SPEAKER_04

Welcome to Pour the Wine. It's rom com time where we'll sip some wine and review all things rom com on the Hallmark channel. I'm Amy.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm still Carrie. Still?

SPEAKER_04

Do you plan on changing your name anytime soon?

SPEAKER_00

Maybe. We just watched a murmur mystery.

SPEAKER_03

You caught me off guard. You caught me off guard.

SPEAKER_00

I just wanted to make you laugh.

SPEAKER_03

That was funny. All right. All right.

SPEAKER_04

Well, we have a little bit of Hallmark news to share. We have some Lacey Shaber things that have come up lately since the last time we talked.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Or the last time.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, the big news, the big news. So she has a new product line. Well, her Lacey Shaber collection now has a spring collection. So she she started what at Christmas? I don't think it started in the fall. I think it started at Christmas. Yeah, it was in Christmas. When the whole thing dropped. And we did buy a few pieces that we use. And actually, we might be using them year-round. I don't know. Don't tell anybody. Um, even though they're a Christmas thing, but we love them.

SPEAKER_01

Yes.

SPEAKER_04

So she's got some really cute, she's got the mini bowls again. She has a really cute pitcher, like a it might be glass, I'm not 100% certain. Or maybe it's plastic, but a a picture and some glasses that match with the bows on it. She's got mugs. Um, just really, really adorable bladders for the spring. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

No, well, she probably does, so right, right, right.

SPEAKER_04

No, I'm talking about the spring specifically collection. Yeah. There there might be one. I'm not sure if we've seen it or not. But just really, really cute stuff. Hopefully, we'll see it soon. I know we checked at our Hallmark, our local Hallmark store last week. What last weekend, and it wasn't there. It was boomed. I know. I know it was announced.

SPEAKER_00

And although there was a cutout of Tyler Hines.

SPEAKER_04

There well, yeah, that's usually that's usually around. But we didn't see it yet, so we're hoping to see it soon. Yeah. And speaking of Lacey Shabert, she announced on her Instagram within the last week that she is going to be starring in a series that's going to air on Hallmark Plus called Paris is always a good idea. And it is based on the book with the same name by Jen McKinley. McKinley, I believe. Yeah. They are currently in production. She's been posting on Instagram. Go check it out. The Eiffel Tower. I'm telling you, she's getting a little bit more. Good locations. Yes, yes. It looks so cute. You know, I haven't read the book. Maybe I should read it before. And she said coming soon, but we don't know when. Soon is how soon. So they're in production right now. Um, I looked at the oh, it's also gonna star um Scott Michael Foster, and he was in Return to Office. Right. He was the lead in Return to Office, so that's pretty cool. So it's gonna be good. The two of them at the um the description, the brief description of the book is a 30-year-old woman retraces her gap year through Ireland, France, and Italy to find love and herself. I know it sounds so I mean that sounds like the perfect, you know. That's like passport delay. And you know, we didn't watch, we know that um like holidays was on Hallmark Plus the year before it was actually on the Hallmark Channel, right? And we didn't watch it when it was on Hallmark Plus, but we watched it after that, before it aired on Hallmark Channel, but after it was already on, it had already aired. But I believe they dropped those weekly, yeah. So it will be like a it won't be like all at once. We won't be able to binge it all at once, I don't think. I don't know for sure. I don't know what the schedule's gonna be like.

SPEAKER_00

So we can binge it. That'll be interesting once they release them all.

SPEAKER_04

Like we're gonna be able to wait to watch it if they don't release them all. So we can't uh I know, I know we won't be able to wait. But that's that's very exciting, and how cool to travel. And I mean, I just love the location shoots and everything. So that's pretty cool.

SPEAKER_00

She was in Florida doing a Christmas shoot. Yeah, she was just at Disney World.

SPEAKER_04

Maybe she'll go to Disney Paris, right? She is the queen of all hey, that's pretty cool. Pretty pretty exciting stuff. So go check out her Instagram. You can find out all the news about her travels for this production and the um collection of hers I think she has there. So yeah, great. Just a little bit of a little bit, a little bit of something, something.

SPEAKER_00

There you go.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

All right. So what are we reviewing today?

SPEAKER_04

Today we're going to be reviewing Sugar and Vice, a Hannah Swenson mystery. It originally aired on the Hallmark channel on Saturday, March 7th, 2026, and of course stars Allison Sweeney as Hannah. Victor Webster returns as Chad. Barbara Niven is back as Dolores, her mama. Hannah Mama. Also returning are Juliana Wimbles as Lisa, which is her um works with her in the restaurant, right? Right? Her friend. And Tess Atkins as Michelle Hannah's sister. Yes. Which we haven't seen her yet because we've only seen one other Hannah Swenson mystery. She wasn't in the one. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Well, you know. Sorry, I had to take a sip because I had a little scratchy in my throat.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, a little scratchy, scratchy. Yeah. All right.

SPEAKER_00

So um Sugar and Vice was directed by Peter Benson, who, as a matter of fact, has a cameo in this one, which is funny because I he's playing Cupid. And there's a story. He is.

SPEAKER_04

He is well, he's dressed up as Cupid, right? Right, right. Is that what? Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

That's what I meant. He dresses up as Cupid for the masquerade ball. But Peter has directed a ton of Hallmark movies, and in 2025, he directed four movies, which included three Christmas movies. The More the Merrier, Christmas Above the Clouds, A Royal Montana Christmas, and Return to Office.

SPEAKER_04

He showed up in Christmas Above the Clouds now, didn't he?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, he did.

SPEAKER_04

That would be fun. Yeah, that would be really cool.

SPEAKER_00

I would do that too. If I was a director or a writer, I'd want to do a couple cameos.

SPEAKER_04

Like a couple cameos. I think he was in the more the merrier, also. So yeah.

SPEAKER_00

And guess who wrote this one? Bet you can't guess.

SPEAKER_04

Drumroll. I know. I actually know. Oh my gosh.

SPEAKER_00

Allison Sweeney, who also wrote two other Hannah Swenson movies, Reality Bites and One Bad Apple.

SPEAKER_04

Good for her. That's pretty cool.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. I mean, she's a she wears a lot of hats.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, she does.

SPEAKER_00

She's a boss lady, I'm telling you.

SPEAKER_04

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

So there you have it.

SPEAKER_04

There you have it. So is it time for me to drop the synopsis?

SPEAKER_02

Yes. You're too busy. You're like in your own world tonight.

SPEAKER_04

I don't know what's going on.

SPEAKER_03

I'm just having fun. I'm having fun too.

SPEAKER_04

Hannah. All right, you ready? Hannah finds a body at the grand reopening of the Lake Eden Inn. When a storm traps everyone inside, Hannah must find the culprit before the road clears and the killer escapes.

SPEAKER_00

And this is the part of the podcast where we tell you we're probably gonna drop some spoilers. So if you haven't seen the movie yet, turn the podcast off or pause it. Go watch the movie, come back and press play again and let us know what you think.

SPEAKER_04

Well, we won't give away who the murderer is, right? No, we'll keep that. We'll try to keep that. I I'll try not to accidentally. Keep it under wraps, keep it under wraps.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. All right. So what did you think? Let's just dive right into it.

SPEAKER_04

Let's just dive right in. Well, as I mentioned earlier, we've only seen one other Hannah Swenson mystery, and that was a pie to die for, the one that aired in 2025. So my comparison is to that one only. So um I I really I mean, I enjoyed it.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

You know, I thought it was a good movie. I enjoyed the masquerade ball. I thought it was, I mean, I thought it was well written.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

You know, there were some funny scenes. Um I did not enjoy it as much as a pie to die for just because, you know, Dolores for me, I know in a pie to die for she was way over the top, quirky. I know a lot of people did not like, they thought she was too slapstick, and maybe she wasn't typically like that in other movies. We don't know. Right. But we really enjoyed it. And she was so toned down in this one. Yeah. I was kind of disappointed, you know. I didn't know what I didn't know what to expect, but um, you know, I was kind of expecting her to sort of be that same. So I was a little disappointed in that, but that again could just be because we haven't seen the whole series, so we don't really know. Maybe she's more like she was in this movie in the other movies, you know, still quirky and funny, but not as not quite as over the top, right? Um, as she was in the last one. But I mean, I enjoyed it. What about you?

SPEAKER_00

Um, I enjoyed it. Um, I like to play sugar and vice off of sugar and spice.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, obviously.

SPEAKER_00

And being the sugar and being the vice.

SPEAKER_03

Oh boy, okay, yeah. Oh, I didn't even think about that. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Right. Done.

SPEAKER_03

And okay.

SPEAKER_00

I like the the whole masquerade party. Um, I liked that it was during a thunderstorm, which kind of gave it that murder mystery vibe.

SPEAKER_04

Yes, of course, of course, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Done it.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Um, loved the costumes.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You know.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, they were really good.

SPEAKER_00

The music was pretty good. Um, but there were a couple of things, and we'll talk about it later on in the podcast when we get to those sections. But um, you know, people aren't always who they seem to be.

SPEAKER_03

That is true, that is true.

SPEAKER_00

Everyone has secrets, right?

SPEAKER_04

Everyone.

SPEAKER_00

So I liked it and like you comparing it to the other one. Um, I think they're two different things. She did Dolores did have her moments where I thought she was funny, yeah, but she wasn't as involved, I felt, as the other movie that we watched.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_00

I did like it, so there you go.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So let's get into some favorite scenes.

SPEAKER_04

This is gonna be hard for me. Um, not because not because I didn't enjoy the movie and think it was good. Right. I just think in this particular one, it was harder for me to say, wow, that's the scene that really, you know, there were a lot of um, there were a lot of little moments throughout the movie that I really enjoyed. But like as far as an actual entire scene, I mean it all worked. It I I thought the flow, you know, went really well. I thought the mystery itself was done, you know, pretty well. Um and I just don't know that I have, you know, my favorite scenes honestly involved Dolores and her like one-liner.

SPEAKER_02

So it would be like a quick, you know, she just her quick clip quips, you know, throughout it.

SPEAKER_04

So I don't know that I could pin, you know, pinpoint like for me when Dolores is talking to just the whole dynamic between Dolores and Hannah. Yes, you know, where you know, Hannah had this thing where she didn't want to wear a costume, and I don't know if that's a thing for that character, right? Or not, but she was so adamant about like, no, we're just gonna wear our aprons, you know. And Dolores is like, oh, that's fun. Like, you are a baker, that's not a costume, you know. And I thought so, I guess that would be one scene, you know, where her and her mom are talking. She's kind of Hannah's what moved in with her with Dolores because something's going on in her at her place, right? So her and the cat move in with their mom, and that's when they're talking about the masquerade ball. And of course, Dolores is, you know, in costume to the nines in like a cowgirl costume with a little flapper and like a cowboy hat, and she is raring to go, right? Yeah, and Hannah's like, yeah, I'm not gonna do that, you know. And then Dolores says something about how she has the couple's costume for them. And I thought that that was so I guess I did that scene, was really cute. Yeah, you know, to me. I I enjoyed that scene. I just enjoy their not really banter, but you know, they're kind of they're opposites in a lot of ways, right? So, so I really enjoyed that scene. Um, and then when Dolores at the actual masquerade ball, which by the way, PS second masquerade ball of the year that we've gotten.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. So we've got almost as many months in three months, but yeah, we've gotten a lot of uh ghost, the movie scenes, pottery scenes, and now we're on the masquerade ball.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I'm here for it, maybe.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, but when so when Dolores she's at the masquerade ball, and there's a point where her and Hannah are talking again, and she's like, The your march to the altar reminds me of the tortoise and the hare, except in your case, the tortoise took the scenic route, you know, and I really laughed at that. You know, that was funny, that was so funny, and then she walks off. So those are just a couple of my tidbits. What about you? I know we try to stick to three, but those are I guess.

SPEAKER_00

But there is another one with um with Dolores when when she finds out um that Hannah stumbled again upon a murder. Yes, yes, and she Ron is trying to tell her this and Dolores is she puts her hand over his mouth, like, no, no, yes.

SPEAKER_04

I had I had that in my nose too, where she goes, she covers his mouth and she said, How could she?

SPEAKER_00

You know, she and then it's like a couple a scene or two later, um, she's still talking to Ron, and then Hannah and Lisa are walking by and she calls Hannah, like, come here, you know, like why did you find a murder?

SPEAKER_04

Like, yeah, yeah. Well, does it she says, Really, Hannah? Yeah, like really, yes, nothing, nothing can be done now except to solve another case or whatever. Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm talking about. The banters are really good, you know, between the two of them and and the way she is. And you know, she's upset, but she's also gonna help, you know, Dolores.

SPEAKER_00

It's so funny because you think she's mad at her, and she goes, Yeah, well played, Hannah. Well played. You know, did you do that? And she's like, Yes, and she goes, Well play.

SPEAKER_04

Did you have an I had that one down too? Did you have brothers?

SPEAKER_00

There was another one when um Hannah and Dolores meet Mr. Howe and his wife um at the at the at the party at the masquerade ball. And uh Cheryl, I think that's her name, right? Yeah, I think so. I think so. You know, because Dolores wanted to meet Mr. Howe. And Cheryl goes, oh, the cookie lady. Like, I don't know if it was condescending or you know, or it kind of sounded like it. It kind of sounded like it. And then Dolores, oh my god, she's in mama mode there, right? Yeah, she she goes off on her to talk about she owns a baking company, and you know, I just thought that was a that was uh Barbara Niven is a mama bear moment.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, she's so good in that role, and her face is kind of like yes, that is the cookie lady that she goes into.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, she's so good in that moment.

SPEAKER_00

You know, and then another one with her was when she was interrogating Bobby. She was walking from side to side when Dolores was. I mean when Dolores was it was so funny, and Bobby was just like he was scared every time he turned around. She was on the other side, and he's like, Oh my god, what's going on? But that was another one of my favorite scenes.

SPEAKER_04

Um, two more of mine, so I've mentioned one, and I agreed with you on those. Uh, I always love the the murder board on the fridge scene where they put everything now again in the cookie jar, right? They're in the the murder fridge.

SPEAKER_00

The murder board coining it the murder fridge.

SPEAKER_04

And I know we've said this before, but we got to talk about murder.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_04

There was a murder. And we say it like that because there used to be a TV show called City Confidential.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And um, gosh, I can't think of the narrator's name. That's gonna Paul Winfield. Yes. He was the narrator, and it was based, it was like a um not a documentary, but you know, it was based on a true story. So he would he would start off and he'd be like, it was a small town, it was quiet. The children would play on the streets, people would leave their houses unlocked until there was a murder.

SPEAKER_02

You know, just crack me.

SPEAKER_00

Full confession here. I didn't know about this until you told me, because you used to do that all the time.

SPEAKER_01

And I'm like, why are you doing that?

SPEAKER_00

And you go, Oh my god, we gotta find this. So we went on YouTube TV and looked for it, and you found it. And sure enough, just like how you just said it, is how it went down, and I just just started a laugh.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, so now every time we have to say there was America. So, all right. Yes, anywho, that's just a little sidebar. Yeah, but yeah, so they have the murder board on the fridge, and again, maybe this isn't every movie, but I quite enjoy that. They put everything up there, they have a little discussion, they have their magnets with pictures up and and maps, and they're you know, discussing things. I think that's really cool.

SPEAKER_00

I and they're selling cookies and pies and coffee.

SPEAKER_04

I love it.

SPEAKER_00

People are coming in, yeah, no clue what's going on.

SPEAKER_04

And can we can we can we just before I get to my final favorite scene? Um, when Lisa and Hannah is completely off of that subject, when they're walking in the hotel before they realize there's the murder, right? And Lisa's like, I've never been with you for this part, you know, when Hannah finds then that was really funny too.

SPEAKER_00

That was cute.

SPEAKER_04

I enjoyed that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Um, and then my final my final favorite scene um would be the dance between Hannah and Chad. They do, I don't think they do the they don't do the tango then, right? They just have a they they do a little bit.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, it's a little bit.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, and then Hannah says something like, You remember the dance or dance lessons? Because in the last movie, they have dance lessons with um Zach Santiago, who plays Ramon in the Science Seal Delivered series. So that was kind of a shout-out to him, and you know, since yeah.

SPEAKER_00

But while they were doing that dance, they were looking for sh a clue which was mud on their on the shoes.

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_00

So every time he went, Chad went to dip um Hannah.

SPEAKER_04

Dip Hannah, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

She would look at the shoes. So I thought that was kind of a funny way of looking.

SPEAKER_04

It was good, it was a great way.

SPEAKER_00

Obvious, you know.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah, yeah, it was a great it was it fit right in, right? Right. That was you have any other favorite scenes?

SPEAKER_00

Um no, I think I think that was it for me. I mean, they weren't really favorite scenes, they were just kind of funny and you know, but as far as being my favorites, nah.

SPEAKER_04

Nah. Nah. I like how they're all based on around like a particular sweet treat, like this one with sugar cookies, right? And I think I think the book it was based on was called Sugar Cookie Murder.

SPEAKER_00

Right.

SPEAKER_04

So yeah, I kind of I I love that idea.

SPEAKER_00

Sugar and Vice, huh? Sugar and Vice.

SPEAKER_04

Sugar and Vice. Yes, yes. All right, so no more favorite scenes for you?

SPEAKER_00

Nope, that was it. All right, so biggest cheer um from I just love how she balances her her being a chef, a baker, along with being a murder mystery um person solving these. And it's not really a family business, although they all get involved with it. And I just like how they because for me, I'd be stressed out, right? You know, I got some cakes to bake over here, but yet I got a murder mystery I'm trying to solve. And then she's kind of outdoing the the sheriff Ron in finding these clues, but in the end, they kind of, you know, they kind of they have a mutual understanding and yeah, you know, but that was one of my cheers. What about you?

SPEAKER_04

Um, I would agree with that. I really like, you know, she does, I really like when she's baking and she does the narration kind of over it, and that gives you sort of a sense of what's going on, or you know, it's kind of um in parallel to what's, you know, it it's I I can't think of the right word, like an analogy of what's going on and or what's going to happen. So I kind of think that's really cool. I do, I do overall like the mysteries. I mean, I think, you know, it's just a different type of movie, right? It's not as you're not gonna have the moments like we have. And, you know, we don't truth, truth be told, like you and I, this is the first um mystery series that we've started watching.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

And we haven't watched you know, only the two, because we're not it's not that we don't like them, we just haven't watched them. The past, right? There's a lot of mystery series on Hallmark Plus. We haven't checked those out. Um, we just watched the Nelly Knows mysteries. We watched the first one in preparation for the second one that's coming out. Which PS, by the way, the actor who played Mr. Howe, he is going to be in that movie. And what is his name? He's in a he's in uh in a ton of Hallmark movies. That's gonna bother me.

SPEAKER_00

Uh Tom Stevenson? No, I'm sorry.

SPEAKER_04

No, Paul McGillion. Paul McGillian. Paul McGillian. So he's gonna be in Nellie Knows Mysteries, All Manners of Murder. Oh, yeah. And we watched the first one of that. Totally adorable. Looking forward to the next one. But yeah, but I really I really enjoy it just as a you know, kind of a cool mystery. Incorporate the baking. It is based on the series of books who I was trying to look up the author a little bit ago, but I couldn't find it um real quickly. Yeah. Um, but so I I just kind of like it. I love the band, you know, my biggest cheer is always Hannah and her family, like Hannah and her mom. In the last one, we had a different sister there, right? And they all work together, you know, to solve the mystery. I think I think that's really cool that her mom gets so involved. Right. So just overall the themes of it, I guess, you know. And then of course you have the detective who is, you know, Chad, right? Victor uh Webster. So um it just it just really works. It's just it's just a good mystery to watch. I think it's light, it's fun. I mean, yeah, they're the murder, but you know.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

What do you um what about jeers? Did you have any jeers? Yes. Oh boy, okay.

SPEAKER_00

I have a couple.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, okay. All right. While you do that, I'm gonna try to Hallmark.

SPEAKER_00

Bring some more people to the party, please. I want to see the party, the masquerade party. What did you have? Like 20 people. I want a whole bunch of people, you know.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, you know, I wasn't even paying attention to that part. You know, you want more, you want more costumes. You want to put that costume together.

SPEAKER_00

I want it to look like it's a throwdown, man. People are there. Um, another one. Um I was kind of sad because I was hoping Lisa would be there in the end when Hannah saw of the mystery, but she kind of just dropped off at the end, even though throughout the whole movie she was there at the masquerade party. So I kind of that was kind of a jeer for me because I was like, oh.

SPEAKER_04

You wanted to see more of Lisa.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

But she was in it quite a bit at the beginning, and then she had to kind of keep the crowd keep handing out the cookies to the crowd. Right.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

To see if there was any suspicious behavior. Behavior. Yeah.

SPEAKER_04

Dun dun dun.

SPEAKER_00

So and then my final one is I'm sorry, but there was a scene where Chad and Hannah kind of go down to the lower level of the hotel, and Chad kind of goes, ladies first. And she's like, What? You know, because it's kind of dark and scary, right? Right. But then later on in the movie, Hannah like goes down there like it's no problem. And I'm like, Yeah, no.

SPEAKER_04

Oh, that's right. You're talking about when they go down the stairwell, right? Oh, yes, yes, yes.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, and then she goes down there. And she's all afraid and everything. And I'm like, typical murder movie.

SPEAKER_04

Where she goes by herself.

SPEAKER_00

You know, in real life, you're not going down there, but yet she does.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. And the moment, the moment that she screams, by the way, totally me. I'd freak out. I'd be in one corner. I would not handle that well.

SPEAKER_00

I'm telling you, shadows, shadows will scare you, man. Especially when they're up on the wall, you're like, oh, whoa. And then you turn around and your imagination starts going.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah. You already know there's been a murder. Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

So it's a little freaking. Those were a couple of jeers for me. What about you? Did you have any?

SPEAKER_04

Um, I really didn't have any big jeers.

SPEAKER_00

Okay.

SPEAKER_04

No, I don't think. Um, I I didn't. I didn't have any jeers.

SPEAKER_00

Also, I was the jeer man, didn't you? You were the jeer man this time. Oh my goodness, I feel bad now.

SPEAKER_04

You shouldn't feel badly. That's all right. That's all right. All right.

SPEAKER_00

So out of five quarks, what are you giving sugar and vice?

SPEAKER_04

Sugar and vice, I would give this one a three and a half.

SPEAKER_00

Three and a half.

SPEAKER_04

Three and a half quarks for me. Um, I thought it was a solid movie. I enjoyed the mystery part of it. I never know who's who it's gonna be until the end. Because I'm always like, are they showing us who it is? And I'm just being like, no, that's too obvious, or is it really somebody different? So um, I don't know. Did you guess who it was?

SPEAKER_00

I kind of figured who it was, but I wanted to see it play out.

SPEAKER_04

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Because I didn't feel like any of the other characters were acting guilty or suspicious. You know what I mean?

SPEAKER_04

Right.

SPEAKER_00
