Relationship Astrology ~ Are We Compatible & Why Some Relationships Feel Easy... and Others Don't ✨
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What really makes two people compatible? Is it the Sun sign… or something deeper?
In this episode, I’m sharing why I personally believe the Moon sign matters more than the Sun when it comes to relationships, emotional safety, and long-term compatibility.
We explore the elements as the “operating system” underneath our emotional wiring, why some people naturally understand each other, and how Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Mars all shape the way we connect.
I also share personal stories from my own marriage dynamic, and why astrology can help us approach relationships with a little more compassion and understanding. ✨

Astrology isn't just about signs and symbols, it's a tool for navigating real life. Hello and welcome to Astrology with Alisa. I'm your host Alisa Dixon, and I'm so glad you're here. Let's dive in.
It's always interesting to me how certain astrology themes seem to arrive in waves. I'll suddenly have multiple clients with really similar placements, or several people all working through the same kind of life lesson all at the exact same time. And this week, apparently, it was couples.
I've done several relationship readings lately, looking at people's energies together, how they connect, where they naturally understand each other, where misunderstandings can happen, and how astrology can sometimes help people see each other with a little more compassion. And I genuinely love doing these readings. Relationship astrology is probably one of my favorite things to explore with people.
And it got me thinking about how often I hear different versions of the same exact question: Are we compatible? Or, "I feel like we're good together, but can you see it? Where is it in the chart?" Or, "What signs go together?" Or my personal favorite, "Oh no. I met this guy and he seems so awesome, but he's a Scorpio. What am I gonna do?" And honestly, I get it because the second we meet someone and feel a connection, we want to understand it. Why does this person feel so easy to talk to? Or why does this relationship feel complicated or natural? Why do I keep thinking about this person? Why do I feel pulled toward them in the first place?
And honestly, this has become a whole thing in my family. You guys hear me talk about Will and Lily a lot, my 13 and 10-year-old kids. They're not quite at this stage yet, but my older stepkids, absolutely. Especially my stepdaughter, Cayleen. The second she meets someone, the very next step in the conversation is the chart. Immediately. "Okay wait. What's his birthday? What time was he born? And what city?" And she fully expects me to pull the chart up right then and there. She has literally told guys before, "Hey, my stepmom's an astrologer. I'm gonna need these details." And honestly, if that scares them off, they were probably not the right fit anyway.
Usually though, most people are surprisingly into it because deep down, I think all of us want that special connection energetically to feel like we truly fit with someone on a soul level. And most people, when they first start looking into astrology, begin with the Sun sign, which makes sense. That's what we all know first. I'm an Aries, you're a Leo, he's a Scorpio, whatever it is.
But honestly, when I'm looking at relationship compatibility, the Sun sign is not the first thing I look at because the Sun sign is how you shine out in the world. It's your identity, your expression, your vitality. But your Moon sign, that's who you are when everything else falls away. That's your inner world, your emotional reality, your instincts, your comfort zone, the way you naturally move through life.
Do you wanna go out to dinner or stay home and order in? Do you recharge around people or alone? Are you someone who wants to be out past midnight or in pajamas by 9:00 PM? How do you react when you're overwhelmed? How do you need to be loved when life gets hard? That's Moon sign territory.
And I talked about this a lot last week with my astrology teacher, Pam Gallagher. We talked about how on a good day, we express our Sun sign, but under stress, we revert back to the Moon. And honestly, that's the version the people closest to you usually know best. The Moon is who shows up when you're exhausted, when you're emotional, when you've had a terrible day. That's why I personally think the Moon sign matters more for relationship compatibility. Not because the Sun doesn't matter. It absolutely does. But emotional compatibility? That's Moon territory.
Now, does this mean certain signs are absolutely incompatible? No. Not in my opinion. I've seen beautiful relationships between signs that technically shouldn't work. But certain combinations do require more adjustment, more awareness, more willingness to understand each other.
And the very first thing I look at are the elements because the elements are like an undercurrent. They're like the operating system behind how we naturally move through life. Fire, earth, air, water. And each one has different needs. Last week with Pam, we talked about this in terms of children and Moon signs. Fire Moons need movement. Air Moons need conversation. Earth Moons need grounding and reasoning. And Water Moons need emotional safety. And honestly, that doesn't disappear just because we grow up. We still need those things.
So naturally, the easiest relationships tend to happen when people share compatible elements. People with fire and air placements usually understand each other really naturally because they're both yang energy. Outward moving, busy, expressive. It's like striking a match and then a breeze carries the fire. That's fire and air together. Fast, energetic, social, ideas everywhere, movement, momentum.
Whereas earth and water, that's more like planting a seed. You water it, you nurture it, you wait. It grows slowly, steadily over time. That's a completely different rhythm. Yin energy. Slower to process. More internal. So naturally, earth and water people often understand each other too.
Now, of course, there are nuances. A Sagittarius Moon is different than an Aries Moon, and a Cancer Moon is different than a Pisces Moon. The zodiac sign expresses a little more specifically, but the element creates a foundational understanding.
And then from there, we start layering because once I understand the Moon signs, then I want to see how do they bring their emotions to each other? How do these people communicate? That's Mercury. Mercury is huge in relationships. You can deeply love someone and still struggle to communicate with them.
You may even have a situation where both Mercuries are in compatible elements, but maybe their Mercury is squaring your Moon, and suddenly their words don't land softly for you. You feel criticized or misunderstood or emotionally reactive to how they communicate. This is why relationship astrology gets layered very quickly.
Then we start looking at Venus and Mars. Venus is the softer side of love. What brings you joy and pleasure? What makes you feel valued? What feels beautiful to you? Mars is desire, passion, drive. It's how you pursue things and also how you approach conflict, which, let's be real, eventually makes its way into every relationship.
And traditionally, Mars in a woman's chart often describes the type of masculine energy she's drawn toward. And Venus in a man's chart can describe the kind of feminine energy he naturally gravitates toward. And there are even more nuanced things like the Venus-Mars midpoint, which is considered a point of attraction in the chart and probably could use its own podcast episode sometime.
And this is why I laugh a little bit when people say, "Well, I'm a Taurus and he's a Gemini, so this will never work." Because it's not that simple. Astrology is so much bigger than Sun signs.
For example, my husband and I, I'm an Aries Sun and he's a Capricorn Sun, so technically our Sun signs square each other, which in astrology usually means there's some friction built in. But honestly, I think it just keeps life interesting.
Our Moon signs are Capricorn and Aquarius, so emotionally we both tend to process things in a more detached or stoic way, and that works for us. A deeply emotional Cancer Moon is beautiful, truly. But honestly, neither of us naturally leans toward big emotional processing. We'd both be like, "Okay, but what's the solution?" A Cancer Moon person might feel incredibly unseen in that dynamic, whereas the two of us understand each other's more stoic approach pretty naturally.
And neither approach is right or wrong. It's just different. And that doesn't mean those combinations can't work beautifully together. They absolutely can. It just requires a little more adjustment and a little more understanding from both people.
And this is really the whole point. Compatibility isn't about finding someone exactly like you. It's about understanding how each other works. What each person needs. How each person feels safe. How each person communicates. Where friction may happen and where flow happens naturally.
Because relationships aren't static. They're living things. And astrology can help us understand the emotional blueprint we're bringing into them. So if you've ever wondered why one relationship felt effortless and another one felt exhausting, the answer is usually somewhere much deeper than the Sun sign.
All right, you guys, I hope this gave you a different perspective on compatibility. And truly, relationship readings can make such a fun gift for a couple or even a really unique date night activity to do together. I had an absolute blast with the couples I worked with this week, and each time I found some really interesting synchronicity in the charts, which honestly usually happens.
And as a side note, speaking of astrology themes coming in waves, about 80% of the solar return cards that people have ordered lately have had Leo Moons for the year, which is extra funny to me because my solar return Moon this year is also in Leo. Wild synchronicity. 📍 So apparently Leo Moon energy is really moving through the collective around me right now.
So if you or someone you love has a birthday coming up, those personalized solar return cards are available on both my website and my Etsy store. I'll leave links to both of those in the show notes.
And if you missed last week's episode with my teacher, Pam Gallagher, definitely go back and give that one a listen too. We talked a lot about Moon signs and emotional patterns, which really ties in beautifully with today's episode.
And if you'd ever like to explore your own chart or relationship dynamics more deeply, please reach out or you can visit my website and book a reading.
As always, I love and appreciate you all. Thanks again for listening. Take care, and I'll see you next time.
