Acts 2:1 On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. 2 Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting. 3 Then, what looked like flames or tongues of fire appeared and settled on each of them. 4 And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. 5 At that time there were devout Jews from every nation living in Jerusalem. 6 When they heard the loud noise, everyone came running, and they were bewildered to hear their own languages being spoken by the believers.
The first time the Holy Spirit was poured out on the believers it happened at a time and place where people from all over the world were gathered together. God specifically chose to empower the believers then and immediately gave them the opportunity to proclaim the gospel to people from everywhere. Does that sound like a coincidence? Of course not!
The first Pentecost gives us a glimpse into the Father’s heart, which has always been to bring people close to himself. He has always made a way for humans to meet with him in holy spaces, and at Pentecost, the believers became the place where the presence of God now lives. As we are empowered by the Holy Spirit, that power is for us to walk in authority in our own lives and extend the invitation of salvation to others.
