Welcome And Hallmark News
SPEAKER_00Welcome to Pour the Wine. It's rom cum time where we'll sip some wine and review all things rom cum on the Homework Channel. I'm Amy.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Gary.
SPEAKER_00And we have a little bit of homework news.
SPEAKER_01Yes, we do.
SPEAKER_00Yes, we do.
SPEAKER_01You want to tell folks what it is?
SPEAKER_00I will. I will dive right into it. Lacey Chabert recently posted a video. Um, she is in the middle of shooting Paris is always a good idea. And they have, and it is based on the book by Jen McKinley. I should throw that in there. And they have left Paris and they are now shooting in Spain, and they are on week nine of production.
SPEAKER_01Man, that is crazy.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01She's going traveling all over Europe, huh?
SPEAKER_00I know it's pretty cool. And she she mentioned that they're gonna be, you know, when they wrap up, we're gonna be seeing it soon. And I'm doing air quotes if you're listening and not watching. Um, so I don't know what that means. June, August, hopefully.
SPEAKER_01Could be.
SPEAKER_00Maybe not July. Yeah. I hope so too.
SPEAKER_01Well, if it's June, that's a really quick turnaround.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01In post-production, because oh my goodness, man.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah. So it's it's it's gonna be really interesting to see when that when that drops. And I know you know we're excited about it. I know a lot of people are excited about it. A lot of people are reading the book. I have the book. I need to dive in. I do need to re I do want to read it before it airs. So so we'll see. That's pretty exciting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm excited about it. So you ready to dive in?
SPEAKER_00I am today. We're going to preview the five movies that are coming in May of 2026. May for moms.
SPEAKER_01May for moms. Cheers, moms.
SPEAKER_00Cheers. Cheers. You gotta you can't cheers with your anything other than iced tea. What was that?
SPEAKER_01Sweet iced tea. Cheers for the moms.
SPEAKER_00There you go. You lifted up your other drink. I'm like, whoa, whoa.
SPEAKER_01It was in my hand. Sorry, I apologize.
SPEAKER_00But what's interesting is we have we have two two movies that are, you know, the rom coms, and then we have three mysteries.
SPEAKER_01That is crazy.
SPEAKER_00What are we doing? Is it about moms? Is it not about moms? Are only the first two movies mom-ish, mom adjacent?
SPEAKER_01What are we doing? I don't know. Is that what we did for April? Isn't that what we did? It was like two mysteries and then Yeah, we had like spring in the spring into love.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Threw in a few mystery-ish type movies, maybe. Yeah, I don't know. Ish, ish. All right, so let's dive in.
Kentucky Roses And Derby Romance
SPEAKER_01Okay, let's do it.
SPEAKER_00Kentucky Roses is going to premiere on Saturday, May 2nd. And this one stars Odette, Annabelle, and Andrew Walker. Okay. And this is Odette's Hallmark debut.
SPEAKER_01Awesome, man.
SPEAKER_00Which is pretty exciting. Now we do have, I have to say, we have, because we are recording this closer to the air dates, um, we have more information about a couple of the movies, and a few of the movies we we have less information. So, and it's just the nature of, you know, what's available now and what's out there. And some of them, there's not a lot available. So, you know, we're just gonna kind of go with what we know and what we looked up and researched, right?
SPEAKER_01We're just throwing caution to the wind.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. So this one is was directed by Claire Niederproem, and she has several homework directing credits, including a Grand Old Opry Christmas, Villa Amori, The Royal Wee, and A Royal Corgi Christmas. And speaking of a royal Corgi Christmas, our friends Rich and Renee over at Forever Homework Christmas Podcast recently reviewed that movie and we did listen to it. So if you haven't checked them out, they review Christmas movies only. Yep, they are dropping new um episodes every Thursday, and we really enjoy listening to them, especially. And that was that was kind of a fun one to listen to, the Royal Corgi Christmas.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, their review.
SPEAKER_00So go check them out. They're great. Go follow them, go go listen to their podcast.
SPEAKER_01Somebody's a big dog fan.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah. A Corgi fan. Yeah. Just add a little tinsel to your day. Don't we all need that? And they're doing it every week. They're dropping a new a new Christmas movie, Get Yourself in the Spirit, even if it's almost May.
SPEAKER_01Well, Christmas in July is coming.
SPEAKER_00Yep, yep, right around the corner. All right. So the synopsis of Kentucky Roses is a greenhouse worker and the son of Churchill Downs CEO form an unlikely pair coming together to save the Kentucky Derby rose blanket and uncovering a generational love story along the way.
SPEAKER_01Man.
SPEAKER_00Woo!
SPEAKER_01So Kentucky Derby.
SPEAKER_00What do you think? So this is the first time Churchill Downs is collaborating with Hallmark.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_00And I did listen to um Dara of Dear Hallmark. Go listen to her podcast. She has a great podcast also. She interviewed Andrew Walker, and it's a really, really good interview with, you know, between her and Andrew. And I won't, I won't give too many things away because I do want you to go listen to it because he does, there's a lot of information about this movie, you know, behind the scenes type of things. But he did say, and I found it interesting, that his best friend, her cousin, is the CEO of Churchill Downs.
SPEAKER_01That is crazy.
SPEAKER_00Isn't that crazy? And so the CEO of Churchill Downs decided to ask his cousin, like, hey, you know that guy that's in those movies on Hallmark? Do you think they'd be interested in the collab? And she called Andrew, and Andrew called Hallmark, and here we are with the movie.
SPEAKER_01There you go.
SPEAKER_00That's the shortened version. Go listen to Dear Hallmark's um interview with him. It it's really good. And I just I thought that was so cool. What a great connection.
SPEAKER_01That is cool. Can you imagine having connections like that?
SPEAKER_00Oh, I thought that. Are you kidding me?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Especially especially in sports.
SPEAKER_00So what do you think? What do you what do you think about the synopsis? What do you think?
SPEAKER_01This is one of the ones I'm really looking forward to because who doesn't like horses, hat parties, you know, there is I mean, it's a big deal. This is like the Super Bowl, right? For for uh Yeah, it's a sport.
SPEAKER_00I mean, it's a big sporting event. And you know, I I went to college in Kentucky and um one of my classes, I was in an animal psychology class, excuse me. And um we uh we got to go to, I think the name is escaping me a little bit now. I I believe it's called Clareborne, Clareborne Farm in Kentucky. And if I'm wrong, somebody will tell me. But it is where uh secretariat is buried, and it's where they do a lot of breeding. Um I don't I can't remember the proper terms, but it had to do with animal psychology when we went, but it was really cool. And I have a lot of friends that, you know, go to the derby. Um I've never been myself. It would be very cool to go. I have passed by it, you know, I've driven by it, you know, Churchill Downs. But there's so much history there. And I think this movie, I'm I'm just really I I think it's gonna be really good. And I I did forget to mention that Jamie Pacino is the writer. And she's written several other Hallmark movies, Long Lost Christmas, The Secrets of Bella Vista, Five More Minutes, and the 12th Date of Christmas, right? Which we just talked about. Um so I, you know, I think, and she worked a lot with Andrew, and they talked to a lot of people at Churchill Downs, and they got a lot of the history. And so I, and it's supposed to be sort of a um, there's gonna be two timelines, like 1932 and the present. And you know, we're all about we're all about that.
SPEAKER_01That period time period, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we're about those period pieces. So I'm really excited about this one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, me too. Yeah, I can't wait.
SPEAKER_00I think it's gonna be good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so that's the first one.
SPEAKER_00That's the first one.
SPEAKER_01The second one for May for Moms is called All's Fair and Love and Mahjong, which premieres Saturday, Mahjong, which premieres Saturday, May 9th. It stars Fiona Goobelman, Paul Campbell, Jean K. Crystal Lowe, Tamara Morey Housley, and Melissa Peterman. Now that's a cast, right?
SPEAKER_00That's a cast. That's a great cast.
SPEAKER_01I can't find any directors or writers available yet, but when we do, we'll put them in the comments. How about that?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. When we do the uh review, we'll have them.
SPEAKER_01There you go. The synopsis for this movie is a school nurse finds unexpected hope through teaching mahjong, the centuries-old Japanese game art Chinese Chinese game, Chinese game, yes, which kind of reminds me of Domino's, but you know But it's not, but it's not. Yeah, which helps her build community and open her heart again. Because for some reason, and this is a Hallmark movie, her heart has been closed.
SPEAKER_00Her heart has been closed.
SPEAKER_01So what do you think about this one?
SPEAKER_00Um, you know, when we first when we first saw some of the the um the promos, not not trailers, but um the the posters, the pictures when the you know, when when Fiona and Paul started when people started posting about it, and I was kind of like, oh wow, that seems really cool. And then, but I just didn't think about it, but there's been a lot of controversy, a lot of controversy lately because of representation or the lack thereof, I should say. Right? The the the lack of representation of the Asian culture, Asian actors. So um, you know, I mentioned Dear Hallmark. She does discuss that in one of her recent podcast episodes. She talks about the controversy. Her her her discussion about it is really worth listening to, I think. Um which which, you know, and and she sort of says maybe this is the wake-up call that excuse me, Hallmark needs to see that people are craving that. They're they're craving more inclusivity and their, you know, more representation in their movies. So I don't know. I mean, we're gonna watch it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm I'm ready to to sit down and watch it with a glass of wine.
SPEAKER_00Yes, yes. Um, also, I should say there's another Instagram account, and she's really great. Her account is called Here for the Feels. And um Casey and she she wrote um, I don't want to give I don't know her heritage totally. She's she's an Asian American, but she she wrote something on Substack and her article, and I encourage you to go read it also because it's really it's it's it made me think too what she wrote. I I read it, it's so well written, and the points that she brings up are um are valid, and I I just think people should read it. I I think it's a good perspective also.
SPEAKER_01Right. I agree.
SPEAKER_00What do you think about all the controversy?
SPEAKER_01Well, you know, I I think, you know, I'm a type of person that believes in everybody, you know, no matter what. And I feel like we all have, we all enjoy the same type of things. We all, you know, we see a lot of movies, and it's you know, you have one culture, it's always about history or something like that, instead of truly family life or what's going on. And then over here, you have the family life going on. And I I just feel like let's be true, let's be real. Um, just like you have consultants on set when you're doing specific things, won't you bring somebody in to really tell you the family culture and how they the historical aspect of it and so what you can show and what you can represent more accurately. Right. Because uh we watch all types of of movies. The the only thing I have a problem with is subtitles in close. Well, yeah, no matter what the I can't, I'm not a speed reader and it's hard for me, it's hard to stay up with it. But I I enjoy all types of movies. So I'm I'm looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_00You know, and I think it and hopefully, like Dara from Dear Hallmark says, hopefully it is a wake-up call, you know, to to Hallmark. And there's no reason why the leads couldn't have been they could find two Asian actors. It's not like they don't exist, you know. Now we love, I mean, it's a great cast. I mean, we love the cast, obviously. Um but perhaps, and I I think they were saying um Yankee Crystal Lowe is um Chinese also. Yeah. Is that right? Did we hear that in one of the I I hope I didn't misrepresent that, but you know, you can do more.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean you know, so yeah. Yeah, it's it's gonna be interesting. I mean, we're gonna watch it, we're gonna see, you know, we'll we'll see how it goes. I mean, I mean, I think the story sounds good, but now with all the controversy, it did make me think and uh just like tainted. Yeah, well, no, it's not tainted. It just, yeah, it's gonna we're gonna see. We're gonna find out how it's represented and go from there.
Hannah Swensen Returns To The Bakery
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we sure will. Yep. All right, so what's our next movie?
SPEAKER_00All right, our next movie is Best Served Cold, a Hannah Swenson mystery. It premieres Saturday, May 16th. And of course, the Hannah Swenson mysteries star Allison Sweeney, Barbara Niven, and Victor Webster. Now, uh, no director or writer listed yet on IMDB, but I think didn't Allison write the last one?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00That we watched. I think. Yeah. Um, okay, here's the synopsis. When a suspect in a forgery case is murdered and the prosecutor goes missing, Hannah and Chad must uncover how the two cases are connected and solve them in time for the trial. Dun dun dun.
SPEAKER_01Well, this one's gonna be interesting.
SPEAKER_00What do you think?
SPEAKER_01Um I don't know. Uh um I'm looking forward to it. I hope there's more scenes in the bakery shop. You know, I enjoy those little talks and I love the the refrigerator murder board.
SPEAKER_00Yes, that's that's always fun.
SPEAKER_01I always like to see how they incorporate the refrigerator into each murder and what they stick up on the refrigerator. So um I don't know. I think I'm gonna I I think this would be a pretty good one.
SPEAKER_00I hope so. I mean, our first Hannah Swenson movie ever was A Pie to Die For, and we loved that. We thought that was really great and fun. And apparently a lot of diehard Hannah Swenson people really didn't like Barb Barbara Niven's character because it was too over the top, but we found it to be light and fun and you know, and all that. And then the last one that just aired Sugar and Vice, we thought kind of fell flat. And actually, a lot of people felt that way about it. It just it was sort of okay. It wasn't great, it wasn't terrible, but it was just sort of okay. So we'll see. I mean, we we've only seen this will only be our third Hannah Swenson. So, you know, the jury's still out.
SPEAKER_01Well, it was very predictable, and you kind of figured out who did it right off the bat almost.
SPEAKER_00Well, you did.
SPEAKER_01I'm just you know, and you know, you like a good mystery. You like to get at least halfway through before you can before you kind of have an idea of who who did it. So yeah, but this one was like, yeah, he did.
True Justice And Parent Politics
SPEAKER_00Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_01All right, so the next movie is True Justice 2, Eye for an Eye, which premieres Saturday, May 23rd. Right. And this one stars Catherine McNamara, Markian I think it's McNamara. Or McNamara, I'm sorry. And I'm not sure if I can pronounce this right, but Markian uh Tare Siouk. I hope that's correct. If not, I apologize. Uh Nikki Deluch and Benjamin Ayres. It's directed by Lisa Sauper. This is Lisa's debut for Hallmark. She's also directs, she'll also direct the next one, right? True Justice 3, Lost Love. No release date yet. So for that one.
SPEAKER_00Hang on for that. No release date yet. Yep. Hank too.
SPEAKER_01Um, she's also directed two episodes of Ripple, which was a really good series. We enjoyed that one. Um, going on to Hallmark, but ended up, it was supposed to go on Hallmark, but it ended up on Netflix, which is right. I mean, it was good. I enjoyed that.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we really enjoyed that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we should have reviewed it.
SPEAKER_00Ian Harding. Yes. We still can. No one says we can.
SPEAKER_01She has been on the production designer um a few times on Hallmark Films, Catch Me A Few Claws, and Christmas Festival of Ice. She was also the production designer on Hot Frosty.
SPEAKER_00Which was Lacey Shaber, right? That one was on Netflix also, right? Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yep. And Eye for an Eye was written by Nikki Deluche. DeLuch and Megan McNulty. Of course, Nikki has a ton of Hallmark movies under her belt as an actress. This is her fifth writing credit. Nikki and Megan have four previous writing credits, which includes Two for Hallmark, Christmas for Keeps, and The First True Justice, Family Ties. In addition to I, uh Eye for an I.
SPEAKER_00No, eye to I.
SPEAKER_01Eye to I, I'm sorry. Um, they also wrote.
SPEAKER_00Oh no, it's I for an eye. I'm sorry. You were right. Oh my gosh, we got to mark this down on the calendar. You were right and I was wrong.
SPEAKER_01Oh, hold on. It's being recorded, so there you go. It's being recorded. I don't even have to record it.
SPEAKER_00It's on video and audio, darn it.
SPEAKER_01Right. And this one is the true justice three, which is lost love. Um, the synopsis for this one. Um, amateur sluiths tackle a fresh challenge at a local school, diving into the fierce world of apparent politics.
SPEAKER_00Oh, those are too cool.
SPEAKER_01I know. I know they are. Their investigation uncovers hidden agendas and unexpected alliances as they navigate the complex web with the community. Now we've never seen this. Actually, I've never even heard of it. So I'm kind of intrigued.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I am too. Maybe we should watch True Justice. What was the first one called? Something family.
SPEAKER_01Oh.
SPEAKER_00Um I don't know. Um family ties.
SPEAKER_01Family ties, that's right.
SPEAKER_00Family ties. Maybe we should watch that one. I think you're right. I think we should. First, and then we'll watch this one and we'll get a sense of what it's all about. And who the characters are. Yeah. I mean, I think anytime you talk about parent politics, whoo, we've all been there. Kids are little, PTA, something else.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_00Oh my gracious. Woo, there's a lot going on there. You think it happens with just the kids? Uh-uh. So parents. So I I think I think this sounds this sounds interesting. I mean, we love Nikki and Benjamin. I'm not as familiar with the other actors who are in it. So I I think it has good potential. I mean, we we haven't really watched a lot of Hallmark mysteries, and we do like mysteries in general. Like we do watch a lot of you know PBS and whatnot, but um, we just haven't. So it's gonna be interesting to see. I think we definitely should watch Family Ties first.
SPEAKER_01Yes, I agree with you 100%.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah.
Haunted Harmony Ghosts And A Murder
SPEAKER_01So let's go on to our last all right.
SPEAKER_00The final fifth and final May for moms, although I'm still confused about the mysteries, but it's fine. Key to the Castle, a Haunted Harmony Mystery, premieres on May 30th. And this one stars Tamara Maori Housley and Marco Grazzini. There was no director or writer listed yet on the old IMDB. But the synopsis is when a ghost hunter show comes to town, it's up to Gethsemane, I think, and Iman to solve the unexpected murder of the host, allowing the brand new spirit to cross over. Oh my goodness. So we have not seen any of these either. I don't know how many haunted harmony mysteries there are. Maybe we should at least watch one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Before we uh before this one airs.
SPEAKER_01We're gonna be busy.
SPEAKER_00So, I mean, I think it sounds interesting. The mysteries actually sound pretty interesting to me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I'm looking forward to this one only because I love ghosts. stuff. Yes. You know, I'm big into ghost adventures.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01And ghost hunters. Yes. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_01So I I'm actually looking forward to this one.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. I think it'll be good. I think we should watch. I think we should go and try to track down the first one. Like I said, I don't even have any idea how many there are, but we'll go try to track it down and see what it's all about.
SPEAKER_01We can do a binge on both of those series.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well the other one's just one. So I don't know how many of this true justice is.
SPEAKER_01Then we'll do a beer. We'll do a beer and a binge of two.
SPEAKER_00A binge no I don't I think there are a few other um haunted harm harmony mysteries but I'm pretty excited about watching that one and maybe like we said we can pre-game it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. With a couple beforehand.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Well I think it sounds interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. So May's going to be busy for for five weekends. So yes.
SPEAKER_00I mean this this month this year is flying by so all right so what would you what would you predict is going to be your favorite of the five? Now I know we have like mysteries versus not mysteries. Right. Traditional rom-coms. We have two rom coms and three mysteries. So uh which one do you think you're going to like the most if you had to guess I know we don't know and we don't get screeners so we don't have any idea. We haven't seen any yet.
SPEAKER_01We're not privy to that been trying but not yet. But we we'll get there. We'll get there. I'm looking forward to the Kentucky Roses. I I think that's going to be a pretty good movie. I'm looking forward to all of them. But if I had to choose one or two I'm looking for I guess for the romance you know it's going to be Kentucky roses. For the com comedy it's probably going to be the uh all's fair and love and mahjong. As far as the mystery one I'm actually looking forward to the uh Keys to the castle.
SPEAKER_00Yeah I was going to say I knew you probably why do you think the Mahjong's going to be the funny one because of Paul Campbell?
SPEAKER_01Well I mean come on you just think okay I mean I yeah no he's fun I like him a lot yeah I just didn't know I mean you guys some great great actors and actors you know I mean come on she's funny too she yeah I mean in SSD Well we got to see how it is too I mean we got to see the tone of the movie we don't know. So what about you? What what are you looking forward to?
SPEAKER_00I um if I had to pick one it would be Kentucky Roses just because when I learned about the whole 1932 part of it all you know and then there is something that Andrew Walker says in that interview with Dara that was very interesting to me.
SPEAKER_01Okay.
SPEAKER_00And I don't want to spoil it because I want people to go listen to it. Yes go listen um but uh yeah but that would be my number one and of the mysteries I'm not sure I I'm kind of curious about the key to the castle also because I do like things like that as long as they're not too hokey right. So yeah I think I think I think we're in for a good a really good May I think Hallmark has started off the year really strongly there have been a few you know misses but generally we've had some really good and even if it was a miss it might have been a good idea it just didn't just didn't hit the mark. Yeah it didn't it didn't hit the mark so um so I think I think Hallmark has started off 2026 really strong and I think um may we're gonna have some good movies.
SPEAKER_01Yeah I think so too I agree I'm hoping me too so is that a wrap that is a wrap all right would we like to thank you guys for listening to us and watching us and and the best you can help more hallmark fans find us yes well you can by rating us on Apple and Spotify like the five five stars five stars like the five stars that would be great yep that's where people can find us watch us over on YouTube at Pourthewine is romcom time where you can click that like button hit the subscribe button so you don't miss any of our episodes when we release them.
