Hello I AM | Adjusting to the Light | Pastor Jamie Kemp
In John 8:12, Jesus declares, “I am the light of the world.” When Jesus is our light, he leads us out of darkness, guides our steps, and transforms our lives.
1. Understanding Context
- Jesus made this statement during the Feast of Tabernacles, a celebration where large candles were lit to remember how God lead His people with a pillar of fire in the wilderness.
- Jesus was declaring that He is the true Light - He will guide and direct our lives towards salvation.
2. Two Key Truths About Jesus as the Light
- It’s hard to walk without light: Just as physical darkness lead to stumbling, spiritual darkness causes confusion and sin. Jesus is the Light that guides us.
- We are not just walking in the Light, we are walking with the Light: Jesus is God’s presence with us, much like the Tabernacle in the Old Testament. When we accept Him, He “tabernacles” with us.
3. In Jesus, the Kingdom of God has Arrived in both Word and Action
- Jesus not only proclaimed He was the Light but demonstrated it by healing a blind man (John 9:1-7), physically and spiritually restoring him.
- This miracle shows that encountering Jesus brings life-changing transformation.
4. Adjusting to the Light
- Just like our eyes take time to adjust when stepping into bright sunlight, our lives will adjust to Jesus’ light.
- He reveals areas that need change - sinful habits, attitudes, or fears.
- We must allow His light to guide, heal, and transform us.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
- What are some things you are learning about who God is?
- What does it mean for Jesus to be the “Light of the World” in your daily life?
- Have you ever experienced a time when you felt like you were walking in darkness? How did Jesus bring light into that situation?
- In what areas of your life do you feel like you’re still “adjusting to the Light”? How can you allow Jesus to transform those areas?
- Jesus not only spoke about being the Light but demonstrated it through action. How can we reflect His light to those around us?
PRAYER POINT
Are you willing to let the light of Jesus shine in those dark areas of your life?
