Do you settle for secondhand faith? In this video, we dive into the irony of Matthew 27:9-10, where the religious leaders knew the Scriptures inside and out, yet missed the Word made flesh standing right in front of them.
It’s a sobering reminder for us today. With endless access to podcasts, sermons, and Christian content, it’s easy to rely on someone else’s understanding of God instead of opening the Bible for ourselves. Join us as we look at why the Bereans were praised for verifying teaching with Scripture and why developing a personal, daily habit of reading God’s Word is essential for a faith that stands firm.
In this video:
The staggering irony of the chief priests and the prophecy of the potter’s field.
The danger of spiritual dependency on others' teachings.
Why we need to move beyond "secondhand faith."
A challenge to prioritize personal time in God’s Word.
Daily Challenge:
Spend at least 15 uninterrupted minutes reading Scripture today before turning to any external resources. Ask God to show you something directly from His Word.
If this message challenged you, please like, subscribe, and share it with someone who needs to be encouraged to open the Book for themselves today.

Right, they they knew the word, but they didn't recognize the word uh what was flesh standing right in front of them. Welcome back to the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional, where every day we encourage men to pursue a more meaningful relationship with Jesus Christ. Okay, we're gonna dive back into the book of Matthew. Before we do, I want to talk to you about the Warrior Path. All right, the Warrior Path is a six-week program that we have formulated here at Restoring Warriors. This program is designed to intentionally lay down more thoughtful, more prayerful, foundational habits in a man's day-to-day life that allows him to more intentionally seek a relationship with the Lord. All right, we look at things like faith, family, fitness, and fellowship. All right, so we'd love to have you join us on our next installment of the Warrior Path. It's on July 27th, is when we're kicking it off. You can go to restoring warriors.com. All right, click on the warrior path up at the top. You can register right there, find out more information. If you have any other questions, free to reach out to me. All right, let's dive back in. Matthew 27, verses 9 and 10 today, where it says this that what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled. They took the 30 pieces of silver, the price set on him by the people of Israel, and they used them to buy the potter's field as the Lord commanded me. All right, the irony of this entire chapter is pretty staggering. All right, chapter 27. The chief priests they knew the scriptures, right? They knew it really well. They had studied the prophets their entire lives. All right, so they know these things. They could quote passages from memory and teach others what the word of God said. Yet while they were handling the 30 pieces of silver and arranging the purchase of the potter's field, they failed to recognize that they were fulfilling the very prophecy that they claimed to have believed. They knew the word, but they didn't recognize the word uh what was flesh standing right in front of them. All right, and before we're too hard on the religious leaders, before we're too hard on them, we should ask ourselves a difficult question. How different are we? Are we different at all? Right? Because many men today have have access to more biblical teaching than any generation in history. We have podcasts, we have sermons, we have YouTube channels, we have devotionals. You're listening to one right now, conferences, we have Christian books, yet, yet many never open the Bible. Like they're actual Bibles themselves. And instead they rely entirely on what somebody else says about the word of God. It says what the word of God is. We rely on those forms of entertainment instead of actually diving into the word and hearing God ourselves. All right, and the pastor's teaching, it's really valuable, all right, but it was never meant to replace your personal time that you are in scripture. All right, the men of Berea were praised because they examined the scriptures daily to verify what they were being taught. They heard something and then they went to scripture to confirm it. All right, they didn't simply accept a preacher's word as truth, and neither should we. They searched God's word for themselves. All right, a man who only consumes someone else's understanding of scripture is always going to remain spiritually dependent. But a man who opens God's word daily begins to recognize God's voice, all right, discern truth from error, and help develop a faith that stands, that stands firm when challenges come, because they will come. The chief priest, they knew about God, but they completely missed what God was doing right in front of them. So let's not make the same mistake, fellas. All right. Don't settle for secondhand faith. Open the book. All right, open the book, read it, study it, get intimate with it. Let God speak to you directly through his word. All right, here's a challenge for you today. Spend at least 15, 15 uninterrupted minutes reading scripture today, before listening to a sermon, a podcast, or a devotional. All right, and before you before you open it up, have a moment of prayer with the Lord and ask him, ask God to show you something. Ask him to reveal something inside of you directly from the word of God that you're going to be reading. All right, let's pray. Heavenly Father, Lord, give me a hunger for your word. Lord, help me move beyond secondhand faith and to seek you personally through Scripture, through your written word, Lord. Lord, open my eyes to your truth and help me recognize that your voice stands above all others, Lord. It's in the name of Jesus we pray. Amen. Hey, thank you for tuning in today. If you were encouraged by this devotional, I encourage you to send it off to a friend. All right, make sure you like, make sure you like the video. Leave a comment, right? Leave a comment with the scripture that you're going to be reading for your 15 minutes today. And make sure you're subscribed because we drop these videos first thing in the morning, Monday through Friday. And it's a great way to start your day off with a little bit of encouragement. It's an absolute pleasure doing devotionals with you every day. Can't wait to see you on the next one.
