Following Betteridge’s Law of Headlines, the answer to the question posed in the headline is, “no.” Actually — because we’re talking about taxes here — we can say the answer is never so definitive, so let’s change it to “probably not.”

Alternative minimum tax (AMT) is a type of parallel tax system. It requires certain items to be added back in determining alternative minimum taxable income (AMTI).

And in some cases, a taxpayer may get an additional deduction for AMT purposes that they didn’t get for regular tax purposes.

All of this to arrive at AMTI. A special tax rate is applied to AMTI, and if the amount of AMT is larger than the taxpayer’s regular tax liability, then they’ll be liable for their AMT amount. Listen in as we dive into some details on this fascinating topic!
