Read:  John 20:19-23

Following the crucifixion, the disciples were hiding behind locked doors, consumed by fear, shame, and confusion. They felt like failures for abandoning Jesus and were uncertain about their future.

Jesus appeared in their midst and spoke four words that changed everything: "Peace be with you". These words were not just a greeting but a life-changing declaration of His character.

Three Dimensions of God's Peace:

  • Peace is Promised: Jesus offers a "peace with scars". He does not ask believers to pretend everything is okay; rather, He meets people in their disappointment and pain, showing that their wounds do not define them.
  • Peace is Protected: Based on the Hebrew concept of "Shalom Shalom" (Perfect Peace) from Isaiah 26:3, this peace is not circumstantial. It is a guarded, secure peace that transcends understanding and remains steady even in "locked room" situations.
  • Peace is Purchased: This peace came at a high price—the blood and sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Because of this, the hostility between humanity and God is removed, and believers are reconciled as family.

"No Jesus, no peace. Know Jesus, know peace". Even in moments of doubt, Jesus meets us where we are to offer the same resurrection peace.

5 Discussion Questions for Young Adults

  1. In John 20:19, the disciples were meeting behind locked doors because they were afraid. What are some "locked doors" (fears, insecurities, or past failures) that young adults often hide behind today? How does Jesus' appearance in that space change the narrative?
  2. Jesus kept His scars after the resurrection to show that His peace doesn't require us to pretend everything is fine. How does the idea of "peace with scars" change the way you view your own past or current struggles?
  3. The Hebrew language doubles the word for peace to describe "Perfect Peace". Why is it so easy to rely on "circumstantial peace" (finances, relationships, or comfort) instead of this guarded, protected peace?.
  4. Thomas missed the first encounter and struggled to believe until he saw Jesus for himself. How can we support others when someone is in a "Thomas season" of doubt or questions?.
  5. Ephesians 2:13-18 explains that our peace was "purchased" through the cross. How does knowing that your peace was paid for at a high price change the way you "receive" it versus trying to "achieve" it?.
