Search Me First | Matthew 26:22–23 | The Danger of Hidden Drift

In Gospel of Matthew 26:22–23, Jesus Christ tells His disciples that one of them will betray Him. And their response is revealing.

They don’t point fingers.
They don’t start accusing each other.
One by one, they ask: “Surely you don’t mean me, Lord?”

That question reveals humility.

The disciples understood something many men forget: even devoted men can drift if they stop examining their hearts. Betrayal rarely begins with one dramatic moment. It starts with small compromises left unchecked.

Pride says, “I would never do that.”
Wisdom says, “Lord, search me.”

Strong men don’t assume they’re above failure. They stay vigilant. They invite God to expose motives, habits, blind spots, and compromises before those things grow into something bigger.

Because the safest man in the room isn’t the most confident one.
It’s the man who keeps bringing his heart before God.

In this message, we cover:
– Why humility protects men from spiritual drift
– The danger of unchecked compromise
– How pride blinds us to our own condition
– What it looks like to regularly invite God to examine your heart

Don’t just examine others.
Let God search you first.

It begins with small compromises that go unchecked. Hey, welcome back to the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional where every day we boldly challenge men to step into their calling and spread the gospel of Jesus Christ. Hey, right now we're currently expanding our online community. We've got a powerful discipleship, a brotherhood that's growing quickly over on the school platform. Hey, to get involved, head over to restoring warriors.com, click join a group, and we will direct you from there. Can't wait to see you over there. All right, we're back in the book of Matthew, uh chapter 26, verses 22 and 23, it says, They were very sad and began to say to him one after the other, Surely you don't mean me, Lord. Jesus replied, The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me. All right, so when Jesus said that one of them would betray him, the disciples didn't start pointing fingers at each other. They started searching their own hearts. One by one, they asked, Surely, Lord, you you don't mean me. And I think that question, it reveals it reveals humility in all of the disciples. It shows an awareness that even the devoted men are capable of drifting. And if they stop paying attention to their hearts, even more so. Right? Strong men don't assume that they're they're above failure. In fact, I think the strongest men know that they can uh fall back at any moment. Strong men stay vigilant. They invite God to examine all of their motives, to examine their habits, to examine their integrity. Right? Betrayal rarely begins with a dramatic decision. You don't just wake up one day and say, hey, I'm gonna betray my best friend. No, it begins with small compromises that go unchecked. All right, pride says, I'd never do that, where wisdom says, Lord, search me, search my heart. But if we want to lead well, all right, if we want to lead well in our homes, in our work, in our faith, then we have to stay honest about our condition. All right, the safest man in the room isn't the one who feels confident, it's the one who continues to bring his heart to be searched before the Lord. All right, hey, take a moment, take five minutes here, take ten minutes, pull out a journal and reflect on this question, invite the Holy Spirit into this process. I urge you and see what comes up for you, see what kind of conviction the Spirit leads with uh this morning. Where in your life do you need to stop assuming that you're strong and that you've got it all together, and start asking God to examine your heart? And here's a daily challenge. Spend five minutes today in quiet time asking God to search your heart. All right, write down one area where you sense some conviction and then take one concrete step today to address it. Let's pray. Lord, search my heart and reveal anything in me that's drifting away from you. Lord, give me the humility to face the truth, courage to make changes, and strength to walk in integrity with you, Lord. Lord, keep me close to you and guard me from compromise. In Jesus' name, amen. Hey, thank you so much for tuning in today. If you are encouraged by this devotional, I encourage you to send it to another brother.
