When I was a kid, my parents drove me up to Hanalei on Kauai so I could hula dance to Hanalei Moon right at the water's edge at sunset. I remember standing there watching the mountains turn pink and orange and feeling absolutely certain that nowhere else on earth could look like this. I was right, and I've been going back ever since. North Shore Kauai is my favorite part of my favorite island, and today I wanna walk you through everything you need to know before you go. Whether you're planning to stay up there for your whole Kauai trip or you're based somewhere else on the island and want to make the drive for the day, both are worth doing and both require planning that a lot of people skip. We're gonna cover it all. Welcome back to Hawaii Travel Made Easy. I'm Marcie. My mom lives on Kauai, and I've been to the island more times than I can count, and the North Shore is where I feel most at home when I'm there, so this one's personal. Go ahead and bookmark that now North Shore Kauai is made up of three main areas: Princeville, Hanalei, and Kilauea. Quick note on that last one. Kilauea is also the name of the famous volcano on the Big Island. Completely different island, completely different place. The Kilauea we're talking about today is a small residential town on Kauai's north coast. Just wanna head that off before someone books a flight to Hawaii Island by mistake. Each of these three towns has its own feel. Princeville is at the resort end, clifftop views, golf courses, the widest range of accommodations at every price point. Hanalei is a surfer town with maybe five streets and a pace of life that makes you wanna cancel your return flight. And Kilauea is the residential one, where people actually live, and where a morning can feel less like tourism and more like just being somewhere real. The whole area sits under these extraordinary green mountains, and those mountains create weather. North Shore gets significantly more rain than the south or east sides of the island. That rain is exactly why everything looks so lush and dramatic, why there are waterfalls running down every ridge after a storm, why the whole place feels almost impossibly green. You pack a light rain jacket, you accept that a cloudy morning can turn into a perfect afternoon, and you stop fighting it. Once you stop fighting it, you get it. One thing that surprises first-time visitors, you can't drive all the way around Kauai. The road ends at the Na Pali Coast cliffs on the northwest side. North Shore is as far as you can go. You drive in, you explore, and you drive back out. That dead end... The dead end is part of what keeps it feeling like somewhere you've earned. So how do you get there? You fly into Lihue Airport on the southeast side of the island. The drive to North Shore takes about 45 to 60 minutes, depending on traffic. You need a rental car. There's really no way around it up there. I always book through Discount Hawaii Car Rental because they compare all the major companies, and I consistently find better rates there than booking direct. That link is at hawaiitravelwithkids.com under Hawaii Resources. On your way to Hanalei, you'll cross a one-lane bridge. It's historic, it's charming, and it can also close on you. When it rains hard up here-- Kuhio Highways near the bridge can shut down with little or no warning. It happened during the Kona storms in March 2026, and it happens most winters. If you're planning a day trip from the south side and you wake up to a flash flood warning, check road conditions before you commit to the drive. Not a reason to skip North Shore, just something to know going in. So the question I hear more than almost anything for Kauai is whether it's worth staying on the North Shore and whether you can just drive up for the day, and the honest answer is It depends on when you're going. North Shore is the wetter side of the island, and in winter, roughly November through March, it can be seriously rainy, and the surf gets big enough that a lot of beaches aren't swimmable. I don't recommend basing yourself up here in winter. You'll spend most of your trip watching rain from a beautiful rental and wishing you were in Poipu. If you're traveling in the winter months, stay on the south side and do a day trip or two up north when the weather cooperates. Late spring through early fall is a different story. That's when North Shore is at its best, And if you can stay up here for even three nights during those months, the whole experience shifts. You're not racing the clock. You catch the beaches before the day-trippers arrive. You end up at the Hanalei Valley lookout at sunrise when the taro fields are covered in mist, and there's nobody else at the pull-out. That's a different trip than any day trip can give you Oh, for where to stay, I have a full episode on the best areas on Kauai. Short version, Princeville if you want resort amenities and the most selection, Hanalei town if you wanna walk to restaurants and wake up close to the water, Kilauea if you want to feel like a temporary local rather than a tourist. All the links are at hawaiitravelwithkids.com under Hawaii Resources. One thing on vacation rentals, Kauai has strict short-term rental rules. Any rental needs to be in a designated visitor destination area or hold a grandfathered permit. Stick to established platforms and property listed, and properly listed properties. If something looks suspiciously cheap and seems to be outside those areas, walk away. People have shown up to rentals that got shut down mid-trip, and that's a ruined vacation that was completely avoidable. If you're day tripping, give North Shore at least a full day, ideally two. Hanalei Bay in the morning, Ha'ena State Park if you've planned ahead, eat your way through town in the afternoon. Which brings me to one thing you absolutely have to sort out first. If there's one thing in this entire episode you need to actually do something about, it's Ha'ena State Park. This is where more North Shore trips fall apart than anywhere else, and it's completely preventable. Ha'ena is home to Ke'e Beach at the very end of the road, the Hanakapiai Trail, and the start of the Kalalau Trail along the Na Pali Coast. It's one of the most beautiful places I've ever been in my life. It also requires advanced reservations for everyone who isn't a Hawaii resident. You cannot just show up and park, and the parking reservations are nearly impossible to get. I know this because I tried. I was hosting a retreat for a group of travel bloggers on Kauai, and I wanted us all to go to Ha'ena together. I set an alarm for midnight. I had multiple browsers open. I was completely ready and I still couldn't get morning parking spots. They were gone within seconds. So I pivoted to the shuttle and a couple of people grumbled about the cost at first. Then we got there and every single one of them said it was better than driving would've been Here's how the Go Haena Shuttle works. You book at gohaena.com. It takes about five minutes, and the current twenty twenty-six pricing is forty dollars per adult. That's anyone sixteen and up, and twenty-five dollars for kids ages four through thir- four through fifteen. Ages three and under ride free on your lap. You park at the Waipa Park and Ride. The lot is free, and the shuttle takes you out to the park and back. The ride is about thirty to forty minutes each way, and both times I've done it, the drivers have been fantastic. They play music. They point things out along the way. They make the ride feel like part of the day. The first time I did it with my son, the driver played Never Gonna Give You Up on the way back, and the whole shuttle was singing. My kid talked about it for months. He called it the party bus to the beach. The best thing about the shuttle is the return flexibility. You don't pick a return time when you book. You just show up at the stop when you're ready and hop on the next one. They run every twenty minutes. On the blogger trip, half the group wanted to hike and then spend the afternoon at the beach. I wanted to get back to Princeville to shower before dinner. We just took different shuttles. No one had to compromise. No one got stranded. It was completely fine. Book an early morning departure, and you have the whole day ahead of you. If you book afternoon, you're arriving late and limiting yourself, so go early. If you wanna try for a parking spot instead, reservations open exactly thirty days in advance at midnight Hawaii time. Have your card ready and know that you might still not get one. The shuttle's a better experience for most people anyway. Just take the shuttle. One more thing here. The March twenty twenty-six Kona storms caused landslides that shut down sections of the Kalalau Trail for repairs. It's back open now, but that's a good reminder that trail conditions up here change fast. Always check gohaena.com before you go for current status on both the shuttle and the trail. That's good advice any time of year, not just after a storm. Once you're there, Ke'e Beach is a lagoon with calm water in summer, good for snorkeling. Winter surf makes it unsafe for swimming. The first mile of the Hanakapiai Trail is doable for most people, though it earns its difficulty. My son hiked it in his swimsuit at eight years old with a running commentary about every uphill section. The full trail to Hanakapiai Falls is four miles each way, gorgeous and a real commitment. Check conditions if there's been significant rain. That April blogger trip, the trail was muddy and slippery, and a few people slid down sections on the way back. Not the plan, but a good story. If conditions look rough, stay at the beach. The beach is wonderful. Sort Haena first, then build the rest of your day around it. With Haena sorted, the rest of North Shore beaches are all different and worth knowing before you go. Hanalei Bay is the one you've seen in every photo, a two-mile crescent of beach with mountains dropping straight down to the water behind it. My kids asked to go back every single day we're on Kauai. The water is calm enough for actual swimming, which on Kauai is not a given, and there's a pier they love walking out and ducking underneath. Lifeguards are on duty. Get there before 9:00 in the morning or after 3:00 in the afternoon and parking is manageable. It's a beach where you can stay all day and feel like that was exactly the right call. If you want professional photos while you're there, and Hanalei Bay is an almost unfair backdrop for it, I've done two Flytographer sessions there, one with my whole family and one with a group of girlfriends. You get 60 to 90 minutes with a professional photographer, 40 to 60 edited photos back within a week, and actual pictures of everyone together instead of whoever got stuck holding the phone all trip. Tunnels Beach, also called Makua, is about a mile before Ke'e and does not require any Hana State Park reservations. This is one of the most common points of confusion I hear. So Ke'e Beach is at the very end of the road, and it needs a reservation. Tunnels, a mile before it, does not. Park at Haena Beach Park Walk the beach five or 10 minutes and you're there. In summer, the snorkeling is some of the best on the island. You're swimming over lava tube tunnels covered in coral and green sea turtles everywhere. Winter brings strong surf and currents. Go before 8:00 in the morning because parking fills fast, and the county actively tickets roadside parking. They mean it. If you don't have your own snorkel gear, there are rental shops in Hanalei and Princeville. Anini Beach is the one I send families with little kids. It has the most protected swimming in all of North Shore, nearly flat calm with a fringing reef that keeps the water quiet. Great for snorkeling, great for toddlers, great for anyone who wants to float in the ocean without getting knocked around. And Secret Beach in Kilauea is backed by dramatic black cliffs and feels like somewhere you've discovered rather than somewhere you drove to. Not a great swimming beach, but at low tide when you can walk the shoreline, it's one of the most striking spots on the island. All right, a few things I'd feel bad leaving out. Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge is worth a dedicated stop. It's open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 AM to 4 PM. Note that the gate closes at 3:30, so you need to arrive before then. Reservations are required through recreation.gov for anyone 16 and up. Admission is $10 per adult plus a dollar booking fee. Kids 15 and under are free and don't need a reservation. You'll see seabird colonies nesting on the sea cliffs, including one of the largest red-footed booby colonies in the world. And from November through April, you can spot humpback whales from the bluff. Each reservation slot is 45 minutes, so if you want more time, book two consecutive slots and bring binoculars. Limahuli Garden is right near Haena, and it snuck up on me the first time I went. Terraced gardens in a valley with Makana Mountain, the peak you know as Bali Hai from the movie South Pacific, rising directly behind it. The self-guided walk is about three-quarters of a mile, and you learn about native Hawaiian plants and traditional agriculture in a setting that is almost absurdly beautiful. Book ahead at ntbg.org. It's $20 for adults and worth every bit of it for the backdrop alone Okay, so people ask me about helicopter tours over the Na Pali Coast constantly, and I'm gonna be straight with you. I haven't personally done one, so I'm not the right person to send you to a specific company. They're popular, they exist, and if it's something you're drawn to, do your research on safety records and recent reviews and make your own call. And the Hanalei Valley Lookout, which is free and takes two minutes and will hold you there for 20. It's a pullout on Highway 560 just before town. Taro fields below, mountains behind, waterfalls on every ridge after rain. Pull over every time you drive past it. And if you're up there on a Saturday morning, the Hanalei Farmers Market at the Waipua Foundation is worth a stop. Local produce, food vendors, a real glimpse into what makes this community feel like a community. All right, let's talk about food. My kids beg for North Shore food from 3,000 miles away in Seattle, so let me start there. Holy Grail is a red food truck in Hanalei. Taro-based donuts fried in coconut oil with Rotating flavors like passion fruit, salted maple, Hawaiian vanilla bean. They're naturally vegan, but you would never know it. My kids ask about these donuts when we haven't been to Kauai in months. Go right at 7:00 when they open. By 9:00 on weekends, you're in a real line. Wishing Well Shave Ice has been parked in a converted bus at the entrance to Hanalei since 1983. Organic syrups made from actual fruit. Ice shaved so fine it's almost like snow. Get the macadamia nut ice cream at the bottom and coconut cream on top. The first time I brought my kids there, They looked at each other like every other shave ice they'd had before was a lie. Open 9:30 to around 6:00, but they close randomly sometimes, so don't anchor your afternoon to it. Postcards Cafe is where I go when I want a real dinner. It's inside a plantation cottage from the 1860s. Organic seafood, creative preparations, the kind of meal where you linger. It's open Tuesday through Saturday evenings, seating from 5:00 to 9:00, and you need a reservation. Tahiti Nui has been around since 1963 and still has that authentic old Hawaii energy that's hard to find anywhere. Strong mai tais, locally caught fish, live music every night at 6:30. George Clooney's character in The Descendants spent time here, which makes complete sense. It's closed on Saturdays, which catches almost everyone off guard, so check before you show up. Their Wednesday luau is small and intimate compared to the resort versions, and I mean that as a compliment. And just grab poke and musubi from one of the general stores in Hanalei and eat it at the beach. Some days that's the best meal up there. Don't overthink it. All right, a few things that save people from expensive surprises. Most North Shore vacation rentals have three to seven-night minimums, and around the holidays that often stretches to seven or fourteen. Hawaii also adds about eighteen percent in taxes to accommodation costs. So a rental listed at three hundred dollars a night can feel quite different by checkout. Factor that in when you're comparing options. If you're hiking the Kalalau Trail past Hanakapiai Beach and camping overnight, you need a separate permit through camping.ehawaii.gov. That's thirty-five dollars per adult per night and opens ninety days in advance. Don't show up without it.
