In our community we have a saying: We are a river, not a lake.

The nature of our community is transitory with people flowing in and flowing out. The same can be true in life; people come and people go. A natural response to this fact would be to isolate, to pull away from community, and to get lost in the nostalgia of what God did in the past. While this sounds tempting, this is not the Lord’s design for our life.

The big truth: There is more…if you want it!

We were designed to grow and mature in our walk with Christ. A healthy relationship with Jesus should be growing and developing, becoming sweeter, deeper, and more life-giving to others as the months and years go by.

Paul called the church in Philippi to grow in 3 ways:

  1. Forgetting the Past
  2. Looking forward to what lies ahead
  3. We press on (and press in)

Read: Luke 5:1-6

One thing that can get in the way of our growth is focusing on our past progress or experiences. Like Peter and Andrew, we can become complacent and comfortable to fish in the shallows, but Jesus is calling us into deeper waters.

Will we respond to his invitation?
