What happens when human strength encounters heavenly power? In today’s devotional, we look at the Roman guards at Jesus’ tomb—trained soldiers who were overwhelmed in an instant by the presence of God.
We often pride ourselves on our own discipline, resources, and emotional resilience, but these are no substitute for the true power of God. Join us as we reflect on what it means to stop relying on our own strength and find true confidence in the One who commands angels and conquers death.
In this video:
A look at the contrast between Roman military might and divine authority.
The difference between earthly confidence and faith.

And in their lives, they had likely seen battle, they've likely seen bloodshed, uh, they've likely seen a lot of death. Hey, welcome back to the Restoring Warriors Daily Devotional, where every day we boldly challenge men to pursue the calling that God's placed on their lives. And hey, we've been going for the last 18 months or so through the book of Matthew, line by line, and right now we're in Matthew 28. We've made the final chapter. So do me a favor, comment below what book of the Bible we should start next. Alright, we're in Matthew 28, we're in verse 4, where it says this. The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men. Alright, so the Roman guards that were stationed at Jesus' tomb, they weren't ordinary men. They were trained soldiers. Alright, they had been through training, they were elite. They were the elite of the world's most powerful military, right? The Roman Empire, man. Alright, their job was to stand firm under pressure. And in their lives, they had likely seen battle, they'd likely seen bloodshed, uh, they'd likely seen a lot of death without flinching. Yet, yet a single sight of an angel of the Lord, these hardened warriors became overwhelmed with terror, overcome with terror. Matthew said it shook them and they became like dead men. Alright, so this moment here reminds us of a really important truth that there's a vast difference between earthly strength and heavenly power. All right, the soldiers, they represented Rome's authority, the discipline and might, but none of that mattered in the presence of God's power. All right, and many of us we spend our days trying to be stronger, all right, physically, mentally, financially, emotionally. Those things do have value. I'm not saying don't go after them, but they should never become our confidence. We should never build our foundation on those things. Real strength is found in humble submission to the one who commands angels, who defeats death, and who holds all authority, not only on earth, but also in heaven. All right, the resurrection wasn't just proof that Jesus conquered the grave. It was a declaration that no government, army, obstacle, or force on earth can stand against God's purposes. All right, so I want to hit you with the challenge today. And here it is, identify one area where you've been relying on yourself instead of relying on God. All right, and surrender that area of your life to God in prayer today, asking Him to accomplish what your physical strength, your personal strength never could. Alright, let's pray. Heavenly Father, Father, thank you for reminding me that your power is so much greater than anything that the world can offer, Lord. Forgive me for trusting in my own strength instead of yours, Lord, and help me walk in humility, confidence, and faith, knowing that you are able to do what I never could, Lord. It's in Jesus' name we pray. Amen. Hey, thank you for tuning in today. If you were encouraged by this devotional, I encourage you to send it to a friend. Make sure you like, make sure you subscribe, leave a comment with whatever book of the Bible you think we should do next. And as always, I can't wait to see you on the next one.
