Hello and welcome to the Ponder and Magnify Podcast, where our mission is to seek an encounter with Jesus through praying the Rosary, relying on the grace of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of Mary. I am so happy that you are here. In this episode, we're going to be praying the Rosary while meditating on the Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary. Before each decade, you'll be given something to imagine related to the mystery we're praying. However, if the Holy Spirit leads you somewhere different as you're praying, please follow that prompting instead. Before we start, let's pause and reflect on what we're bringing to prayer. What are your joys in this moment? What sorrows are you feeling right now? Do you have any fears in this moment? What are you desiring? Whom do you wish to pray for? In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen. Jesus, we ask you to speak directly into our present circumstances. Mary, thank you for praying with us and for us now. Holy Spirit, please anoint the gift of our imagination so that we might come to encounter Jesus more deeply through it. I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again from the dead, he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty, from there he shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting, amen. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. A reading from the Gospel of Luke. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary, and coming to her he said, "Hail favored one, the Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said, and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary." How strange it must have been for Mary to have an angel appear all of the sudden and greet her in the way that Gabriel did. How understandable that Mary was troubled and afraid. And yet, God's plan for the salvation of the world hinged upon Mary being able to step out of her fear. How does God calm her? In a great act of tenderness, he has Gabriel speak Mary's name in the words "Do not be afraid, Mary." In these words, Mary understood that God was looking right into her heart at that moment, for she had not mentioned her fear aloud, and looking right into her heart, the Father calls her by name. She is known by him. Consider where in your life is an area that fear is dominating right now. As we pray this decade, imagine the Father looking into this place in your life and understanding you completely without you having to explain yourself. Hear him say to you with such tenderness, do not be afraid. Hear him call you by name. You are fully known in this place, and he will show himself as provider. The Second Joyful Mystery is the Visitation, a reading from the Gospel of Luke. When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the infant leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, cried out in a loud voice and said, "Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, and how does this happen to me that the mother of my Lord should come to me?" Prior to visiting Elizabeth, Gabriel appeared to Mary, Mary was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, and Jesus was conceived within Mary. These were major life events for Mary that had likely not fully set in yet. Mary was likely still in need of processing. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit, affirms Jesus' presence within Mary without Mary even having to explain herself. What a blessing to Mary after all she had been through. The Holy Spirit helps us to see Jesus' presence in all circumstances and all people. Consider if there is a person or circumstance where you are needing help to see Jesus' presence. As we pray this decade, ask the Holy Spirit to help you see Jesus there. Allow the reality of Jesus' presence to shape your perspectives and behaviors. A reading from the Gospel of Matthew. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, Magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." After their audience with the king they set out, and behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing the star, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The Magi from the East were not Israelites, they were not raised in the faith, they did not have a rich relationship with the God that introduced himself first to the Israelite people. In fact, they did not know God at all, and yet they were called forth to the Savior, not forgotten. Consider someone in your life for whom you are longing to know Jesus more. Realize that this longing for this person to know Jesus' love is a participation in Jesus' yearning for every soul. As we pray this decade, imagine Jesus leaving heaven to enter Mary's womb with this person in his heart and mind. Allow yourself to feel the consolation of Jesus' desperate love for this person. He will not allow them to be forgotten. See this person making it to the manger and prostrating themselves like the magi who at one time did not know God. Rest and rejoice in this hope. The Fourth Joyful Mystery is the presentation of Jesus in the Temple. A reading from the Gospel of Luke. When the days were completed for their purification, according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord, just as it is written in the law of the Lord, every male that opens the womb shall be consecrated to the Lord, and to offer the sacrifice of a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons in accordance with the dictate in the law of the Lord. In the presentation ritual, parents offered their child to God in surrender, acknowledging that their child belonged to God before belonging to them. In most cases, the parents then ransomed the child back with an offering to God, which in the case of Mary and Joseph was two birds. So the day of the presentation, Mary and Joseph entered the temple with Jesus, their Son and Savior, and two birds, unsure of exactly what would happen. Perhaps the idea crossed Mary and Joseph's mind that they would offer Jesus to God and he would not return home with them, given who he was. Mary and Joseph surrendered that which was most precious to them over to God, not knowing what would happen. What followed made Mary and Joseph appreciate and understand their original gift even more deeply. Consider in your life what is most precious to you. As you pray this decade, imagine yourself setting down that which is most precious to you at the foot of the altar of church in complete surrender to God. See Mary and Jesus come and take up your gift and hear them discuss it with such love of you. What new insight can you gain about what you laid down? The Fifth Joyful mystery is the finding of Jesus in the Temple. A reading from the Gospel of Luke. When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, "Son, why have you done this to us? Your father and I have been looking for you with great anxiety." And he said to them, "Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be in my father's house?" Jesus sees Mary and Joseph's deep anxiety and responds in a way as to say, "Why are you anxious? Didn't you trust that the Father would be caring for me?" Perhaps he said this in an effort to offer relief to Mary and Joseph. Jesus was being held by the Father at every moment. So Mary and Joseph didn't have to strive to control the course of events. They could trust Jesus was being provided for even when they had no control over his circumstances. Consider a circumstance in your life where you feel worried about the course of events or a future outcome. As we pray this decade, imagine Mary and Jesus with you. Feel Jesus rest his hand on your back, and Mary hold your hand, as together they invite your heart to rest. Hear Jesus speak to you, "Our Father will take care of everything", and see Mary nod with encouragement. Turn then, Most Gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us, and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O Clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary, pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. O God, whose only begotten Son, by his life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life, grant we beseech thee that by meditating upon these mysteries of the most holy rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise through the same Christ our Lord.
