The Comparison Trap

Caught in a comparison spiral right after my successful book launch, I found myself staring at an author with millions of followers and questioning my own journey. Sound familiar? That voice whispering "you're not enough" isn't yours—it's inherited programming passed down, and it doesn't need to rule your mind.

This episode takes you through my raw, honest journey of transforming comparison into personal growth using what I call the Four A's framework: Awareness (catching the comparison program when it activates), Attitude (choosing what meaning we give it), Action (deciding how to respond), and Alignment (remembering we're exactly where we need to be).

Speaker 1:

I just that that my heart is, if you are listening to this and you are like feeling this call to more feeling, this call to different feeling, this call to just a different way of living, different way of being, like this, this is for you, different way of being, this is for you, and I am so utterly convinced that God is going to use this book to do some incredible things. I have no idea what I really don't, and my intention is. I had to get over myself to be able to actually promote this, and it's a lesson that we all have to. If we want to get a message out in the world, we have to get over ourselves. So that's a little plug before we get into the meat of the content. Okay, the meat of the content comparison. So I want to tell you incredible, incredible book launch. Incredible, incredible, met my expectations and then some.

Speaker 1:

And here I was, one day after this book launch, what should have been pure celebration. I find myself spiraling like spiraling into comparison mode. So to take you to the scene there I was scrolling Instagram, which was mistake number one, of course, I see an author who's got just a million plus followers and I'm like that familiar feeling just rippled through my body. This is going to be too hard, laura. You're never going to be as successful as this person. How are you ever going to get that large of an audience? First of all, why does that having a large audience matter? It's more about the purity of your heart. And second, you have no idea, laura, how long they've been at this. So it was like all this is happening. But then my little, you know not little, but it was incredible. It was an incredible book launch. It felt small. I was making it insignificant. This comparison program has been with me for a long time and it's been running in the background whispering stories about who's ahead and who's behind and who's worthy and who's not worthy.

Speaker 1:

And old Laura would have tried to silence this voice completely. She would have fought it, she would have analyzed it, she would have just tried to out-logic her way out of it. And this time was different. So this time it was like okay, I have a higher amount of self-awareness. In this scene, I'm going to zoom out and be like, okay, what if I actually don't need to break free? What if it's about really harnessing it? Okay, so this is it, the awareness game changer.

Speaker 1:

I had to get honest about where that voice was coming from, that voice telling me I'm not enough, or like that's not mine, I can't do that. That, my friends, that's inherited programming that's been passed down generation to generation to generation who believed they had to earn their worth, earn their worth. And I caught myself. Okay, why am I giving this voice so much attention? And then I remembered my why. So my why is I? Just I genuinely want to have an impact on so many others' lives because I feel called. It's just, it's a calling, because I've experienced this immense inner peace and love and I want everyone else to experience that. Not because I need to be the biggest or the loudest or have the most followers. No, success isn't about the size of your platform, it's about the depth of your impact.

Speaker 1:

So here we go Back to the four A's. So the four A's is like my foundational work it's awareness, attitude, action, alignment. So this is what I did in my head, okay. Awareness, catching the comparison program when it activated Okay, being aware of it, all right, okay, I see this thing like it's rippling through my body. I feel like this immense jealousy. I'm comparing myself to this person who I don't even know.

Speaker 1:

Attitude, choosing what meaning I give it, choosing what meaning I give it. So I made it mean that I was less. But what if it means I'm Laura, you're right on track. This is a good thing. This is a good thing. This is a good sign. You want to have this much of impact. That's the new story.

Speaker 1:

So, choosing that with your attitude, and then action, laura. What if their mission is exactly your mission? What if they're just genuinely wanting to help as many people? Oh, my gosh, all right. So that brings us to alignment, remembering I'm exactly where I need to be. I'm in the present moment, focused on my intention in this present moment, and I don't know what the future will bring, nor do I need to figure it out. If I stay aligned and I know who I am and I'm acting according to my values, pretty sure I'm going to be okay.

Speaker 1:

So this is the inner work, this is the personal development work, this is the work, and maybe we should not even call it work. Maybe we should come up with a different. Reach out to me. Tell me me, what should we call this? But the sooner you realize that you'll always have this inner work to do, the sooner the breakthrough happens. The game is already won when you realize you're already it. You're it. You were perfectly wonderfully designed, you as you are, and now it's just a process of becoming, of witnessing yourself catching it, zooming out of your body Like who do I actually want to be right now?

Speaker 1:

Who is this main character in the story? Am I actually proud to be this person? Is this the person I want to be actually proud to be this person? Is this the person I want to be? So what about you? What comparison programs try to steal your joy when life feels maybe too good to be true. What comparison programs? Maybe it's a colleague who seems to have it all figured out. Maybe it's the person in career transition who's landing opportunities faster. Maybe it's a parent who makes motherhood look effortlessly. Maybe it's an entrepreneur who launched after you but seems miles ahead.

Speaker 1:

So here's what I want you to remember you don't need to break free from the voices. You don't need to break free, you just need to be aware of them. Be aware when that familiar voice because you know it will it's going to show up saying no, no, no I don't want to self-sabotage no. So instead ask this is this true speaking or is this old programming running the show? Truth or old programming? Is the voice moving me toward my mission or away from it? Toward or away? What would I tell my best friend if they were having this thought? The most grounded people aren't those who never experience comparison. They're the ones who will notice it quickly and choose their response consciously because they're aware of it.

Speaker 1:

Your next right move of integrity, which I have to give, that shout out to Brendan Burchard, my coach. I learned his high performance coaching method and I've just been such a fan for him for a decade. He always says what is your next right move of integrity? Gosh, it's just such a great saying. Okay. So now it's my time to say, if any of this resonates, okay, you can reach out, you can share it with a friend. Great, and share it with a friend, you can join me for my next Pursue, your Purpose, workshop. I think there's maybe two spots left, maybe three, and in that workshop we'll dig in.

Speaker 1:

What are the comparison triggers? What are the things that you tell yourself? What are the stories you tell yourself? What are your gifts, what is your mission? What is a purpose statement that will get you so excited to get out of bed in the morning? You'll walk away with a personalized workbook that serves as your compass for decisions, plus a clear 30, 60, 90-day plan for living with intention. I mean, come on, people, this is not just about finding purpose, it's an activation, an activation of a deeper desire in you. And if that doesn't work for you, you can always book an activation call with me and we can examine what really lies beneath that voice that's saying you're not good enough or you're not whatever enough, and I'll help you see the path forward with clarity and confidence. And, especially if you're in career transition, this clarity from this activation call can accelerate your search by months, when you know exactly who you are and the gifts that you bring, and you can stand in that confidence and you know that opportunities are plentiful. And that confidence. And you know that opportunities are plentiful because, guess what, I'm also a recruiter. I know there's plenty of opportunities out there. So it's changing your perspective. If any of that interests, you go to lauraekingcom.

Speaker 1:

Sometimes we just have to get over ourselves. Sometimes we just have to have a conversation. Maybe one conversation is all that it takes to shift something big in you Whenever you feel misalignment. It's not asking you to be someone else, to pretend. It's asking you to be more you, fully you, because the world does not need another copy right, another copycat, or someone living someone else's dream. It needs your authentic contribution. Gosh, I am so rooting for you, I believe in you and I'm just so grateful for you just being here and listening to this. Go be just magnificent.
