Herm's House Podcast - The One Where We Lost Gordy: Sending One to College, Chasing Another Down a River

After a whirlwind few weeks of travel, concerts, road trips, college orientation, baseball, floating rivers, and realizing we’re definitely not as young as we used to be, we’re back with another chaotic life update.

This episode takes us from a VIP experience with rap legend Juvenile in Las Vegas to helping our oldest daughter prepare for college life at Texas State University. Along the way, we accidentally lose Gordy on a river float, survive a family road trip through Texas, revisit the Alamo, and continue learning what it means to navigate parenting in two completely different stages of life at the same time.

Yeah, well, um we've had some more travel in, and it makes it makes it really hard to travel with all the kids um and remember to bring like our podcast stuff, and we never do.

On vacation at the hotel, and it's gonna be so cool. And then we never do.

We never do. We should I mean, like, just record with our phones like video stuff, but I just forgot. Get too busy. Like, I just get too busy.

Mostly. No, I think it's just I am very much so and always have been like living the moment. I really hate taking video. I really hate stopping and taking pictures.

And I feel awkward too to do it.

Well, I just I don't feel awkward to do it. I just don't like to do it because I want to like be in the moment. Like when we are at concerts and when we're at like the kids' activities, we're doing things, and you're just people with their phones and recording. I feel like you're experiencing it through the little screen on your phone. Like you're not truly experiencing where what you're at or what you're doing.

The only way that that happens for me is like when we're at Mariano's games or any of the kids' games and I'm recording him specifically because I have to look at him through my screen so that I can follow, follow, follow, follow, follow catches the ball.

If we're at a concert and I have my phone up, I'm usually I I I get the best and then I'm like, let's go. Let's go.

Yeah, I just I always have been like that. I know like people like my mom, like, oh record it for me. Like, make sure you're recording. And I'm like, Yeah, no, I don't want to. Um, I'm not good at it at like sporting tips. Like I think we've talked about it. Sure, but not good about like recording because I'm cheering or jumping or yelling and like not following, like you're following my talk about.

I'm just like, I've gotten really good at it.

But that's just another thing is like I would rather be in the moment watching whatever event is happening, like being present or whatever. And then I have to oh take a picture of this or oh do.

I feel like I'm super present. I got my phone and I'm sitting here like this, and I'm like, go boy, go boy, let's go! And I'm not, I'm cheering and I'm excited, but my screen is still just yeah, I don't I can't. I don't know.

I just I've always been like that, even back like back in the day when we had the actual cameras and stuff. Like, I just love I I would rather be in the moment, and that is just me, and that's why it's a struggle to be like a podcaster or uh influencer of any type. Because I forget and I was really good at it for a while because I think I was just bored with like work and stuff.

Um, maybe probably. Uh, but now I'm like, okay, like all the events we're talking about, all the travel we're on. I had to like remember take pictures or do this. And I mean, I got I get some, but I just don't feel like I capture you know what?

That's why I like going with certain people like Serena or Marissa or even Ron and Kelly, because they're like, oh, we gotta get a picture of this. And they're the ones taking pictures. And I'm like, tag me, send me that joint because yes.

Yeah, I almost need someone like to go with us just to like take pictures.

You never know. Yeah. But speaking of taking pictures, documenting concerts and whatnot, we got to go to one of the coolest, well, at least, you know, 14-year-old me would have been like, Are you serious?

Concerts this past couple weeks, uh, about 10 days ago-ish, we went and got to go see uh a juvenile. And when we went to go see like we didn't just go see, can we just like like explain to the audience who juvenile is?

Because I'm gonna take I mean every I think a lot of people mainstream will know the song, the main like song my that he came out with just because I would unfortunately confuse like I know music, but I'm really bad at artists' names or song titles and things like that. So when you said juvenile, I was like, what does he sing? But once you told me what he sang, I was like, that's him.

So that we don't get, you know, so the FCC doesn't come after us. I'll only do a couple lyrics of these. Um uh back that A Up. Um Back That Booty Up. Yeah, so it's cash money records taking over for the 9-9 in the 2000, which again I said 14-year-old me would have been like, let's go. Yeah, lost the mind. And any other millennial out there gear is was like, wow.

Well, and I think too uh the late like reels have made this song come back big time, yeah, big time because it's us making the reels and sure, it's other kids.

Uh another big song that he had was number one stunna. Yeah, yeah, number one stunner, but what what but um yeah, and slow motion for me, slow motion for me, do with slow motion for me. A lot of great songs. He's got a few new songs, which you know Well, that was the whole point of the concert. He's a tour for his new album.

For his new album, which was good. Like I, like I said, with I like all kinds of music. I love live music, so being in a live concert always, I don't care what kind of live music it is.

I mean, care a little bit. I wouldn't say rap is at my top, like at the list of music I listen to, but some of these songs were so good.

I was like, and let's be fair, the crowd, the crowd next to us, especially that one young lady, I don't know how young she was, but she was every ounce of her body was moving to like every song, and I was just like, okay, she was not going slow motion for you. I just don't know that because she was just going nuts. She was going at it.

No, I mean it was a great time. I had so much fun. The music was great. Um, we were like, it was what was the place we were at? It was like a bowling alley. Brooklyn Bowl. Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas. We were in Las Vegas. We went all the way to Vegas to see Juvie.

It's right next to that gigantic Ferris wheel, the the high roller is what's the first time. High roller just learned because we went on it. Yeah. Um, and it was a walking distance from the the high roller. Yeah. It was great.

But the story walking distance from where we're at too, because we were at Harris.

So, like the the the venue was super nice. We got VIP tickets, so we were on the second level. Like, we didn't have to worry about the big crowd, which was nice. We kind of had our own space. We were right on the balcony level. Like, it was so cool. Just the concert part of it. Yes. But there's more.

The experience of it, the whole purpose. Like, don't get me wrong, I'm I like Juvenile, but that's not like not somebody I wouldn't go seek him out or really any rapper. I I just I wouldn't do a lot of rap shows. I love country music. Um, and even though I grew up um listening to and watching, you know, um rap and like Eminem and all those guys, not really on my list to be like, let's go watch the concert. Even when we went to the ludicrous concert last year or whatever it was, I was like, I I mean, I'll go, sure, it's fine, you know. And it wasn't a big deal. My neighbor, uh, Mr. Ron, shout out, subwood, um, is friends with juvenile. Shockingly. Um, he he's not a guy that comes off that you're like, that's a rap fan, for sure. He's more of a guy that, like, you know, he's definitely gonna drop his kid off at soccer practice. And um he makes custom dominoes, and that's just kind of how he got into this world. Hashtag billet bones billet bones.

Yeah, great, amazing dominoes. They're they're and he makes them by hand. It's yeah, you know, it's ridiculous. Well, with all that said, he's sold these sets of dominoes to multiple artists, athletes, actors, just I mean, so many. He'll always come up with a new oh, I sold to that guy. I'm like, how do you know Reggie Miller? Like, it's unbelievable. Juvenile was one of the guys. Well, Juvenile had happened to be somebody him and his wife, like, made friends with Juvenile and his wife. And they literally would like go to dinner together and hang out. And it had nothing to do with the music or even the business itself, they just became friends. So we found out he was coming to Las Vegas and he hit him up, like, hey, we'd like to go. We're gonna buy tickets to the show. We'd like to meet up with you guys if we couldn't possibly like, you know, get some backstage passes or whatever, just so we can go say hi and whatever. And uh his his wife was like, Shadonna. Shadonna was like, Absolutely, yeah, what? Of course. And he's like, Well, we got our neighbor with us. You guys will love them, they're great. Um, you know, they're gonna come too if that's all right with you. She's like, absolutely. So we went to the show, they went first downstairs, um, and we stayed upstairs. I got one beer for the night because I'm like, I'm about to sing juvenile, y'all. Like, I'm not sitting here trying to get messed up and like, you know, I'm trying to remember this show. I want to, I want to be a part of this show. Like, I want every ounce of it. His son, Young Jew, uh, opens the show. Yeah, young Jew. Um, he's in his early 20s, uh, mid-20s. But I mean, you know, he a lot of music that I have no idea, like none, but sounded good.

I mean, he had he was an entertainer, like he was out there, he was working in the audience. I it was so funny, like, because I was watching it from like a mom's point of view, right? Like I was, I was like, oh my god, I was so proud. Like, it's his kid, like mom's out there cheering, they're watching their son, like opening up for your dad. Like, I looked at it as a mom point of view, and I was just I felt like a proud mom watching him on stage.

Oh my gosh, it was so great. And he did so well, and it was so good. And I like they were saying, Um, I think Ron had talked to them, and I guess he was getting over some kind of like illness. Right. So even with like that, you couldn't even tell. Like, he did so he did such a good job performing.

He really did, and it was a lot of fun to watch him do that, open it up and and get the crowd going, and the DJ was getting the crowd going, and it was a lot of fun. Um, it was an older crowd. Let's be fair.

It was an us crowd, you know what I mean? 30s.

30s, uh, maybe even 50s, you know what I mean? Um, but I love that because it wasn't real.

We're not just saying uh older, we'll just say our age crowd, and anybody can just say or guess what it is, and that's what it is.

I'm 40. So um it was it was great because like people behaved oh yeah, it was crazy. Did it get everybody was trying to fight? Yeah, like everybody was just there listening, and then people like were dancing crazy and twerking and doing all that kind of stuff, but nobody was being disrespectful, nobody was being too drunk, nobody was like, it was it was just a good time. We had a great time. And Ron comes and meets us back right before Juvie goes out onto the the stage to to perform. And um, he goes, Yo, as soon as Back That Thing Up comes on, as soon as it starts, we're gonna make our way back to the the side stage so we can go back there. And I was like, Okay, yeah, well, that sounds awesome. So we go, and sure enough, you can hear the the the way it's and you're just like, there it is, there it is. Yeah, and as soon as he slaps him on the shoulder, he's like, Let's go, and we just walk our way down, go to security.

Well, we got to watch it from the side, yeah.

And the the balcony, it it was like a wraparound balcony all the way to the top, so you could see it from whatever angle you were at. Um, and you you know, we sit down and watched it from the bottom, and you could just see the crowd because we had a different uh view of the crowd from this, because now we're like in front of them, and you could see everybody, and that's the song everybody's waiting for because that was the number one song. It was just it was it was so much fun.

And I love watching it too, just like seeing the performer, right? The artist actually doing their job, doing their work up there on stage. Like that's my favorite part. Like seeing the DJ scene, they had a drummer, like it was so cool just to see the art being performed, being done. Right. That's like my favorite part of any kind of performance, any kind of artistry, like all that stuff. I love seeing the behind the scenes, I love seeing how it gets put together and all that. Because I know how much work goes into it. I mean, the the work that we have to do alone for this podcast and get it presented and performed and you know, things like that. Like to put on a show and like to go out there, sing your music, and it's you could tell it's he loves it. He had just gotten like surgery or something on his foot.

So he came out on a boot, but to still be out there, still doing your thing, like it was a blast. It wasn't moving around too. No, no, no, yeah, yeah. But it was great. I mean, it was just amazing to watch and see it being done.

My boy's 50 years old, you know what I mean? Like 51 now. So yeah.

It's a little harder to walk at those ages. Especially at post-surgery. Um, after that, the the security guard, he would like Ron went and told him, and he kind of like flashed his badge or whatever, and he's like, Yeah, you know, like they're with me. We did the whole freaking Wayne's world.

Yeah. Um, and then yeah, we go, they take us um into like the green room, we walk upstairs. There's his wife, his brother, who was actually helping him perform. He did the the features on on the songs that other artists would have done, but you know, he he just he did his name's Corey. Dude was legit, Cowboys fan. Shout out. Um, and then we met his son, his son was out there and he said what's up to everybody. And then they had a few other friends that were there. And we're just sitting there drinking water, hanging out. It was so cool. He comes out and chats with us for a little bit. And I mean, after that, like, all right, well, let's let's go. We went gambling and did all the things.

But I think it was like cool because it just, I mean, I've always I I haven't really when I see meet celebrities or things like that, like I don't get that like the hype and the, you know, I mean like I I always just see them as like normal people. It's just so cool to me to see them in a different element and to see how just chill, I mean, and I mean, especially like Juvie and Shadana, they were so amazing, like like talking to them and the stories. Yeah, and like getting to talk to Shadonna, like I love talking to her the most, yeah. And just hearing like the back, the background of like, oh, now we're gonna travel here, we're gonna go do this, and we're gonna make sure he has that. And she was like running the show, like making sure people had this or making sure they were gonna get it, get this for juvenile. Like, she was like the wife and like managing, it was so cool to watch. I loved seeing that and just seeing how she was, and yeah, it was like like so cool. I'm like, I want TV your friend, yeah, or the juvenile because juvenile's cool too. They became so humble. Became and introduced and like laughed at your jokes, and like it was cool, but I was like, I just want to hang out with it.

I didn't want to like I didn't want to be too funny, you know, you know what I'm saying? Like, you know how I am, I get and I crack jokes at everybody. Like and I find there's things that he said, and I was just like, Yeah, I'm just gonna sit back and just be part of the ball. I don't want to be, I don't want to put too much attention on myself, but I mean it's his show, it's his thing, you know. It would have been awesome to just hang out with him. But yeah, it was a lot of fun. Thanks a lot to Mr. Ron and Miss Kelly. You guys are the best.

No, it was the next day.

The next day. And we were just like sitting there, and I just kept winning and winning. It was so cool. And like this older couple came and sat next to me. They were waiting for me to leave. I was like, I just played. Finally, they took off. The wife took off first, and the guy took off. I was like, Well, time to go to bed. And it was like almost three o'clock in the morning. Yeah, it was rough. Oh my gosh, but I won $500. It was so cool. The most life I think I've ever won in Vegas.

And she just kept playing, and I'm just like, Yeah, I didn't want to drink anymore. I'm just tired. I'm gonna go to bed. Exhausted, man. Hey, how old are we? What is happening? Uh, and then you know, we we come home. Um, yeah, she she was fail feeling it the next day for her struggle button.

I yeah, I'm like, I'm getting old. Yeah, but I don't want to admit that we're old.

But my body felt it. Like, ooh, well that morning.

I was fine still, but I've been told by many different people, I'm a machine, I don't do it on purpose, it's just what it is. I'm living life.

I slept the whole drive back. You did, which was helpful because then I was I felt like a million times better after waking up.

That was the I agreed, like um, we're I'll I'll drive us there, but somebody else driving us back because I ain't driving back. I don't know how we're gonna be. And Ron drove us back, it was great. Um, and then we go to um we get back on a we drive back on a Saturday, first of all. Like that just shows our age. We did not stay through the weekend. We drove back on a Saturday. Um, and then Sunday was just a flat out bum day. Just lay down, do nothing, relax, and rest and recover because then we had the week of work, because I'm working now, as I mentioned. All right, waste management shot. Um, and that Friday we take off and we go to uh Dallas, Texas. We stopped in Odessa first um to go stay with my mom. She made us breakfast. Chilaquilis, thanks, mom. Um but we leave because we we all had to work on Friday. So we were gonna leave um first thing as soon as everybody got off work, and we were gonna do like two o'clock ish, and then two o'clock turned into three, three stretched into four. Gosh dang it, whatever. Um they we threw all our stuff in and we go, we we start going and not 10 minutes into the freeway drive.

That was like 40 minutes, but yeah.

There's there was construction. It was before Benson. Benson's 40 minutes away, so it was like right there. And we were in that construction for uh solid half hour. It's like not more.

Oh so, and then like because people are just don't know how to drive when it comes to those things, and it makes you get stuck. Like, we got blocked.

Yeah, I I I straight up took a shoulder because the dude was trying to the guy was blocking the the lane.

Okay, so people, let's just get this straight. Okay. So here's a lesson for you from Harms House Podcast.

Yes. When you are driving and there is going to be construction because the lane is ending, the merge is at where the lane ends, right?

It's the merge point.

It they literally have the cones that go into the merge. That's where you merge, that's where the merge is supposed to happen. Everybody's supposed to zipper. What that means is one car goes, then one car merges in. The car goes from the lane.

Do not write the button in front of the do not write the button of the car in front of you.

No, I don't care if you think them in. Car merge, car merge. The zipper and go through, that's how it works. It's at the merge. It's at where the cones are, it's at where the lane ends.

And the people are like, I don't care, I'll drive it. You're an idiot. Don't do that.

So if you want to get in the lane sooner, that's on you. That's on you. That's on you. That's okay. But the proper way to do it is at when the lane starts to end. Both lanes are traffic. When the cones start to curve in. Now, don't be the a-hole who blocks off the lane so people can't go all the way to the merge to merge in. Because this is what happened when we got stuck. And I'm I'm like little, right? I'm I'm a small size, I'm five th two, five three. And I'm rather, you know, petite. So I went down the slide, and me going down the slide, it's like right on my arms. And so I'm like, ooh, because I know that her was right behind me. So I'm like, I don't know how he's gonna fit.

And as soon as you walk into the Alamo, if you've never been, it's like where the the church part is, you walk in. Um, there's a room to the right, and I I tell Gordy, I said, Look, Gordy, this was like one of the bedrooms that um you know they used like during during the battle. And one of the like workers, the volunteers or whatever he is, he's like, actually, that was a like a christening. Uh they would do the uh baptisms and stuff like that there. Um and then later on they were used, you know, for whatever. And I was like, Oh, yeah, okay, cool. Thanks. And as I'm walking off, I whisper to Layla, like, let me tell my own dang stories, dog. Like, I got things. I don't care if they're accurate, he's gonna be entertained. That's all that matters. Golly. So then we go walking around, and it's funny because we're standing outside, and Gordy's like, I need the air. Because it's all humid and it's hot outside, and they're building it up outside to make it look like what's there's nothing sea in the LML inside the others.

Told him about Emily West, and I told him about the Davy Crockett, and I told him about Jim Bowie and his knives, and then oh man, I was I was in on Cloud9, and even Layla, like it's you could tell she was entertained watching me be a nerdy dad trying to teach my kids about the Alamo and like how great the Alamo was, and yeah, and then we lost. And uh, you know, it happens.

Um, and then from there, uh we went to San Marcos, which is where Layla is going to be going to school at the former Southwest Texas University, which is now Texas State University. Texas State, yeah. For those of you not watching, I flip my hat around because uh we got ourselves some hats and t-shirts. We are all technical out in Texas state.

And it's like, okay, now we gotta wake up and we gotta sit in here and do all these things. This is our first kid in college.

But they explained some of those things during those classes, like, get them through the first six weeks. I think get the through the first six weeks, they're gonna be great. And you're like, but I don't want them, I want them home. Like, it's just again, it's our first kid in college, so it's like learning all of these things and understanding. And then we had Gordy there the whole day, and Gordy is such a good kid.

Second time I went was when I was in tech school there in San Antonio, except for I was on the Guadalupe, and we float that river again by myself, drinking. No kids, no kids, having a good time. I gotta worry about nobody by yourself, just me.

And I'm like, I saw those folks coming. I was like, can you get my kid?

No, I'm not gonna leave my kid there.

You weren't going nowhere, broken.

Like, I'm like, I've gotta go save my kid because the worm's not getting out of those firm's just floating with his beer. Like, no, they're gonna get my kid. No, no. No, you weren't. Yes, I was. You can ask Layla, you were not moving. So I put my crocs on to go into the water because where we were at, you could stand. So I was just gonna stand and walk over there and no, it went deep immediately where we were at. I couldn't touch yes, I couldn't touch the ground. So when I got out, I like went like down. I was like, oh, there's no floor here. And crocs are not good to kick around in the water, they make you float up. Yeah. So I took them off. I had I had Layla's tube, my tube, the tube with the um beer, and I'm I'm coming, Gordy. Kick him off feet. Don't worry. And these people are like, um, there's a kid over here. And I'm like, that's our kid. Like, I'm coming, mom's coming. So then the guy from the other tube hops off, helps me out, pulls Gordy over. He also didn't realize, like, there's no ground here. So he pops in, he's like, oh shit, like, shoot, there's a there it is. Like, okay, hands over, Gordy. And I get Gordy. I'm like, oh my God. They're like, you guys want some rope? I was like, yes, please. And they toss us over some rope. Thank you, whoever you were, random boater, random floaters. That rope, we tied everybody together.

So then we get all back. So then I'm like struggling because now I don't can't get into the boat or into the float tube. And so I'm like, okay, let's go over. So I'm like kicking us over to the to the edge. Oh, this is so gross. There's things in that river. And I just felt it when I feed him. Oh my gosh. And as I'm like swimming too, it's like a turtle coming to be like, don't. And I'm like, don't, don't come over here. I can't handle it. I was so over.

This was the least aggressive turtle you would have ever seen in your time.

I was like, it's so close, it's gonna get me. It's like the turtle's just like land of the water. I'm just kicking. But it's coming towards me and I'm freaking out. I'm like, I just need to get in the I just need to get in, I'd like let me get to the bank. Uh and I didn't have my shoes on, so I'm like everything my feet were touching. No, it was disgusting.

Oh just reiterating. I said sunscreen. Oh, yeah, we didn't. We had some, but just make sure you take it.

But then we're going through and it gets wrapped, like the rapids, right? So much fun, except for you gotta lift your butt. Because I didn't know this.

You gotta lift your butt high though.

High, because in the salt river, there's gravel. It's more like gravel. And there's some rapids, but not that they're not crazy. These were crazy rapids, and they're big rocks. Like straight up, my butt just into one rock, hits another one, hits my ankle. I'm like the first hour of this float trip was a nightmare. It was rough. It was rough. Then we get to really big open area, we finally get to relax and just kind of paddle. And like every time they started struggling, because I was in the back with the the ice chest. And every time they started struggling, I would like paddle my way to the front, get us to where we needed to go, and then just flow back to the back, watch them struggle, like and getting us there again. And then I know we need to turn soon, so I float over there, get back to the front, get us where we need to go. Um, so yeah, it was an experience. And I had to share that before you skipped it all because I forgot about it. It was fun, it was cool. I mean, we have a checklist now of things that we need for next time.

He was bored because he was just, and I didn't want to let him in the water because what if he floats away and he had a life. Once he did, though, he did freak out and he just went.

Yeah, because he finally was like, all right, get in the water, and he got in the water and he was kind of like, I can't see anything.

Yeah, and then he was like bored. It was he was more so bored than anything. So he's not just uh let me just lay here and chill, but he did fall nap. Like he did end up napping. If you go into my our Facebook, or not Facebook, well, Facebook and Instagram, there's pictures of him. He's because he had a life vest on, so the life vest was a little bit bigger, so his head went all the way down. We and we put Herm's hat on him, and he was just napping pretty much the second half of the River and Roy. And then he woke up the last like rapids we go through. He wakes up, he's like, You're fine, it's okay. You're all good, dude. You're good.

But it was good times. Then we did we drive home um the next day. Drive home, but we stopped in El Paso and got to hang out with all of our friends over there. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. Um got to do some dinner and had a few drinks and just hanging out, man. We've got a bunch of old everybody's ready to go, you know, in by like 10 o'clock because they're all old.

Yes, we're all no one is young. Everybody's old. I'd like to drink. Although we did hang out and talk like in the in the living. We went back to the house and got to do it.
