The Shawn Mackey Show: Chronicles of a Dumbass Chicago Sports Fan

The Dumbass Chicago Sports' Fan dives into the Top 100 MLB players of the 20th Century

Shawn Mackey Season 1 Episode 17

Send us feedback and get a shout out on the show!

This I dive into the top 100 MLB players of the 20th Century. All right, ladies and gentlemen welcome to episode number 17 the Shawn Mackey show notice. I paused there for dramatic effect we’ve been giving a stern talking to by family members and some listeners and they feel that the Shawn Mackey show Chronicles of a Dumbass Chicago Sports' Fan is a mouthful and they said Why not just be the Shawn Mackey show and I said OK

So I’m still a dumbass. I'm still a sports fan. We are going to be a sports driven show but being just the Shawn Mackey show. Let me bring it back to kind of what I wanted to accomplish the whole time: setting up a podcast as I’ve told you before other episodes I wanted to get into radio, and I always felt not necessarily as a talk show host, but something of that realm. It started when I was a weed little lad growing up in Chicago, listening to WLS in the Larry Lou Jack show and uncle Larry was funny man had sound effects.

Until Next week!

All right, ladies and gentlemen welcome to episode number 17 the Shawn Mackey show notice. I paused there for dramatic effect we’ve been giving a stern talking to by family members and some listeners and they feel that the Shawn Mackey show Chronicles of a dumbass Chicago sports fan is a mouthful and they said Why not just be the Shawn Mackey show and I said OK.

He had guests, he had segments and people loved them and he had a big following and he was great for us to listen to, and that’s kind of where it started. My mom always had him on, in fact I think it was from WLS.

That my mom want a car they were doing 44 cars a giveaway a car a day for 44 days and you had to fill out all these cards to enter and you could put peoples names down so if you won the car two people could win a 10 speed bike.

There was a local bike shop involved in the promo. My mom had my dad fill out hundreds of these entry forms and she was convinced she would win. She was so convinced that she had to go in for surgery and she asked the doctor if she could keep her headset in like you know back in the day, they have these old transistor radios with this one little big fat ear plug you’d put in your ear.

Thankfully, the doctor put the kibosh on that but anyway she ended up winning and somebody heard her name being Jon came over and told my dad. My dad called in and they said if you can verify what’s on the card my dad was like hell I filled them out so he verified everything. My mom won a 1978 Ford LTD two a boat of a vehicle.

My sister and I each had 110 speed bikes. She got to pick the car up at Kaminski Park. They they drove them all out line them all up all the winners were out there doing all the promo stuff And she won the bike.

That’s kind of weird. It all started with Larry Lujack and I’m pretty sure that was WLS. I'd have to do some research. That’s what the old brain is telling me right now so that’s what we’re gonna go with and then it got into later years after high school and things of that nature getting away from the music only.

And I used to listen to US 99 in Chicago country and you know they had the morning shows and there was always that banter so it kind of continued with that and then you’d get your music and then after a while while I was driving a truck in the Chicagoland area I would I would love to listen to Steve and Gary and the Kevin Matthews show and all those guys on the Loop at the time and Kevin Matthews especially because he did the voices and he had the tricks with the board and the sound effects going and I always thought yeah that’s what I would actually really like to do. I could go and work in radio and just be a DJ and just play the music and follow the log And just give your station identification every now and again and get paid for it and that also be.

But I think in the grand scheme of things when I started this podcast, I didn’t. I don’t have a niche. I am not an expert in something and over the course of the last 16 episodes as I’ve kind of struggled with the direction of the show and things that I wanna do it kinda dawned on me and I got away from telling the specific stories because a lot of the stories that I have. I’ve come to find out that those are better told when you’re with a bunch of people you know you’re sitting around summer night fire in your cul-de-sac or your driveway and the neighbors are there and you’re having some cold beers and you’re all talent story so you were late off of each other and your stories get laughs and it’s great but in a setting like this, they don’t always hit Home so I don’t have this niche. I don’t have this expertise But what I do is a guy who likes to talk. I’ve lived a lot in these 57 years. I do have a lot of stories.

Some of the stories would make your toes curl so we’re still kind of gonna get into those things and so this is the Shawn Mackey show. This is me being me Finally and that’s a lot of rhyming that I did unintentionally.

I can’t stop now ladies and gentlemen, but I’m still gonna discuss the sports, but I’m not gonna give you that the recaps of the games I mean hell you can go to espn.com and find out the scores and look at the box score and find all that same shit I’m given to you, it’s freaking pointless you know.

You can get all that stuff. I'm gonna give you my analysis of these guys in what I see like Daniel Palencia again blowing a save in that loss to the Pirates an extra inning so far. Thankfully right now you’ve taken two out of three from the Pirates and I’m on the fence with this. Are you from the camp that the Cubs are still pretty good? They’re doing what they need to do to win games or are you of the camp that says That wheel on the back of the bus is starting to wobble again cause I can’t figure out which one I am right now I’m kind of on that fence because today again just a little two to one victory against the Pirates. It was kind of touch and go for a while.

The game that they lost the pirates score I think in the eighth and the Cubs tired, so that’s where I see. It’s like the greediness the scrappiness these goes these guys are going out and doing what they’re supposed to do when ball games But at the same time I’m sitting on the back of the bus and going Hayden and anybody who feel that what’s that noise did you hear that and other people are looking at me like what you know and then next thing you know 2 miles down the road we’re all standing on the side of the road. It’s fucking 108° outside fucking dude’s got handkerchiefs wiping the sweat off their brow while they’re holding their sport coats over there fucking shoulder and the fucking smoke in the tire fell off of the bus and we’re all window and when a tow trucks gonna get there and another bus so we can get where the fuck it is we were trying to go so yeah I’m on the fence about that so again like the intro says my mind wanderers I was telling you the show direction I get into the Cubs and my analysis. Kind of wanted to just show you what I could do.

I don’t like Father’s Day just simply because I don’t have a lot of memories of father's days growing up. My dad didn’t wear ties. I’m sure we probably got them socks and underwear. My parents were divorced.

They didn’t like each other so I’m sure my mom didn’t spend money on them. We didn't have any damn money so I’m pretty sure the holiday got overlooked. Maybe we put some chicken on the barbecue or whatever I don’t know doesn’t really matter then I lost my dad when I was 17 years old and then as I’ve grown up through life, and I look back on the things with my dad of the stories of which you will hear Some good, somewhere bad, some where terrible.

I’m starting to realize the kind of person my dad was doesn’t make me love him any less because he was my dad but makes me feel better about how I’ve chosen to live in my life so then I just you know I do the dad things I you know I go to work and the husband and the father and go to all the games and I do these things, but I cherish my time alone so a lot of times when.

I have my time alone, I don’t feel like I’m worthy of all the accolades that go along with the Father’s Day and besides that it rained most of the today so I didn’t even get to mow so tomorrow I’m gonna be mowing working sweating so you know I just I don’t like all the accolades but maybe we’ll have some ribs tomorrow and I know they’ll make a big fuss and I absolutely adore and appreciate them for that so you know in September ladies when you listen to this episode, could you finally get caught up on all the shows you’ve missed? That’s kind of why I don’t ever bring up and tell you you know what I want or what I wanna do because you know every day is Father’s Day around
