What if God’s love has been guiding you longer than you realized?

Every journey needs a map—something that helps us recognize where we are, identify where we are going, and find the road that will take us there. In this episode of Rediscovering Faith, Pastor Evan Ryder explores how God’s everlasting love serves as a map on our journey of grace.

Our central Scripture is Jeremiah 31:3:

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.”

These words introduce us to one of the most hopeful truths in Wesleyan theology: prevenient grace, sometimes called seeking grace. Prevenient grace is the grace of God that comes before. It is God working in our lives before we recognize him, understand the gospel, or know how to respond. Before we begin searching for God, God is already seeking us. Before we know which direction to travel, his love is already pointing us toward home.

John 1:9 describes Jesus as “the true light that gives light to everyone.” God does not leave us alone in the darkness, expecting us to discover the road by ourselves. Through Jesus Christ, God shines light into our lives, awakens our spiritual curiosity, and enables us to recognize the next step on the journey.

That light may initially appear as a question:

Is there more to life than this?

Why do I still feel empty?

Could God really love me?

What would happen if I prayed?

What if I opened the Bible or walked into a church?

Those questions may seem small, but they can be signs that God’s grace is already at work. The curiosity, longing, conviction, or restlessness you feel may be evidence that the God you are searching for has already been seeking you.

God’s prevenient grace does not force us into a relationship with him. Love cannot be coerced. Instead, God’s grace awakens us, draws us, and gives us the freedom to respond. Like a map, grace helps us see where we are and points us toward where we need to go. We may not yet understand the entire route, but God gives us enough light to take the next step.

In this Christian devotional episode, we explore:

• What prevenient grace means within Wesleyan-Holiness theology
• How God’s love draws us before we recognize him
• Why spiritual curiosity may be evidence of grace
• How Jesus brings light and direction into our brokenness
• Why we do not have to understand the entire journey before taking the next step
• How Jeremiah 31:3 and John 1:9 reveal a God who seeks the lost
• What it means to trust God when the road ahead remains unclear

You may be walking through unfamiliar territory today. Perhaps your life has taken a turn you did not expect. You may be facing pain you cannot explain, questions you cannot answer, or decisions you do not know how to make. You may wish God would unfold the entire map and show you exactly what will happen next.

Most of the time, God does not reveal the complete journey at once. Instead, he reminds us that we are loved. He awakens a desire to know him. He places truth along our path. He shines enough light for us to take one faithful step.

Grace begins with the assurance that you are not wandering alone.

God is not standing at some distant destination, impatiently waiting for you to find the correct road. He is already reaching toward you. His light is shining. His grace is active. His everlasting love is drawing you home.

As you listen, consider this question:

What if God’s love has been guiding me longer than I realized?

Reflect on the questions, relationships, desires, and unexpected moments that have caused you to reach toward something beyond yourself. Could these be signs of God’s seeking grace? Could Jesus already be shining light onto your road? Could the God you are trying to find have been pursuing you all along?

This episode is part of “The Journey,” a Rediscovering Faith series about following Jesus on the journey of grace. Whether you are exploring Christianity, returning to faith, seeking spiritual direction, or growing as a disciple of Jesus, you are invited to discover the God whose love meets you where you are and leads you toward new life.

You may not understand the whole map yet. That is all right.

The journey begins with this promise:

God has loved you with an everlasting love, and he is drawing you with unfailing kindness.
