Hey everyone. I'm Lauren, I'm Ava and I'm Linley, and welcome to the St Joseph's Tigger Show, the official student-run podcast of St Joseph's Academy in Baton Rouge, where we'll talk about all things SJA and anything else we find interesting. We'll also talk to students, teachers and staff members around campus. So, ava, how about you start off with telling us about yourself?
AvaHi guys, I am a junior here at SJA and, yeah, what's your favorite color? My favorite color is pink, and it's been my favorite color since I've, like literally been born.
LaurenWas, like everything in your room, pink. Yeah, my walls are pink.
LinleyOh very nice.
AvaYeah, what's your favorite animal? I have a few. I love elephants and turtles, go turtles, and giraffes and dolphins Okay wide range, I know.
LaurenWhere is the best place you've been?
Avaon vacation. Ooh, that's difficult, I don't know. Well, okay, this isn't really a place, but like a cruise that's good, like the atmosphere of a cruise, you know yeah.
LaurenI love them. All the different things you get to do.
AvaYeah, yeah, I have a question. Like the free ice cream.
LinleyOkay, if you like what TV or movie or book character like would you say is most like you I have to think about that. I don't know, like yeah, that's hard, I know that is hard I feel like that shows who you are as a person you know well for sure, but I think I'm like bad at like coming up with it myself.
AvaLike we can try to think of one that we think Okay, let's see.
LinleyYou kind of you kind of give Elle Woods, but like a little like muted, like not as like big, bright pink you know, yeah, but like you do, like, want to get things done and like, and also you're very like oh, I'm gonna do my hair, I'm gonna do you know right what's?
Laurena character that always laughs, maybe oh yeah okay yeah, it was definitely our laugher. Yeah your little giggles there. You're in there. Linley, do you want to tell us about yourself?
Linleyum sure, my name is Linley, I am a junior and also go turtles. Um, my favorite color is orange, just because it's like a happy color, probably. And then my favorite animal is probably a lion, because it's just been my favorite animal since I was little, because my favorite movie when I was little was the lion king, and so I used to watch it like every single night, and so lion has always been my favorite animal. Um, what else is there? My favorite vacation was to the grand canyon, and then my fate, I mean, oh, a character that would describe me, probably Monica from Friends.
AvaI feel like yes, I see it okay.
LinleyI feel like it's like me type a. Yeah see, we took a personality test in my in our theology class and that was like a character that like said, like had a similar personality to me. And then I like watched some of my friends and I like I get it after seeing it wait, I have a question.
LaurenDo y'all know you're Myers-Briggs?
AvaI think I'm ENFP wait oh yeah, yeah, yeah. I think that's what I am wait.
LinleyI need to like know what they all I, I'm extroverted, and then you were definitely J.
AvaWhat is J Judgment?
LinleyWait, what's the other one? It's.
AvaP. I don't know, but I remember you had opposite of me.
LinleyOkay, then I was J it's perceiving. Perceiving.
LaurenOkay, then I'm J. I think it is. What else is there?
LinleyOh sensing and observing. Is that one?
AvaSensing, and so Intuitive is one, intuitive is the N.
LinleyOh yeah, that's been Wait. I think I'm more thinking, or actually no, I said I was more feeling than thinking because I like care about what other people like. I care about other people's feelings more than like like if someone were to ask me a question, I would be like not brutally honest like I would like that's f yeah I think, I think, I think it said I was f yeah, yeah so what's that?
LaurenI don't know. I kind of forgot.
AvaIt's always like extrovert and then, like I'm in me too, it's like the. So what is the other one?
LaurenI don't know, okay, we can skip that one, and then F and then J.
LinleyOkay, what are?
Avayou.
LaurenOkay, what are you I-N-F-P I like always have Every time I'm taking the test, it has told me the same thing. Really, I don't know what that says about me. I think I have to read about it again. Yeah, but I like think it was me to a t right yeah, all good, so tell us more about yourself, lauren. Answer the question okay um my name's Lauren, um duh and um I'm a senior, yeah, you are and I'm going to LSU.
LaurenIf anyone wants to know that, um, my favorite color is green and what else? Um, my favorite animal, I don't really know loki, a dolphin, I guess.
AvaOkay, class yeah, I can go dolphins, um, um.
LaurenWhat were the other questions? Vacation, oh favorite vacation, low-key london okay because yeah or I mean it could be new york mm-hmm those I'll low-key say london. Okay, that was changed my life yes, I love that. Yeah, um what else?
LinleyI don't know a TV or a character to this idea y'all. I have no idea. Okay, I don't think that's like that.
LaurenI feel like that's such a hard.
AvaI feel like someone else, like, would have to tell you yeah yeah, I let me just know I mean because, yeah, yeah, I'm trying to think, I know I'm trying to think of like. I feel like there's such a wide range of like characters, oh yeah you'll.
LaurenI mean, there's definitely someone like each of us. We just maybe we just don't know it yet you're right it's just like a mystery we'll think about that yeah, well, let's move into our discussion topic um what decade would you want to be a teenager in?
Avawe'll start with ava me okay. Well, I'm gonna have to say the 80s, because like everything was just like bright and colorful and like it was so fun, you know. At least it looked that way. Yeah, so true, but um, do you want?
Linleyme to go. Yeah, okay, so I I've actually am torn between two decades and I'll say I'll say them both and I'll explain them both. First, the 80s, like Ava said, because it was very vibrant, colorful, fun, like just the music, like very fun, like get you up dancing, you know yeah second the 50s that was the one that I had in my brain for you.
AvaOkay, okay, because I don't.
LinleyI just like, like, like drive in movies and go like dancing in the coke in the um glass bottles. I just think that's so cute. You know, that's so exciting. Yeah, the diners.
Avayes, I just think that's so cute. You know that's so aesthetic. Yeah, the diners, grease.
LinleyYes, literally grease, like that's just so fun, yeah. So I think, I don't know, I think either one of those, yeah, that's the one you would rock a poodle skirt. Yeah, okay, maybe I'll say 50, so that could be different.
Laurenfor me, though, yeah, lauren, what's yours? Okay, I'm also torn between two, but they're very close to each other.
LinleySo, versus 80s, I feel like everyone says that right it's just so fun.
LaurenThe music was good, the movies were good right just everything well, I mean, like our parents grew up doing like movie stars were good.
LinleyThat's what I'm talking about.
LaurenYeah, so good and like, like parents were born in the 70s and then they were like like teens and teens and like tweens. Yeah, yeah, teens in the 70s and then they were like like teens and like tweens in the 80s, like that's so good, yeah. But my other one is the 90s. I felt was born in the 90s and then, like, grew up as a teenager in the 2000s. Yeah, because I would love to be a teenager in prime time. One Direction.
LinleyYeah, that's fair.
LaurenOne Direction early Taylor Swift.
LinleySo good, that suits you.
AvaYeah, like low-key.
LinleyThat suits you very well.
LaurenI'm just trying to think of who was born in the 90s. So then I would be the same age as them. So only if I was born 10 to 15 years earlier, it would be perfect. But, it's fine.
AvaLucky also the 70s. I feel like it'd be so fun like disco, I feel like they're all so different.
LinleyI agree, they're all. Yeah, I like. The way we think about them is very different. Oh, absolutely.
LaurenI guess, like the 2010s were too Like from now, like how different they are, which is kind of scary, like what's it going to be in the 2030s? I know, are we going to look back and be like, why did? Why do we do all that Exactly, probably, probably.
LinleyThat's terrifying, I know. I always think like in like 2060, like our like kids and grandkids are going to like have parties and be like, oh, dress in the 2020s Because, like you know how we dressed in like 1980s, like they're going to be dressing how we dressed as like a costume.
LaurenI think that's crazy, that's sickening like I know. Baggy jeans and a top like a little lemon scuba like literally it's gonna the basic outfit. Why do we dress like that? Um, I don't know, oh my god, it's crazy.
AvaOkay, guys, I have a question. What decade would you not want to be a teen in?
Linleyum, I would say like the 1930s, because isn't that like prime great depression? Um, especially like late 30s, because that's like, yeah, that just doesn't seem like much fun. Um, a lot of stuff is happening, yeah, um, yeah, I feel like that wouldn't be very exciting, because then also, if you're a teen, then like you, you're about to go to war, like you don't know it, but like you're about to go to war again. It's like all your friends are like being sent off to who knows where to go fight in a war.
LaurenLike that's not fun, you know that's not fun, I mean I, I also thought of that's where my mind went to right, like I was thinking like late 30s, 40s probably would not be fine. Yeah, that's like I don't know. But also I, I, I need a phone.
AvaRight, I need my phone lauren, even if you were in like the 50s or any of that, you wouldn't have a phone anyway.
LaurenThat's what I'm. I would not live in the 50s or 60s.
LinleyNo, yeah, she needs her phone, Lauren. What's your screen time Y'all?
Laurendon't want to know. It actually has been. It went down since I got a job oh gosh. I got a job, oh gosh. Now, ever since I've got, I'm employed. I can't scroll as long as I normally do, so what is it now? Now I actually got the notification, like yesterday, and it said like six hours something, only six.
LinleyY'all, that's. It used to be way higher.
AvaRight's yours, ava, oh mine's not that high, okay, but I just feel like six.
LinleyI was not expecting to say I was expecting. I mean that is a fourth of your day, y'all. It used to be right. 11 hours, lauren, holy cow, like on a school day.
AvaWe go to school for eight of those?
LinleyAnd do you sleep? What in the world, oh my God.
LaurenWhat? 11 hours? That is not Okay. Maybe it is, I don't know what in the world.
LinleyOh my God, yeah, I got things to do on my phone Right right, right right.
LaurenThat's so insane. Gosh, mine's like four hours roughly.
AvaWhat do you do instead? Um homework? Oh yeah, anything other than using your phone yeah, sometimes I go outside like nature you know oh okay that sounded like a diss.
LaurenYeah, I go outside. I don't know about you but Obviously not you yeah.
LinleyI don't think I mean you might go like outside to like get a better like perception from your phone I go outside and
Laurenscroll If my For you page wasn't so good like sorry, right, right, I don't, it's the algorithm. And I have things to catch up on, like it's fine right. I mean I'm up to date. All my friends ask me what's going on on the internet. I know they don't okay, so you're informed. I'm very informed, I think, on yeah, there you go maybe not the important stuff right, but like worldly, worldly things and what's happening.
LinleyI mean yeah.
AvaTrials celebrity gossip.
LaurenTrends oh, I know it all.
LinleyRight.
LaurenThey come to me yeah.
LinleyYou're our go-to gal for that kind of stuff, Right right, see.
LaurenSo another thing, we're all so different. Lindley, like you, ask her about the sports, and then Ava has the giggles and laughs, and also she well, let me finish, go ahead and she also loves her fashion and beauty tips perhaps, yeah, does, so she can inform y'all on that. And then, yeah, yeah, lauren as well.
AvaYeah, lauren, like celebrity gossip.
LinleyAlso like yeah.
LaurenOh yeah, I'm your girl.
LinleyOr like reviews for like anything you can watch or read, or anything Like movies, shows, books, anything like that You've read it or watched it.
AvaOr scrolled about it. Just wait for the Met Gala Ooh.
LaurenMet Gala Oscars. That's going to be a good one, a real big one. I'm like so excited. That's soon too.
LinleyYeah, I know, I'm so excited.
Casual Chat About Media Trends
LaurenI forgot what. I think it's the 1st or 2nd of March and, oh, I feel like it's on a Sunday, though the Oscars, yeah, I have no idea. I think it usually is because I always like, have to like do my homework and stuff, and I'm like, oh, but I have to watch the Oscars or the Grammys.
LinleyThat's how I was about the Super Bowl. I was like I have all my homework done by 5 pm so that I can watch the Super Bowl. Oh, I'm so glad. Did you watch like the whole thing I did? Yeah, I did not. Actually, in between commercials I was also reading a book we had to read for English, but you know.
Ms. SpearsWhat do you mean in between?
Linleycommercials. During the commercials. Why would you do that?
LaurenBecause I'd rather watch the game than the commercials. Oh my God, lauren only watches the commercials. Goodness gracious, are you all surprised? I don't know, I don't care what's. I mean, I think everyone kind of knew the Eagles were going to win, so I would Did everyone know that. I kind of did, because I feel like I don't know. I had a feeling, because I feel like I don't know. I had a feeling. I guess maybe it was only me, but I, like my scroll breaks were during the game.
LinleyWow, maybe that's why my screen time is less, because I was only on it during the commercials and you were on your phone during the actual game.
LaurenYeah, I guess those that runs longer, but the I oh, oh, my God. The commercials were do y'all know your favorite commercial this year? I do, which one.
AvaThe meta commercial. I thought that was hilarious. Remind me what that was. Okay, it was all Chris's. It was Chris um Jenner. Did I just make that up, chris Jenner? It was Chris, oh yeah.
LaurenH, it was Chris Hemsworth.
AvaChris Pratt and Chris Jenner or whatever, and it's the banana on the wall and like one of them was eating it. I don't know, I just love that it was all Chris's and like I don't know something about.
LaurenIt was just really funny to me wow, it was like yeah, the banana was like duct taped. I forgot the point of it, but I I remember being like oh my God, because whoever like was in it, I love my girl, kris, yeah, jenner, yeah, because they're all Kris's. What about yours? Oh?
AvaI don't really remember what book did you read during it? Oh yeah, Great Gatsby, Nice yeah. What was your favorite part of that one? That book.
LaurenOf the book? Um, probably the very end, but I'm not gonna spoil it for those.
LinleyUm, that's your favorite part of those two yeah, I liked it because it like tied everything together, all the themes.
AvaI was like, yeah, no, absolutely not the last not, not like the, not the wait last chapter but like the ending of but the first, not the last chapter.
LinleyNot the last chapter, but like the ending of but the first big thing that happened.
AvaI don't know, I liked that I liked.
LinleyThat, did you read? It Like them coming back from them, coming back to the East and West Egg from New York. I liked that that would happen then.
AvaI understand.
LinleyThat was my favorite. I don't agree with you.
AvaDid you read it? Yeah, what's your opinion on? Like the book On the part Lindley's talking about.
LaurenI forgot what I mean y'all, it's been a minute you know, I mean, I'm old Kidding. But um what was your favorite commercial?
LinleyOld Kidding what was your favorite commercial.
LaurenMy favorite. For the Super Bowl.
LinleyI want to remember them because I don't think I absorbed them very well.
LaurenI'm drawing a blank yeah.
LinleyI did too.
AvaYeah, there was one, I feel like a lot of oh my, the one with the tongue was so weird.
LaurenDid y'all see that the tongue no, it was for the cold foam. Oh my gosh, I know what you're talking about. It was weird. I didn't like it. I'm trying to think of the there was a few oh, poppy, the one with Poppy.
AvaOh.
Ms. SpearsI know what you're talking about.
LaurenIt had all my people in it. It was so Y'all, jake Shane. When I saw that man, the pure joy that went through me, it was so proud of him. I was like he made it. I mean I was like, okay, alex Earl ate too, but like I was so happy for my boy, jake Shane.
LinleyI'm so glad. Yeah, y'all know who that is right, I'm so glad.
LaurenYeah, y'all know who that is right. Yes, okay, sorry, I mean I feel like I've told it, like a few people that are who just talking about it with my lunch table they kind of got confused, okay, but for those who don't know who Jake Shane is, he is an influencer. He started those videos that was like POV. I'm blank this person and it's like so funny, like I think he one of his. That's how he started. Yeah, do you remember this?
Avayeah, it was like a year or two ago.
LaurenIt's like like a pencil being broken up with or something, and then it's like, yeah, it's like are you serious, I'm so sure for something like that, like it was so funny. And then, um, I, I'm so excited, I'm just gonna talk about because I'm so excited, I'm just going to talk about it because I'm so excited. He's going on tour and my mom got me tickets. Talk about what? Like talking, yeah, like this. But he's funny and it's like just him Like a comedy tour. Oh okay, he's a funny little guy.
AvaLike a podcast tour. Yeah, oh, podcast tour yeah.
LaurenOh my God, You'll have to watch his podcast too. It's so funny, but he just announced that Connor Wood, who also has a podcast, brooke and Connor make a podcast. That one too, but he is my. I'm so in love with him. Sorry, connor Wood, I'm also going to be seeing him, I think. Yeah, I'm like going to cry, like I just found out at lunch.
AvaWait. So are these like comedy? Like, these are like comedy. Like funny yeah, they're funny, no, but like are they like comedy? Like stand-up comedy? Yeah, that's exciting.
LaurenAnd I think it's like going to be like his podcast which, like he has like special guests. So I think it's just going to be him and Connor. Okay cool Is.
AvaConnor, another TikToker yeah.
LaurenYeah, he has a TikTok.
AvaI don't know, I don't know who this is.
LaurenI know. That's why I just informed you.
LinleyYes, yes, you did. Yes, okay, wait. So going back to what is your decade that you would not want to live in Ava, my decade is the 1870s. Okay, elaborate.
AvaIt's just so boring, like I think of the 1870s, and it's like tan and like beige and like drab. Oh okay, like, isn't that, like, so, like, right, yeah, and like isn't that, like, so, like, right, yeah, like, and like everything was like just starting, like, like, isn't it like 1842 when, like, columbus came over?
Laurenhere, 42?
LinleyUm no 14, 1492. So close, Ava, ava, ava, you were right there. Wait, ava, avaa you what, what, when did you say? Because I you do realize, like abraham lincoln's era has passed.
AvaLike all of these people, no, but I do genuinely mean the 1870s. I don't want to live there. Okay, good, just did not mean that you didn't mean christopher columbus she.
LaurenShe was thinking about christopher columbus girl.
AvaI was thinking of the state song and I was like in like, but like in 1842 no, columbus no, was it 14.
LinleyColumbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492 whoa in 1492 we sailed the ocean blue.
AvaThat's what I was thinking. But next week we'll see Columbus in Ohio, except I was thinking 18 spring that song back, 42. Yeah 1842 we sailed the ocean blue.
LaurenYeah, no that's not it.
LinleyGood try, but no.
AvaOkay, but anyway, the 1870s were still so like drab sounding.
LinleyRight, like. Would you want to be like in America, or like?
Avain Britain. I wouldn't want to live in America, probably Britain.
LaurenWell, I think, isn't that like Bridgerton time? I think so.
AvaThat time. I think Maybe a little before. That would be so fun. Oh now, no, not in America.
LaurenStill, I'm pretty sure it was like before the 1870s, but around that I think If I had to live there, I'd want to be rich, though. Well, yeah, at that time, Like the dresses, yeah, right.
AvaI would not want to be just like an average person.
LinleyRight At that time, you want to be rich.
LaurenShe wants to be a duchess.
LinleyWith the big ball gowns.
LaurenYeah, a viscountess.
AvaGoodness, gracious, goodness, gracious, poofy dress. Honestly, I feel like, yeah, yeah, do you?
Laurenwant to be like a, like a average person at that time. No, no, no, I just wouldn't like a fast you'd be like a factory worker.
LinleyI feel like, wouldn't you?
Avano, you were like the industrial revolution, oh yeah, no, yeah, I wouldn't no, but like you wouldn't work, no, okay she wants she's you're rich, I forget, I forget, she wants to lay in the sun.
LaurenYeah, just sit around, oh I would love that tv, but I wish I need a phone. Not to mention that again, but you know, just had to make it known, which is fine lauren would be like in, like, like the renaissance era.
LinleyShe would like have like the pigeons, like sending messages get this to them now. Yeah, no, I can't wait that long you'd have like a whole like flock of pigeons just constantly bringing you messages.
LaurenYeah, just talking to all my friends yeah, yeah, yeah, via pigeon. No, I don't know, never mind. Back to the decade question. What, like, if we were here at SJA? What decade would you want to be here in? Like the uniforms and stuff Right now? Nice, maybe, if you couldn't pick that Ava.
LinleyPick something different, then, like 2010s, like Okay, I don't want to go back to like long skirt, like yeah, I guess I'd agree with you, although the nuns' outfits are kind of fire you know, back in the 1870s, Okay
Avaso actually they were only around for two years in the 1870s.
LinleyNot 1879. Facts Okay, just kidding.
AvaStill probably had long skirts.
LinleySo hey, I think that you know for that time.
LaurenI feel like that was pretty hip, you know. Yeah, I feel like I did a like project in English this year, like at the beginning, and we had to like write about SJ and like the history year, like at the beginning, and we had to like write about sj and like the history and a few people did like like may die hall and we had to do it on a building and like some people did, may die and like you know how, there's like pictures. We were looking at the pictures and like they're old, like the library used to be the gymnasium, like and it looks so fun I don't know, what year that was, I think.
LaurenI think like maybe like the 50s or I don't know.
LinleyYeah, I'm probably so wrong, but I mean even when, even when my mom went here, it was so different.
AvaShe said oh yeah yeah, crazy I know like that's why I wanted to be now. Yeah, okay, now we can take classes like journalism right, you're right're right.
LinleySo true, so true.
AvaCouldn't do that in the 1870s Right.
LaurenWell, yeah, god is there.
LinleyYeah.
LaurenWell, we've shared our thoughts. We'd also love to hear yours. You can text us anytime from the link in our show description. You can leave your name and class or you can remain anonymous. You can text us what decade you'd love to live in or not, or maybe your screen time to help me feel better.
LinleyYes, please give us your opinions. We want to hear them all.
AvaAnd make sure you guys stay tuned for our exciting interview with Ms Spears. We'll see you after this.
LinleyDid you know that St Joseph's Academy now has a podcast?
LaurenThat's right. The St Joseph's Sticker Show is the official student-run podcast of SJA.
AvaIn each episode we'll talk about whatever's on our mind and what's happening on campus. Plus, we'll sit down with SJA students and faculty to dive deeper into their thoughts about the latest happenings and we want to hear from you. You'll be able to send us your thoughts and ideas about what we should discuss on the show and we know you'll have some thoughts about what we say and we want to hear those too.
LinleySo join the three of us Lindley, lauren and Ava for the St Joe's Sticker Show.
LaurenAvailable on Spotify, apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to your podcasts. Welcome back to the St Joe's Sticker Show. Joining us now for an interview is our guest, the Mission Integration Director here at SGA, ms Jade Spears. Ms Spears, welcome to the show. How?
Ms. Spearsare you today. Thank you all so much for having me. I'm doing great today. It's a Friday, it's chilly out, nothing to complain about. I'm so glad.
LaurenSo have you always had your role at SGA.
Ms. SpearsNo, actually this is my eighth year at St Joseph's and it is, I guess, technically my fourth job in those eight years. So I was originally hired to teach theology to freshmen and sophomores and then I got out of the theology department temporarily and was assistant campus minister. I taught social studies, so I taught civics and African-American history for a while, and then I was campus minister, most recently, I guess and while being campus minister taught church history, and so now I am mission integration director. So a lot of jobs. Do you still teach? Yes, I have one section of church history every morning I get to teach my sophomores. Do you still teach? Yes, I have one section of church history every morning I get to teach my sophomores.
LinleyDo you have a favorite position that you've had? Probably the one that.
Ms. SpearsI have now. It has been a good challenge for me. In all my previous roles here, I really focused on the student experience, and my new role gives me the opportunity to engage with students every single day, but also to get to know the faculty and staff a lot, lot better, and so I'm really grateful for that.
AvaThat's awesome. What other job would you want to do like at SGA if you didn't have this one? If you didn't have this one.
Ms. SpearsI don't know if there is a job that I could point to and say, oh, that would be like a dream job, maybe a combination of things, some of them that I already do, some of them maybe that technically fall under someone else. Right now, I really love events and event planning, and so I joke all the time that if I did something that wasn't at SJA, it would be to be an event planner. And so I don't know, maybe if there's, you know, an event planner job at SJA, maybe that'll be next.
LaurenYes, that sounds fun, I'd do that probably.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I think it would just be so fun to work with everyone.
LinleyYeah, I agree.
Ms. SpearsWhat brought you to SAA. So when I was finishing up grad school, saa actually came to LSU. There was a recruitment event, and so a lot of local schools were just in the ballroom at LSU and I am really type A. So the night before the like interview, I guess, segments opened. You could like go in and schedule your interviews, and so I knew that I wanted to work in a Catholic school. I knew I wanted to teach theology, and so I scheduled a couple of practice interviews with schools that I would not have seriously considered, because I stayed up till midnight. I got to get the first pick of everything and then I scheduled SJA and immediately Ms Rader was in my first interview.
Ms. SpearsMs Rader in the office, um, and it was just the place that I knew. Um, I was supposed to bei actually came to summer camp here when I was a little girl, um, every summer, and so where the activity center and the academy student center meet used to be the carpool lane back in the day, and the academy student center was the big parking lot, and so in the summers my grandma would come and pick me up from summer camp every day, like right at the activity center door, um, and I guess, I don't know we didn't eat lunch in the dining hall. We ate lunch on the activity center floor, and I don't know why, but, um, because I was already a little familiar with SJA. Um, it felt in many ways like coming back home.
LinleyAwesome, I went to the summer camps here too.
Ms. SpearsSizzling summer camp yes, and now I teach at sizzling summer camp. I teach scrapbooking, so it's kind of a full circle.
AvaIt's so sweet. Okay, so you had said that you knew you wanted to teach at a Catholic school or something. What did you study in college?
Ms. SpearsSo my undergraduate degree is in history and religious studies and my master's is in secondary social studies education. So teaching church history is like a dream. The state of Louisiana, like the Department of Education, considers Catholic church history to be the history of religion, considers Catholic church history to be the history of religion. So I am certified to teach this class through the state. But also to be able to tie in a faith component to something I love is really cool. It's kind of like where world history meets your faith.
LaurenYeah, you literally get to do both. Yeah, that's so fun.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I tell people all the time that I got my dream job on the first try. Aw, aw.
LinleyHow sweet Lauren. You had an experience as a teacher. How was that I?
Laurendid. She thought we were ridiculous. Well, because me and my best friend Ainsley, we would. I can't. I don't even think I can like. It's really embarrassing, but like we would like, while she was teaching, we would. Ainsley would start making cat noises. Miss Spears would just stop and look around. And every time it was Ainsley Every time, every single time, and then she separated us one day.
Ms. SpearsYeah, it was time.
LaurenIt was time I get it. It had to be done.
Ms. SpearsBut your class also, Ainsley would send me videos of her life. You have to tell them about it. How about?
Laurenyou say the story.
Ms. SpearsSo I wish that you could all see at home the videos that Ainsley would send me. The first one was about special sauce. Yeah, oh, and the special sauce contained a lot of things I don't know. Lauren might have to help me out. It was like sriracha and ketchup and mayo. A ton of things. Oh, just really not appealing.
LaurenAnd they're all available in Sage.
Ms. SpearsEvery single day Made it right in the dining hall, oh wow, and then the worst part is that it ended with being in the microwave for 30 seconds in a tiny plastic condiment container.
LaurenOh no, I forgot about that part.
Ms. SpearsAnd at the end of the video she swirled the sauce around to mix it up with a french fry and ate it on camera.
LinleyOh good, good.
LaurenShe made the video specifically for Miss Spears too.
Ms. SpearsAnd I said, coach Liz, someone else needed to experience it.
LaurenThe scariness of the video.
Ms. SpearsAnd there were so many of these videos. It wasn't just the special sauce.
LaurenOh, and then at the end of the year, ms Spears gave us awards, because Superlatives. Superlatives, not awards because we really didn't deserve any awards, but superlatives.
Ms. SpearsBecause we were Lauren's really adding herself.
LaurenIt's okay. I was just a little sophomore. I've grown, hopefully, my goodness. Yeah, I actually forgot what mine was. I think it was like actually something nice and Ainsley got one that was like really disturbing, kind of it was something, I think, about the meowing, but it was a really good time and we were her only class, so so a lot of special perks. It was very special, and I think it was also eighth hour it was you can imagine that helps.
Ms. SpearsIt was eighth hour. What was? You can imagine? That helps. It was eighth hour.
AvaWhat a way to end the day, miss Spears, so obviously the snow days kept us inside.
Ms. SpearsDo you have any funny stories from that? I do, but first I have to share that Lauren's superlative was most likely to seem happy.
LaurenNever certain if she actually was, but she seemed it. Yes, I think it's because, like after me, and Ainsley got separated, like I would like, ainsley is and she's so loud, so she, she would like say things and I'd just laugh.
Ms. SpearsAnd that's true by myself in my chair. Other superlatives from that class include please most likely to make a dolphin sound, most likely to get miss spears off topic, that was Ainsley oh, yes, good most likely to talk about her cat that was Sadie. Most likely to cry while laughing Look at queen Technology whiz. Most likely to ask before getting her phone out and most likely to talk about her dog. It was a wild time Aw seriously one of my faves.
Ms. SpearsBut on the snow days when we had remote school, I worked from home. On the Tuesday, though, when it was actually snow, well, I guess I should back up to Monday. So that weekend I had gone to New York, and our flight got delayed on Monday night and I was like, oh my gosh, they're closing all these things. Like, are we going to be able to make it back? Because we flew into New Orleans and my best friend and I were kind of freaking out, um, because we both needed to get back to Baton Rouge, and so we did make it back. It was fine, but they had already closed several of the like bridges by the time we got back, so a little bit crazy. So after that, um, um, tuesday morning, wake up, it's already snowing, um, but not really sticking to the ground, and so I kind of kept an eye out.
Ms. SpearsBut I was working for my kitchen table and I'm like looking out the window while I'm typing, um, and I went outside a couple of times, um, but I didn't really like. I didn't build a snowman or anything. I was deeply terrified that my neighbor who was like due the next week, was going to go into labor, and I was like, oh my gosh, I'm like if Madison calls, I'm going to have to answer and go help her. And I didn't know, like, if her husband was home or not, because he's a doctor. So sometimes they get, like you know, trapped at the hospital. I didn't know. Um, luckily she didn't actually have her little girl until the next week, like she was supposed to, but I was kind of living in fear when everything was closed.
Ms. SpearsUm, but, yeah, the snow days were um were something. I don't usually spend that much time alone I was about to say.
LaurenI'm sure, like you love just having to stay still.
Ms. SpearsYeah, it was kind of nice. And then by Friday afternoon I was like I've got to go somewhere and would you like to know my big exciting outing the post office? Oh fire, I was because, well, I had plans to go other places and then there was like still a little bit of ice on the road and I was like I'm going back in. So I didn't go anywhere, really just the post office.
LaurenYeah, well, aside from all your other things, what are your hobbies when you're free time?
Ms. SpearsOkay, so I love sports Me too. Yeah, college football through and through. I'm a big LSU fan. So it's baseball opening day today. It is Games in a couple minutes, really. Oh. So I'm going to watch a lot of baseball this weekend. I'm looking forward to it. So I'm going to watch a lot of baseball this weekend, I'm looking forward to it. I have a like a quest I'm on, I guess you could say, to go to every major league sporting event, and so the only thing I haven't done is major league soccer, and so I'm going to try and make that happen this summer. But I went to a WNBA game for the first time last year, um, and so I saw the Las Vegas Aces play the Atlanta Dream, uh, and so, and it was just kind of like a random spur of the moment, like oh, let's do this um, the same girl I was with and we almost got stuck in New York.
LinleySo you, know, oh good maybe maybe we need to not go anywhere.
Ms. SpearsShe actually came to SJA so yeah, but that's my quest right now.
AvaI guess sports um yeah pretty much it's a fun one yeah, what other sports teams have you seen?
Sports, Concerts, and Travel Dreams
Ms. Spearsum, oh gosh, um. So my I come from a really big sports family and so, um growing up, we would always go, at least once in the summer, to watch the Houston Astros play in a series that's my dad's favorite team.
Ms. SpearsWe always go um, so the most embarrassing thing ever is every time we go. My dad knows all the cheers and the cheers have been the same since he was a little boy and he's like a little kid sitting in his seat in the stadium and I'm like this is so embarrassing. Last summer we went to see the Texas Rangers play, and so it was cool. We got to see Alex Bregman play for the Astros. Of course, now he's been traded to the Red Sox or free agency whatever, and then Josh Smith Catholic High alum plays for the Rangers, so it was pretty cool to be able to see them play against each other.
Ms. SpearsBut yeah, we go to Saints games a lot. My dad really loves football too, so outside of going to Tiger Stadium, I would say the Saints are kind of what we do. We occasionally watch the Pelicans play. Got tickets yesterday during the pre-sale to watch the Chicago Sky play the Brazil national team during the WNBA pre-season. They're playing at the PMAC, oh cool, um, on May 2nd or something like that. Got tickets to that yesterday. Um, yeah, I that in concert.
LaurenI would say sports in concerts yeah, yeah, I'm a big concert girl.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I had kind of gotten away from it a little bit because there were all the COVID restrictions and stuff. So I'm trying to get back into that this year.
AvaWhat's your favorite artist?
Ms. SpearsOh Okay, that's a tough question and it changes frequently. Lately I've really been loving Sabrina Carpenter.
LaurenOMG, you know, her deluxe came out today.
Ms. SpearsI know.
LaurenI'm so excited you didn't listen yet.
Ms. SpearsDid you listen? No, I didn't, I didn't. I don't listen to music on the way to school, usually Like silence in the car.
LinleyNo, oh, I was just wondering. Music on the way to school?
Ms. Spearsum usually so like silence in the car um no, usually in the morning I listen to a part of a podcast. Sometimes, if I haven't prayed, I'll pray in the car, or my mom will call in the morning. Gotcha, gotcha, silence.
LinleyNot really big on silence. If you haven't noticed, I know I was like maybe she just needs some peace before she sees people. I wasn't sure.
Ms. SpearsNo, no, I like drinking a cup of coffee at home.
AvaYeah.
Ms. SpearsThen I can be with the world in the car. Yeah, you do do a lot have I have a lot of silence at home. So when I'm at home, that silent time like won't turn the tv on if I don't have to, kind of situation gotcha.
LaurenSo yeah, maybe a little, I don't know crazy, but do you have any other besides Sabrina? Or like what's your favorite concert?
Linleyyou've ever been to. That's a good one if you have one.
Ms. SpearsOkay, so a few answers here. Best like surprise opener. I've ever seen Dan and Shay opened for Hunter Hayes when I was in college and I wasn't originally supposed to go and I had never heard a Dan and Shay song and like very quickly fell in love with them and was like oh my gosh, how have I never heard of these guys? Best overall, I guess, performer that's hard, because a part of me wants to say Beyonce.
LinleyRight.
Ms. SpearsBut she never comes out on time, which is frustrating to me, because I want to go to bed at a decent time. Yeah, I don't know. A part of me also would say I saw Shania Twain last year and I would have loved to see her in her prime right, yeah. I mean, it's a lot of standing around on the stage now, but you can tell what she once was.
LinleyMm-hmm.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I saw Taylor Swift in Tiger Stadium, and that is Something I'll never forget.
LaurenYes, I also was there. Yes, me too, but I did forget that day. I don't remember anything.
LinleyOh, oh I thought you were going to lore drop, like there's a reason you blocked it out.
LaurenYeah, no, I was just eight and I don't remember that's my second concert ever, but yeah, how fun.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I don't know. I have seen a lot of concerts.
LaurenYeah, I once skipped your class for a concert. Sorry, what did? You see, Tell me it was worth it. Yeah, it was. I went to Harry Styles oh okay, I'll forgive it.
Ms. SpearsSorry, I'll forgive it.
LaurenSecret I've been keeping from you.
Ms. SpearsProbably no one was here that day. Yeah, maybe I don't know. I'll have to go back and look at the attendance records. I'm cooked.
AvaMs Spears, did you get whoa tickets to beyonce? I did not even attempt actually.
Ms. SpearsUm, yeah, I don't know. I'm still trying to figure out what I'm doing this summer. Um, so I didn't attempt, but I do know that people were really frustrated about ticket master, because I saw it everywhere, yes, and I get it right, like I've waited in the queue to get into the waiting room to do this to do that you feel like you're jumping through 85 hoops just to get a ticket to a concert.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I can understand the frustration, right, but yeah, I didn't try this time. I saw her like 10 years ago, oh yeah, yeah, it was on the run two, I believe and it was Beyonce and Jay-Z at the Superdome. Whoa, yeah that was really good. It was a cool experience, but she came on like three hours late and I was ready to go to bed, so oh my goodness, that's awful.
LaurenThat's honestly one of the worst things that happened, yeah.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I mean, she's not the only one right, but it was pretty frustrating.
LaurenYeah, I feel like you love a schedule right.
Ms. SpearsYes.
LaurenAbsolutely I knew it.
Ms. SpearsYes, if I could, I would go to bed at 8 o'clock every night and wake up at like 4.30 and be fine.
LinleyThat's how I am.
Ms. SpearsI'm definitely a morning person. Yeah, I just. You know that'd be the dream, are y'all? Ava and Lauren? Absolutely not.
LinleyNope.
LaurenHonestly, though, like I wish I was.
Ms. SpearsSo I'm kind of I'm jealous. Yeah, I think it depends on, like when you want your peace right, like in the morning.
Laurenno one's late, yeah you know like, yeah, I love my nighttimes in bed scrolling on my phone. They, they know this. What can I say? Oh, here's a fun one. If you could travel anywhere, where would you go?
Ms. Spearsokay, so I think it would be Italy, okay, specifically, just like I don't want to say I want to move to Italy, that's a little dramatic, but I would like to be there long enough to really experience it. I'm not big on big cities, like I don't enjoy that usually, and so I guess New York is maybe the exception, and so I wouldn't really want to spend a ton of time in Rome, which is like the most controversial thing you know, I guess, but to just experience the little towns. One of my friends lived in northern Italy right after we graduated from college for like six months or something, and because I was in grad school, I couldn't go. None of our breaks were long enough. So, um, that would have been cool, but yeah, I don't know, I think actually that I probably that will be a 2026 or 2027 um trip for me.
LaurenYes, yeah, but I feel like that's the best place. You could go. Northern Italy, small town. Yeah, that's what I would do too. Yeah, that's the best place you could go in northern Italy, small town. Yeah, that's what I would do too.
Ms. SpearsYeah, I just want to you know like live among the locals and struggle through my broken you know ability to speak a foreign language.
LaurenYeah, ride a little bicycle everywhere.
Ms. SpearsExactly Some gelato.
LaurenYes, yes.
Ms. SpearsAbsolutely To have a real pizza and fresh pasta Like yes, that's the dream. Where have you been. So I'm also on a quest, a little side quest of mine to go to every state. Yeah, I do love a quest. Okay, I love a quest. I want to go to every state and I'm just over halfway, I think. Okay, um with that. So, um, like, visit them or just drive through them. Okay, I count it if I spend a night there.
AvaYeah, that's fair.
Ms. SpearsLike not just visiting an airport, not just like I have to sleep there for a night and do something Right.
AvaLike I have to experience something.
Ms. SpearsThat's fair experience something, but outside of the US the only places I've been are Mexico, the UK, france and can take us with you. Yeah, a little like late grad trip, you know, late grad trip really, really late for me.
LaurenYeah, yeah like halfway through college. I would join either way. What's? What's your favorite state so far?
Ms. Spearsokay, so I grew up thinking that I was a beach girl because my mom loves the beach and so we always went to the beach, right? Um, but I don't know. I I spent a lot of time as an adult in the Carolinas and.
Ms. SpearsI love the option to have both right like just within a few hours. Yeah, so I like love Asheville, okay, the like Greenville, south Carolina area, like I just, and then to have those coastal cities like Charleston and Wilmington, like I don't know, kind of best of both worlds vibes, so maybe the Carolinas.
LaurenYes, that's the last place I went to was Asheville.
Ms. SpearsHmm.
LaurenYes.
Ms. SpearsWhat did you do? Did you see the boat more?
LaurenYeah, I did actually go there.
Ms. SpearsYeah, did you go there? Yes, I have been there. I went actually. I went to my one of my best friends from college lives in Greenville and I went to visit her last May. We saw Zach Bryan before he got canceled. Nice, we, I mean that's what happened, um, and we drove like I went a couple of days early and we spent some time in Asheville that's it, we got to Baltimore and, yeah, it's fun do you like to hike? Yeah, absolutely every um.
LaurenOh sorry that's why it wasn't my favorite destination, but it was still good, oh yeah.
Ms. SpearsNo, I love like an outdoor activity kind of vibe. I every summer I go on CLE with students. Yes, so we hike a lot on that trip, so it'd be kind of difficult to not like hiking and do that True.
AvaYeah.
LinleyMiss Spears, is there anything you want to tell us that would like surprise us, that we haven't heard before?
Ms. Spearshmm, I don't know um y'all might know this, but I love Broadway too. Okay, um, so I spend a lot of time watching shows. Um, I'm seeing Mamma Mia this weekend at the Sanger fun um, so I don't know. It's the middle of February and I'm seeing my sixth show for the year.
AvaOh, wow, oh my gosh. Yeah, do you want to list?
Ms. Spearsthem that I've seen this year.
LaurenYeah.
Ms. SpearsYeah, sure, I saw In Juliet.
AvaWas Rachel Ziegler. No, that's not Rachel Ziegler Zegler.
Ms. SpearsI saw that touring in New. Orleans she's in New Orleans so I saw Angelia touring at the Sanger in New Orleans and then, when I was in New York, I saw Six Book of Mormon, moulin Rouge and Hell's Kitchen, which is the. It just won a Grammy on Sunday. It premiered last year. And then I'm seeing Mamma Mia, moulin Rouge and Hell's Kitchen, which is the. It just won a Grammy on Sunday.
AvaOh cool yes.
Ms. SpearsYeah, it premiered last year, so oh, my God yeah and then I'm seeing Mamma Mia.
AvaWhat's the favorite? What's your favorite one?
Ms. SpearsLike all time, yes.
AvaYeah, or that you've seen both. Just do that.
Ms. SpearsOkay, favorite one in general is probably Wicked.
LinleyDuh.
Ms. SpearsBut I don't know, I do love Hamilton as well.
LinleyOh yeah.
Ms. SpearsSo probably Wicked and Hamilton. Those are my top two. My favorite new one is definitely Hell's Kitchen. It is absolutely incredible. Alicia Keys wrote it. Ooh, Some of her music that we all know. Some of it was just written for the show and it was absolutely incredible.
AvaDid you hear there's going to be a Dolly Parton musical?
Ms. SpearsYes, I have been getting all the email updates and I'm trying to figure out how I can go. I love that, yeah, because it's only going to be in Nashville. So actually I was reading about it last night to try and figure it out. Um, my mom also loves Dolly Parton and so, um, she's like, well, we have to figure this out.
LaurenRight, we have to go and take a little trip yeah, absolutely so.
Ms. SpearsUm yeah, that'll just be me. My mom thing, my dad and brother will not accompany us where can we find you on campus? I am upstairs in Mother Alice Hall in the middle kind of of the hallway. It's room 212. Got some comfy couches for students to come in and talk to A little bowl of candy, yeah.
LaurenCome anytime. Come snatch the candy. It's been great talking to you. Thank you so much for joining us, Ms Spears. Thank you all for having me. We'll be right back after this.
