• Stress at its core is resistance to what is
• The task is learning how to get in right relationship with reality
• Two key elements for acceptance: awareness of your resistance patterns and cultivating peace
• Peace and stress cannot coexist—when you're peaceful, there's no stress
• Examine your beliefs that create lack of acceptance
• Identify patterns in your moments of greatest suffering
• Acceptance requires releasing rigid concepts of how things "should be"

Hello and welcome to Roots of the Rise. With me, sarah Hope. You need two things in order to gain the most out of any inquiry into acceptance. Let's talk about those and more today as we journey into contemplating one of the most out of any inquiry into acceptance. Let's talk about those and more today as we journey into contemplating one of the most fundamental pillars of living a peaceful life there is.

Speaker 1:

Acceptance is not just for those on the spiritual path or interested in self-development. On the spiritual path or interested in self-development, it has a direct relationship to our health. I mean, what is stress at its core? It's when we resist. What is when we aren't able to accept. Lack of acceptance is the root of all suffering. How many times have you thought to yourself this isn't the way it should be. This isn't fair. I don't want it to be like this or some version of that.

Speaker 1:

The task is to learn how to get in right relationship with reality. When we try to insist that the world should be the way we want it to be, we set ourselves up for stress and all the physical and mental implications it brings. In order to open to what is, we need to release our concepts of what should be, and the way to do this is to give up the mind's insistence that it knows best and switch to learning how to love what is and trust that everything is unfolding exactly as it should. As I mentioned, you need two things in order to gain the most out of any inquiry into acceptance. The first is simply awareness. You need to understand and recognize how you work with reality or don't. How do you respond to stress? What triggers stress for you? What beliefs do you have that creates it in your life? Secondly, you need to nurture the part of yourself that experiences the opposite of stress peace. Think about it.

Speaker 1:

One of the most common ways of saying we fully accept something is to say I'm at peace with it. Think about what happens when you're feeling peaceful. Maybe this is easy for you to tap into, maybe not, but right now, think about the last time you felt at least a little peaceful, a little relaxed. Maybe you snuggled into bed after a long day and heaved a big sigh of relief. Or it's first thing in the morning, while you have your cup of coffee before anyone else is up. Or maybe it was 10 years ago, while you stood on the beach during the last vacation you took. Just recall that moment and sit in it for a few breaths. When you're in that space, is there any stress? No Stress can exist while you're standing strong in peace. This is why we say I'm at peace when we speak of truly accepting something.

Speaker 1:

Cultivation of this ability to experience peace within ourselves is necessary so that we can turn up the volume on it whenever we find ourselves sliding into stress. We're actually going to talk a lot more about how to cultivate peace within ourselves when we talk about self-care routines starting on Friday and that actually all of next week, so stay tuned for that. But bringing it back into acceptance and this idea of okay, both being really aware of what creates stress and resistance to what is within ourselves and also cultivating peace. You know, this can be a really big ask for most of us.

Speaker 1:

Before you get into peace, or can get into peace whenever you want, you typically need to move through the foundational process of recognizing your own unique challenges to being able to accept anything and everything in your life. What are your beliefs that create the most stress in your life? What are you believing to be true? That is creating a lack of acceptance for you? So, to that end.

Speaker 1:

Here are some questions for you to consider today. What does suffering look like to you? When are the times in your life you have suffered the most, when you have been in most and greatest resistance to what's happening? What caused the suffering? What were you unable to accept at the time, or maybe even still? And, importantly, are there any through lines here when you think about the three biggest things that you have been unable to move past or that you continue to resist in your life? Are there any similarities? Are there any connections between them? Just see what comes up as you think about these questions.

Speaker 1:

We will return to acceptance many times in this podcast. So this is just the very beginning, the tip of the iceberg, of us exploring this topic, but it's a good place to start to just simply recognize what are the things that we resist the most in our lives, what are the things that we think often this is not the way it should be.
