Identity 101: Rediscovering Who You Are in Christ (So Your Kids Can Too)

Godly parenting requires teaching our children what God believes about them, not just what we believe about God. We must first understand our own identity in Christ before we can effectively pass that knowledge to our children.
• God knew you before He formed you in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5)
• God knew your name before He made the world (Ephesians 1:4-5)
• God wrote a book about you (Psalm 139:16)
• God cares about everything you do and say (Psalm 139:1-4)
• God created you with His very hands (Psalm 139:13-14)
• God calls you His daughter (2 Corinthians 6:18, John 1:12)
• Lies spoken over us as children tend to last the longest
• When we forget who we are, our families suffer
• Understanding our identity as daughters of the King changes everything

Introduction to Identity Basics
Speaker 1This is Jenna Marie Masters with the Real Moms Real Faith Podcast . I am so glad you're here so you can be encouraged to trust God with all the things one day at a time . This episode is going to be about identity . I know there's a million things out there about identity , but the first thing I want to say is godly parenting isn't just teaching our children what we believe about God . It's actually teaching them what God believes about them . And sometimes I think that we miss this because we think it's built in that they're just going to know their value and know who God called them to be , and that's just not true . That's something that's taught . It's taught to us through his word , through his revelation , and he made us parents for a reason Our kids are not born knowing all the things . That's why there's mamas , that's why there's daddies . I think identity is so important right now because it's hard to teach our kids what God believes about them in this world , and it's going to teach our kids what God believes about them in this world , and it's going to be even harder to teach our kids if we don't even know what God believes about us . So here's Identity Basics 101 . And this is why I'm going to share this , because if moms don't know who they are in Christ , how are they going to teach their kids who they are in Christ ? We live in a world right now that tells us that you get to decide who you are , and I'm just going to leave that statement right there and you can take it however you like , but a lot of people are going to try to tell you and your children who they are . People are going to try to tell you who you are as a mom , as a wife , as a believer , and what they say is either going to be true or not true . There's nothing in the middle .
Speaker 1Let me tell you something A couple of years ago , I had something happen in a relationship and it just reset my whole identity . I am not a super young mom , but something happened in this instant that I realized I had let this person's thoughts of me shape a lot of my identity , my whole life , and when this whole instance happened , I just kind of came crashing down and I mourned and I felt empty and I felt rejected and I just felt worthless , and that's not okay . That's not that person's fault , that's on me not standing in who I am as a child of God . And it was really funny because after this thing happened with this person in my life , I had a phone call the next day from a middle school principal asking me if I would come speak to all the kids about their identity . And it just made me laugh out loud because I felt like how am I supposed to teach this if I'm struggling with it myself ? And I really felt like God orchestrated that phone call , because it was like he was saying to me I see where you're struggling and right now I want you to go back and study this . I want you to study identity in the scriptures so you can teach other people about it . But it's really because you need to be reminded and he called me to go back to the basics and really , when it comes down to it , if you want to know who you really are , you have to spend time with the one who made
Six Biblical Truths About Identity
Speaker 1you . I'm going to be going into these scriptures a little bit deeper and how to relate them to your children next week , but right now I just want to say to you , mom , and to me as a mom and as a woman Number one God knew you before he made you .
Speaker 1Jeremiah 1.5 says before I formed you in the womb , I knew you . Number two comes from Ephesians 1.4-5 . God knew your name before he made the world , even as he chose us in him , before the foundation of the world , that we should be holy and blameless before him . In love , he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ , according to the purpose of his will . Number three God wrote a book about you .
Speaker 1In Psalm 139 , 16 , it says your eyes saw my unformed substance . In your book were written every one of them , the days that were formed for me when as yet there was none of them . So , number four God cares about everything you do and say . We see . In Psalm 139 , one through four , it says this oh Lord , you have searched me and you know me . You know when I sit down and when I rise up . You discern my thoughts from afar . You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways , even before a word is on my tongue . Behold , oh Lord , you know it all together .
Speaker 1Number five God created you with his very hands . In Psalm 139 , 13 through 14 , it says this For you formed me in my inward parts . You knitted me together in my mother's womb . I praise you , for I am fearfully and wonderfully made . Also , we have here number six . God calls you daughter . It says in 2 Corinthians 6 , 18 , and I will be a father to you and you will be my sons and daughters , says the Lord Almighty In John 1 , 12, . It says but to all who believe him and accepted him , he gave the right to become children of God . See how very much our father loves us , for he calls us his children and that is what we are .
Speaker 1So just to recap there on those scriptures , think of this who are you ? We are called by name . We are created on purpose and with purpose . We are known by God . We are written about by the author of the universe and we are daughter of the king of heaven . Who you are matters to God and he's written it all over his word for us to read and find
The Power of Childhood Lies
Speaker 1. But sometimes these things don't feel true , right , and because life is loud and lies are loud and busyness is loud and we forget .
Speaker 1I was taking a writing class a couple of years ago and the teacher asked this question what is a lie that has been spoken over you that you've believed ? So we all had to sit down and identify a lie spoken about our identity . And you know what is fascinating ? Every single one of us we're probably all moms from the ages of , you know , maybe 28-ish to 48-ish . Every single woman in that room realized that the lie that was spoken over them , that they still believed , was spoken over them when they were little kids . Lies spoken over you when you're little seem to last the longest . So think of this in your kids . Take a moment and think about the lie you believed about yourself right now . When did that happen ? Who said it ? Do you still believe it ? Whenever I ask this question to a group of women , the answer is summed up like this they're not enough of something , they aren't smart enough , they aren't pretty enough , they're not nice enough , good enough . You fill in the blank when the enemy wants us to live in this space . I mean he had me living in this space for most of my adult life . I hate to say that , but it is true , because the enemy doesn't want you to know who you are , because most of my audience here is moms , I'm assuming you have all seen the Lion King .
Speaker 1I am going to apply Simba to my biblical and spiritual insight today . So bear with me , apply Simba to my biblical and spiritual insight today . So bear with me . If you remember , after that terrible thing that happens between Simba and his dad , you know the part that maybe some of you fast forward for your kids . And Scar pretty much lies to him and tells him it's his fault and he runs away and he ends up growing up with that smelly warthog and that cute little Timon guy , growing up with that smelly warthog and the cute little Timon guy . He believed a lie and then he forgets who he is
Identity Lessons from Disney Characters
Speaker 1. The enemy had Simba right where he wanted him to be . Scar goes in and just takes over and there's a drought and now they're in a terrible state , all because Simba believed a lie and forgot who he was and because of it his people suffered . Hear me if you forget who you are , mom , your people will suffer . And some of you listening maybe you don't know who you are , maybe you have no idea what I'm talking about and you have not heard any of these scriptures before .
Speaker 1Okay , so I'm going to go back into Disney again . Disney is good for something . See , remember the movie Rapunzel ? Rapunzel never knew who she was . Maybe you're like her right now .
Speaker 1Rapunzel was born a princess and then stolen away . She never knew she was royalty . She never knew she was royalty . She never knew she was cherished . She was a prisoner and she didn't even know it . Maybe right now you're a prisoner and you don't even know it . And think about Rapunzel's life . How much of her life was wasted because she was living under a lie . How many opportunities are wasted when we live under a lie ?
Speaker 1I recently had to ask myself that question and when I allowed God to remove the blanket of false identity I'd be living under and take away the lie , I realized I can't get that time back . But I am so thankful that God has given me the days ahead to fully embrace and lean into who he's made me to be . I feel free Because , just like with Simba and Rapunzel , everything changes when we realize who we are . We're part of something bigger . We're part of a kingdom . We need to rise up and take our place in it as women and as mothers , for the sake of our people . For the sake of our people , meaning our children and the people in our homes and the people around us and our communities . So , like I said , this episode is just Identity 101 , going back to the basics because I needed to do it . I've been a believer my whole life and I needed to go back to the basics and God showed me that . So I'm thinking that perhaps somebody listening here needed to go back to the basics to strip away some lies .
Speaker 1Reflect for a moment on who you believe you are , and maybe you know who you are , but you aren't living in that identity . So if we want to teach our kids who they are in Christ , you have to believe this about yourself first . God's word tells us Mama , you are called by name . Before God spoke , let there be light . He spoke . Let there be you , my friend . You were created on purpose and with purpose . Daughter , you are known by God . The King of heaven has written about you in a book .
Practical Application and Next Episode Preview
Speaker 1The author of the universe wrote your name down in a book before you were born and if you are listening right now , you are a daughter of the King of heaven . If you have trouble believing any one of these things , I'm going to all of the scriptures in this podcast notes today . I want you to go look up these verses and just read them over your life , meditate on them this week and ask God where am I not choosing to believe who I am in you Help me . Next week , we're gonna be talking about practical ways to speak identity into your children's lives . Next week's episode is going to be one of my favorite because it's super practical and it's changed our home .
Speaker 1If this podcast reminded you of a friend , could you please share it today ? Last week , I asked a question for you guys to answer on Instagram , and the question was what is one thing God showed you about himself while you were in a season
Sharing and Closing Thoughts
Speaker 1of waiting ? I'm going to share the one that my cousin Rose shared . She's also an adoptive mom and she said this during the pandemic . In between trips to India to pick up my daughter June , the nine month waiting period was so hard , but when we were in India the second trip , one of our drivers came to know Jesus . God showed me that he would do anything to save one . Even that meant nine months of pain and stress on me . This man will be in heaven with Jesus for eternity . God is always in the way . He is always working . There's always a reason . We often don't get to know why , but this time we did . I just think that is so beautiful . Thank you for sharing that , and she actually has a really beautiful daily devotion on Instagram and it's at the dot meditating mama . So go on and check her out too , because she's super encouraging and I just love her Podcasts at all . Has blessed you or encouraged you If you could take a minute and hop on to Apple podcasts and rate it and give a review .
Speaker 1It helps other moms find the podcast . The more reviews and the more ratings it has , it will pop up quicker for search engines for other moms who need encouragement . So it would be so great if you could do that . I super appreciate it . I can't wait to have you join me next week . Have a great week . Don't forget to follow , save and share and subscribe .
