Welcome And Opening Prayer

SPEAKER_02

Welcome to Sharp Podcast. I'm your co-host Jay. And I'm Frank. And we're back with another devotional reading Romans chapter 10. Get your Bible, get a notebook just in case you want to write something down. And we're going to pray before we get into it. Heavenly Father, we thank you for this word. We pray that you bless the reading of the word, open the eyes of our understanding, enlighten our hearts, for your word is medicine to all our flesh. I pray that we understand it, we learn from it, we grow from it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Romans 10 Read Aloud

SPEAKER_02

Romans 10.

SPEAKER_01

So we got Romans 10. George, you want to read first?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I'll read first. Let's see. Okay. Paul here writing a beautiful letter. He says, Dear brothers and sisters, the longing of my heart and my prayer to God is for the people of Israel to be saved. Boy, you can't talk like that these days. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected zeal. For they don't understand God's way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God's way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. But Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given. And as a result, all who believe in him are made right with God. Duh, some people might say, right? Duh, Paul. Right. Verse 5. But for Moses writes, the law's way of making a person right with God requires obedience to all. If you take in notes, highlight all its commands, requires obedience to all of his commands. Verse 6, but faith's way of getting right with God. Ooh, this is where I come in. Faith's way of getting right with God says, Don't say in your heart who will go up to heaven to bring Christ down to earth, and don't say who will go down to the place of the dead to bring Christ back from the life again. In fact, it says the message is very close at hand. It's on your lips and it's in your heart. And that message is the very message about faith that we preach. If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by your believing in your heart that you are made right with God. I gotta repeat that. It is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God. And it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved. That just shows some of you, y'all better stop being shy about your faith. As the scriptures tell us, anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.

SPEAKER_01

Jew and Gentile are the same in this respect. They all have the same Lord who generously gives his riches to all who ask for them. For anyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him to save them unless they believe in him? And how can they believe in him if they have never heard about him? And how can they hear about him unless someone tells them? And and how will anyone go and tell them without being sent? That is what the scriptures mean when they say, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news. But not everyone welcomes the good news, for Isaiah the prophet said, Lord, who has believed our message? Yet faith comes from listening to this message of good news, the good news about Christ. But what about the Jews? Have they actually heard the message? Yes, they have. The message of God's creation has gone out to everyone and its words to all the world. But did the people of Israel really understand? Yes, they did. For even in the time of Moses, God had said, I will rouse your jealousy by blessing other nations, and I will make you angry by blessing the foolish Gentiles. And later Isaiah spoke boldly for God. I was found by people who were not looking for me. I showed myself to those who were not asking for me. But regarding Israel, God said, All day long I opened my arms to them, but they kept disobeying me and arguing with me. Romans is a good book. Such a good book. It's gotta be good, because them people had a lot of problems. Right. For real.

Misdirected Zeal And False Confidence

SPEAKER_01

Man, but right away what stuck out to me was um I think it was verse two. I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but it is misdirected Zelle. You say Zell? Zeal, I'm sorry. Yeah. I always mix up that word. I was about to say, you gonna pay me? Yeah, that's what I think about when I when I see that word, I think of Zell, and I always mix it up and say Zell. No, the Zeal. Man, I um I heard a song actually with the Zeal, and it was like, I don't I can't find it anywhere actually. I heard it live and I I don't know what the song is, but I think of that when I see this this verse. But what what I don't get that so I know what enthusiasm they have for God, but then he's saying that they've got it all wrong. Like, how is it that you can have such enthusiasm for good, but it not be correct? That explains Muslims to feel like I guess I mean, yeah, because the devotion is is crazy. Like, yeah, there's people who are very devoted to their religions who don't, you know, who don't believe in Jesus, and then you have people who where Jesus is Lord of all and there's a lack of devotion. Is down, yeah. But look, instead they're clinging to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. Why do you think, why do you think, why do you think they were so stuck to the law? Do you think it was too easy for it to be by faith?

SPEAKER_02

They were stuck to the law because our society says that when you earn something, uh-huh, it's your ability that has accomplished it. Therefore, the Bible speaks about puffing yourself up with knowledge. Yeah. In other words, increasing your ego about how much you have accomplished. And that's why some since the world has programmed us this way, you earn this. Oh, you earn this house. You can do whatever you want, you can remodel this house. But when you don't earn something, you're not at the disposal, you're not in charge of how to go about handling it. And people hate the fact that since I didn't earn this, I'm not in charge of what to do with it. If God brings salvation, right? If God brings the truth, if God brings a way for you to get close to him and you didn't earn it, some people feel, oh, then I'm not in charge. Oh, you damn right. Yeah. You not in charge. So I'm assuming those Jewish Sadducees and Pharisees, when they earned something, they felt like, oh, I deserve this. I did this, God help me, but I did this. No, that's not the truth. What I'm learning here is that zeal, okay. The verse says, Yeah. Let's say verse three. For they understand God's way of making people right, for they don't understand God's way of making people right with himself. Refusing to accept God's way, they cling to their own way of getting right with God by trying to keep the law. In other words, they're trying to keep the law, meaning they know they know the Bible, yeah, but they don't know what it means. They know about God, but they don't know God.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So they're enthusiastic, their zeal is in the wrong place. Yeah. Got it? I saw Stephen Furtick explain this in a sermon once. Zeal in the wrong place. He took a lamp, like a candlestick, and he started shoving it in front of people.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And people started backing up. Whoa, hold up, brother. He said, See how everybody's backing up when I put this fire in their face? But turn the lights off and let's see who wants to get close to this fire. It's a fire, is the zeal, the excitement. You got this zeal, which is powerful. You're supposed to have this zeal for God. You got you got this excitement, this passion to do things for God, to get to know God, to get closer to God. But when you don't know what the truth really means, oh, it's a dangerous game you're playing, baby. I mean, and that speaks for every religion out there. You got all these Jehovah's Witnesses knocking on every single door that you gone, but they don't know that Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Like they don't know he's the door. You knock on my door. Why are you knocking on my door? Jesus is the door. You got all these Muslims walking through the streets and laying their carpets down. Don't let your carpet down. Go in your private room and pray to the Lord Jesus Christ. They got zeal, yeah, devotion, but no truth.

SPEAKER_00

That's so good.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, come on now. You gonna read the Bible now? You gonna have the truth, baby? Do you want it or not? So good. I'm gonna say what Bruce Willis said in the movie, the truth hurts you, brother. They don't want the truth.

SPEAKER_01

You can't get this by yourself. Only God can give this. And also, how insulting when it says that they won't go along with God's way for Christ has accomplished the whole purpose of the law.

Why We Resist Grace

SPEAKER_01

Thank you for saying that. Man, you like I don't know about you, but I get so mad when um when anything happens to me that's inconvenient. That's true. I don't like I don't like spending more time on something that should have been done easily. I don't like, you know, wasting any time. I don't like it's just so inconvenient, you know? Right. I'm like, man, what could I have done instead of doing this over again or making up for someone's mistake or something that wasn't well planned out, you know, now I gotta fix it. And what could I been doing with this time? And like when I read this verse, I think about how silly, how silly to to do it your way, which is more effort and more time when Christ came and he did it this way. Did it all, did it, did it all, yeah, fulfilled the mission.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, and on that cross, since we're filming on Good Friday, yeah, we know Jesus' last three words were it is finished, the work is done. I think it's fascinating because the difference between our faith and the majority of every other faith out there, uh huh, like Muslims, yeah, is that they think they can get closer to God by their own good deeds and works. They think they can get into heaven by their own good deeds and words. But when you read the Bible and it says just like you read, for Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which everything was given, did it all, did the stuff we cannot do. Well, I don't get it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Why do we feel we can do things on our own? Yeah, I don't know, human nature, eh? I guess it's human nature, but I mean, I'm speaking real personally now, but I'm only 32 years old, and can I just say something? Life has broken me down to the point where I feel like I know I've just learned I can't do nothing without God. Okay, listen, I used to think that I could go, I could work and work and work and make more and more and more. Yeah, but then I remember God speaking to me like, okay, you can work now and earn and earn and earn, but don't you know it's me making your body work in a healthy way for you to even go to work? I you can own all the properties you want, George. But then he once gave me another example. He said, Don't you think it's me giving you the right tenants so that you could even have a stress-free landlord type of life? Yeah, like we can make all these efforts, but it's God who makes it fall into place neatly and perfectly and peacefully.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Our efforts don't mean a thing. That's true. I I forgot how it was said, but I remember when I was in college and I was learning a lot within my specific field. Um, there is a saying that I read in a book or heard from someone, and I was like, man, this is so true. Because I was learning, I was learning, and to some people, I was considered, man, intelligent, bright. He knew his stuff in the field, but I felt like I knew nothing. And I realized the more you learn, the more you realize you know nothing. And that's just like what you said. The more you're in this, you realize I can't do anything without God. No, like even when you have a safe job, it's like you know in a matter of a moment the job be gone. It could be gone. Yeah, your health can go bad. Someone could say something and twist things and they fire you. You stand for something you believe in and they don't agree, man. You could all come crashing down.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And I I love that's what a lot of old people understand about life. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, when you tell them your problems, they're they don't seem as worried about it. I used to be like, why aren't they worried about it? They just say stuff like, it's gonna be alright. Yeah. I'm like, it's not alright. Don't you see what's happening? It's gonna take me a whole year to get over this and pay for this and get through this, and it's gonna be alright. It's gonna be all right. They've lived so long that they know this life we live, it's not in our hands. Yeah, there's a master up there dictating what our efforts are impactful, good, you know. He's the one who's weaving all this life together. It's not us. We don't accomplish anything. That's true. You know, even if you think some of us have accomplished something great, like, man, I know Philip Anthony Mitchell's a pastor that's blowing up right now. Okay, and he just recently had an interview and he said that he has the biggest temptation he has right now is thinking that he made 2019 blow up. Oh wow. And he says the Holy Spirit's always reminding him, I'm not doing this for you. Yeah, I'm doing this for me. In other words, you're not even a part of this, bro. Like, you just a bad thing. God says you're crazy.

SPEAKER_00

This ain't about you. That's true.

SPEAKER_02

Like, if you think anybody around you has ever done anything good and great and grand, it wasn't about them. Yeah, you know, this podcast ain't about me and Frank. This podcast is about just making sure God's instructions are poured out into the world so that everybody can be aware. This has nothing to do with us.

SPEAKER_01

I think that's fascinating. That's the problem, though. I think that's where a lot of bad things happen. Is the moment you think it's about you. Right. Like, even you know, even when we like I was in a prayer room and they were someone was praying, and it hit me like they were they were praying and they were asking God for forgiveness. And they were like, sorry for all the times I've even preached, and I said, That's a good message. Like when what I shared. Yeah. Because it it's not about you, whether it was good or bad. As long as it was the word, the word says that it's gonna touch hearts. Right. Seeds will be planted. That's good. And I was like, man, like that's what I thought of. Like, it's not about us. Right. Or like when you when you're at church and you you you're part of a nice worship set, and you're like, man, I crushed those notes, or man, we did good. It's not about you. Yeah, you know, like man, I I smiled at all these people, I made them feel welcome in this place. Yeah, it wasn't about you. Yeah, you know, I have good personal skills, interpersonal skills, right? It's not about you, right? That's about you.

SPEAKER_02

And by the way, according to the Bible, I shouldn't even think I deserve anything good because I don't. I don't. I mean, according to the scriptures, we deserve hell, death, and destruction. We do. I remember speaking to this person, and I've said this story countless times on our podcast. That they I was like buying my building, and they told me I was fixing it up, and I was like, man, and they told me, Oh, you deserve it. And I remember telling them, I don't deserve anything. I don't know what you thought. Oh, you deserve it, you deserve all this. I don't what do I deserve? I don't deserve not a thing, okay? Just because I grew up and I was well behaved does not mean I deserve God's grace. The rich young ruler came to Jesus, and I think he had the mentality that he deserved the opportunity to follow Jesus, and Jesus told him what the standard was, walked away sad. Yeah, you don't deserve anything, bro. Even Jesus didn't think he deserved anything when he called him good teacher. He said, Who's good? Only God is good. Yeah, that's so true. Jesus basically said, I don't deserve anything. Yeah, I'm lucky to be here. That's crazy. Jesus!

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he said, Yeah, he said, only God is good.

SPEAKER_02

Remember, okay, you guys remember the disciples when they said, We want to know who's gonna sit on your left and who's on your right. And Jesus said, That's not my place to even give that kind of authority. Jesus basically saying, I don't I don't even know where I'm gonna sit. You know, I'm lucky to be here. Where where does this humility come from? Yeah, Jesus. Blows my mind. Yeah. And and I think that's what these Pharisees that Paul is speaking about.

SPEAKER_01

Even, you know, okay, like I don't I don't really listen to um Bryce Crawford, but I I listened to his last episode. Kenneth Copeland. Kenneth Copeland. Bro, Kenneth. When all of a sudden somebody got Kenneth Copeland. Well, not only that, but I was telling my wife, I was like, I don't care what people say of Kenneth Copeland, I love his faith. He he knows the word. Yeah, I don't agree with the fullness of the prosperity gospel, but this man knows his Bible. Oh, he lies. I said, when there's Kenneth Copeland, I listen. And so I listened to it. And um, and man, like, okay, so this is where I was going with it.

Jesus’ Humility And God’s Provision

SPEAKER_01

You know, when G we just passed Palm Sunday and Jesus went into the town and he was riding on the donkey, right? Mm-hmm. And yes, he Jesus borrowed the donkey. Okay, you can look at it that way. He Jesus, you know, people look at the gospels and they're like, Jesus didn't have a car, Jesus didn't have a house. Yeah, he because he knew like his mission. It wasn't the pilgrim, right? That's the way we should live as a pro pilgrim. But also, like, but everything was his. Everything was his. That donkey was his, right? That house was his. That fish that paid the taxes, that was his. You know what I'm saying? And so, like, that's where I'm I'm understanding with the prosperity gospel. Like, people, yes, they take it on the extreme, but then there's people who want to live like a life of a believer in suffering because they're like, no, Jesus was so humble and so lived in humility, so I deserve nothing. And I'm like, but it that both views don't add up, like there's an in-between. Like definitely look at Proverbs, look at Deuteronomy 8.18. It says, For the Lord God is the one who gives you the power to obtain wealth, right? You know what I'm saying? Like, because of the oath he made with Abraham. So I'm saying all this because Jesus was so like humble, but he had it all. Right. He had it all. And so, like, I just think that's that blows my mind. Like, for someone like Jesus who came down from heaven to fulfill this purpose of being the sacrifice, the lamb of God, right? And like living this life like he didn't own a thing. How? How?

SPEAKER_02

Man, but people gotta know God provided everything for him. Yeah, for real. Every single thing, even tax money, but how like to not allow Jesus to get locked up for tax fraud for real.

SPEAKER_01

But it just blows my mind. Like, how can someone who has it all live like he's borrowing everything?

SPEAKER_02

Well, Jesus taught his disciples to pray, and I think the disciples did a good job in asking Jesus to teach them to pray. The disciples didn't say teach us to preach. Let me keep that out. He said teach us to pray. Yeah, everyone wants to preach. He didn't say teach us to preach, Lord. He said teach us to pray. And I find it interesting that out of the almost 500 names the Bible gives God, Yahweh, Jehovah, Jireh, Jehovah Muscabi, Jehovah, Jesus' prayer didn't mention any of those names. It said our Father. Our Father. Yeah. Our Father. And the Bible continually describes what kind of father God is. He says, You fathers are evil and you give good gifts to your children?

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You think me? I'm gonna give and I give good gifts? Gifts.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Provide provision. Gifts. You know, oh, you need somewhere to live. You don't think God's involved in every detail of our lives? Yeah. And the fact that we want more bedrooms for our children to live comfortably, and the fact that we want to pay for great tuition, and the fact that we want a car that gives us to work, you know, in a reliable manner, and the fact that we want to take our parents out for pizza once a week, you don't think God is involved in that? I I can't agree with anybody who thinks the opposite. Yeah. God wants what's Best for us. I'm not saying we're all gonna be millionaires, but I am saying God provided for Jesus, He's a good father, God's gonna provide for you and I. Yeah, you know, I think that's yeah. I'm shocked he did that interview though. Yeah, I'm very shocked. Me too. Because they're like polar opposites in their own. Well, I don't know about him.

SPEAKER_01

I know Kenneth Copeland, though.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, well, Kenneth Copeland hasn't done an interview in like 20 years. I couldn't believe it. Yep. I just but I did like the humility of of Bryce, even though he didn't agree, he was like trying to give him some tough questions. And he had he was like, Well, that's a good question.

SPEAKER_01

Let's go to Luke chapter two there.

Hearing The Word And Kingdom Thinking

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's what I love too. When I think that, well, is that something? Um well it yeah, I mean it relates to what we just read in Romans where it said, you know, you your faith comes from hearing the word of God, right? And the good news has to be preached. I love that if you looked in that interview, if you haven't seen it, go see it. But he a lot uh almost everything was based off the word. Everything. Yeah, and I and that's what I'm noticing when I'm having conversations with people, whether it's agreements, disagreements, uh you know, are we going to the word? Like I I don't really care for your opinion. You know, is it is it is it based off the word of God? Right. Like there's no room for our opinion. There really isn't. There's no room for even me to have an opinion. Like that was something that like when I went on when I went on my trip, that was another thing that God was talking to me about in regards to purity. It's like when we get caught up in sin, sometimes it's like we we have to have an opinion, especially if it's like a sin that wasn't done to us, you know? But like, what do I think of that person, or how do I feel, or how do I think they should feel towards that person? But it's like you don't need an opinion, right? There's none in your business, right?

SPEAKER_02

People even me now, uh huh, even hearing a sentence like that it irks something in me, just a tiny bit. Your opinion don't matter when you say that it's something in me was like, it better matter. It matters sometimes, and I gotta cast that thought down. But I just think it's so fascinating that the temptation for our opinion to matter will always come up. But I think it's important to realize that God's world is not a democracy, yeah. Okay, it's not the way England, yeah, it's not the way Nigeria, it's not the way the United States of America works. There's not a board, yeah, there's not a committee, it's a kingdom. Yeah. In other words, in a kingdom, only one person's opinion matters, and that's the king. What did the king say? How does the king want us to eat? How does the king want us to dress? And we don't have that experience with kingdoms, you know, because kingdoms pretty much stopped like 500 years ago. Now we think everything requires everybody's opinion. We take a vote. Ain't no votes in this, bruh. I don't know if you realize God's not concerned with what you think about what he said.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

You know, and I honestly, and if people do think like that, I don't want to sound harsh. I want to sound graceful. The grace in us thinking like this is not for our harm, it's for our good. Keep in mind, the same way when we take a live photo and it's literally a moment of three seconds, and then it shows you the panel of all the photos it took in those three seconds. This is how God sees our lives. Yeah, He sees, oh, this is gonna match over here, this is gonna work well with Frank over here, George is gonna come in this place, all of a sudden, my glory is gonna come from this situation. He sees your life.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

From by the way, he's seen everybody on earth's life, yeah, and he knows exactly how to weave everything together for his good, for your good as well. That's so good. How can we be so arrogant to think, oh, he's not gonna make best of my life? Oh, my opinion matters. I don't even want my opinion to matter anymore. Like, I used to want stuff that I just don't want anymore because I know God knows way better than me. Exactly. Yeah, and that's
