Read: Luke 24:13-34
We conclude our journey through Luke by encountering two ordinary followers of Jesus. They are leaving Jerusalem, traveling the road to Emmaus, when all of the sudden a stranger joins them on their journey. There is something familiar about this man, and when he begins to talk to them about the Scripture, it is as though their hearts burn within their chests.
But it is only after inviting him to their home and sharing a meal together that their eyes are opened and they finally recognize Jesus!
Their journey is a representation of all our journeys.
1. A Revelation: Jesus reveals himself to us. He opens our minds to the Scriptures to show us the true meaning of His Word. Through the lens of the cross and the resurrection, all of Scripture can be understood. It has always pointed towards Jesus. Jesus uses the Bible, friends, family, communities, etc. to bring this revelation to us.
2. An Invitation: Jesus does not force his company on the disciples. As they arrive at their destination, the two disciples invite Jesus to come in and eat with them. And only after receiving this invitation does Jesus enter the house and open their eyes to see him for who He truly is: the Risen Savior. Jesus awaits an invitation from each of us to come into our lives and hearts. When this happens, our eyes are fully opened!
3. A Celebration: Once their eyes are opened, they cannot help but race back to Jerusalem to tell the others! There is something about good news that must be shared with others! When we encounter the Risen Savior, we have to tell others this Good News!
