Holy Spirit | 3 Promises | Pastor Jon Ville Dublan

Read:  Joel 2:28-29 22:33-34, John 14:15-17; 26, Acts 1:8; 2:16-18

One main misconception that a lot of people do not notice is that the Holy Spirit has been with us from the beginning of time. The Holy Spirit did not just show up in the New Testament after Jesus ascended into heaven. In fact, not only the Holy Spirit was in the Old Testament, but the promises of the Holy Spirit is for everyone.

Promise 1: The Holy Spirit’s empowerment: In Joel 2:28-29 The Holy Spirit promises that everyone will be filled and that everyone will be empowered. Men and women, young and old, everyone will be empowered by the Holy Spirit. 

Promise 2: The Holy Spirit’s presence: In John 14:15-17 Jesus promises to His disciples that He will send the Holy Spirit as our paraclete (advisor, counselor, helper). That his disciples and we would not be alone in our walk in following Jesus. That He will never leave us behind.

Promise 3: The Holy Spirit’s partnership: In John 14:26, Jesus tells that the Holy Spirit will partner with us. That He will teach and remind us of everything that we have learned from Jesus. We will be empowered witnesses because it is not just us who is doing the work, but the Holy Spirit wants to partner with you.

And this promise was later fulfilled! In Acts 2:16-18, Peter preaches the same promise from Joel to everyone. That the promises of the Holy Spirit are here and now. All we have to do is receive it. We are all empowered to walk in step with the Holy Spirit because He empowers us, His presence is with us, and He wants to partner with us.

1. What are some of the things that you have learned about the Holy Spirit before this? When you hear Holy Spirit, what comes immediately into your mind?
2. The Holy Spirit wants to empower us. Where do you want to see the Holy Spirit empowerment in your life? (In your witness to your friends, classmates, family, etc?) 
3. The Holy Spirit’s presence is always with us. How have you seen the Holy Spirit work in your life? Or come alongside you?
4. The Holy Spirit wants to partner with us. How do you think that affects the way we live our lives as witnesses to the people around us?
5. What does it mean for you this week to receive the promises of the Holy Spirit? What is one step you will take this week to receive it?
