SPEAKER_03

Welcome to Pour the Wine. It's romcom time, where we'll sip some wine and review all things romcom on the Hallmark channel. I'm Amy.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm Gary. And we'd like to thank you for listening to our podcast on your favorite podcast application like Spotify or Apple. And if you want to watch this, you can hop on over to YouTube at Pour the Wine, it's romcon time. And we'd like it if you would tell a friend or family member, share the wealth, people. Share the wealth.

SPEAKER_03

Share the wealth. I thought you were going to sing that whole thing. I wasn't sure where you were going with that.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

Tonight.

SPEAKER_00

My voice isn't there today.

SPEAKER_03

No, no. Isn't there?

SPEAKER_00

No, it's never.

SPEAKER_03

Oh my gosh. We are going to be talking about Christmas today. Yay! We do Christmas all year round, right? With our tinsel Tuesdays.

SPEAKER_00

Tinsel Tuesdays.

SPEAKER_03

Tinsel Tuesdays. And then, of course, during the holiday time, we may drop episodes on other days other than tinsel Tuesdays.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

As it happens, depending on how many we're reviewing that week. But this one, this particular one, during Countdown to Christmas of 2025, we did a random drawing of movies that we were going to review. We only chose one per weekend.

SPEAKER_00

Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Right? I don't think we did two. And then we were doing like the series like Mistletoe Murders and 12 Dates Till Christmas. And then we watched everything, and there were some that we really liked, and we're like, oh, we have to review that at some point. So here we are in March reviewing a single on the 25th, a Christmas movie. Because we watch Christmas year-round. Yes, we do.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, we do.

SPEAKER_03

No matter what time of year, it makes you feel good. It's a good pick-me-up for sure. Don't you think?

SPEAKER_00

I think so.

SPEAKER_03

Especially in this crazy world we're living in right now. So we're here for it. It originally aired on the Hallmark channel on Saturday, December 7th, 2025. And of course, stars the adorable Lindsay Fonseca and Daniel Lissing. And um, just side note, we did not really know much about Daniel Lissing except he was in some Hallmark movies. But now that we're watching Lynn Calls the Heart, that man does not age.

SPEAKER_01

No, he does not.

SPEAKER_03

We're on season one, and it's like what 10, 11, 12 years later, and he looks practically the same. So good for you, Daniel Lissing.

SPEAKER_01

He sure does.

SPEAKER_03

Um, of course, Lindsay, you know, we love Next Stop Christmas. Love, love, love that movie. It's one of our favorites. Um, I would say, wouldn't you?

SPEAKER_00

I yes, definitely.

SPEAKER_03

For Hallmark. Um, and we we recently watched, well, actually, it was during the holiday time. We watched Where Are You Christmas, which she is also in, and it is so good. We have to review that one too. Have to. I don't think, and you know what? We need to review Next Top Christmas.

SPEAKER_00

I don't think we've no one that one, right?

SPEAKER_03

So we're watching, as I mentioned, we're watching Daniel right now on season one, and one calls the heart. We had no idea. And when we saw Santa Tell Me, we didn't know about him either.

SPEAKER_00

No, we did not.

SPEAKER_03

No, we did not. We weren't that familiar with him. We saw that. We didn't have the podcast then for Santa Tell Me.

unknown

But yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, Jonathan Wright directed single on the 25th. He's directed many Hallmark productions, including one of our favorites, which is We Met in December.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, it was so good. That's another one we're going to be reviewing. We're going to review anything. Countdown to Christmas 2025. Yep.

SPEAKER_00

And just a few others are The Perfect Setting, The Royal Nanny. That was good. Six episodes of The Good Witch. And Love Romance and Chocolate. Chocolate. The writer of single on the 25th is Joey Botkin. She has an extensive list of Hallmark work, a Newport Christmas, 'tis the season to be Irish.

SPEAKER_03

That was cute too. That was cute.

SPEAKER_00

His and hers and never been Christy. Oh. Which we really like that one too.

SPEAKER_03

Mm-hmm. It always explains a lot when you read director and writer info. And I'm like, mm-hmm. Like that. Like that explains a lot about how much we enjoy or don't enjoy a movie.

SPEAKER_02

So yes. True, true, true.

SPEAKER_03

You can send us an email to pour the wine. It's romcomtime at gmail.com and let us know your thoughts about anything hallmark related. We're through Winter Escape and Love You Airy now. No. And we've seen one March movie so far, the new Hannah Swenson Sugar and Vice. Or let us know about anything Christmas. Did you watch Single on the 25th when it aired in December of 2025? Or are you just watching it more recently, like we are? Well, we watched it then and we just re-watched it to take our notes.

SPEAKER_00

So or if you have a favorite Christmas movie and you want us to review it on Tuesday, you can put that in there too.

SPEAKER_03

Put it, send us an email, let us know. We'd love to hear from you.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So let's go ahead and drop the synopsis.

SPEAKER_03

All right. The story follows a 30-something who spends Christmas alone in the city, Chicago, only to find unexpected companionship with a handsome neighbor.

SPEAKER_00

Do, do, do. And guess what? They're getting ready to turn that little river uh green.

SPEAKER_03

They are. It's almost St. Patrick's Day, the Chicago River, one of my favorite traditions. I grew up near Chicago. I'm a Chicagoan, sort of ish.

SPEAKER_00

All right. So this is the part of the podcast where we let you know that we're probably going to drop some spoilers. So if you haven't seen it yet, stop the podcast. Go watch it. Come back and let us know what you think.

SPEAKER_03

Or listen. It might pique your interest. Listen to our full podcast review and then go watch it. Yes. So let's get to it. Let's get to it. What did you think? What's your oh my goodness? What did you think of this one?

SPEAKER_00

I I actually love this movie. I I I really thought that Lindsay and Daniel had great chemistry. You know, the romantic side, the the fun side, the playful side. I love the story of just because you're single doesn't mean that there's something wrong with you. Believe in yourself, you know, in your self-worth. Um, and don't be afraid to put yourself out there during the holidays. And on the flip side, you know, people who are married or have a significant other, and you have a friend that is single, you know what? Reach out to them, see if they want to come over for some munchies. Some munchies during the holidays, you know?

SPEAKER_03

Some snacks, some apps.

SPEAKER_00

But I really, really enjoyed it. And the music in this was really, really good.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, the music was.

SPEAKER_00

And the costumes were really, really good. The wardrobe. So the wardrobe. Yeah. Not costumes, but yeah, the wardrobe. And the interesting part to me is the fact that she in every scene had like a red dress or a maroon dress.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, when she was fancy in the scenes where she was dressed up. Yeah, she wrote it.

SPEAKER_00

So what about you? What'd you think?

SPEAKER_03

I would second everything that you said. I think, you know, we've seen some movies where the focus is on, you know, two actors mainly. You don't have a lot of the the um the supporting characters. I mean, we had a few in this one, but they're not in it constantly. I mean, the focus is really on the two of them.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Right. So, um, what is it, Nell and Cooper? Right? Yeah, right. I didn't know um, so and sometimes that doesn't work because you just need something else. But it it totally worked in this. I mean, we were in from the beginning. I always love a Chicago scene. It doesn't always make it in, you know, Chicago, you know, it's kind of part of the story, a little bit, right? Like the downtown and things, but um, I just thought it really worked. I thought the the messaging was great, and I haven't really thought about it. I mean, I haven't really spent too much of my adult life single, to be totally honest. So um, you know, it would get tiring. I just I appreciated the points that came across. Like if everybody asks you, why are you still single? How come you're not dating anybody? Like that would get very old very quickly. And you do have to become comfortable with yourself going out to dinner by yourself. And I just I just appreciated the messaging, which I'll talk a little bit more about in in the cheers in general. But overall, I thought it was cute. You know, you said Lindsay and Daniel had such great chemistry, such great banter. There were a lot of funny quips throughout the movie. I mean, Daniel was so good at delivering them, and Lindsay threw in some too. And I just, I mean, I, you know, we really enjoyed it when we watched it. And I remember us both saying, we have to review this. This is so stinking cute. Yeah, we loved it when it was over, and so here we are. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So was it a meat cute or did they already know each other?

SPEAKER_03

Well, they already knew each other.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

They already knew each other. So I don't think we have the meat cute in the classic sense. Yeah, you know, the the first time it was kind of cute, so to speak, um, when they do see each other, when we see them see each other for the first time.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

Even though they've already known each other, and you know, and and Nell's kind of like, Oh, I have to make small talk, you know. I forget what she says. Um, like cut the conversation shuffle, and her friend is like, what is that? And she's like, Well, we have to talk about the weather, you know, which is pretty common, I guess, you know, because they both live in the same what condo or apartment. And those were very nice, by the way. Can we just Yeah, I think they're a studio uh yeah, that those probably not huge, very huge. In Chicago, yeah. They were very, very nice. So I was very impressed in the building they lived in. So I'm not sure where that would be in Chicago, but yeah, I know they have them, but it's too cold in Chicago for me. Yeah, so so she so I thought that was kind of cute. And then of course he goes right into so it's cold outside, right? When he's when they see each other, and that's kind of cute and funny. And yeah, it worked.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So you liked it.

SPEAKER_03

I liked it. I liked it. What about you? What'd you think? I already said it.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_03

I'm sorry. Am I supposed to be paying attention to you?

SPEAKER_00

I'm totally not saying single on the 25th.

SPEAKER_03

That's my fault. That's my favorite.

SPEAKER_00

Let's get into some favorite, let's get into some favorite scenes. What was one of your favorites?

SPEAKER_03

Okay, so we're gonna talk about what, three? Three, we're gonna pick our top three.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, let's do it.

SPEAKER_03

Um, okay, so I will go with I'll probably go beginning, middle, and end of the movie, I guess. That's fine. If I have to choose. I enjoyed a lot of scenes. These are just ones that, you know, kind of stood out. Um, when she gets locked out of her apartment, she goes down to get some Chinese food. And then, you know, he lets her in and she has to go. She realizes her, he not only lets her in the building, but she goes to go into her apartment and it's locked also. And she has to go into his place for a while and it's not decorated.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_03

And, you know, it was just kind of a cool scene because it's like the first time they're really getting to know each other, even though they've lived next to each other.

SPEAKER_02

Right.

SPEAKER_03

For, you know, who knows how long. And, you know, she's got Chinese food and they had the whole fortune cookie thing where hers is blank and she's kind of like, of course, you know, and then the next one says, your last fortune's gonna come to you. It was just really, it was just really cute. And they you you kind of get the, you know, you get the whole, you know, she was she had plans for her family, yeah, and you know, she was now she was gonna go home instead of coming to her. And it's kind of where he's like, No, why won't you do that stuff? You should just stay and enjoy, you know. Yeah, you shouldn't be upset about being here and being alone on Christmas and you know, own your aloneness or whatever, you know, your singleness.

SPEAKER_00

So we all have our slots, yeah.

SPEAKER_03

I just thought that that was really cute. They had good banter in that scene, and um, I uh their chemistry was really good in that scene. So I that would be one of my favorites. What about you?

SPEAKER_00

That was actually my first favorite.

SPEAKER_03

So was it really all right? So you get to go on to number two for you.

SPEAKER_00

All right, so um kind of playing off of that the next day, Nell makes um Cooper a reef, right? Yes, so when she goes to give it to him, he's actually coming out uh go to go somewhere. And when she hands it to him, um, she just says, you know, I want to give you this for helping me uh yesterday. And then there was something, there was an exchange, and then she said he said um she hands it to him the way I said it made it made you think I wanted something. And Nell says, Is that a thank you? Like he like she's uh he didn't have any decoration, so she's giving them the wreath for decoration, and he's like, Did I make it sound like I wanted some? And she's like, Is that a thank you?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, she that was that was kind of funny.

SPEAKER_00

That was a cute little scene, you know.

SPEAKER_03

But yeah, you're right. The way he delivers that and the way I said it made you think I wanted some, something, you know, and she's like, I forgot that she says, Um, is that a thank you? Right. Yeah, that's cute. That's just part of the banter, right? That they that we get throughout the whole that was a really cute scene.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. So what's another one of yours?

SPEAKER_03

I agree. Um, I'm trying to choose because I really liked the carriage ride. And okay, so there's I don't know if I'm gonna go with the carriage ride or when he crashes her or the mixer. Oh, it's so hard to choose. I had so many. Okay, I have some honorable mentions. I'll just say the carriage ride. I'll say um another honorable mention would be when he crashes her Christmas card shoot. And I won't go into details, but uh the Cooper's when he has a college mixer boot camp for her, and he has like a bar set up because she said that she's gonna go to this college mixer and he's gonna help her, you know, be single and mingle and not be afraid to get out there, right? Even though she's single. And he's and so he's got the bar set up, he's got some food on on his um, he's got an actual like a table set up that's like a bar, and then he's got food on a buffet, sort of it's you know, you know, simulating a buffet or whatever. And she goes to eat it and it's cat food, and that's a whole other thing. But I just thought it was really cute, you know, and he's like, um, position yourself where you feel powerful, like the bar to avoid, you know, to avoid conversation, you know, at the buffet, make sure you have food in your mouth. And I thought it was really cute when he said he's made a bingo game of what people say to single people, and he try and he keeps track, and you know, and it's so true, they probably do say the same things over and over and over again. And you know, and the takeaway is that you know they're okay being on their own and you know, putting themselves out there. So I thought that was a really cute scene when she went to his, you know, would you would you go by yourself? I probably would. I mean, if I was single and I, you know, I'm not gonna stay cooped up in a house, right, you know, or an apartment or whatever. I mean, you gotta get out there and meet people.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I agree.

SPEAKER_03

I mean, I might not want to go, I might be dreading it, but you know, I would definitely go. Yeah, I think. Me too. Me too.

SPEAKER_00

So, what about your third and final scene since we had um my third and final scene was not final, but what we're doing, you know, limiting it you know, for cheers, yeah, or favorite scene. Yeah, um, when they were sitting alone at separate tables but facing each other in a restaurant. The first time, and this is where they start to tell each other about themselves, yeah. And he tells Nell how what made him feel himself was a polka album. It was an album that had these polka guys that played polka music to uh the 80s hits, right? He said it's they stunk, but it was something that made him feel himself, like he could be himself around people. And I thought that was that was very interesting because later on in the movie she gives him a gift and it's a CD that she had found of that same group, and he had that kind of serendipity moment when um I can't remember a guy's name in serendipity John Kuzak's um his fiance hands him the book that he's been looking for throughout the month. Jack, that's it, Jack.

SPEAKER_03

Is it Jack?

SPEAKER_00

And uh I just thought it was a very, very cute scene.

SPEAKER_03

So make sure we're right. Is it Jack? I think it's Jack. Wait a minute, wait a minute.

SPEAKER_00

Is it Jack? I don't know.

SPEAKER_03

I don't know. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

But it was because she kept saying, I need you to open it. He's like, but I don't want to open it until Christmas.

SPEAKER_03

It's Jonathan. Jonathan Traeger, right? I'm like, Jack isn't right. I couldn't think in the moment. And she's of course Sarah.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Yeah. So I thought that was one of my scenes.

SPEAKER_03

So what's your last well to RD1? No, no, no. I'm not this I enjoyed this scene, but to expand on what you said is like, you know, they go to the restaurant and she thinks they're gonna sit together, right? And he ends up sitting at a different table but facing her. And so that was just a really cool and again he's trying to, you know, give her all these hints on how to be there. He's like, Don't stare at the the couples, don't you know, don't look at your phone, just breathe, relax. And so she's trying to learn, you know, how to do all that stuff by herself.

SPEAKER_00

And yeah, so yeah, he tells her she's the main character in his story.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah, it kind of gives you a different perspective, you know. I I would think when you're single, you're kind of like, oh, okay, you know. Um we just have a hard time choosing, really liked the end. It's gonna have honorable mention, but I'm gonna go with when they go to his family's house. Now he has done my favorites all these like boot camps for her, and now she's gonna teach him because he's like, My family is, you know, be ready. They're gonna ask these questions. And she's like, This is what we're gonna do. Tip one, costume, because they're like hats, and they put on hats, you know. Tip two, defensive, and it was just cute, the um, you know, how how she flipped the switch on him, right? She was she was teaching him in that moment. What'd she say? Like the what's the Star Wars, the the student that's gonna be the master or yeah, yeah, yeah, that was really funny. So and then she gives, you know, she gives him, you know, uh tips on how to exist and what to do, and she's like, stay close to the buffet. I just love that full circle moment. I thought that was adorable and cute. And then she's like, play with the kids and pets, you know, because they're not gonna ask you questions, you know. And then she handles his cousin when his cousin has a crazy question, and that that whole scene, you know, and that's when she I think she admits, is is that when she admits she caught feelings, or was that later after that?

SPEAKER_00

I think it was later.

SPEAKER_03

Later after that. Okay, but anyway, but that whole scene, and then you have his mom talking to her, and um, I just I just adored that.

SPEAKER_00

I thought that was really and don't forget about the elf dance, the elf dance, yeah. That was fun.

SPEAKER_03

That was fun, so stinking cute, so stinking cute. All right, so what about you?

SPEAKER_00

Um last one. Well, um, I was gonna say that for last, but um I don't know. I think as far as my my favorite scenes go, there were a lot of them, but the ones that we just talked about, I think they were my favorite scenes.

SPEAKER_03

The top, yeah. I mean, you have when they're watching Rudolph together and they're sitting on the couch and chemistry, like you said, and you know, and I've mentioned it just was so touch hands and everything.

SPEAKER_00

And they're talking about the bird that that swims, and and he goes, Yeah, there's a lot of fish in this sea, and that kind of ruins the moment.

SPEAKER_03

You know, right, right, their hands pull away from each other.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah, that was another good scene. So all right. Well, let's move on to cheers. Cheers. Yep.

SPEAKER_03

Um, I kind of mentioned it at the beginning, I just, you know, I think the whole notion of, you know, it's okay to be single, but it's also okay to be single and want a relationship.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Like the two don't have to be mutually exclusive. Like you can be single and kind of be a little bit sad that you don't. Have a relationship, but at the same time, you can put yourself out there, you know. And I love the the moment at um Cooper's work party that she has planned and everything. And she finds somebody who's she she notices a woman who's single and kind of like shying away. And and she's like, you know, my aloneness wasn't a problem to be fixed. That's one of the things that she realizes. And I thought, that's really, really good. Very powerful. Like everybody's like, oh, you need to hook up with somebody. No, you don't. You know, when it when it happens, it's gonna happen. And she's like, don't shrink, don't hide, own it, but it's okay to be sad. So, you know, it kind of shows both sides. Like you can get out there, you can go to dinner by yourself. Yeah, you can do all those things independently, but you can also at the same time hope eventually you find love or, you know, and a romantic relationship. And you have those, you know, baking moments where you're throwing flour on each other, like she said, or whatever.

SPEAKER_00

So rolling pins.

SPEAKER_03

Uh yeah. I mean, it's it's hard for me personally to relate to just because, like I said, I, you know, most of my adulthood, I spent very little time single as an adult. So um, you know, I didn't really have to do all do that. Um, but you know, and that's just my personality, I guess.

SPEAKER_00

I like to well, there were a moment in my life where I was single a lot and I went to movies by myself. Now there is one thing I won't do, and that's slow dance by myself.

SPEAKER_03

Well, now that was, yeah, when he went on the dance floor, there's a scene work over. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

They won't do that. I'll fast it.

SPEAKER_03

I think, doesn't she say like hard pass or something? She's like, absolutely not, you know, like that might be one thing where you don't. I just I think I think they kind of showed both sides of it. Yeah, you know, and they showed that, and I like how they're like, let's be alone together, you know. We can be alone, but we can be alone together with what we're doing. So I just thought that that overall notion, and you know, the cheer is that it was just it was just enjoyable to watch. I I love her, he's so great too, and it was just the flow was great. It was almost effortless from the beginning to the end. And, you know, like I said, we really enjoyed it when we watched it in December, knew we wanted to review it, and I'm glad we watched it again recently in March.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, because uh, you know, I thought you know, Lindsay and Daniel again, their chemistry is awesome. They made it look effortlessly the supporting cast was was great. Yeah, her friend, her best friend, and yeah, I mean it was just enough to move the movie along.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So yeah. And I and one of my cheers is I I'm so glad that he was a good guy and not that jerk like his his buddy Thomas.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, well, well, yeah. Well, I don't know, was his buddy a jerk?

SPEAKER_00

Well, he kind of I I think he inadvertently Yeah, but but then you f you kind of find out he he felt the same way. He felt like he didn't belong and he wanted to be that cool guy, and you know, so he was kind of going through the same thing too. But yeah, I'm just glad that he was a good guy. He always seemed to help people throughout the movie, and I thought that was that was really good.

SPEAKER_03

Is are those your cheers? I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_00

Those are my cheers.

SPEAKER_03

Your cheers.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Um, yeah, I mean, I think I like that they, you know, there's a moment where the of course the leads have a little bickering thing, and it wasn't even really that big of a deal.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_03

You know, like you you find out that he and then they come together pretty quickly, but um, I guess, you know, they have to have that. Hallmark. All right. So did you have any jeers?

SPEAKER_00

Anyway, no, I I just thought everything was pretty good. I mean Yeah. No, I didn't have any. What about you?

SPEAKER_03

No notes.

SPEAKER_00

No.

SPEAKER_03

I the only thing I would say is what I kind of what I just mentioned, I didn't mean to mention it there, is that I they just didn't need that fight. The little the little mini thing at the end. It it kind of all worked. You don't necessarily have to have that. And it like I it wasn't even that big of a deal, but I just don't I don't think you needed it. And I think her hers was a bit of an overreaction, you know, to to him saying initially that he he kind of felt badly for her, so he was hanging out with her, right? I think it was something to that effect, and so she took it personally, but it's like, I mean, is that a bad thing? He was being a nice guy, you know. I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

I'm like, we did have fun together, you did, you know, you know, they they hung out, they had been hanging out with each other, and then to find out that he said something like that, and it was kind of the way Thomas had was talking to his his date, it made it sound like it was a pity, you know, a pity thing. But it really wasn't. He just wanted to he wanted to make sure she wasn't alone on Christmas, so you know, yeah. But it worked.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I I think there were just a lot of good, just a lot of really good strong moments in general, other than that one jeer. So throughout so you have any more jeers or is it um nope, that would be it for me. And I have to say a cheer, you mentioned it at the beginning. The music, the songs were great, the soundtrack was great. Yeah, loved every single bit of the music and soundtrack of this movie. Yep. Really, really worked. So, out of five ornaments, how many are you hanging on the tree for this one?

SPEAKER_00

I'm giving this one a four and uh jungle.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, same 4.5 from me too. Yeah, yeah. It was really really good, really enjoyable, really great chemistry. Um, I would, if it's on, we're gonna have it on. We might even sit down and watch it because it's so, you know, we I enjoyed it. So um, but it would definitely be one that I think everyone should check out.
