Discover why limiting God to your expectations might cause you to miss what He's actually doing in this challenging episode. Based on Isaiah 55:8-9, we learn that preconceived notions about how God acts put Him in a box. God is bigger than our intellect and brainstorming ability—we must let go of our expectations to truly trust Him. Continuing to untangle from expectations, today we address limiting God to our understanding.

What You'll Learn:

  • Why preconceived notions about God limit what we can receive
  • How the Pharisees missed Jesus by trusting theology over God Himself
  • Why Mary could accept the impossible miracle
  • The difference between trusting God and trusting theology about God
  • What boxes you might be putting God in
  • A practical untangle moment to release limited expectations

The Pharisees' Box: Religious experts knew Scripture inside and out, waited for the Messiah their whole lives. Then Jesus showed up—born in Bethlehem (as prophesied), performed miracles, taught with authority, fulfilled Scripture. But Pharisees rejected Him because He didn't match their expectations. They expected a political leader overthrowing Rome—Jesus came as a humble servant. They expected someone honoring their religious system—Jesus challenged it. They expected affirmation—Jesus confronted them. He didn't fit their box, so instead of adjusting their box, they rejected Him. They trusted their theology about God more than God Himself and missed what they'd been waiting for.

Mary's Openness: An angel told Mary she'd conceive as a virgin—something brand new, unprecedented, impossible. Mary could have rejected it: "That's not how God works. That doesn't fit my understanding." But she said "Let it be to me according to your word" (Luke 1:38). She didn't have full understanding or all answers, but had faith in God—not just theology about God. Because she was open to God working in unexpected ways, she became part of the greatest miracle in history.

Our Boxes: What boxes have you put God in? Maybe you've decided God always works through certain methods: "God would never ask me to do that." "God always provides this way." Maybe you've decided God would never do certain things: "God wouldn't ask me to leave this job." Maybe you've decided what's possible: "God could never use someone like me." But how do you know? God's ways are higher than yours. When you limit God to your understanding, you might miss what He's actually doing.

Trusting God Versus Trusting Theology: There's a critical difference. Theology is important—understanding Scripture is important. But theology is your understanding of God, and your understanding is limited, incomplete, sometimes wrong. God Himself is infinite, unlimited, always right, and free to work outside your categories. The Pharisees trusted their theology. Mary trusted God. That made all the difference.

Your Untangle Moment: Identify one box you've put God in, then practice untangling by acknowledging God is bigger than your categories. Write down one way you've been limiting God: "I expect God to work by [method]" or "God would never [do this]." Draw a literal box around it. Pray: "God, I've been limiting You to my understanding. You are bigger than my boxes. I'm opening myself to Your ways, even when they don't match my expectations." Write or say: "God can work in ways I haven't thought of. I trust Him, not just my theology about Him." When you find yourself saying "God wouldn't do that" or "God always works this way," remind yourself: "God's ways are higher than mine."

Perfect for anyone with rigid theological expectations, missing what God is doing because it doesn't fit categories, or learning to trust God Himself over theology about God.
