Lamps Without Oil | Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional | Matthew 25:1-3
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In Matthew 25:1–3, Jesus gives a warning that should stop every believer in their tracks:
Not everyone who looks ready actually is.
All ten virgins had lamps.
All of them looked prepared.
All of them were waiting for the bridegroom.
But only five had oil.
And that oil was the difference between appearance and actual readiness.
This is a sobering reminder that it’s possible to look like a Christian on the outside—go to church, know the language, post the verses, carry the image—while lacking a real, living, daily relationship with God on the inside.
When life is easy, that difference can stay hidden.
But when the wait gets long…
When the pressure comes…
When trials hit…
The truth gets exposed.
The wise prepared for the wait.
The foolish assumed they’d be fine.
Jesus is reminding us that faith isn’t about being around spiritual things. It’s about being filled with what actually sustains you when the Bridegroom comes.
Big Question:
Is your faith mostly outward—or are you truly cultivating it with God in private?
Challenge:
Spend 15 intentional minutes with God today before anything else. Open Scripture, pray honestly, and ask Him to strengthen your faith so your lamp keeps burning.
Prayer:
Lord, keep my heart awake and ready. Guard me from a faith that only looks real on the outside. Fill me with Your Spirit and teach me to walk closely with You so that when You come, my lamp is still burning. Amen.
All right, and this is a warning for anyone who identifies as a follower of Christ. Hey, welcome to the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional. Hey, Restoring Warriors, we're a men's ministry. We're dedicated to helping equip men to become disciples of Jesus Christ. All right, men who live boldly in their communities, boldly in their families, and share the gospel. All right, and every week we gather together in Denver, Colorado, but we're currently launching new small groups across the nation while also building an online community. So hey, if you feel called to start a group or you've ever felt like you wanted to lead a men's group, we provide you with all the curriculum and everything you'll ever need to host your small group. But if you want to join a group, if you want to connect with us on our online platform, just go to restoringwarriors.com, click find a group, and we can direct you from there. All right, today we're diving back into the book of Matthew, where we've made it to chapter 25. All right, Matthew 25, and we're in verses one through three here, where Jesus starts telling the parable of the Ten's bridesmaids. So we're going to go into the first couple lines of that. All right, verses one through three, chapter 25. At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five of them were wives. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. Man, how could you leave the oil? All right, so Jesus, he paints this powerful picture of readiness. All right, all ten women, they looked prepared. They all had lamps. They were all waiting for the bridegroom, and from the outside there was no difference between them, right? But five carried oil and five did not. The oil was the difference between appearance and preparedness. All right, and this is a warning for anyone who identifies as a follower of Christ. All right, it's possible to carry the lamp of faith outwardly. All right, we can attend church, we can post verses, we can speak the Christian language. You know, the ones of you who do that. Yet yet we lack the inner oil that sustains a real relationship with God. All right, when life is calm, the difference is hard to see. But when the delay stretches long or trials come, then the truth is revealed. All right. The wise, they prepared for the way. The foolish, they just assume they'd be fine. All right, and Jesus is reminding us that faith isn't about proximity to spiritual things, it's about personal readiness and it's about endurance. All right, oil can't be borrowed at the last minute. And a relationship with God is cultivated daily through prayer, scripture, obedience, and surrender. All right, so the question this parable asks every man is simple. When the bridegroom comes, will your lamp still be burning? All right, now take out a journal. Let's take the next five or ten minutes or so and journal on this question and see what comes up. Invite the Holy Spirit into this process, see what gets stirred up inside of you. All right, here it is. Is your faith something you mainly show outwardly, or is it something you actively cultivate with God in private every single day? All right, and here's your daily challenges to spend intentional time today filling your lamp. All right, set 15 minutes aside for prayer and scripture before anything else in your day. Ask God to strengthen your faith so that it burns steadily, even when life becomes difficult. Let's pray. Hey, Lord, keep my heart awake and prepared. Hey, God guard me from living a life that only looks faithful on the outside. Fill me with your spirit so that my faith is real, steady, and enduring. Teach me to walk with you daily so that when you come, my lamp is burning bright. It's in the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Hey, thank you for tuning in to this devotional.
