Hello and welcome to the Ponder and Magnify Podcast, where our mission is to seek an encounter with Jesus through praying the rosary, relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary. I am so happy that you are here. In this episode, we're going to be praying the rosary while meditating on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Before each decade, you'll be given something to imagine related to the mystery we're praying. However, if the Holy Spirit leads you somewhere different as you're praying, please follow that prompting instead. Before we start, let's pause and reflect on what we're bringing to prayer. What are your joys in this moment? What sorrows are you feeling right now? Do you have any fears in this moment? What are you desiring? Whom do you wish to pray for? In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven. He is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting, amen. The first Joyful Mystery is the Annunciation, a reading from the Gospel of Luke. And the angel said to her in reply, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the most high will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God, for nothing will be impossible for God. Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word. At the Annunciation, Jesus comes to dwell in Mary. How amazing that Mary offers God both safety and nourishment within her own body. How amazing that Jesus' sacred heart is literally formed within her. However, Mary did not make herself a fit home for Jesus by her own striving. It is God Himself that did this. Gabriel explains to Mary at the Annunciation that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the power of the Most High will overshadow her. She receives the Holy Spirit, who then prepares her for Jesus. Consider where in your life you might be striving to prove yourself instead of simply receiving from God. As we pray this decade, imagine yourself in a position of rest, simply allowing the Father to look at you. See on his face the utter delight you bring to him in just being still before him. When he looks at you, he sees the beauty with which he created you. He sends the Holy Spirit, the embodiment of his healing love to rest on you and illuminate this beauty. The Second Joyful Mystery is the Visitation, a reading from the Gospel of Luke. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, and how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy. Jesus' presence is completely hidden in this mystery. He cannot be seen. He is too young for Mary to feel him kick within her. And yet the effect of Jesus' presence is known. Joy. John the Baptist leaps for joy at the presence of Jesus. Joy feels like happiness, but its source is different from happiness. Happiness is fleeting, dependent on external circumstances. Joy comes from a trust that the Lord is present and taking care of everything. Joy is possible through every circumstance. Consider in your life where you are longing for happiness right now. As we pray this decade, imagine sitting beside Jesus looking into this area of your life. See his face fill with delight at you inviting him to this place. Jesus desires to give you joy, a greater good than happiness in this area of your life. Allow him to tell you what it would look like to live in joy in this area. A reading from the Gospel of Luke and Joseph too went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth to Judea, to the city of David that is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. While they were there, the time came for her to have her child, and she gave birth to her first born son. She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. With no room at the inn and a manger as a bed, Jesus was born into poverty. From his very entrance into the world he shows he is not deterred by lack, because he brings abundance to all things. He wishes to enter those areas of our lives where we feel a lack of love or a lack of security or a sense of poverty in some way. Revisit in your imagination a scene from your life characterized by one of these a lack of love, a lack of security or a sense of poverty in some way. See what was happening and how you were feeling. As we pray this decade, imagine yourself in the midst of that scene with Mary setting up a manger for Jesus to rest, preparing a home for Jesus there. Where you feel discomfort, hear Mary assure you, this is where the Father wills Jesus to enter the world. He comes to save. The Fourth Joyful Mystery is the Presentation, a reading from the Gospel of Luke. And Simeon blessed Mary and Joseph and said to Mary his mother, Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted, and you yourself a sword will pierce, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed. At the same time that Simeon announces the good news that the salvation that God has prepared for all people will come through Jesus, he also announces that both Jesus and his mother will suffer as this comes to fruition. The source of this suffering is that Jesus will be contradicted and rejected by some. This, of course, is what eventually leads to Jesus' crucifixion, where Jesus experiences immense physical suffering, and Mary's heart is pierced with pain witnessing the suffering of her child. These sufferings, however, are temporary, to be relieved in heaven. The hearts of both Mary and Jesus experience the greatest suffering at the thought of any one of God's children rejecting the salvation offered to them. This suffering becomes the motivation for all they do. As we pray this decade, see Mary and Jesus before you in their anguish over the state of souls, longing so desperately for every person to be saved. What is your response to this? The Fifth Joyful Mystery is the finding of Jesus in the temple. A reading from the Gospel of Luke When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety. And he said to them, Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my father's house? But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them, and his mother kept all these things in her heart. After searching for Jesus for three days in great suffering, Mary understandably asks for an explanation from Jesus. Instead of getting an explanation from him, he simply goes with her. How often in our suffering do we assume relief will come from an explanation for why we must endure the suffering? In this mystery we are reminded of the truth that peace in the midst of suffering comes not from an explanation, but from remaining attuned to Jesus' presence within our suffering. Consider in your life an area of present suffering. As we pray this decade, imagine a scene involving your present suffering. See Jesus there with you, beside you, holding your hand. O Clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. Grant we beseech thee that by meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, that we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.
