulsa area. So he's left again. Yeah, so he stayed in Oklahoma this time, but he just went to a different school. So this other school was Sand Springs Public Schools and he was there from the summer of 2024 until May of this year. So till school ended. Till school, yeah, again, passed all background checks for the job Same old stuff. And then he resigns from them at the end of the year, saying he's taking a job out of state.

Speaker 1

And this is when he ends up in Arkansas, where he didn't start his new job Like he's only been a teacher since 2022, and now, this would be his fourth school that he's at in that short time, and two of which he's resigned from without any issue, and then one where there were claims of issues that weren't apparently substantiated right but no issues that they were reported, so there could have been. Yeah.

Speaker 2

Possibly, you know. Just kids were too scared to say anything.

McGann's Troubling Teaching History

Speaker 1

So, like I told you, he was arrested at the barbershop at well, it's a beauty salon I'm sorry, lupita's beauty salon and well it isn't and barbershop. So I guess it's both yeah, it caters to everyone and barbershop. So I guess it's both. Yeah, it caters to everyone. It's literally like 30 minutes from where he allegedly slaughtered this family. Well, the parents of these girls. Surveillance footage from the salon showed the cops actually taking his barber cape off before putting him handcuffed. So he was like mid haircut good, I hope it looked janky I just thought that was funny.

Speaker 1

He does look pretty janky. Um, let's see, I'm going to show you a picture while we're talking, okay, see how this is how janky he looks oh, oh.

Speaker 2

Why does he look like that puppet buster? Uh, what's it called? Remember the puppet?

Speaker 1

um, I can't think what it's called now he looks like a wreck-it ralph, but blonde does kind of look like Wreck-It Ralph, I'm gonna wreck it. So yeah, wreck-it Ralph right there.

Speaker 2

He looks mad.

Speaker 1

Yeah.

Speaker 2

Well, now that they have his DNA, hopefully they run it through CODIS and if there's anything else that has happened with his DNA that they couldn't find because he wasn't in the system, see if anything else unfolds.

Speaker 1

So mcgann is being charged with two counts of capital murder in, like I said, what they believe is a random attack. Now, of course, the prosecutor, brandon carter, is telling reporters that he intends to pursue the death penalty against McGann, and he's obviously being held without bond currently.

Speaker 2

Good as he should. That's definitely something He'll never make it to the death penalty. I'm telling you right now.

Speaker 1

Now authorities are saying that McGann confessed while in custody, but he did not enter a plea at his hearing. He's due back in court on August 25th.

Speaker 2

Okay.

Speaker 1

And the Devil's Den has been closed to the public since the murders, as it should be.

Speaker 2

What part of Arkansas is it in? Because I know they have a lot of like mines and things there. They've got diamond like the what is it Crater of Diamonds or Diamond of Crater or something park where you can go dig for diamonds, real diamonds, and I know they have a lot of places like that up there. So I wonder if it was like like a cave or just a hiking trail. I'm just wondering if it's drivable. I'm like.

Speaker 1

The Devil's Den is a 2,500-acre state park near West Fork, about 140 miles northwest of Little Rock, the state capital. It took five days for them to find him and they searched like all over the place obviously when they first went there the whole area of the devil's den, and they kept getting tip after tip after tip which eventually led to him.

Speaker 2

Well, from his mugshot he's not blendable. No, he stands out very, very much with his curly hair and everything Like. That's very predominant and that's probably why he was getting a haircut to get it cut off. I bet the person who was cutting his hair like freaked out was like I just had a murderer in my chair yeah cutting his hair having a conversation probably.

Speaker 1

Yeah, yeah, like, how do you deal with that situation? Right cops come busting up in your business and they're like excuse me, sir, I need to step away with those scissors.

Speaker 2

You got scissors up and a comb in the other. Like it wasn't me, bro Right.

Speaker 1

Snip, snip, like no, no, no, it's the guy in your chair. We won't Right right, wow, yeah, that would have been crazy. But they said he was very cooperative during the arrest and admitted to killing the couple soon after, and I guess that's when they took his dna and matched it to blood that was found at the crime scene. Yeah, they were literally only a half a mile into the park before he attacked them well, that's how the girls got to the visitor center so fast then yeah, but again I would not have come back.

Speaker 2

no, he didn't even try to go deep into the woods to try to find somebody. He was just like oh, there's a person, step, step.

The Arrest and Investigation

Speaker 1

Yeah, it's just like they just happened upon him so quickly and then he was like oh.

Speaker 2

No, his wife came back, step, step, step Right, wreck it Ralph.

Speaker 1

Apparently another hiker on the trail had also reported the killing. So the state police was able to collect photos and videos from other hikers who didn't necessarily witness the attack but were on the trails at or around the same time, and they were able to narrow down the suspects Right and the suspect's vehicle which, by the way, and the suspect's vehicle which, by the way. Here we have another criminal who tries to hide some stuff in a janky way. He put tape over his license plate.

Speaker 2

What yeah, this is not Scooby-Doo, like type stuff. Yeah, you can't put tape over your license plate and think you're going to get away with something.

Speaker 1

That's just dumb, right, so it's it's kind of funny that he went to such great length, yeah, to conceal his identity. But he was also like super sloppy about it.

Speaker 2

Yeah, like it was, you know, premeditated. He went there with a weapon, he was gonna kill somebody and then he hurried up and was like, oh, this is the first person I see. Why would you attack a family and not just like one person?

Speaker 1

yeah you know, the other crazy thing is the brinks themselves had just recently moved to arkansas well. They had moved from South Dakota and were living in a small city called Prairie Grove in northwest Arkansas.

Speaker 2

Those poor girls.

Speaker 1

They literally the funniest thing that I felt like was mentioned was that their water at their home had just been connected two weeks before they were killed, so they were fresh.

Speaker 2

They were like let's go find a really cool place out here. This looks good, the Devil's Den, let's go check it out. It was probably like one of their first outings as a family in Arkansas. Yeah, and then that happened, yeah, and now these girls are scar their first outings as a family in.

Speaker 1

Arkansas yeah.

Speaker 2

And then that happens. Yeah, and now, these girls are scarred for life and they've lost their parents.

Speaker 1

Yeah, and they're not even really sure how much they witnessed of that attack. Um, but their dad was actually supposed to start working as a milk delivery driver on Monday, the Monday after his attack, and Kristen had been a licensed nurse in Montana and South Dakota before they moved to Arkansas.

Speaker 1

The Brink family is super proud of them for protecting their daughters. Yes, which me too, like I know. That's gotta be like one of those things. In that moment everything's crazy, yeah, but at least any any man of mine should know I'm not coming back for you no, no I will go call 9-1-1.

Speaker 2

We have kids, I'm not coming back.

Speaker 1

My children yes, I'm not coming back. I'm going to protect my children.

Speaker 2

Yes, I'm not coming back for you. Yep, mama Bear will protect the kids, for sure.

Speaker 1

Its trails have been closed to the public since Saturday, like I said, but officials on Thursday said they assured the public there is not a pattern of violence at state parks. But we in this true crime land, yes, know about delia d'ambra's park. Predators on audio chuck yep, and there's a lot.

The Brink Family's Story

Speaker 2

There's a lot, yeah, a lot happens at state parks and national parks already in a place.

Speaker 1

that's advantageous for this kind of activity, because you don't have to dump them nowhere. We're already in the woods, right.

Speaker 2

Ain't no taking them nowhere. There's a good spot right there. Stab, stab, you're dead. Bye.

Speaker 1

Yeah, it's very sad, but I'm glad other hikers caught him on camera.

Speaker 2

For sure.

Speaker 1

And all that fun stuff.

Speaker 2

Yeah, he was dumb about it. But also I'm glad he was dumb because Wreck-It Ralph got wrecked.

Speaker 1

Yes, he did, yep, he got wrecked, he got caught and he's apparently admitting it, which I think is funny that they keep saying allegedly, not allegedly. I guess that's just for safety's sake on the reporter side of the world. But I was like he said he did it. But again, people recant, yeah, every day always.

Speaker 2

That's why I said my opinion.

Speaker 1

I think he's done this before I'm like, even if he didn't kill anybody, I kind of feel like he's participated in pedophilia and this has been brewing under the surface and he finally released it. And then every time he does something, he hurries up and leaves, because he doesn't want to get caught. Till now he didn't leave. He went and got his hair cut and got picked up, picked up Mid haircut.

Speaker 2

He kind of had that Justin Timberlake hair from like the NSYNC days. It's gonna be May.

Speaker 1

I was over here going what goes around comes around.

Speaker 2

And I picked it's gonna be May, it's not gonna be May. May is gone. Summer's almost over. Yay, that means it's fall, y'all. It's Augtober, october.

Speaker 1

Yes, augtober, so you can put your Halloween decorations out right now. Decorations.

Speaker 2

Oh my God, I have been looking at all kinds of Halloween decorations already and I have a butt ton and I don't really don't need any more, but I am always down for a good spooky mug to add to my collection.

Speaker 1

Yeah, I was going to say like, how many mugs do you have now? I have a lot.

Speaker 2

Eleventy billion. Eleventy billion. No sex, because I am a loner mug collector one and done.

Speaker 1

Single ladies, I mean all single muggies I have some good ones.

Speaker 2

I have lots of spooky mugs, but that's I just.

Speaker 2

I love them, I love them, I find like a really cool one and I'm like have to have that one for me. I'm on the hunt for Joanna Parker mugs right now because I love the vintage Halloween vibe. Yeah, black and orange, vintage Halloween that's. That's my jam. I'm so excited for all the Halloween stuff and we're going to do like a really cool Halloween episode. Maybe, yeah, we are, I'm going to do some history or something. We're gonna do some witchy stuff and maybe, uh, the history of sawane and we still need to go do our little trippy trip?

Speaker 2

yes, absolutely after we go to the head spa yes, we're gonna go to the head spa soon and get our hair washed and like a whole experience facial and massage.

Speaker 1

Can't wait.

Speaker 2

I need it. We have lots of little things planned and we're going to. You know.

Speaker 1

I say thank you to my mom and my sister for sending me the moolah to go to the head spa for my birthday. Even though. I couldn't do it on my birthday. We're going to go anyway.

Speaker 2

You need to go to the head spa and get a tattoo.

Speaker 1

But not at the head spa.

Speaker 2

Because they don't do tattoos at the head spa, but I'm going to go get a tattoo. I need another one for my collection.

Halloween Plans and Future Episodes

Speaker 1

I'm making a little girl's day. Yes, maybe we could see. Maybe we could see if Patty Salzetta is playing somewhere later that same day. Maybe we could go see Pate and we could be like thanks for doing our theme music. Yes, so make sure you like and share and follow us everywhere. Yeah, all over the place. Send a link to your friends of our episode yes, I did not need to sing that.

Speaker 2

That was stupid we're running on pure I don't know what, but it's something pure bleh, pure bleh. We got. We got about a week, two weeks to go on this uh roller coaster and then it'll slow down yeah, so we'll get better, we promise yes, and we'll have lots of cool content for you, but if you have any ideas, please send them in and let us know what you want us to cover, especially for, like, the spooky season coming up, because that's our jam, yeah.

Speaker 1

I mean, we're still looking at the stuff that Andrea Mm. Hmm, shout out to you again. Yeah, sent us, but we're always looking for extra stuff like we have. We have tons of little things in the works. We just don't want to put them out until we know more. And then, obviously, this thing I just did as it gets updated. We have tons of little things in the works. We just don't want to put them out until we know more, right? And then, obviously, this thing I just did as it gets updated. I'll wait a little while.

Speaker 2

But I'll make sure we revisit yeah, revisit and highlight that so we know what's going on with this guy, and I'm still suspicious that he's done other things.

Speaker 1

Yeah, samesies, inquiring's done other things. Yeah, samesies, I want to know.

Speaker 2

Inquiring minds want to know.

Speaker 1

Yeah, I don't think it's crazy that some I mean children notice things.

Speaker 2

Oh, absolutely. Just like the little boy who noticed he favored girls.

Speaker 1

Like kids know they pick up on those things, Hearing him say if you were older, I'd marry you.

Speaker 2

Right, that's so gross.

Speaker 1

Ew Gross.

Speaker 2

But so anyway, share us, do all those things.

Speaker 1

Email us at steeped at holdmysweetteacom.

Speaker 2

Yes, give us some ideas and Hold my Sweet Tea, as always, is a drunken bee production.
