And because I'm all about mixing strategy with a little magic, you'll also get a little dose of Debbie DeLulu energetics and magic because mindset, intuition, and energy are just as important as the numbers. So.
Grab a coffee, get comfy, and let's dive in.
Debbie (01:06.038)
OK, so I'm really excited. I have Sonia Magnier with me today. This is like my very first time to host anybody. So Sonia, thank you for being my podcast number one guest. Yeah, so I hope that I want to try and bring as much value as I can in this episode. And so the feedback that I've been getting from the pod has been amazing. And I don't want to bring people on like guests for the sake of having guests, the whole purpose of the podcast.
It is to help salon owners and really bring like they're busy. So I want to get like people that have so much value to add. And I've only spoken to you in person twice. And each time I've come off the call with you, Sonia, you leave people with this impression of like elevation, like you're wanting, you give so much energy. And as soon as I got speaking with you, I was just like, yes, this lady has so much to do, and I can tell it's your purpose and passion. So yeah, I'm so excited to have you on.
So I'm going to just ask you to do your own introduction and tell us, for anyone who doesn't know you, I'd love you to share a little bit about like your background, how you got into your business, out of your business, and what you're doing now. yeah.
Yeah, OK, so I guess, going right back to the very start, I was 15, starting my career in hairdressing, and I was very lucky to begin with a fabulous company, and Guy. So I got a start to my apprenticeship and really got to see, I guess, how an amazing business works well and what the key.
foundations were within that business. Obviously, Tony and Guy is, you know, it's multinational, they're all over the world. And we got great opportunities to travel a lot. I worked alongside some amazing people who went on to open their own salons, which I found very inspiring. And so I decided at 22 that it was time for me to open my own salon. At the time, I had a daughter, my daughter Renee, who's now 26. She would have been just about to start school.
Sonia (03:09.356)
And when we speak about the why, that was probably the driving force behind it. My why was that I wanted to create a life that could give good value to Renee, to let her see that as a woman, you could fulfill your dreams and be ambitious. And yeah, it was a time that I found, I guess, yeah, it was a real, obviously a very
pivotal time in my life where I'd gone from having that freedom of being able to clock out of the salon, go in and do my thing, not have the stress and the worry of having a business, and no one ever prepared me for what was to come. So I dived in headfirst, and I'll always remember the premises that my salon was in was owned by one of my very good clients.
And her exact words to me were, Sonia, I think you'd be amazing in business. I think you should go for it. If it doesn't work out, you just throw the key back in the door. She's like, there's no, no, you know, implications if you decide it's not for you. Just give it a go. 20 years later.
You know what, I learned so much in that journey and particularly in the first, I guess, five years, I really got a great understanding of who I was and what was important to me. And I learned along the way, hadn't done any business prepping, know hadn't studied business. I just wanted to make money. I wanted to do great hair. I wanted freedom from that business, which I didn't necessarily set myself up.
War and I ended up very deeply immersed in the day-to-day running of the salon. The busiest person in there managing a big team at 15 at one point. My son then came along two years into that business. So I had two kids, 15 staff, age 24. It's a lot of responsibility at such a young age. And it's only now when I look back and realize the level of responsibility I had taken on.
Sonia (05:15.928)
Fast forward, maybe halfway through the business, 10 years in, I went into extreme burnout, realised that I had been, I guess, running very fast on the hamster wheel. And while the salon was very successful and we were hitting our financial goals, I was crumbling within that. I wasn't really taking care of myself on a deeper level. And so that brought me into learning yoga, meditation.
gathering all the tools I could to help me ground my nervous system. I was definitely running in fight or flight for most of my life, I would say. And I took a big interest in seeing the results that that was bringing to my life. And so over time, I went on to study yoga, meditation, breath work, and then decided that coaching was something I would like to explore. So I went on to hire a business coach.
And then I decided to study in that. And so I was between the two businesses for a while, and I could see my passion was very much fearing towards helping other people. And so, trying to balance the two because the financial success within my salon was very hard to let go of. But my heart wasn't in it anymore. Anyway, COVID hit 20 years into the business. I was at home being able to give more time to my coaching work.
I got a taste, I guess, of what it was like not to have my salon anymore. And because fear had stopped me from stepping away from it for many years, if I'm very honest, it really showed me what my life could look like without it. And so I decided to rent out my premises. I was very lucky. had staff in there who were very entrepreneurial. I now have two girls renting the space that I had my salon. And it's great to see it still as a salon.
I'm getting to do what I love and getting to help other people, then with, guess how I felt. You know, I always say to my clients, what I'm sharing now with you is what I wish someone had shared with me because I learned as I went along, I made the mistakes. I fucked up a lot on the way.
Debbie (07:29.6)
Like, we've all done that. We've all fucked it all up over and over and over. And I think actually that's what makes an excellent mentor or coach. You always want to show up for the woman or the man that you needed when you were going through that. Like from the people that you were helping, now, Sonia, you're helping people. You're that person you needed in your life, like 10, 15.
20 years ago. And I think what I see with people, like I'm around a lot of thought leaders and mentors and coaches and masterminds. And generally, people end up in the type of work that you're doing. It's because it's really purpose-led. So in the beginning, you said that your goal when you were a young mom was to obviously be financially secure, be free. And you obviously wanted to express yourself, like you're creative. You wanted to create this amazing business.
And that is what we all start out, think, in business is, you know, it's survival, it's money, it's freedom, it's lifestyle. But I do think as we get older, and I've seen this in my last couple of years, once you achieve financial success, your desires and hopes, and dreams, everything changes. The landscape changes pretty much overnight. And all of a sudden, you're saying no to absolutely everything that doesn't light your soul on fire.
And make you like if you're not doing something that you would basically do for free, you do get to the point you're like, no, that's not aligned with me anymore. And when I came across your social media, and Sonia, so we obviously have never met in person yet, but I came across you on social media, and I really was drawn to you because I was like, this woman is so authentically aligned with her current what you're doing now.
Like, there's no denying that when you get up and you go to help somebody, that you're doing it from the most amazing place. You've got the business acumen, you've got the experience. You've also experienced the shit, but now you're like super passionate about going out into the world and helping other people. And I just think when you operate from that place, you can't fail. So yeah, I love your story. It's amazing.
Sonia (09:39.246)
And I think you said to touch on that again, the values, you know, when we're talking about values, my values going into that business at 22 were very different to the values I had coming out of that business. Thankfully, I guess I can see now that it served me very well. It's that chapter of my life. I say this to my clients all the time that you're moving through life in different chapters, different seasons.
And the person that you are now could be very different to the person you are next year, and your needs, wants, and wishes are going to shift. And then it's up to you to align your life with what is important to you. Because I do think that, and I did it for myself for years, we can get very trapped within our own creations, and fear can keep us stuck in there. Change isn't easy. It's very difficult. And unfortunately, I do see a lot of people who are really stuck in that.
And my mission is to help them to see that there is another way.
Do you think, Sonia, and this was one of the questions, obviously, I didn't prepare for this, and you didn't prepare for it. We just said, let's go ahead, have a chat. I'm sure that we're going to need to come on again. Feel like you and I, when we get going, there might be no stopping us. Well, one of the questions I did actually have for you, I'd written down like three or four questions in case we hit like little blank spots in the chat, but you've just hit on something there about where they're feeling stuck. If I were to ask you, what's the number one thing you're coming across? Are they feeling stuck?
because they're not managing the numbers, and things are like creating an anxiety? Are they feeling stuck because they are making money, but now they're not fulfilled? Or is it a combination of, I've actually made enough money? I have my house paid for. I actually want to enjoy life. Like, where do you find the people? What are you coming up against? What's happening?
Sonia (11:34.19)
I think it's a bit of everything that you've just said. I have clients who are at the beginning of their journey. It just opened their cell, and they might be a year or two in. They realized it's a lot more challenging than what they had anticipated it was going to be. And so I love helping them, and I'm really excited that they've actually taken the steps to get support with someone who's been there and walked that path. And so that hopefully their journey going forward won't be so difficult. Of course, challenges are always going to come up.
But having the tools to be able to manage it better. And then I suppose, yeah, I have a lot of clients who are about to exit. And a lot of the support I'm giving them is actually rooting into the why. Why is it, you know, and then creating the strategies. So obviously we've got the logical piece of what they need to do, but then there's the emotional side of that, and that fear of being seen as failing, which I felt.
If I close my business, will I be seen as a failure? And actually we can switch that to, well, actuall,y it's in my opinion, more of a failure to stay there and suffer through something that you're not happy in.
Yeah, like, can somebody tell me what is wrong with exiting after 20 years with a pot of cash to go and invest in something and then having free time to live out your next like 10, 15 years doing something you love? A friend of mine sold her business recently, and she did really well on her sale and she sold it on her timeline. She had like, she's a younger woman. No, like she's, she's in her forties, but everybody that it was not in small business around her. Messaged her, like she kept me in the loop. So she's not in the beauty industry.
Okay. But we've been friends for years. So we talk business all the time. She's like a shrewd businesswoman. She's like numbers figures like, and this was it. We would always talk openly with each other. And I was supporting her like throughout the green for she messaged me and said, I'm going to sell. We were really close in lockdown and both of us, this is just, might as well be honest, both of us actually cried when we heard that we could open our business. Okay. We had such a, do you cry?
Sonia (13:42.572)
Well, slide my eye.
It's hey, yeah, so we had had such a rest, and you mentioned nervous system, and you mentioned busy. It had been such like in the beginning of lockdown, we had this huge like fight or flight response. How do we save our businesses? How do we survive? As that period went on, then we started to see that, OK, like there is life after what you know it, and things always work out. And then we had just become quite acclimatised. Now, I can't say we were making a whole pile of money at the time. Like we weren't.
But like we were sea dipping, we were hiking, and we were in the lake. Like, we really did enjoy it. We, yeah. So, like on the day I was on the side of a mountain. I was actually at the top of the Mourne Mountains on one of the highest peaks in North of Ireland. When I got the message on my phone and I was hiking friend of mine, she's a consultant, she's a doctor. She just said, are you okay? Because I literally plonked down on the mountain and started to cry.
It was July and I was like, my God, we could have just stung up one more month before the weather got good. But anyway, sorry, I just, when you said that, like, it was that feeling of like, God, it's, we have to go back now. And then obviously we knew that it was going to be weeks of people trying to, like, we were going to, every client who had ever frequented our business was going to try and book in the first four weeks. I was like, this is going to be a nightmare.
It was overwhelming. Remember that moment. can remember where I was sitting. I can remember where my husband was sitting. And I remember his face looking at me when they announced it, waiting for it. was honestly, and I'm still a little guilt when I say this, because I had some amazing clients and a team of staff who are genuinely excited to go back. And I was devastated.

My phone blew up that day. made so many friends with salon owners during lockdown. I supported a lot of entrepreneurs during that time because we needed each other.
But this particular lady, anyway, when she told me she was signing her business, I was like, congratulations. Like, this is amazing. She had started to plan her exit from around the time Log 10 happened. But she told me, going back to what we were saying, Sonia, like, so she has exited, she has invested that money, and she is fine. Like she may or may not do anything now. And she's young. She's going to be on the continent with her dogs and her husband in her camper van with her book, literally living her best life. But a lot of local people, she said, Deb, like the amount of people that were like,
and
Debbie (17:22.414)
What? Why are you selling your business? Like what's wrong? And they were like, sure. Why would you do that? They don't understand. And actually, regardless, I don't think she needed to like mentally get out of the business. I think it was also quite a smart financial move for her at this point to make this exit with her strategy. And she worked with a crowd who were really helpful with all that and things. And she got the sale across the line with the number that she wanted. But yeah, the thing, what you were saying, Sonia, going back to it, was there was that little piece around like, is it a failure?
You know what, like that's, that's just something that, you got to work with people and it, like you said, if you can help somebody achieve that mindset flip, like that's amazing. And then, yeah, you wouldn't go back. So you have no regrets of telling your business.
I still come across clients that I would see around, and they would ask me, I've had, I mean, I've heard it all. I've had clients say to me, if you ever change your mind, make sure you give me a call. I loved how you did my hair. I have so many people, still to this day, asking, Do you miss it? And I can honestly say hand in my heart, there hasn't been a second since I've walked away from that business that I have felt an ounce of regret.
No, because you're fulfilled. Now moving into the next phase of your era, Sanya, and you're fulfilled in what you're doing.
And funny enough, the universe will test you because even yesterday, got a from an ex-client asking, could I recommend somebody to her hair? Now, bear in mind, Debbie, I've been gone from that business for four years, five years now. And I think it was a, would you consider? And it was an immediate recommendation to the girls that I've taken over the premises. There's no way I was going to take her on.
Debbie (19:04.16)
No, it has to be. Yeah, that's it. You're coming out of a new phase. And when you've done something for 20 years, it becomes your paradigm, and it's extreme. And that's actually something that I help salon owners with a lot is stepping out of, not even stepping out of the business, but actually exiting from being on the treatment chair and been in the treatment room, even to get them to take that exit from being on clients to just being CEO seat. And that's where I'm helping a lot of people at the moment. It's the mindset.
So yeah, and I know that you're huge on the mindset piece as well. A lot of it is literally you need somebody to say, think about this differently. So that's obviously where having coaches and mentors is so amazing.
Exactly. And funny enough, I always remember being asked, you know, if I meet people for the first time, they say, What do you do? And I would say, and I had a salon with 15 staff turning six figures a year, but I still replied with, I'm a hairstylist. And it was only actually in the latter years of having that salon that I really shifted my mindset and started to see that I was a businesswoman.
way more than, sorry, there's nothing wrong with being just quote unquote, just a stylist. You're the head of marketing, head of sales, head of admin, you're HR, social media, and you are the strategist, the CEO. And then also, you care about your team members. So you're that person they come to when they need some support. So yeah, you're not just a hairstylist.
But again, it's that, you know, playing things down, which unfortunately a lot of my clients now are doing. And I'm supporting them with that feeling empowered as a leader because it's, it is, you said, Debbie, it's very hard to step away and to look at the bigger picture and, know, to see opportunities for growth in your business. can't, in my opinion, you can't do that when you're behind the chair or, you know, as a therapist, you're standing over clients all day long.
Debbie (20:59.916)
Hey, Sonia, is this not the perfect time to just drop a tiny teaser about our event? Because we have no details yet because we're, Sonia and I are at the point where it's just on our vision board sometime after the summer. Well, we decided, now I've never done an in-person, Sonia does in-person all the time. I am horrific in a group. I'm great online, great one-to-one, but there's definitely a need for an in-person event. And Sonia and I have decided to host a retreat for salon owners.
to give you guys a space to come in person. It's going to be really nice yoga. It's not going to be like it's going to be badass business vibes, but it's going to be the perfect balance of badass business vibes. But let's all take a second and let us help you ask some questions, give you time to center in route ,and just take the time away from your team, see where you're at and maybe let us help you kind of remap a little strategy for yourself.
We'll obviously do some talks and stuff to inspire them, but exactly what you said, Sonia, that one event or this conversation, and this is why I'm doing a podcast. Maybe me and you today chatting about exiting or chatting. Like I, all I hope is that somebody today is going to listen to the podcast and go, my God, that could be me. I could make this change. And that's really what we're about. So yeah, we do have an impressive event. We've no details cause we're, we're just not there yet, but
Yeah, it's going to be for the sole purpose of bringing salon owners together to give them a little chance to maybe reevaluate or even just a map out and strategize. Obviously, yeah, to bounce off of like each other network and also to have Sonia and I there to support you as well. So I'd throw that in there while we're on the topic.
I do think it would be amazing to do that because, for me, one of the biggest shifts came after stepping out. And it was that now I went all in and I did a week-long retreat in Malaga, and I wasn't the same woman stepping back on Irish soil. That week away from my business and from my life, honestly, was the beginning of everything that shifted for me. And you're nodding because I know that you can relate to it, because
Debbie (23:06.638)
as well.
You literally need to physically remove yourself from all of your responsibility and to be with yourself and to be in that uncomfortable silence. You can hear the niggles, you know in your heart what your next step is going to be, but how do you take that next right step for you and how do you do it confidently and how do you block out all the noise? And it's about getting really, really honest with what you actually want for that next chapter of your life.
Hey, let's do a little bit of that on the day, because that's so importan,t is actually knowing to take the step back and ask the questions. I haven't spoken about it on the podcast yet. And it's not something that I speak about a lot, but I personally have spent years studying mindset, business, leadership, performance, universal law. And I love studying the mental sciences. Now, if this podcast is not going to be all woo woo.
But it would be remiss of me not to honestly just say that it's a tool that I have used. So I obviously want to share everything. I will share all the numbers, figures, data, but the mindset piece and universal office is something that I'm really passionate about. And one thing that always, and I say this to anytime I'm working with somebody, I always have this like, when we talk about energy and matter and space and time, everything is taking up space. And the only way that you can
have something new, even if it's a jar of air, if you want something not air and that you have to put something else into the jar, or if you want to make space for something else, you got to take it out. And I always use this analogy with my masterminds and stuff. If I have, if you have an apple in your hand, Sonia, and you know, you really want an apple, or an orange, I should say, the only way you can get that is if you drop one to make space to pick up for the other. So I always use that little mindset.
Debbie (24:55.286)
If you don't create the space, you just stay in that paradigm and stay on that. And if you don't intentionally create a new goal or a new purpose for yourself, your habits and your daily routine will just have you recreating the same results over and over.
100%. And Debbie, I actually literally took a note of a very powerful quote that I heard. Now this can be applied to business also, you know, I mean, we're talking about business, but life business. So slow down and enjoy life. It's not only the scenery you miss by going too fast, you also miss the sense of where you are going and why.
Love the wine. Yeah. And they all say that's the even, Simon Sinek. You've probably read that book, Start with Why It's So Important.
Absolutely. And another one.
Keep it coming, girl.
Sonia (25:42.712)
Know what you prefer instead of saying amen to what the world tells you you ought to prefer is to have kept your soul alive.
That gave me goosebumps.
Yeah. And I have to say, just anyone that's listening that maybe is in that phase of their life where they're questioning, you know, what is next for me? Maybe they do want to exit their business, you know, or maybe they want to, as you said, be able to step back and be the CEO as opposed to being, you know, within immersed in it. The other thing that I have really looked at a lot recently is getting really honest with
What it is that you're creating space for, because what I've seen a lot of people do is, I want to step back from my business, and they'll come up with a strategy to be able to do that. You know, they'll put a lot of work into building the team up, empowering them, having them nice and busy. And then they're sitting at home, and I've had people say to me, Sonia, I don't know what to do with myself. It's just so uncomfortable. Like I feel the guilt, and what am I to do with the time? And actually there's so much.
That we have to, yes, be mindful of, because the world is set up to distract us. And I'm all about intentional living and how we spend our time and our energy. And we are going to come up with, you know, distractions from every direction.
Debbie (27:04.814)
Oh, Sonia, I can so relate to this. One of my clients this week said she had massive anxiety. Like she's finally gotten out of the business, and she's like, Deb, I'm out now. And then I had my first Saturday of,f and she was like, I had anxiety all day. Like this is normal. This happens.
because it's new. You're not used to that. I remember sitting at home on a Saturday when I made the decision to reduce my hours, literally twiddling my thumbs, procrastinating about everything and thinking about the salon all day long. might as well have been there. know, energetically, I was still in there, even though physically I wasn't.
Yeah. And so that is a huge piece. Sonia, I would love to talk to you about more of these things and more topics, but I'm going to wrap it up there. But I'm going to ask you to just share your handles. will put your links in the bio, but yeah, if you just want to give people a little shout, where to find you. Her social media, everyone is beautiful. One of my favorite people to follow. Like you just get the calm, glowy, brightality vibes, but yeah, you shout your handle.
Thank you. Thank you, Debbie. So it's Sonia Magner coaching on Instagram. That would be my most active. I am on LinkedIn. Don't use it a whole pile.
Same. People will come to us, Sonia. We don't even need to go out there looking.

Amazing, amazing. Sonia, thank you so much. If I was to ask you before I finish, what is, so this is completely unrelated. Tell me one thing that you're excited about in your life right now.
Excited for more travel. Excited for the freedom to just get up and go when I can. I want to go because I suppose my whole life really I didn't feel I had that. And now I can grab my laptop, I can board the flight, and I can go wherever I want.
I'm in

I love it, Sonia. I love it. And I haven't fully dove into your travel page, but I know that you're doing something with that as well. So everyone can keep an eye. If they go to your stories, they'll catch all the travels. I did obsess over your last stories, that you sat and you told us every detail about your trip to Lanzarote. I literally sat down, think Monday or Tuesday, you posted, a cup of tea, and I listened to every single detail. So keep sharing. Oh my God, I did. Love it. Oh yeah, like totally, totally. It was like I had just had a mini break.
because you explained about the meals, and beach, and the entertainment. And I was like, oh, yes. So I knew that is a good idea. And I loved that you did it right before Q2, and you inspired me. I was like, I need to start penciling smaller breaks in at the end of a quarte,r because exactly for the same reason you said I flourish and I travel on, sometimes I'll go away on my own. I thrive. I get two or three days without work. That's when all the, that's when I let, every time I need to level up, I retreat. And every time I retreat, I level up. So yeah.
And there you go, there's the typical example of that spaciousness. So much comes to us when we silence the world.
Yeah, Lainé, thank you so much. It was such a pleasure, and I hope that we get to have another pod at another stage and I'll certainly share the details of our event as well, and how popular. Thanks a lot for anyone who wants to reach out to you. Okay, my dear.
been pleasure chatting to you. We have so much to follow on from that.
