Jessica:

Hello and welcome to the Ponder and Magnify podcast, where our mission is to seek an encounter with Jesus through praying the rosary, relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary. I am so happy that you are here. In this episode, we're going to be praying the rosary with meditations on the sorrowful mysteries, just like last week. Before each decade, you'll be given something to imagine related to the mystery that we're praying. However, if the Holy Spirit leads your imagination to something different, follow that prompting instead. And as always, I want to just encourage you to take a moment to just pause and reflect on what you're bringing to prayer. What are your joys in this moment? What sorrows feel heavy right now? Do you have any fears? What are you desiring? Who do you wish to pray for? I just encourage you to pause and take stock of all of this so that your prayer can really speak into it. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen, Jesus, we ask you to speak directly into our present circumstances. Mary, thank you for praying with us and for us. Now, Holy Spirit, anoint the gift of our imagination so we might come to encounter Jesus more deeply through it. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen, Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen For an increase in faith. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. For an increase in hope. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen For an increase in love. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen. O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.

Jessica:

The first sorrowful mystery the agony in the garden, a reading from the Gospel of Mark. Jesus said Abba, father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will, but what you will. In his agony, Jesus praises the Father, saying All things are possible to you. Jesus allows room for the Father to make possible what Jesus may have not even imagined. How consoling in our distress that there are many paths to resolution and restoration that exist beyond what we can readily picture. In the midst of our suffering, taking time to praise God, to acknowledge who he is and what he has done for us previously, can pull us out of the mental space of our suffering. Our praise of God is not for God's sake but for our own sake, for in it we realize that we are being held by a loving Father who claims us as His and will bring restoration out of our suffering in one way or another. God is able. As you pray this mystery,

Jessica:

Imagine yourself before the Father praising Him. That is, acknowledging who he is and or what he has done for you previously. Maybe you'll offer a different proclamation of praise with each Hail Mary, or maybe you'll stay focused on one for the whole decade. As you offer this praise, notice the Father's love for you. His delight in you does not change with your praise, but you are the one who has changed Our Father, who art in heaven. Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen, hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen, hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen, hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen, hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Amen.

Jessica:

The Second Sorrowful Mystery, the Scourging at the Pillar, a reading from the Gospel of John. Pilate said to Jesus what is truth? When he said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them I find no guilt in him, but you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? They cried out again Not this one, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a revolutionary. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him scourged In his agony in the garden, Jesus prayed to not have to undergo his suffering, though he trusted the Father in whatever would happen.

Jessica:

In this moment, Barabbas received what Jesus had prayed for while Jesus' suffering intensified. If Jesus were thinking only of himself, it would make sense that Jesus might feel bitter or resentful toward Barabbas or envious. If he were thinking only of himself, Jesus might even resent the Father for the fact that Barabbas got what Jesus himself was desiring. And yet, as a result of his deep union with the Father, we know that Jesus was always thinking of the good of the person in front of him. Because of this, Jesus was completely free of the desire to be preferred. Jesus rejoiced for Barabbas, even though Barabbas got what Jesus had asked for, praying that Barabbas might receive this newfound freedom as a gift from the Father and reform his life.

Jessica:

As you pray this decade, consider a situation where someone else received something that you desired.

Jessica:

Imagine yourself before the Father, who desires to acknowledge your heartbreak in this and hold you in it.

Jessica:

Hear his tender voice assuring you. I have not forgotten you, my precious child. Do not lose sight of what will truly satisfy you. I am offering it to you at every moment, for I love you so much. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Amen, hail Mary full of grace.

Jessica:

The Lord is with thee.

Jessica:

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, jesus.

Jessica:

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

Jessica:

The third sorrowful mystery the crowning with thorns, a reading from the Gospel of Mark. The soldiers led him away inside the palace that is the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort. They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with hail, king of the Jews, and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage and when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes and led him out to crucify him.

Jessica:

Imagine the insults that he heard from the crowd as they attacked those parts of his identity that were most precious to him. If they could convince Jesus that their lies they hurled at him were true, then they could consider themselves justified in their actions. In keeping a deep union with the Father, Jesus' heart was shielded from internalizing all of these lies. With every insult from the crowd. He looked to the Father for truth. Consider where in your life your identity has been attacked by an external source. Consider how this has influenced your internal voice, the way you talk to yourself and see yourself.

Jessica:

As you pray this decade, imagine the arms of Jesus and the Father wrapped around your heart and the Holy Spirit continually rushing around it. This is your shield. Picture the lies that you have allowed yourself to believe being hurled at your heart harder and harder every time they bounce off this shield With every lie and insult. Hear the Father whispering into your heart the truth of your immense dignity and goodness to counteract the attack. Allow His voice to be your influence and His love to be your protection.

Jessica:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Jessica:

Thy kingdom come.

Jessica:

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Jessica:

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Amen, hail Mary full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy, amen.

Jessica:

The fourth sorrowful mystery is the carrying of the cross, a reading from the Gospel of Mark. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes and led him out to crucify him. They pressed into service a passerby, Simon, a Cyrenian who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. They brought him to the place of Golgotha, which is translated place of the skull. They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it.

Jessica:

Jesus experienced the physical pain of the weight of the cross, but interiorly he experienced an even greater pain.

Jessica:

The crushing pain he bore as he carried his cross was the thought of being apart from you for all eternity.

Jessica:

This interior pain stirred him to action, gave him courage to take each next step.

Jessica:

Each moment was offered for you that you might accept the Father's invitation to heaven.

Jessica:

As we pray this decade, see Jesus carrying his cross, see the crowds all around him mocking him, see the soldiers yelling at him, see the blood and sweat falling from him and his legs shaking.

Jessica:

And finally see him looking for you amidst the crowd, with each step, how he longs for the consolation of just making eye contact with you, you, the one he loves, the one for whom he offers this.

Jessica:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Jessica:

Thy kingdom come.

Jessica:

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Jessica:

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Amen Hail Mary, full of grace.

Jessica:

The Lord is with thee.

Jessica:

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen.

Jessica:

The fifth sorrowful mystery is the crucifixion, a reading from the Gospel of John. Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there, whom he loved, he said to his mother Woman, behold your son. Then he said to the disciple, Behold your mother, and from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, aware that everything was now finished in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said I thirst. Jesus died in thirst. This was not a thirst that could be satisfied with a sponge offered to him filled with wine. He died thirsting for the will of the Father, that is, for every soul to come home to heaven. He made this possible in his perfect sacrifice on the cross, but it can only be accomplished by the cooperation of each person's free will, and so his mission continues. This mission is to help awaken souls to the radically gentle and humble love of the Father and the possibility of a life of complete and never-ending satisfaction in him.

Jessica:

As we pray this decade, imagine yourself at the foot of the cross, kneeling down just beneath Jesus, so he can see you without having to lift his head. Hear him telling you about his thirst for souls, starting with his thirst for you. Imagine receiving his words directly into your heart, not your ears. Realize that just in you, receiving him like this, you are already helping his thirst to be satiated. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy. Amen. Hail holy Queen, mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor, banished children of Eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious, advocate thine eyes of mercy toward us and, after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, o holy mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. O God, whose only begotten son, by his life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. Grant we beseech thee that, while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen. My heart is so full from praying with you. What a gift. Count on my continued prayers and please, please pray for us All. Praise be to God.
