Accepting God’s invitation of grace is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a lifelong relationship with Jesus.
In this episode of The Journey, we explore Colossians 2:6–7 and Paul’s instruction: “Just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him.” We receive Jesus by grace through faith—and we continue following Jesus in the same way. The Christian life does not begin with dependence upon God and then require us to complete the journey through our own strength. The grace that invites us also sustains, corrects, strengthens, and transforms us along the way.
If you have accepted God’s invitation, you may be wondering what happens next. What have you actually agreed to? What should following Jesus look like in everyday life?
You have said yes to a relationship with Jesus and to a lifetime of learning how to follow Him. You have not promised that you will immediately understand everything, never struggle again, or always move forward without hesitation. You have simply begun walking with Jesus.
Paul uses two pictures to describe this continuing relationship. Followers of Jesus are to be “rooted” and “built up” in Christ. One picture comes from a growing tree and the other from a building under construction. Both remind us that spiritual formation takes time.
Strong roots usually develop quietly beneath the surface. A stable building is constructed gradually upon a solid foundation. In the same way, becoming more like Jesus normally happens through repeated, faithful practices rather than one dramatic moment.
We spend time with God. We read Scripture to discover His character and recognize His voice. We pray honestly about our joys, fears, temptations, failures, and unanswered questions. We create space to listen. We receive wisdom through mature followers of Jesus, and when we fall, we return to God rather than hiding in shame.
Grace has been working in your life longer than you may realize. It awakened your questions and created your spiritual hunger. It placed people, conversations, experiences, and moments of conviction along your path. Grace led you toward the invitation and made it possible for you to respond.
That same grace will continue walking with you.
Grace forgives when you fail.
Grace corrects when you wander.
Grace strengthens you when the journey becomes difficult.
Grace exposes what needs to change and patiently forms the character of Jesus within you.
Grace reminds you that a wrong turn does not have to become the end of your story.
If you are still unsure whether you are ready to accept God’s invitation, continue seeking. Keep reading Scripture, asking honest questions, and placing yourself where you can encounter the story of Jesus. Your willingness to continue exploring may itself be evidence that God’s seeking grace is already at work in your life.
Colossians 2 says that lives rooted and established in Jesus begin to overflow with thankfulness. Gratitude grows as we recognize how completely we depend upon grace. We become thankful that God loved us before we understood how to love Him, continued inviting us after we ignored Him, and did not allow our failures to exhaust His mercy.
As you listen, take out your travel log or journal and look back over the week. Consider what you have learned about God’s invitation, including what excites or frightens you, what God may be inviting you toward, and how you have responded.
Then reflect on this question:
What about God’s grace makes me most thankful?
Try to make your answer personal and specific. Are you thankful that grace found you, forgave you, gave you another opportunity, restored something broken, or promised never to abandon you? Has God’s grace carried you through a season you could not have survived alone?
Write your answer and allow it to become a prayer of gratitude.
You have not arrived simply because you have started—and that is okay. You do not need to see the entire road ahead. You only need to remain rooted in Jesus and trust His grace for the next step.
This is the invitation to the journey of a lifetime. Welcome to The Journey.
