Jennifer Mackey-Mary: Hey Hey! It’s that time again! Time to learn what all the cool girls will be wearing this season. If you want to update your Spring wardrobe to look current, but still age and lifestyle-appropriate, I’m here to help. Let’s get started!

Hello gorgeous, welcome back to the Everyday Style School, the podcast that gives real-life style advice to real-life women.

I’m your host, Jennifer Mackey-Mary, I’m a wardrobe stylist who’s been dressing everyday women for over 25 years, and the founder of Everyday Style, where we’re on a mission to inspire women to love the way they look, and give you the tools to make getting dressed easy.

Here we are again, another new season, more new trends. Spring is one of the big ones when it comes to trends and there is so much out there that I couldn’t narrow it down to just 10, so technically this is 11 wearable trends for Spring 2025, and even then there’s so much I don’t have time to cover.

If you’re a Style Circle member, I’m sharing 5 more trends with you in the Extra Credit podcast. That’s our member exclusive show, and this season I’m sharing 5 specific on trend items I’m adding to my wardrobe this season. That episode is out right now, so go check it out.

But in this episode, I’m sharing 10 trends from the runways that can apply to your everyday life. As always, I try to choose the most wearable trends, and I try to cover things I haven’t talked about recently. The truth is, a lot of the trends I shared last spring are still going strong. If you’d like, you can go back and check out that episode, which I’ll link in the shownotes: youreverydaystyle.com/spring-trends-2024

Also in the shownotes on our website,  we’ve got links and examples for all the trends we’re talking about today, so head over there to check them out and maybe do a little wardrobe updating, since we’ve done the hard work of shopping for you!

Also, if you want to see how to work the trends into your existing wardrobe, the Spring Capsule Wardrobe Guide is coming out March 13 and just like every season we show really practical ways to update your wardrobe a little at a time so it’s always looking fresh and current, without having to do a major overhaul each season or even every year. We combine current trends and wardrobe basics you probably already have to create over 200 outfits that will get you dressed each morning quicker than you can say “what am I going to wear today?”

It’s absolutely the best way to build a cohesive mix and match wardrobe that saves you time and money without sacrificing style

Alright let’s talk spring 2025 trends.

Just a reminder, this is not a recap of ALL the trends out there–I like to talk about the ones that I think are wearable for most women in our regular, everyday lives.

Will all of the trends work for you? NO! Will you like all of them? Probably not! Take what works for you, and leave the rest.

But, as you’ve probably heard me say before, don’t shut your mind to new things. Sometimes your eyes just need time to adjust to a new silhouette.

So, never say never Say, not yet. Or how could I do this in a way WOULD work for me? That’s how you stay current, and avoid a style time warp.

With all that said, here are 10 trends from then Spring 2025 runways that regular, everyday women can work into their regular, everyday wardrobes.

Trend #1 Let’s talk about some of the colors of the season.

In general, there are a lot of color trends out there right now. Brown is only getting bigger, so if you haven’t hopped on that train yet, what are you waiting for? but then there are sort of 2 big color stories. The first is brights-there’s a lot of poppy red, coral, bright blue, bright green…

But then there are the pastels, and that’s what I want to talk about. Specifically powder pink, butter yellow, and pistachio green. Now, maybe you’re thinking, Jen–pastels for spring? How original. But I don’t know, somehow this season, pastels do feel fresh and new. I think it’s partly that we’re seeing these soft colors in more elevated silhouettes since the trend continues to be somewhat polished and refined.

That doesn’t mean you have to wear a full on pistachio suit though. There are plenty of wearable, casual pieces in these colors–from sweatsets and tshirts to blouses and dresses, and even accessories.

You know I love color trends because they’re an easy way to make your wardrobe look more current, and colors don’t look dated the way some other trends will in a few years. It’s just a pink top, right? So I love that.

BUT–a butter yellow sweater on its own, styled like you normally would, doesn’t have enough oomph to make your outfit look on-trend. To accomplish that, you can do one of two things; First, make a statement with the color–either going head to toe–like that pistachio suit or a powder pink sweatsuit, or wearing an unexpected piece. Butter yellow trousers with a neutral top makes more of a statement than a butter yellow top with neutral bottoms. A light pink outerwear piece pops more than a light pink tee. So that’s one way to make the color look like a trend. The other way is to style the piece in a modern, on trend way. So instead of just putting a pastel sweater with your basic mid wash, straight leg jeans and plain round toe flats, wear your sweater with a pair of barrel leg jeans and mesh flats for example. The on-trend styling gives the color a boost and makes it look noticeably current.

For Trend #2 Let's talk about patterns for spring.
Trends that are still going strong include animal print and polka dots, and we’re not talking about them because we already have. Obviously, for spring it is always stripes and floral. Stripes are definitely here, I wouldn’t call them a spring trend, they’re more a spring staple. Florals are out there too, but there isn’t one major floral type that’s dominating–instead, there’s a smattering of small dainty florals, some big bold florals–and everything in between. They kind of feel like a good option, but not a trend.

What is feeling like a trend is checks, plaids, and gingham. Now, gingham is always kind of a spring/summer staple right? It's always around when the weather warms up, but checks and plaids feel more like fall and winter patterns, so they do feel a little fresher, and discussion worthy.

For checks and plaids to feel like a spring trend, they need to be in springier colors and silhouettes. So leave your dark flannel button up hanging in the closet and look for short sleeve blouses, light-colored plaids, springy dresses, and lightweight fabrics. Avoid any plaid that has a dark base color like black, brown, burgundy. Even if they have light colors mixed in, it's the base color that will make it read really wintery.
When it comes to gingham, I’m sure lots of you have the classic j crew factory gingham button front shirt–we’ve put it in Capsules galore over the years, I know you know the one. I’m not saying it looks dated, because it’s a classic piece, but I think it's kind of like the color trends. If you want it to read as a trend, try gingham in a more unexpected piece. I saw gingham ribbon shoe laces that looked really fresh and new, so don’t stop wearing your gingham shirt this season, but if you want to look on trend, try a slightly triendier or unexpected piece.

Trend #3 –let’s talk denim for Spring 2025

Lots of trends in the denim space, but I want to highlight a few. First, the barrel leg is still going strong, and I know I said I wasn’t going to cover trends I’ve already talked about, but I wanted to mention it because recently, we’ve had quite a few Style Circle members try barrel leg jeans for the first time–and these are women all over the age and body shape spectrum, and they’re loving them. They’ve all said they were afraid of them, but they just tried, and now they’re hooked. I wanted to mention this because it’s an example of waiting to try a trend for a long time–almost to the point of not being a trend anymore. Now, after a trend is over, it either moves to being a staple, mainstream piece–like skinny jeans, or it kind of falls off the radar, and people don’t wear them any more. I don’t know which direction barrel legs will go. But what I wanted to point out is that I often hear that women don’t want to add trends to their wardrobe because they’re popular one minute, and gone the next. But I’ve been talking about barrel leg jeans for a couple of years now. So this idea that trends move super quickly just isn’t true. It's more about where you jump into a trend. If you want to get more longevity out of your trendy pieces, try them earlier in their life cycle. Barrel legs are showing no sign of going away, so just try. Put them on your body.

Speaking of skinny jeans, if you’ve refused to give up your skinnies and you’re hanging on like your life depends on it, I’ve got something you might like. Skinny jeans are back. But let me clarify. These are not actual skinny jeans. They are skinniER jeans. We’re not going back to the high stretch, tight from waist to ankle styles of the 20 teens. What is modern and on trend right now is a slim straight jean, or even a cigarette jean.

Another denim trend for Spring 2025 is jeans with front seams. If you’re someone who wishes her legs were longer, these are fabulous. That long vertical line will help elongate your legs, and I think they just look fresh and fun. Beyond basic denim like this is still having a moment, and I want to encourage you, if you are a woman who lives in jeans, and I know a lot of you do, to add some interest and fun to your wardrobe with beyond basic styles. It's just as easy as throwing on your classic, plain pair of jeans, but you’re going to look modern and updated. You might not wear them forever, but it is a really easy way to update your wardrobe while staying true to your style.

The next two trends I want to talk about are sort of overarching aesthetics, rather than specific pieces. Like coastal grandmother, or mob wives, which are a couple we’ve seen in recent years. I Like these aesthetic trends because it’s about putting a whole look together, which is the key to looking current and on-trend.

The first, trend # 4 is Fisherman Core
This is obviously maritime inspired, but it’s different from the nautical aesthetic we’re used to seeing in the spring. The biggest difference between the two is that nautical leans toward preppy–crisp shirts, navy, lots of stripes, and fisherman core is a little more rugged and a little more casual.

This aesthetic is marked by breton stripes, relaxed denim and khakis, fisherman sandals and boat shoes, fisherman sweaters, beanies, and of course the raincoat. This is not a classic, elevated trench coat. This is a raincoat with a hood, maybe in bright yellow, or navy.

The main colors of this aesthetic are olive, navy, tan, ivory, putty, and brown–very practical and earthy..with pops of yellow, and maybe some red.

On the runways, designers were showing a lot of themed accessories to go with this one–like fish earrings, fishing net type handbags. I think that’s getting into costume territory, but you do you.

I don’t have a lot to say about this trend. I think it is super cute, and very practical for spring, especially for those of us who are still wearing sweaters and jackets through most of the season. This comes down to do you like it or not? When I was researching this episode, one article was titled, do you want to dress like a sexy fisherman? And I guess that’s what it comes down to. If you do, have at it.

Trend #5 is the other trending aesthetic, which I’m calling Ruffles and Romance. There are a lot of ladylike looks out there for Spring 2025, and this is part of that, but instead of being a pretty refined lady jacket for example, this trend leans a little softer, a little more traditionally feminine and romantic.

Ruffles are a HUGE trend for Spring 2025. On sweaters, blouses, dresses, t-shirts, you name it. A lot of women are leery about ruffles, thinking they’ll add bulk, and they absolutely can, BUT, not all ruffles are created equal–the size, volume, fabric, placement and direction all make a big difference. One thing I’m seeing, and loving, is blouses with vertical ruffles that can do great things for a body. They remind me of my all time favorite blouse, which I had whenI worked for chicos, like 2001, 2002–a lifetime ago. It was a v-neck blouse that had a ruffle that went around the neckline and then down the center of my body, covering the button placket. It always makes me feel like a million bucks, and I’m excited to find an updated, modern version. Point being, don’t count ruffles out. I guarantee there are some that will work for you.

The other fabrics in the ruffles and romance aesthetic that are big this season are chiffon, lace, and eyelet. I’m especially loving some of the lace options I’m seeing out there right now, because they’re not as sweet and romantic..there are lots of pieces out there that look more modern, refined and even a little edgy, which is great if your style isn’t super soft and romantic.

Something I talked about in my episode on My Style Struggles, and then we had a long discussion about in the Style Circle member coaching is the need to have a couple of pieces in your wardrobe that aren’t just practical. I shared that I struggle sometimes because my whole wardrobe feels workish. Because I can wear almost my entire wardrobe to work, out to dinner, running errands. I use a lot of my wardrobe, and that’s great. BUT when I want to feel special or out of the ordinary, I don’t have anything. In the member coaching we talked about being intentional about putting some of those special, not-for-everyday pieces into your wardrobe, and I think this is a good trend for that. I might not wear a ruffled blouse or lace top regularly, but when I do want to feel a little special, they’ll be nice to have.

Which is why I included this next trend as a bit of a bonus, so we’ll call it trend 5.5 and that is lingerie details.

I know I said this episode is 10 wearable trends, and I promise I’m not crazy. Hear me out. I’m not talking about wearing a slip dress, or going without pants. This is about things like corset and bustier details, lace trims, that kind of thing. This is trend 5.5 because it does cross over into the romantic aesthetic with things like lace and sheer fabrics, but there are a couple of specific details I wanted to highlight.

I feel like this trend can be used in a couple of different ways. First, you can really embrace it as part of the not-for-everyday thing I just talked about. Like a lace bodysuit or a corset top under a blazer for a night out. Sort of like Jeff Bezos wife at the inauguration. Great outfit, not sure it was the right venue, but whatever. Now, I don’t think a lot of our listeners are going to go for this one, and that’s ok…there’s a much more wearable way to do this trend.

And that is corset and bustier details on everyday pieces. I’m seeing lots of tops, tees, blouses and dresses with these shape defining details, and I wanted to talk about this one because I feel like it's a great hack for women who often feel boxy in their clothes, or who want to emphasize or enhance curves in the midsection. I’m going to post examples and links in the shownotes. Just trust me, and try it.

Moving on Trend #6 which is outerwear for Spring 2025. The big trend in this one is sporty jackets like anoraks and windbreakers. Now, I want to be very clear that if you pull out your gray Columbia windbreaker from 2012, this is not that. The trending pieces this season have an updated silhouette–lots of cropped, boxy, and popover styles out there–or they have an interesting colorway, like a retro track jacket.

On the runways, these were shown in a very non-traditional way. I don’t know if you know the wrong shoe theory, but basically it says, to make your outfit look more high fashion, wear the wrong shoe. So if I’m in leggings and a sweatshirt, to make it look more high fashion, I should wear heels. If I’m in a floaty chiffon dress, I should wear sneakers or doc martens. That’s the wrong shoe theory. On the runway, it was all about the wrong jacket theory. So it was a popover windbreaker over black trousers and a dress shirt, or a colorblocked jacket over a feminine dress. If you live in a very fashionable place, and you are by nature a very fashionable person, have at it. Wear the wrong jacket all day long. But most everyday women will look a little off doing this. Give it a try, experiment, but to make this work, you kind of have to have elements that are drastically different. A jersey wrap around work dress and a windbreaker isn’t different enough for this to work. A ruffled chiffon maxi actually works better. The work dress just looks like you don’t have a dressy jacket. The chiffon maxi looks more intentional. Proceed with caution on the wrong jacket thing.

The last 4 trends are accessories, which are always an easy way to inject a little trendiness into your wardrobe.

Trend #7 is shoes–I’m excited about this one because wedges are back! Wedges are so wearable, and they’re fabulous for spring and summer, so I’m here for it.

On the runways, it was all about sculptural wedges. The actual heel had an interesting shape to it–and we’re starting to see more of those hit stores. From the time I started researching trends, to the time I’m recording this episode, there are so many more options, which I think will increase as the weather gets warmer.

Again, if you want to look trendy with this one, you have to make sure the whole shoe looks current. I’m not saying the heel has to be funky and different, but does the toe shape look current for example. The best way to know is to head to the website of a store that embodies the style you want. Then, look at the shoes they’re selling. This works better on sites like anthropologie or talbots than a site like DSW or Nordstrom. If you’re going that route, look at brands you admire.

Trend #8 is a jewelry trend, and that is stacked bangles. We’ve been seeing bracelet stacks again for a while, and this is just a little switch from the stretchy or chain style bracelets to a more polished, sculptured look.

For me, bangle bracelets get in the way when I’m working on the computer, and I tent to take them off and leave little piles of jewelry, but a good fix for this is to wear cuff bracelets that give you the same shape, but aren’t as obtrusive when you’re working…and lots of brands are making rectangular bracelets which are a little more wearable.

Another good idea is to update your watch band to a bangle style, so you’ve got the trend built in every day.

Mixing metals is also a big trend for spring 2025, so stack your bangles in both silver and gold.

Trend #9 is belts. We’ve been talking about belts for quite some time, but this season it's all about the statement belt. Now, this could be a wide, waist defining belt or a wrap belt, but it can even be as simple as adding a little more flavor to the belts you wear with your jeans and trousers. Just add color, texture, embellishment, or an interesting buckle. BUT leave the GG belt, or the knockoff interlocking circle belt in the closet. That one had its moment. If you want to splurge on a statement belt, check out the Chloe iconic belt. That’s more in line with what we’re talking about

Ok, last one

Trend #10, is handbags, and today I’m talking about one that’s been gaining momentum for a few seasons, but it was all over the runways for Spring 2025, so it's a good time to talk about it, and that is the woven leather bag. I like this trend, because whatever kind of bag you like best, you can find it in woven leather. Doesn’t matter if you like shoulder bags, cross body bags, big bags, little bags–they’re all out there in woven leather which makes this an extremely wearable trend.

Other handbag trends worth mentioning include big bags, top handles, satchel/doctor bags, and belted bags. This is an easy way to do a two-fer trend. You can do a woven leather bag with a top handle, or a woven leather belted bag–so many ways to pack two trends into one item.

There you have it–10 wearable trends for spring 2025. I hope this episode has given you some insight into what’s big this season, and some practical tips for working them into your everyday wardrobe. As always, take what works for you, and leave the rest. The most important thing is that you have fun with style  and feel great in whatever you wear.
