Staying Steady When You’re Hurt | Matthew 26:20–21 | Strength Under Pressure
In Gospel of Matthew 26:20–21, Jesus Christ sits at the table knowing betrayal is coming. He knows exactly what Judas Iscariot is about to do—yet He stays steady.
No outburst.
No public exposure.
No emotional reaction.
He stays grounded, keeps serving, and continues walking in obedience.
This is a different kind of strength than most men are taught.
We’re wired to react—defend, withdraw, or retaliate when we’re hurt. But Jesus models something deeper: strength under control. The ability to stay anchored when emotions rise and pain hits.
Because real strength isn’t found in reaction.
It’s revealed in restraint.
Every man will face betrayal, disappointment, or frustration. The question is not if—it’s how you respond when it happens.
Will you react… or remain steady?
In this message, we cover:
– What real strength looks like in moments of pain
– How to respond instead of react
– Why emotional control is essential for leadership
– Staying faithful to your purpose when you’re hurt
Stay at the table. Stay grounded. Stay obedient.

But Jesus, he models a completely different kind of strength, one that's rooted in emotional control. Welcome back. This is the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional where every day we challenge men to boldly spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Hey, right now we are currently expanding our powerful online community. It's called Restored Kingdom Brotherhood. If you're looking for online discipleship, if you're looking for other brothers who are chasing after Christ just like you are, head over to Restoring Warriors.com, hit join a group, and you can find all the information there. We'll direct you from there. Hey, we're back in the book of Matthew. We're in chapter 26, verses 20 and 21. When evening came, Jesus was reclining at the table with the twelve. And while they were eating, he said, Truly I tell you, one of you will betray me. Yeah, so Jesus wasn't a surprise to him. He knew exactly what Judas was about to do. He understood the betrayal was coming, and he understood all of the pain that he was about to face. It was real. Yet he remained steady. He didn't lash out at Judas. He didn't kick him off out of the room or anything like that. He didn't expose him publicly or allow his emotions to control in the moment. No, instead, he stayed at the table. He continued serving and he kept moving forward in obedience to his mission. Right. And that kind of steadiness, it reveals a deeper definition of strength. A lot of guys think that strength is reacting quickly, it's defending themselves, it's raising their voice, it's shutting people out. It's shutting people out when it when they feel wronged. But Jesus, he models a completely different kind of strength. One that's rooted in emotional control and clarity of his purpose. Real strength is the ability to remain grounded when all of your heart is hurting, and it's to keep your character intact when circumstances tempt you to respond out of a position of anger. And every man in their life is going to face disappointment. They're going to face betrayal, a deep hurt at some point. That's just part of life. And in those moments, the instinct is often to withdraw, maybe to withdraw and isolate, or maybe it's immediately to raise your voice and retaliate. Yet this passage reminds us that pain doesn't have to dictate our behavior. No, staying steady means choosing integrity and faithfulness, even when your emotions are running high. And it means continuing to lead, continuing to serve, and walk in purpose despite the hurt that you're feeling. All right, take out your journals. Let's take five or ten minutes here and let's really journal on this question here and see what see what the Holy Spirit convicts you with here. Where in your life right now, do you need to stay steady instead of reacting emotionally? And here's a daily challenge for you today. The next time you feel hurt or frustrated, pause before responding. Take a deep breath and say a short prayer and choose a response that reflects strength and self-control. And finally, let's pray. Jesus, you understand betrayal and pain more than anyone. Lord, teach me to stay steady when I'm hurt. Guard my heart from bitterness, guard my reactions, and help me respond with strength, with wisdom, and with grace, Lord. It's in your name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
