Hello and welcome to the Ponder and Magnify Podcast, where our mission is to seek an encounter with Jesus through praying the rosary, relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary. I am so happy that you are here. In this episode, we're going to be praying the rosary while meditating on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Before each decade, you'll be given something to imagine related to the mystery we're praying. However, if the Holy Spirit leads you somewhere different as you're praying, please follow that prompting instead. Before we start, let's pause and reflect on what we're bringing to prayer. What are your joys in this moment? What sorrows are you feeling right now? Do you have any fears in this moment? What are you desiring? Whom do you wish to pray for? In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Jesus, we ask you to speak directly into our present circumstances. Mary, thank you for praying with us and for us now. Holy Spirit, please anoint the gift of our imagination so that we might come to encounter Jesus more deeply through it. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. The First Joyful Mystery is the Annunciation, a reading from the Gospel of Luke. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. Behold you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her. It may seem odd that Gabriel does not ask Mary's permission to be the mother of Jesus as a question. Instead he says "Behold" and simply states the plan. But Mary had completely surrendered herself over to God's will already at this point. Her heart was open to what the Father wanted, ready to accept from him his plan for her with childlike trust. Her joy came from imagining doing whatever God asked of her for the sake of his kingdom, rather than in planning her own way. And so the Father, knowing this posture of her heart, simply states the plan to Mary through Gabriel. Mary's response, "May it be done to me according to your word", was not novel. This was how she always responded to the Father even prior to this moment, always open to his plan. She had submitted to him in many small ways leading up to this, and so her heart was already prepared for this request. Consider the plans you have for your life at this moment, whether it be something in the long term or short term. As we pray this decade, picture yourself laying these plans down at the feet of Jesus in complete surrender. Feel Mary take your hand and encourage you. "Do not be afraid. My son is worthy of your trust, designing everything for your eternal joy. If he chooses another way, it will be for even greater beauty than what you have imagined." Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The Second Joyful Mystery is the Visitation, a reading from the Gospel of Luke. And the angel said to Mary in reply, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the most high will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren, for nothing will be impossible for God." Mary said, Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord, may it be done to me according to your word. Then the angel departed from her. It is clear from what Gabriel speaks to Mary at the Annunciation that God's activity in the life of Elizabeth is meant to be a source of affirmation to Mary of the power of God. The miracle of John the Baptist's conception in Elizabeth's old age is then meant to be a gift not just for Elizabeth, but for Mary too. God gifts each of us uniquely as a unique demonstration of his power. The gifts he gives to us then are not just for our own sake, but to encourage others to greater faith. The devil tempts us to look at another's gifts in comparison to ours. God wishes us to recognize another's gifts and turn to faith that he will work in our life as well. As we pray this decade, ask God what unique gift he has given to you within your life circumstances, that he intends to be encouragement for others to greater faith in His power. A reading from the Gospel of John In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God, but all things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Jesus was born into a time of desperation for his people. The Israelite people had turned to sin of every kind, and it led to their ruin. They were scattered and longing for something more. God desired to enter their darkness and bring light to it, to satisfy their longings and set them free for a life of wholeness. Consider where in your life you feel clouded by darkness. Do not be afraid of the weight of this circumstance. Instead, allow it to well up within you a longing to be saved. As we pray this decade, imagine yourself approaching the manger with that longing. See the infant Jesus radiant with heavenly light reaching out to you to heal and redeem it all, to offer abundance where there is lack. His light is more powerful than your present darkness. Just keep looking toward him. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The Fourth Joyful mystery is the Presentation of Jesus in the Temple. A reading from the Gospel of Luke, Simeon came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to perform the custom of the law in regard to him, he took him into his arms and blessed God, saying, "Now, master, you may let your servant go in peace according to your word, for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you prepared in the sight of all the peoples, a light for the revelation to Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel." The child's father and mother were amazed at what was said about him. Mary and Joseph were already aware that Jesus was Son of the Most High, that he was the promised Messiah. Yet when Simeon, filled with the Holy Spirit, announced Jesus was "God's promise of salvation to all people", Scripture tells us Mary and Joseph were amazed. Even Jesus' parents, who knew Jesus most intimately, stood to be further amazed by who Jesus was. The depth of knowledge of Jesus and relationship with Jesus is inexhaustible. There is always more. As we pray this decade, imagine Simeon holding Jesus' Sacred Heart before you, inviting you to look more deeply into it in light of your present circumstances. What is it that you see? Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, they will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The Fifth Joyful Mystery is the Finding of Jesus in the Temple. A reading from the Gospel of Luke. When his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my father's house?" But they did not understand what he said to them. He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them, and his mother kept all these things in her heart. Scripture tells us that in this mystery, Mary and Joseph could not understand Jesus. How often are we too faced with an inability to understand someone, how oftentimes those right in our own families. So often our misunderstanding leads to division. Yet, in the case of the Holy Family, in the midst of misunderstanding, they moved forward together as a unit to Nazareth. In this mystery, we are reminded of the truth that we can still love the person whom we cannot understand. Consider a relationship in your life where misunderstanding dominates. As we pray this decade, imagine this person standing before you and Jesus beside you. Ask Jesus to help you see this person as He does, with a longing for their salvation. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O Clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, O holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen. O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. Grant we beseech thee that by meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may both imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord.
