Welcome to Pour the Wine. It's romcom time, where we'll sip some wine and review all things romcom on the Hallmark Channel. I'm Amy.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Gary.
SPEAKER_00Should we just get right to it today?
SPEAKER_01Yes, let's get right to it. Why not?
SPEAKER_00Today we're going to be reviewing Nellie Knows Mysteries, All Manners of Murder. This is the second installment in the series and originally aired on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday, March 14th, 2026. It stars Pascal Hutton as Nellie Parker and Kevin Smith as Michael Hogan. And returning also is Veronica Long as Fiona. And so she is Nellie's co-worker.
SPEAKER_02Co-worker. Co-worker, friend, slash uh her Watson to Sherlock Holmes.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. Although she tried to make um Michael that this time, but yeah, she did. She's like, I'm nobody's Watson.
SPEAKER_01True, true.
SPEAKER_00And you know, we had a really really good cast this time around. Also, we had lots of familiar faces. Crystal Lowe plays Leah. Had no idea she was going to be in it. That was a fantastic surprise.
SPEAKER_02It was.
SPEAKER_00Lori Sultis plays Palmer. Paul McGillion is Hux, and he was just in last week. Sugar and Vice, a Hannah Swenson mystery.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Victoria Dunsmore is Bree, and Gabrielle Rose plays Clara.
SPEAKER_02I know. Such a great cast, right?
SPEAKER_00Yes. Yes.
SPEAKER_02I mean, wow. Well, David I Strasser directed this particular movie. He's directed several Hallmark movies, including the first in this series, A Fatal Engagement, which we watched and enjoyed. The Wish Swap All Need for Christmas. All I need for Christmas. And Coyote Creek Christmas.
SPEAKER_00You were working too hard there. I think your brain was moving faster. It was moving faster.
SPEAKER_02It was like the storm that just blew in and blew out.
SPEAKER_00I know. I know crazy storms today.
SPEAKER_02And Catherine Wagner was the writer on this one. She has one other writing credit, and it's the first in this series, also. A fatal engagement engagement. So that's funny. You got the director and the writer returning. They did both.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Well, it's you can kind of tell the pacing, the writing. I mean, yeah, the directing. It definitely shot the same. It was yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was good. So let's go ahead and drop the synops on this one.
SPEAKER_00Alrighty. Nellie and Detective Michael set out to solve the murder of a guest while at a lavish dinner. You said that. There you go.
SPEAKER_02And we're at that point in the podcast where we'll probably drop some spoilers. So if you haven't watched it yet, you can stop the podcast, go listen to it, come back and let us know what you think, or listen to our podcast and then go watch it.
SPEAKER_00Either way, either way works. Either way works. So let's get into it. What did you think about this one? This one. I want to make you go first.
SPEAKER_02Okay, you're gonna make me f go first. Well, I really like the setup of this particular series.
SPEAKER_00I agree. The series as a whole.
SPEAKER_02As a whole.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02I like how so she works for Balbonton Life, which is a like a column magazine, like a magazine. She does the c a column in the magazine, and people write into it. And it's usually the people where the murder's gonna happen, right?
SPEAKER_00So I it happens to have been the past couple, right?
SPEAKER_02So was the first one? Wait, was the yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, and they wrote into it. I just I I like that premise. I liked the the the banter between um Nelly and Michael. And I I like Fiona as kind of her sidekick in the office. Yeah. She hasn't really been outside of the office helping her with these particular murders, but she does help her inside with the suspect board, which I I find, you know, entertaining. Um, I like how this one was shot inside of a manor, so it kind of gave it that old-time murder mystery, you know. All we needed was a kind of a storm. That would have been good too, right? But we had that in the last movie that we reviewed. Yes, we did. Um, I enjoyed the you know, the secret rooms, the the side plots that were going on, the secrets that the other characters were hiding. Um I I I enjoyed this one.
SPEAKER_00Like each family member had something going on with someone. Yeah, I I um I would totally agree with everything you said. And we recently watched a fatal engagement. We didn't watch it when it first aired, but we recently watched it in anticipation of this one dropping. So, and it was, and we loved the first one. Really, really loved the first one. I mean, it's just a fun mystery, and it really kept me guessing. Now, I know I always say I never know anyway, but really this time I was like, I don't know. I mean, did you figure that this one out? Because last time you said you not in fatal engagement, but in sugar and vice, you kind of had an idea, and I guess a lot of people were the killer was. I'm just not that smart.
SPEAKER_02This one it took a little bit longer, but yeah, I kind of figured who it was and why he was doing it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00It was well, I won't say who it was. Never mind. You suspected who it was.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but it was more entertaining. You had more suspects.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes.
SPEAKER_02And they really, you know, i i if you're somebody who's just now getting into the murder mystery genre, you know, this was a fun little, you know.
SPEAKER_00Well, we've only, you know, mistletoe murders we love.
SPEAKER_02Oh, well, that's and we've only seen two Hannah Swenson.
SPEAKER_00So we're not exactly mystery experts on the Hollywood channels.
SPEAKER_02So no, but yeah, but this is something we like.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah. But this is definitely something. I mean, I love that we have one character that grew up there, lives there, knows everybody or knows of them if she doesn't know them. And then you have, you know, the new detective in town. I like the premise of that. So, and like you mentioned, I'm really enjoying their sidekicks, so to speak. So you have Fiona, who is Nellie's, you know, friend and co-worker, and then you have the sheriff um Burgie. Is that what he calls her? Burgie? Yeah, Burgie. I can't. And um, so she's she's Burgie. She's you know, sort of the sidekick to Michael's. She's the sheriff who is the sidekick to his, you know, detective character. So I really like them. I love that we got to see so many familiar faces in this one. It was just a really great supporting cast. And like you said, just a really, I thought it was a fun, enjoyable mystery. And, you know, Nellie was toned down in this one from the first one. I really enjoyed her in the first one. Her character is kind of over the top at times, but um, I guess a lot of people didn't like that too much. But so she was the same, but toned down in this one. So, and I think, you know, her and um, you know, Pascal and Kevin, they have such great chemistry anyway. You know, the calls the heart, and they've been another, so their chemistry is great. And I also love that they are diving right into the relationship. There's not this long drawn out, there's not this will they, won't they? It's just like, hey, they're adults, it's moving forward in what would be normal life, right? You like somebody, you ask them out on a date, maybe a murder happens in this case, maybe not, you know. So, um, you know, and I just I kind of like that they're moving forward with that in a more um natural way instead of waiting and oh, he really likes me, what, you know, so or she really likes me, what are you talking about? I had no idea, you know. So I just I like the the evolution of their relationship in this one too. So we're kind of getting more of that. So I I really I enjoyed this one.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and and the the pacing of the movie, yeah, and of the you know, the the clues that they dropped, yeah, you know, was for me was was spot on.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I I totally agree. And it was and it's interesting because we have this one immediately after Sugar and Vice, the Hannah Swenson, which was more sort of monotone for lack of a better term. You know, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't like really great. We just really dove into it, loved it. So this one definitely gave us more.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It held my it grabbed my attention. And I actually was trying to figure out where where they were dropping the clues throughout the whole movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, where you yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Because you had so many, like I said, so many of those side stories going on between the the family members and the non-family members, yeah. Um, so yeah, it it it held my attention for the whole movie.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I agree.
SPEAKER_02So you want to jump into some cheers, what what or some favorite scenes?
SPEAKER_00What you want to do a little, I mean it's a little bit harder, I think, with favorite scenes with mysteries, yeah. Just because um of the nature of the storytelling, I think.
SPEAKER_02Okay. But you know, I did have a couple.
SPEAKER_00Did you have a couple?
SPEAKER_02I had some some favorite moments.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. They're more like, yeah. So uh one of mine would be um when Nellie gets invited to the dinner party at the manor, which the house looks like the house on the TV series Ghosts, by the way. Just gonna say a little bit, a little bit. If you haven't watched the TV series ghosts, which is really good and we love and adore, it's really fun. Um, but anyhow, so she invites him as her plus one, and he's kind of like, Are you asking me out on a date? You know, and he's it's cute because again, I love that they like he's not over the top, but he is kind of like excited. Yes, you know, he's like, Am I meeting family? Or, you know, and she's like, No, it's you were going to like a dinner party. It just was really cute and natural.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So I I like that scene. What about you? What's one do you think?
SPEAKER_02I had that one too because I thought it was so funny how she she was like, Do you want to be my plus one? And he was just so giddy about it that yeah, you know, that and and later on there's a scene where she brings that back up and says, Oh, you were so excited when I asked you. Yeah, so yeah, but um when they actually do get to the uh the the mansion or the manor, and they're getting out of the car, and this is when we first see uh Crystal Lowe, right? Oh yes, yes, and he like ducks down, Michael ducks down, because it's not until a little bit later that you find out that that she's his ex-wife. Right. He just ducked down and Nelly's like, what are you doing? He's like, I'm tying my shoe.
SPEAKER_00I'm fine.
SPEAKER_02And you know, and and that's what I love about uh Nelly's character is she she's kind of quirky, but she's not stupid, right? She's very anal analytic, or she's very she's analyzing everything analytical, and she's listening and she's watching, and and he's like, Oh, I'm just tying my shoe. She's like, Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_00And I love, you know, with Nelly too, it's part of her character. Like she's like she doesn't think, I mean, she kind of notices that there's another woman there and he acts that way, so she kind of notices something is off, but she's also just got this positive attitude, right? Which she explains in the first um in the first movie, right? Because he's like, Are you always this positive? And I I love that they've made her character like that, and it is a choice for that character because of what's happened in her life.
SPEAKER_02Right. Right.
SPEAKER_00So she just chooses to be optimistic and positive. So yeah. Yeah, that was that was a great, it was a funny scene.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was. It was great.
SPEAKER_00I really liked when so the murder happens, and Nellie and Michael are s are in the uh in the room and they're discussing reenactments, right? Of who possibly could have done it because they're the the murder happens in a room and she had gone to a dinner and it and it's all family members, and one of the family members is talking about how she changed her will, that's why she had the dinner. So, and that's Palmer. And so they go into like the drawing room or whatever they call it, I don't know. And they're all in there, and that's where the murder happens. So after everyone leaves the room, it's just Michael and I don't think any police are in there at that time. I think it's just Michael and Nellie, and they're doing reenactments of like, okay, so she's like, okay, so if you know, if Hucks did it, he would have an opportunity because he would be over here and he would shoot here. But if Bree did it, and he's basically like, Thank you for keeping our options wide open, you know, and not narrowing it down. I thought that was such a cute scene because she's working through it, and at first they have a really good idea, and then she works through like how everyone had an opportunity to do it during the dinner, and he's like, Great.
SPEAKER_02And he was just he was just focused on on Brie at that particular moment. And she was like, Oh no, it could have been all right Oh, is that okay?
SPEAKER_00So that's who they were focused on in that moment.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I thought that that was Did you notice how he was centered in between the drapes?
SPEAKER_00You noticed that and brought my attention.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how to it was like the drapes went like this, and he was he had his hands on the couch and it looked exactly he like was outlined by the drapes.
SPEAKER_00And for those of you that can't see and are listening to us and now and not watching us, the drapes were I don't even know how to just kind of like this and kind of went down like that.
SPEAKER_02Like an upside down yeah, and he was centered right in between. And he was centered right in the middle of it. Yeah, when the drapes went down. I just thought that was interesting. I don't know if that was on purpose, but it had to be because he was perfectly centered. Had to be, had to be. So that but that was that was pretty interesting. But um, another one of mine is when when when Michael does ask Nellie to help, he says, Yes, do you want to consult? And she's like all excited and everything. And she says, Oh, are you depotizing me? He goes, No, I said consulting. And she goes, You know, Sherlock Holmes was consulting too.
SPEAKER_00And is that when she says, You're my Watson?
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00And he and he's like, I'm nobody's Watson. I thought that was so cute.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was a really, really cute. Yeah, that was really cute. I had that as one also.
SPEAKER_00Yep, yep. And then go ahead.
SPEAKER_02No, go ahead.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, I was just gonna say for me, uh, you have another one, I guess. But for me, it's just I just enjoyed the mystery as it went along. So I kind of just pointed out my favorite moments, you know. But what did you have another one?
SPEAKER_02I had one more, and that's when she was back at the the um the uh her job, the Babbleton life. And she's sitting there with Fiona and she's talking about the case, and and Fiona, yes, yes, yes. She goes, Do you want to build a suspect board? And the look on Nellie's face was like, Yes.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I forgot about that. I had that as one of my yep, yep, yep.
SPEAKER_02And then she's handing her picture. And then Fiona's handing her pictures, right? Like photographs, and then she hands the butler, and it's a it's like a stick figure drawing, and and Nelly's like, What? And she's like, Well, he doesn't have a uh an online presence, an online presence, so this is what we have, and then she hands her a picture of Nelly and of Michael, and she goes, Well, we didn't do it. She goes, You were there at the party.
SPEAKER_00You're going on the board, you're going on the board.
SPEAKER_02So that was a that was another cute scene that I've got.
SPEAKER_00That was that was really cute, yeah. And I love how she calls it a suspect board where we're like, it's a murder board. It's a murder board. Yes.
SPEAKER_02So And we have that.
SPEAKER_00We play the game Hunt to Killer, and we're very good detectives. Yeah, yeah, yeah. We also have a murder board for that.
SPEAKER_02The thing that gets me on the on those games are the ciphers, man, because there's so many different types of ciphers. So if you're not familiar with the game, you you start.
SPEAKER_00They can be really hard. I know we just sidetracked a little bit, but Hun to Killer has some really great games out there. And it's a lot of reading, it's a lot of note-taking, but we really enjoy that. And I have found out that I probably would not be a good detective after we do those, but they are really fun, and a lot of times they involve online things. You can look stuff up, and they have certain websites that are specific to the game that you're playing, and it's kind of cool because they'll have photos on there or what maps of you know, drawings of where they are, and so and just different clues. And so it it's really fun. It's really fun. We're into it.
SPEAKER_02And if you get stuck, they have little hints that you can look at that can help you.
SPEAKER_00If you feel like you're stuck, so and they have ciphers, which are not always easy, yeah. But yeah. All right, anywho, that was just a sidetrack. Sorry. Okay, so was that it for you for favorite scenes?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was it for me.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, there was there was a couple more, but you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. All right, so what about cheers? What do you have for cheers?
SPEAKER_02Like you said, I like how the relationship is moving along and uh we don't have to wait a season, two seasons, three seasons for them to actually like, you know, actually go out on a date, which I find go ahead.
SPEAKER_00No, I was just gonna say they didn't hate each other at first, you know, which is nice.
SPEAKER_02And I just find it kind of funny on this episode, they tried to go on a couple of dates, but every time they went on the date, something happened, so it really didn't end up being a date. And I just thought that was cute. But I I I really liked how you know they they brought them together and you know, and it just it seemed real. It seemed like, you know, yeah, they could really date.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02You know, so any other cheers for um I just I love the I I love how they bring them the the murder in with through the column. I I really enjoy that.
SPEAKER_00Oh yeah, through her column. Because she's kind of like a dear Abbey, right? Yeah, she's she's like a dear Abby of that kind of.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, well, it's an advice on that one.
SPEAKER_00It's an advice column, right? Isn't that what she kind of yeah exactly? Yeah, yeah. What about you? I'm with you. I just enjoy the concept of the show, the concept of how the mystery is set up. I think the storytelling is done really well. So the writer is is really good. I mean, I don't think I guessed the other one either in a fatal engagement. And I just I just like the way the story flows, and that has a lot to do with the writing and the directing and the shots. And I think it is very natural. And you mentioned about their relationship, and I talked about that at the beginning. I think that's another strong cheer from me. I love in this one that they had the little bell ringing for the butler and it reminded me of Downton Avenue. I was like, is that really a thing? Where they have the bell in like the kitchen or whatever. So I really loved seeing Crystal Lowe, you know, we're we're um deep in the canon of Science Seal Delivered. We'd never watched it. We're watching them in order and reviewing them, and um, you know, and she her character is so fantastic in that, but it is completely different, obviously, than other characters that she plays. And she's so good in this one. She is, and you know, she's really, really just so good and natural.
SPEAKER_02And this, and she was part of one of the side stories too.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, one of the twists. So, yeah, I mean, right, not just the cater, she was the caterer, but then she it ends up being more involved than what you originally know or think.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, right.
SPEAKER_00And I honestly wasn't without giving it away, like I wasn't expecting or I wasn't suspecting her involvement as it was, even though I guess there might have been clues.
SPEAKER_02Right.
SPEAKER_00But you know, I just didn't, I was like, Oh, okay, that's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah, I picked up on a couple of those clues with her.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. And you know, I really another cheer from me, other than you know, just uh thoroughly enjoying it. Um, I really liked, I think it might have been towards the beginning because it sort of picks up at the end of the last one where Nellie and and Michael, you know, they kind of have, you know, they're kind of flirting with each other. They know they like each other or whatever. And um, and Michael's talking to the sheriff, and Nellie is talking to Fiona and they're talking about the other one. Right, right. Right, like at the same time. I thought that that was really cute, also. I think I think that was towards the beginning. Yeah, it was where it's kind of like, Oh, are you going on a date? You know, so yeah, I like that, but just cheers all around about the storytelling, um, the directing, the shots. Like you said, I loved that it. Was shot in a manner, you know, and you did have a murder, and you really, you know, you didn't know. I I thought the reveal of how the murder happened was cool.
SPEAKER_02Yes.
SPEAKER_00I I thought that that was a very cool way to murder something. Not that I'm pro, you know, murdering somebody, of course, but you know, if you're gonna do it in a murder mystery, I thought, so I just, you know, I don't know if all of Hallmark mysteries are kind of light and fun like this. But and I love, you know, the way Pascal plays that character when she's like, oh, I know, you know, she gets all. And I just love that. So I I love her and that character, and Kevin, you know, he's so good too because he's not over the top happy, but he's just, you know, his emotions are real, you know, and effortless. So I just I love that about those two.
SPEAKER_02So and yeah, my my I guess my last year would be I love how she there's a scene where her grandmother is walking with some neighborhood people, and they're kind of like speed walking.
SPEAKER_00Is that her that's her grandmother?
SPEAKER_02I but I believe so.
SPEAKER_00She calls her I think she calls her grandmother or a grand or something. Yeah, oh.
SPEAKER_02And she's sitting there walking with them and getting information about the um Arlot, you know, family history. And then when she gets what she needs, she kind of just stops and has that moment and everybody walks past her. And then she goes back. Is that what she goes back to? She turns around and runs back and she's like, oh, I got some clues, yay. And I I just like how they do that, you know.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's really um it's really good. I'd love to say one thing, but I don't want to give it away. I don't want to give away who the You don't want to give away the murder. I don't, I don't want to give away the murder.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, yeah, I mean, because it was uh there was a you know, I think I came up with like almost 10 clues that they dropped.
SPEAKER_00Oh, you did?
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Oh, good for you. I wasn't paying that close of attention, but that's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so but anyways, do you have any more cheers?
SPEAKER_00Um, no. We're I think we're good. I think I covered them.
SPEAKER_02What about jeers? Did you have any jeers?
SPEAKER_00I didn't.
SPEAKER_02No.
SPEAKER_00I I didn't um I'm trying to think if I had anything. I I didn't have any jeers, nothing that I noticed. Um, you know, like I said, um it's hard for me to tell who it is anyway, so it's not like I would notice something obvious. Um what about you? Did you notice any or have any jeers?
SPEAKER_02No, but the one thing I did forget to mention is I I didn't have any jeers, but I I loved how, you know, in this particular one, uh Crystal Lowe, who plays Leah, the the caterer, is Michael's ex-wife, and I like how they didn't make Nellie upset or jealous about it. She was very positive, and she said, you know, you you have some things to figure out. And in the end, he did, and I like that last scene where you know she he had put a card on her her card door handle.
SPEAKER_00I'm glad you brought that up.
SPEAKER_02And I just thought that was so, so good. Because you know, you always get that hallmark moment where here's why they're mad, but she wasn't. She she they didn't make her mad, she was very understanding, and you know, so and I think she was trying to figure out sort of where they stood with each other, too.
SPEAKER_00Right, you know, and yeah, you're right, they didn't make her bitter or and they didn't make Crystal Lowe or Kevin, you know, they didn't make Leah or Michael mad at each other or have some kind of contentious or we don't get along. It was just that's his ex, and then you kind of find out more information right by the end of the movie about why they got divorced, yeah, why they got divorced, and um yeah, I thought they handled that really well and more like real life. Yeah. I mean, not everybody gets along, believe me, we know, but you know, but it's just there are adults in the room, right? In that particular case. So sometimes you can't help it, but in that case, I did I did like that you didn't have the stereotypical trope of oh, that's his ex and you know, she's a big old beach, you know, or something like that. It wasn't like that, you know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. So I agree with you. So out of five corks, how many would you give this one?
SPEAKER_00Are we going to ranking? I would give it a I'd give it a four and a half. I really enjoyed this one.
SPEAKER_02Man, we are on the same samers. Are you gonna give it the same?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, four and a half corks this time, yes. It was just, I just found it so enjoyable from start to finish. I really enjoy the characters. Um, like I said, I know they toned down Nellie, and that was fine for me because I still enjoyed it. You know, like you said, I just the sidekicks I liked. I loved the cast that we got in this one, the supporting cast. I love the story. Family, you never know what's going on, you know, behind closed doors. And, you know, they as they start to um try to solve the the murder, you know, they're unraveling like peeling an onion back, right? And you find out all these layers of the family and and the relationships between everybody. And I thought that was done really well. And in the short period of time they had, right? You know, you really got to know the characters in that short period of time, even like the half sibling and whatnot. So I I just thought it was done, it was done really well. That's what I thought. And so, yeah, four and a half from me.
SPEAKER_02Okay, and uh, and that's what I gave it. And basically for the same reasons, um, I I enjoyed um Fiona as you know, a side character.
SPEAKER_00I'm glad I want to see her more. I hope we get more of her in the next one, and I hope there is a next one.
SPEAKER_02I I would like to see her actually go out on one of the the, you know, to solve a mystery with her.
SPEAKER_00I think that would be kind of cool, but you know, it just well, she might have been kind of like in that other police officer.
SPEAKER_02I know she might be something there. So hopefully we're getting more of that. I can't remember what camp they went to high school together, right? Or no, it was some camp that they spend all summer with. Okay. And she was like, ooh, he's looking good.
SPEAKER_00Ooh.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02And uh Nelly was like, Well, go talk to him. So, all right. So, is that a wrap?
SPEAKER_00That's a wrap.
SPEAKER_02Well, thanks for listening. And the best way to support our podcast is to tell family and friends that they can listen to us on their favorite podcast platform, and you can also help us or help other Hallmark fans find us by rating us on Apple, Spotify, or YouTube. And why not bring a little Hallmark to someone's day?
SPEAKER_00Aw, yeah, definitely bring Hallmark to Someone's Day. Yeah. A lot of Hallmark to Someone's Day. How about that? You can also send us an email to pour the wine. It's romcomtime at gmail.com and let us know your thoughts about this second installment in the um Nelly knows mysteries series or anything hallmark related. We would love to hear from you. Yes, we do. Be sure to follow us wherever you get your podcasts and on social media so you don't miss a thing. Till next time. Cheers.
