Put Your Sword Away | Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional | Matthew 26:51

In this episode, we unpack one of the most revealing moments in the Garden of Gethsemane. As Jesus is being arrested, Peter reaches for his sword and strikes the servant of the high priest. To Peter, it felt justified. The pressure was real. The threat was obvious. The response seemed natural.
But Jesus immediately tells him: “Put your sword away.”
This teaching challenges men to examine the weapons they instinctively reach for when life gets hard. Maybe it’s not a literal sword—but it could be anger, control, defensiveness, pride, emotional shutdown, escapism, or intimidation.
When pressure rises, our flesh wants to react. Jesus calls us to something greater.
You’ll hear:
• Why Peter’s reaction mirrors how many men respond to pressure today
• The difference between strength and aggression
• How fleshly reactions sabotage spiritual victories
• Why self-control is a mark of true biblical masculinity
• How Jesus modeled strength through restraint, surrender, and obedience
Many men believe strength means reacting quickly, taking control, or fighting back. But Jesus demonstrates a different kind of power—strength that remains under control even in the face of betrayal, injustice, and chaos.
This episode will help you identify the "swords" you may still be carrying and challenge you to replace reaction with wisdom, prayer, and Spirit-led leadership.
Plus, we close with a practical reflection, challenge, and prayer to help you respond to conflict with maturity instead of impulse.
If you're tired of letting anger, fear, or control dictate your responses and want to become a man who leads with strength and self-control, this episode is for you.
Listen, share, and learn what it means to put the sword away and trust God with the battle.
Maybe not a literal sword like Peter, but we still reach for ours, right? Some some dead. Hey, welcome back to the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional, where every day we challenge men to boldly pursue their calling to God's place on their life. We're diving back into the book of Matthew, but before we do, we're building out a powerful online Restoring Warriors community, and we want to invite you to it. Head over to RestoringWarriors.com, click on join a group, and we'll direct you to the online community. All right, we're in chapter 26 of the book of Matthew. This is verse number 51 today. With that, one of Jesus' companions reached for his sword, drew it out, and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. Man, all right, so Peter in this moment, he thought that he was defending Jesus. And in his mind, pulling out the sword, it made a lot of sense. People are coming at him. We should fight him, right? His Savior was being portrayed right in front of him, and the crowd was closing in. Pressure was mounting. All right, so he reacted in the way that so many men naturally do. When fear, when pain, when chaos hit, we like to search for our weapon. Right? And maybe not a literal sword like Peter, but we still reach for ours, right? Some men reach towards their anger. Some men reach to control the situation. Some use intimidation, they use sarcasm, they shut down, they use pride, lust, alcohol, or they build emotional walls. All right, when pressure comes, the flesh wants to fight back quickly. Jesus immediately tells Peter, put your sword away. Put your sword away, Peter. Why does he do that? It's because Peter was trying to accomplish a spiritual mission through fleshly reactions. And a lot of us do the same thing today. All right, we we say we want healing, we want restoration, we want leadership, we want peace in our households and a deeper intimacy with God. But the moment any sort of conflict comes, we grab our old weapons again. A sharp tongue, a quick temper. We're defensive, our escapism. We try to control the situation. And the problem is that worldly weapons, they might them win temporary battles while silently destroying a deeper war that's happening inside of us. And Jesus, he showed a different kind of strength in that garden. A different kind of strength. He had every ability to stop the arrest. He's Jesus. He could do what he wanted. He had authority, he had power, he had legions of angels available at his disposal. But true strength, his true strength, it was revealed in that moment when he restrained. When he surrendered, when he showed obedience to the Father and His plan. Some of the strongest men that I know are the ones who pause before speaking, the ones who have prayer, solid prayer before they react to things and they surrender their flesh before it turns into harm on the people that are around them. So maybe today God's asking you the same thing that he asked Peter. Put the sword away. All right, pull out your journals. We're going to do a reflection question here. All right, take five to ten minutes on this and see what comes up. Journal with this. Invite the Holy Spirit into this process with you. What sword do you instinctively reach for when pressure, conflict, or fear shows up in your life? All right, and your challenge for today is the next time you feel emotionally triggered today, pause before you react. Just have a moment of pause. Pray first. Ask God to help you respond in strength, in wisdom, and in self-control instead of fleshly impulse. All right, let's pray. Jesus, reveal the areas of my life where I still reach for worldly weapons instead of trusting you. Teach me to lead with wisdom, restraint, and surrender. Help me put away anger, pride, defensiveness, control, and become a man that's led by your spirit instead of led by my emotions. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Hey, thank you for tuning in today.
