This is Tim Detellis. Welcome to Jesus Guys, brought to you by menofbravery.com. Jesus Guys is a discipleship lifestyle, and this is week number four. And the question and the theme for this week is where did Jesus spend his time? And so there'll be seven scripture readings during this week, but today I want to talk to you about one of them in particular. But before I do that, I just want to emphasize that time is the commodity that is irreplaceable. You can go out and earn more money, but you can't go earn more time. And so where you spend your time, it really shows what you value and what matters to you. And also who you share your time with. That's who you're investing, probably your greatest available resource with. So one of the things that's been really interesting, interesting to me about the life of Jesus and the disciples, the Jesus guys that spent time with him, was a lot of the time Jesus spent time with in the places he went, they were just following. You know, Jesus said, Come follow me. And he wasn't always pushy for them to do what he was doing. It was more just observing what he was doing and where he was. So I want to read from uh the Gospel of Mark, chapter 14, verses uh 32 through 37, and it says that they went to a place called Gethsemane, and Jesus said to his disciples, Sit here while I pray. He took Peter, James, and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death, he said to them. Stay here and keep watch. Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed, that if possible the hour might pass from him. Abba Father, he said, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me, yet not what I will, but what you will. Jesus knew he had to have time in deep prayer and surrender to his heavenly father. And where he spent that time was away from people. And a lot of us spend our time with people. And even as we talk about being Jesus, guys, and following Jesus, or even understanding that he spent time with his disciples, even when he was with his disciples, he was separating himself to just have time with his heavenly father. So this is the Son of God. Where did Jesus spend his time? What's been very impressive to me is how much time Jesus spent with his father. Even for Jesus, discipleship wasn't the top priority. It was a priority. And it was even a part of the Great Commission. After he rose from the dead, he did say, go and make disciples. But if you look at the life of Jesus, where did he spend his time? A lot of it was alone. Spending time with his father and having a true, honest, deep relationship, expressing his pain, expressing his feelings, expressing his honest concerns. And so I want to encourage us today, wherever you are, who do you spend time with? Where do you spend time? And are we spending time with the person in the relationship that matters most? Because as we are drawing near to God through relationship with Jesus, it will affect all the other relationships that we have. One of the other observations about time is the word energy. I know that Jesus not only walked everywhere, had time on a boat, maybe, right? Maybe he had some time on a donkey or another animal that was moving them from point A to point B, but ultimately it was a physically exhausting lifestyle. The environment, the place in which he lived and traveled was not as easy and comfortable as ours. So that makes me beg the question for my own lifestyle. How am I managing my energy? And then optimizing the fact that I'm not exerting energy to go from point A to point B. You know, and so we do have a lot of time available because of commuting, traveling, and moving around. And I do a lot of travel on airplanes and you know, commuting to the office, and I'm finding that I'm trying to make sure that I leverage that time and don't waste that time. And then more importantly, understanding the value of the energy saved and then also how to replenish the energy spent. Because much of what Jesus was modeling for us was that it was he was going away to refresh, recharge, just to rest. And that's an area I believe as a disciple that we can tend to overlook. Time with God, time in rest, it fuels us to be able to be with others better. But we can often not serve ourselves well or lead ourselves well, but in reality, we have to disciple ourselves, or I would like to use the root word of discipleship to be discipline, where we have to discipline ourselves to take the time to rest and have relationship with God. I'll say that again. We have to take the time to rest and have relationship with God. This is what Jesus was showing his disciples. This is what they were observing. Jesus was spending his time with his father and resting. It doesn't sound like a huge performance initiative, does it? But for many of us, in our spiritual walk, that's kind of what we're on. We're on the spiritual treadmill. When maybe we need to look a little bit closer at the life of Jesus and model what he was showing his disciples. Something to think about this week. Week four has me kind of in a pause moment. Pausing to ask the question Am I spending enough time alone with my Heavenly Father? And am I spending enough time in a place that replenishes my energy? Well, until next week, remember God has you right where he wants you to grow closer to him. So don't miss out that opportunity. And invite others to be on this journey with you.
