Betrayal is a painful reality of human life. We’ve all experienced the sting of friends who disappear when things get hard, family members who wound us, or relationships that collapse. In today’s devotional, we look at Matthew 26:56, where even the disciples—those who walked with and learned from Jesus—deserted Him in His darkest hour.

If our foundation is built on the expectation that people will never disappoint us, we will constantly feel shattered. But this passage reminds us that while biblical brotherhood is a gift and a necessity, it was never meant to replace God.

In this video, we explore:
Why even perfect love from Jesus didn't produce perfect loyalty from others.
The danger of letting human disappointment harden your heart toward community or God.
Why Christ—not other men—must be the ultimate source of your identity, security, and trust.
Reflection Question:

Have you allowed disappointment from people to harden your heart toward biblical brotherhood or toward God Himself?

Daily Challenge:

Ask God to heal one area of betrayal or disappointment you still carry, and intentionally reach out to one trustworthy brother today instead of isolating yourself.

Humans are flawed. Leaders fail us. Relationships collapse. Sometimes. All right, welcome back to the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional where every day we challenge men to step into their calling that God has placed in their lives. All right, click join a group, and from there we will direct you to our powerful online brotherhood community. All right, get engaged, get involved, drop a prayer request. We'd love to do uh more dedicated and intentional discipleship with you. All right, Matthew 26, verse 56. But this has all taken place at the writings of the prophet must be fulfilled. Then all of the disciples deserted him and fled. Man, that's in the moment that Jesus is getting arrested in the garden. All right, this is, I think, one of the most painful realities of human life is betrayal. The same disciples who walked with Jesus, they learned from him, they swore loyalty to him. They all abandoned him in his darkest moment. All right, Peter would end up denying him. Judas, he'd already betrayed him, and the rest of them, they all fled in fear. And if we're honest, most of us, most of us as men, we know that pain. We know it personally because friends disappear when life gets hard. Right? Family, they tend to wound us. All right, humans are flawed, leaders fail us, relationships collapse. Sometimes the people that we trust the most and that we've trusted the most with everything become the source of our deepest scars. And this passage, it teaches us something really important. Even perfect love from Jesus didn't produce perfect loyalty from the people he gave it to. People are fearful, man. They're self-protected, they're broken by sin. If your entire foundation is built on people never disappointing you, you live constantly shattered. That's just the reality of it. But Jesus, he still chose brotherhood knowing all of this. He still discipled men, he still loved deeply, he still served fully, and he walked in community knowing that betrayal was possible. Now, why would he do that? Because biblical brotherhood is still necessary. He's modeling that for us. All right, but it was never meant to replace God. All right, brotherhood is a very great gift. But Jesus is the foundation. Men will fail you sometimes. They just will. You will fail others sometimes, but Jesus never changes. Jesus never abandons us. He never lies. All right, he never disappears and he never walks away when things start to get difficult. The strongest brotherhood is built when both men understand that Christ, not each other, is the ultimate source of identity, security, and trust. I'm gonna ask you to pull out your journals, take five or ten minutes really quickly, all right, and journal on this question I'm about to ask you. All right, have you allowed disappointment from people to harden your heart towards biblical brotherhood, or even worse, towards God Himself? All right, and I'm gonna hit you with the daily challenge today is ask God to heal one area of betrayal or disappointment that you still carry around. All right, and intentionally reach out to one trustworthy brother, somebody you have in your life, instead of isolating yourself around it. All right, let's pray. Jesus, thank you so much for remaining faithful, even when people tend to continue to fail. Lord, heal the wounds that are caused by betrayal and teach me to place my ultimate trust in you alone. Help me build healthy brotherhood that's rooted in grace, that's rooted in honesty, accountability, and Christ-centered love. It's in your name, Jesus, we pray. Amen.
