Season 1: Question 6 - What indulgence do you practice to feel good about yourself?
What indulgence do you practice to feel good about yourself?
[Music] welcome to 10 women bringing together 10 women with 10 thought-provoking questions based on one[Music] theme during this episode of 10 women we will hear 10 different answers to this question what indulgence do you practice to feel good about yourself this question was really interesting uh when we talk about this question we were thinking "Wow we're going to hear such a great list of indulgences and we did we did hear some great ideas but several of the women really struggled with the word indulgence." To many women I feel like they thought it was negative or selfish and that wasn't our intention at all we love the word we thought it was perfect because it's not a guilty pleasure or a simple treat it's something good that we do for ourselves for example I get a massage once a month um I struggle with back pain and hip pain and the massages kind of keeps me you know in line and and out of pain i know that it's an indulgence and I know that I'm privileged to be able to do this but having that level of restorative treatment is such a mental health boost and it makes me a nicer person yeah yeah what about you so I'm a single mom and I I work a lot so I don't have a lot of time to myself so one indulgence that I do is I literally block an hour every day that's just for me i just I can do whatever I want if I want to sleep or take an or you know take the dogs for a walk or or read it's just for me and it's a my alone time to myself so it's an indulgence before we hear the 10 answers remember to take a moment to think about your own answer to this question what indulgence do you practice to feel good about yourself and don't forget that we want to hear your answers too follow our 10 women series on Instagram to share your thoughts and to read the responses of others in our community visit our website to find other ways to connect uh my name is Abigail Dun Moses and I am an educator of adults who heals the brokenhearted indulgence and feeling good about yourself is an oxomoron let's start there let's start there well I'm going to I'm going to go a level deeper uh I um belong to a 12step program that has to do with uh overeating so when I hear the word indulgence to me that's says disease when I hear the word feel good about myself what it makes me think about is the things that I explore that bring me joy uh that introduces me to new ways of connecting with people um that's what that makes me think of so that's why that particular word was uh sensitive for me because my indulgences have never been in my best interest the criteria for indulgences now if you consider getting a massage an indulgence I indulge acupuncture I indulge going to the gym I indulge okay so if that's the criteria that you want to use for indulgence which means I spend my time doing it uh then that would be the case but I would separate that because one is lifegiving and one is uh desecrates your life what it brings to mind is the seasons of my life um and the things that I had to do that robbed me of myself that's when when you are describing in that way that's what it's making me think about and uh you know I have interesting conversations with my children because I uh hard for me to say but I'm a workaholic uh and my children grew up with me being that way but I always said to them you see all these things you have they come from work um and as adults they have a deeper appreciation but I think there was some years there between teenage years to when they were in their 30s maybe 30s later late mid30s that uh they saw the sacrifices that I made as taking away from them and I also saw it as taking away from me my name is Anne Sparks hyphen Bombgardner and I am a caregiver um I'm a member of a women's organization that I'm very passionate about i am a cyclist um I'm a road road cyclist and um I love being outdoors well I do get a massage once a month i decided that that was I'm worth it and this guy is really wonderful so I I definitely um I get a massage once a month and my cycling is an indulgence because it it uh it allows me to go out and you know breathe good air and be with socially with other friends that are in enjoy the same uh practice and um and I push myself i I have to push myself but uh um I I made a a vow to myself a year ago that I was going to get better and I have i have i really have i've been cycling for 30 years but I took a break for a while and uh so it's uh I do like to occasionally buy some desserts i have a sweet tooth and um I'll just go to Whole Foods and I'll get a piece of cheesecake you know uh so um I have a bed heater and I make sure that when I go to bed at night uh my bed is warm i mean in the in the general population I would be called sort of a fanatic not I mean I'm not a racer i'm not interested in racing um but I like the way it makes me feel after after a long hard ride and go out ride 33 miles and and I mean I think wow um it's uh it's just an exhilarating feeling i'm not really interested in endorphins or or anything like that but um my husband introduced me to cycling and took me on the Blige Parkway and I went down a hill and I was like "Oh my gosh." I mean this is just this is just incredible feeling a freeing feeling and uh it's scary it's also scary you know and I have friends that that at my age now are not cycling they're worried about all the cars but um it just it just opened up a world for me that I never imagined and I've done a lot of cycle touring in Iceland and Denmark and up the coast down i've cycled from Seattle to Mexico um you know just it it's an incredible way to travel to be outdoors and so um and I'm proud of of what I've accomplished so I guess it's just just a wonderful feeling so my name is Judy Fowler i am an educator a mom and a team player the word indulgence is tricky i don't know if I do in the sense of indulgence I think of something like you know I'm gonna go take a bath in chocolate something extreme like that i'm going to be the strawberry that just gets thrown in the top of the chocolate what do you call this the fountain you know and I'm just going to you know turn it into a Willy Wonka movie and and you know drink from the chocolate river and shoot up through the plastic tube um um honestly I think finding peace has become my indulgence and making time i've always been the type with when I'm stressed go take a walk go exercise you know I used to I still think about how much time I used to have as a college student and probably why I've been trying to claw my way back to higher ed to have some space and and and to have some time and freedom that way not that we do on this end of it being a faculty member but outside is my piece and and to be able to just go outside and dig in the dirt and take my dogs for a walk it's breathing in the fresh air that probably has to be the the the simple the less animated indulgence comfort in shoes i mean I think that for me um I don't know if the indulgence would be I don't know yeah I've never really thought of it that way i guess for me this is almost a necessity because I have to travel on my feet a lot being a former elementary physical education teacher shoes are important you know I have to have the right tools in my toolbox so to speak so I think this is just something that's translated uh and I think to creating uh and establishing an identity in higher education i know that being a faculty member in kinesiology and being able to lead a health and physical education program I can wear in all my life I've been able to wear fun clothes compared to the rest so I guess this is my my way of um treating myself every once in a while is having a nice pair of kicks to walk around be comfortable but yet be retro and fashionable in the same lens too i am Leanna Martin and I am an aunt a daughter and a friend i don't know if I have that many indulgences but um I do like I used to be a Starbucks girl spending way too much on coffee was an indulgence i don't do that quite any quite as much anymore um the most recent thing I think I kind of indulge on and I don't know if it's even to feel good about myself it's just a nice convenience is buying those pre-made meals where you don't have to cook and you just pop it in the microwave that's like that's a thing I do now thought I would never do but it's like I don't have to go to the grocery store i don't have to cook it's wonderful so yeah that's one of the little little pleasures in life that I do now that I haven't done before well I shop sheen a lot so that's where these are from it's like all the stuff and that is kind of an indulgence having way more shoes or clothes than I need but I mean they were also very economical cuz I got them off a sheen so and that is another indulgence yeah I like um dressing up and you know having something different to wear every day which is not necessary but it's a thing I like to do it makes me feel good my name is Terry Wiggins and I am a woman i am a mother and I am a daughter as I've mentioned I am passionate about my work and I love helping people heal from a physical mental emotional and spiritual perspective and it brings me such joy to see this transformation so that is truly one of the um biggest impacts that I indulge in um I also meditate every day 20 to 30 minutes i write in a gratitude journal three things that I'm grateful for on a daily basis and I feel that in my heart and I also journal and the journaling I've done this for years so two to three pages a day and I sometimes write mundane things task oriented things but a lot of times I get enlightenment or these aha moments and that has been very valuable to me to journal every day and then I have a strong sense of family so my daughter and I connect regularly and I have two sisters and their families and we just keep each other anchored and um we have a Wiggins women thread that we keep going on on a text the other thing I really appreciate doing which I think I've mentioned is volunteer work and um I've done that most of my life and I find that I probably receive a lot more from others while I'm volunteering than actually I share with them um and my latest volunteer work has been in High Point a woman asked me to share with three of her classes that were 90 minutes long in a health and science focus she asked me to share what it's like to be a family nurse practitioner um so I got to see what high school was like these days how interactive it was or was not and um so that was a volunteer that I really appreciated the opportunity to get to do and I've had many others but okay so one of my favorite things to do is laugh and my mama taught me how to laugh it's in her family and we often had to cross our legs or we'd have a little accident if we didn't so um what I tend to do again I told you I was from Indiana and there's a lot of we're in the corn belt and my dad used to make up corny jokes and so I'm following in his footsteps so I tend to make up corny jokes just so I can laugh at my own self so that's been that's been fun and um the last thing that I indulge in is traveling i've traveled many many places around the world of course in the United States and I love to enter into new cultures i love to um experience new foods and nature so those are my indulgences oh no one more one more indulgence excuse me i am a part of many many communities and that has been valuable for me once a month I go camping with a group that looks at survival skills and also the sacredness of community and we go camping no matter what the temperature is in a place in Rams nearby um I am part of a the healing tree circle we meet every Tuesday and we do healing work on each other that's been a beautiful loving community i'm part of together women rise where we meet once a month for potluck and we go over grants that we've given money towards for third world countries where women are focused on to in their business world or in their educational world and again oh my goodness so many different people I'm meeting throughout these different communities I've I've chosen to participate in it's been great my name is Susan Sassman and I am an extrovert a creative visionary and a nurturing kind of gal when I want to feel really good about myself I will cook something fabulous now there was a time when I couldn't eat for about a year when I had esophageal cancer and I had to be fed through a tube in my stomach and after I recovered from that and this was 15 years ago I started to develop this love of food very slowly bringing back into my body different flavors and different foods and kind of you know realizing that there's a whole world out there to appreciate up until that point I'd really just used food as fuel um but now I was really falling in love with it and and I'm very very passionate when I'm in the kitchen I am in my home space when I create something beautiful and and you know hand it over present it to friends and family I feel just on top of the world and I'm a really good cook and I'm really proud of that uh another thing I do is um self-care i'll book a massage i'll take a bubble bath um you know I'll go and lay out in the sun and let it hit my face i'll I'll go and buy some really great chocolate um self-indulgence you know just feeding the things that make me happy um chocolate and sunshine and music and you know or I'll dance by myself um but it becomes all about me and not taking care of anybody else just me um I also love to plan trips with people um so get together and drink wine and plan a trip somewhere a girl trip is always fun even if it's just a you know a three-day one to Greenville or something or a bigger one to Greece or to Italy and put it out there a year or two in advance and then spend your time working towards that and getting excited so uh yeah exploring the world with friends taking care of me and um and cooking that's my go-to and that's what my sister would tell me when I get depressed go cook something go plan a weekend away right something like that um hi my name is Michelle i am a gynecologist bicyclist and someone who loves life used to be shopping that used to be great like a good dopamine hit just from you know getting something had to pull back a little bit on that with the um with the change in the the career a little bit now I got to be a little bit more mindful um I have to say that the indulgence that I have is is being on that bicycle and I'm still riding a regular bicycle on the road with my friends but I the big indulgence was getting the mountain ebike so that I could keep up with my friends that I could enjoy the ride as opposed to be struggling through it um as you get older your fitness takes a little bit longer to recover after you've not been doing it exactly what you need to and I've never been a very good um run up short choppy hills very well so just last week I went with my friend uh Laura and she was like "I want to get 30 miles out of this ride we're going to do six laps of this uh this uh ride today." And I was like "Okay sure." Which was great until I ran out of battery at 27 miles but did make the last three miles just fine and we finished our 30 miles and we had a good time so um I I indulge in getting out on my bike as much as possible and being able to to to ride with my friends is actually uh one of my favorite things to do my name is Marie Leonard and I am a mom a daughter and an energetic lover of life so I um we have a a long st I have very big feet um and so I always have my toes done um so I love to have a pedicure um and that it feels like an indulgence um because it just it's a it's extra budget um and it's time so that is always nice and it does make me feel like these these things are a little more like presentable um and so that's one little thing massages are nice i feel like um some you know good olive oil like good ingredients i know I can't always have everything like from Whole Foods but like when you can have a little something kind of savoring that and enjoying it um last night we had like purple cauliflower and it would just was like so happy um to have purple cauliflower um it was a little expensive but it was really cute and made me happy and I put like truffle oil and and that was really good so I f I find like little little things um I'm not in a position to do like extravagant trips or anything i I mean that would be nice but that's just not part of what I can do so I think finding small things that you can enjoy along the way um instead it's still fun and it still makes things nice i I don't feel it's like an indulgent but it it's not 100% i don't know it's but like doing my craft and like enjoying I enjoy stitching and enjoy embroidery i enjoy sharing it with people so making sure I have enough supplies to share freely and not be like"Oh that's you know I lost my stuff." But like I always am kind of finding things and then giving it away um so that feels like an indulgence because it's just it it feels joyful and I enjoy teaching people and I love when they come back and show me what they've made so that always makes me feel happy um so that's like a simple indulgence of having enough to share um so that I can also like teach people how to how to cross stitch which is or embroider either one I Yeah but it's fun my name is Abigail Seymour and I am an entrepreneur a lawyer and an enog 7 i am obsessed with Taylor Swift that is my indulgence i know that sounds like not an indulgence but you know I kind of thought about all the things cuz I do love I love to knit i love to play around with makeup i like to get massages you know those are indulgences but when I think about something that I really kind of bathe in and it's a recent discovery and it feels a little bit off-brand which is why it's even more fun for me is the kind of going into the rabbit hole of the Swifty universe which is all it's a whole language like it's a it's a it's a country I never visited until about a year and a half ago and now I can't get over it but it's a place of like glitter and acceptance and love and cheerfulness and I indulged in going to see her concert so I was like there are a couple things I said in my life which one was I I'm going to before I die I'm going to ride around the shel on a moped and I did that and I was like before I die I'm going to go see Taylor Swift in the Aerys tour and I did that so it's it's a strange thing for a woman of my age but when I got there and saw so many other people just like me I don't know it touches some sort of different different era for all different women all different ages and um once you sort of drink the Kool-Aid you get like I like her so that much now that my daughter who introduced me to her she's like not into her anymore because now I like her too much so that's my indulgence i did not see that coming but it's amazing it's like my little secret we have a we have a um what do you call it um doormat in front of the office that says I hope you like dogs and Taylor Swift like that's what you that's what you need in order to enter the office so is highly recommend my name is Kimberly Burke and I'm a human a teacher and a lover besides chocolate I have um two and that's one is going to the gym i've really become one of those religious religious fanatics about going to the gym which I never dreamed I would ever do um but that's my that's my sanity it keeps me well as sane as I am um I put that above all else sometimes um and the other thing would be I go to bed early and I don't feel
guilty about it about 8:00 I'm I'm wrapping up i'm ready of course I get up
to go to the gym at you know 5:'lock in the morning but uh those are two things that I really are very indulgent for me because I years ago would have stayed up
till 11:00 doing things for the kids or you know someone other than myself and now I just go to bed put on my favorite pajamas and read my book and and it that little bit of me time makes me feel pretty good[Music] let's remember the question what indulgence do you practice to feel good about yourself how difficult was this question for you to answer be honest after you answer this question for yourself think about reaching out to other women in your life for their answers remember to share your answers with us in our 10 women series on Instagram we can't wait to read your answers and speaking of answers we've actually got some different answers on our Instagram page that's because we asked all the women's surprise questions to learn more about them join us on Instagram at 10Women series to hear their answers we hope you will join us every Tuesday for a new episode wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts this series is distributed both as an audio only and a YouTube video format to allow you to enjoy each episode your preferred way be sure to visit our website at www.sassyam.com to learn more about this series and all the places you can find us 10 Women is a production of Sassyam Media amy Brown and Sarah Howard producers feel free to send us an email at sassymdia@gmail.com special thanks to the women of season 1 kimberly Burke Judy Fowler Michelle Horvath Marie Leonard Lyanna Martin Abigail Dun Moses Susan Sassman Abigail Seymour Anne Sparks Bumgardner and Terry Wiggins[Music]
