Jessica:

Hello and welcome to the Ponder and Magnify podcast, where our mission is to seek an encounter with Jesus through praying the Rosary, relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary. I am so happy that you are here. In this episode, we're going to be praying the Rosary while meditating on the sorrowful mysteries of the rosary. Before each decade, you'll be given something to imagine related to the mystery that we're praying. However, if the Holy Spirit leads your imagination to something different, follow that prompting instead. Before we start, I just want to give you the invitation to pause and to take stock of where you are in this moment. What is bringing you joy right now? What is weighing on you right now? Do you have any fears? What are you desiring? Who do you wish to pray for? I invite you to pause and take a minute to just really bring all of that to the forefront of your mind as we enter into prayer. In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Jesus, we ask you to speak directly into our present circumstances. Mary, thank you for praying with us and for us. Holy Spirit, please anoint the gift of our imagination so that we might come to encounter Jesus more deeply through it. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body and life everlasting. Amen. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen For an increase in faith. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen For an increase in hope. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen For an increase in love. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen, Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be world without end. Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.

Jessica:

The first sorrowful mystery is the agony in the garden, a reading from the Gospel of Mark. Jesus said Abba, father, all things are possible to you. Take this cup away from me, but not what I will, but what you will. In his sorrow and distress, Jesus turns to God, calling him Father. We bring such joy to the heart of God when we call him Father, meaning it fully in our hearts. For when we acknowledge him as Father, we acknowledge his love, his goodness, his tenderness and his desire to work everything toward our good. To call God Father is to trust in him as provider and to acknowledge our need for him. As you pray this mystery, imagine yourself as a little child before the Father. Hear him inviting you to call him Father with such joy and telling you what kind of father he wishes to be to you. Feel his paternal love wash over you, as Jesus did in the garden. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Glory be to the Father and to the son and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be, world without end amen. O my Jesus forgive us our sins save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to Heaven especially those in most need of thy mercy. The second sorrowful mystery is the scourging at the pillar.

Jessica:

A reading from the Gospel of John. Pilate said to Jesus what is truth? When he had said this, he again went out to the Jews and said to them I find no guilt in him, but you have a custom that I release one prisoner to you at Passover. Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews? They cried out again Not this one, but Barabbas!", as Jesus was scourged, his back was literally torn open with blood spilling out. He allowed himself to be completely vulnerable for us.

Jessica:

When we go to pray so often, we try to keep those places of our heart that feel most vulnerable or most wounded closed off from him.

Jessica:

We might experience fear that allowing these parts to be torn open will be too much for us to handle.

Jessica:

It feels safer to ignore them so we can keep it together and keep moving forward.

Jessica:

The devil rejoices in this fear because it prevents us from being healed.

Jessica:

As you pray this decade, imagine Jesus standing before you with the wounds of his scourging.

Jessica:

He invites you to touch these wounds, telling you your touch will not hurt, for I have offered these wounds to the Father and he has glorified them. They have become channels of grace for the world. They can no longer hurt me. See what is possible for your own wounds. Do not be afraid. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Amen Hail Mary, full of grace.

Jessica:

The Lord is with thee.

Jessica:

Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.

Jessica:

The Third Sorrowful Mystery the Crowning of Jesus with thorns, a reading from the Gospel of Mark. The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort. They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with Hail, king of the Jews and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage and when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes and led him out to crucify him.

Jessica:

Jesus had to maintain such a presence of mind in his suffering in order to not be consumed by it, to resist giving into resentment, bitterness or self-pity. His union with the Father gave him every strength in this. Internally, he was in constant dialogue with the Father, continually offering the Father his most prized intention for the salvation of every soul, receiving from the Father over and over again, love, affirmation and assurance. As Jesus was receiving mocks and blows externally, internally, he and the Father were relishing in their time together, imagining together the glory of heaven filled with every soul. What joy this brought Jesus in the midst of his suffering, so that both joy and suffering existed simultaneously.

Jessica:

As you pray this decade, imagine discussing with Jesus your most prized intentions. Where do you or someone you love most need restoration, healing and the love of God? Let Jesus guide your imagination to picture the fullness of that restoration and healing happening in heaven. Try to see all the details of it played out and allow your heart to feel the joy of these imaginings. Allow this image to coexist with whatever suffering you are experiencing currently.

Jessica:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. Amen. Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen. Amen, o my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.

Jessica:

The fourth sorrowful mystery Jesus carries his cross, a reading from the Gospel of Mark. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes and led him out to crucify him. They pressed into service a passerby, simon, a Cyrenian who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. They brought him to the place of Golgotha, which is translated place of the skull. They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it. Jesus was struggling under the weight of his cross. Instead of trying to hide it from the crowd, he allowed his struggle to be known and welcomed the assistance of Simon. It is possible that if Jesus had not accepted the help, he would have died before making it to the crucifixion, where the love of God was most glorified. Scripture gives us the detail that Simon was the father of Alexander and Rufus. Perhaps this note about Simon's fatherhood was meant to point to the Heavenly Father. God the Father was sustaining Jesus through Simon's assistance.

Jessica:

As we pray this decade, consider a current suffering in your life.

Jessica:

From whom do you try to hide this suffering?

Jessica:

Are you willing to accept help in it?

Jessica:

At every moment, the Father is trying to provide for you and sustain you in your suffering, even if you are continually rejecting Him.

Jessica:

As we pray, consider the moments or the people through whom the Father is trying to extend His love to you in your present suffering.

Jessica:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Jessica:

Thy kingdom come.

Jessica:

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Jessica:

Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Hail Mary, full of grace.

Jessica:

The Lord is with thee.

Jessica:

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, jesus.

Jessica:

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Jessica:

Save us from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy, amen.

Jessica:

The fifth sorrowful mystery is the crucifixion of Jesus, a reading from the Gospel of John. Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister, Mary, the wife of Clopas, and Mary of Magdala. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there, whom he loved, he said to his mother Woman, behold your son. Then he said to the disciple Behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, aware that everything was now finished in order that the scripture might be fulfilled, Jesus said I thirst.

Jessica:

Mary, the mother of Jesus, was able to remain at the foot of the cross, taking in the unimaginable suffering of the one she loved the most, and yet not fall into despair. How? Mary was she who believed that what was spoken to her by the Lord would be fulfilled. Prior to this moment, while he was still alive and well, Jesus had warned his followers that this would happen. He would suffer, be killed and then rise on the third day. Mary believed Jesus' word would be fulfilled. He would rise, and, although this didn't take away her great pain in witnessing the passion of her son. It did give her confidence that the pain of it would be temporary.

Jessica:

Consider how, in our suffering, the devil tries to tempt us into doubting God's promise or getting so caught up in our own pain that we forget the promise altogether.

Jessica:

As we pray this mystery, imagine Jesus at the foot of your cross as you feel the weight of your suffering. Hear him telling you over and over again. You will rise from this. Allow it to penetrate more and more deeply into your heart each time he says it. See how the devil shudders as you receive his word into your heart. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us and lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

Jessica:

Amen Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Jessica:

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Jessica:

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Jessica:

Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Jessica:

Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.

Jessica:

Amen Hail Mary, full of grace.

Jessica:

Hail Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry poor banished children of eve. To thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus. o clement, o loving, o sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, o Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. Grant we beseech thee that, while meditating on these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ, our Lord. Amen. I'm so thankful for this time of prayer with you. Count on my continued prayers and please, please, pray for us. Praise be to God.
