Shear Inspiration: Meet Hound Therapy's Instructor Alexis
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A bather thrown onto the grooming table. A self-taught stylist searching for structure. An instructor who now teaches the patterns, patience, and empathy that build calm dogs and loyal clients. Alexis joins us to trace the real path from raw talent to reliable results, opening up about the habits that changed everything: repeatable technique, clear boundaries, and a commitment to “humanity over vanity.”
We unpack how a consistent workflow turns chaos into clarity—why a simple set of rules works across breeds, how hand scissoring improves with pattern-based practice, and what it takes to keep quality high when the day runs long. Alexis explains why she loves standard poodles, how she handles creative requests like mohawks responsibly, and why saying no can be an act of care when a style doesn’t match a coat type, maintenance schedule, or temperament.
The conversation goes deeper into mindset. Perfection is a myth on live animals, and chasing it can rattle confidence. Alexis shares how she sheds self-criticism, read stress signals, and built trust with nervous dogs through slower sessions and consistent handling. For aspiring groomers, we offer practical guidance on choosing a grooming school or salon: observe safety standards, ask about hands-on hours, and find mentors who pair skill with empathy. If you’re a pet owner, you’ll learn how realistic goals, home care, and steady rebooking lead to healthier coats and happier visits.

Welcome And Show Setup
SPEAKER_02Welcome to Tale Talk Grooming Chronicles with Health Therapy, the podcast where we talk all things pet grooming, daycare, academy, and more. We're here to share expert tips, hilarious pet stories, and the inside scoop on keeping your furry friends happy and healthy. Our motto, humanity over vanity. And don't worry, we don't fight. Let's get started.
SPEAKER_00Today, we take a powerful look into the experiences, lessons, and defining moments that shaped one of Hound Therapy's dedicated instructors, revealing the heart behind her passion for grooming and teaching. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yuvet, co-host and producer here in the studio with Tanya and Alexis. Alexis is one of the incredible instructors at Hound Therapy. Alexis, how are you feeling as we jump into your inspiring story today?
SPEAKER_01I'm doing good today. I'm good. Ready.
SPEAKER_00Good. Now, Alexis, we're continuing our sheer inspiration series, and this episode is all about your journey. Let's start from the beginning. What can you share about how your path in grooming first began? And then, Tanya, I will pass things to you.
From Bather To Self-Taught Groomer
Joining The Academy And Leveling Up
Favorite Breeds And Core Skills
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, I started out as a bather in a completely different shop. I hadn't gone to school, I hadn't done anything, but I did see an ad on Facebook saying somebody needed a bather. And I went in and I asked if they could eventually teach me how to groom. So that's how that started. I was a bather for a year. Then we lost a groomer. So I got thrown into grooming with little to no training. So I ended up being self-taught for a while. And then shortly after that, she came to us to our grooming academy to teach her how to groom properly. Although when she came in, she is our first and only so far student to test out of our bathing course and go straight into the grooming course. Um, she had amazing skills that we decided that we couldn't live without her because we loved her so much and she fit right in. Um, so we hired her and now she's one of our full-time groomers and instructors. Well, I'd I'd always connected with animals more than people. So I always knew I wanted to work with them. I folks a box. Yes. And then, of course, as everyone sees on the internet, beautiful dogs. And I knew I wanted to be able to make them look look beautiful too. I loved it. What is your favorite dog to groom? A standard poodle, best, best dog ever. What are some of the specific takeaways that you've learned from taking the grooming academy here? I'd say the best, the most important one is learning consistency. One thing about grooming that I did before I came here was I just kind of went for it and have a clear pattern to follow. I just did it. And I got okay results, but really learning just the same motion, the repetitive motion, so many dog breeds, so many grooms are all done the same way. You wouldn't think so, but they are. So just learning a simple set of rules to follow. And doing the same thing each time. Yes. Gives you a consistent, clear baseline. And that's kind of all that we do. Like all of us kind of groom similarly. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So Tanya, I was just gonna ask you, what is one characteristic that Alexis has that really makes her stand out in your shop? Her personality for sure.
SPEAKER_01And skill-wise, her hand scissoring skills, she's she can hand scissor a dog to perfect to perfection. Like it's great.
SPEAKER_00And how has your grooming philosophy, Alexis, evolved as you've grown in the industry?
SPEAKER_01My grooming philosophy. I think you know what? Being more willing to set realistic expectations for my clients. When I first started, like I said, I was just thrown into grooming. So I was I was eager to please my clients, right? I was new, I wanted them to like me, I wanted them to stick with me. So I did anything for them, regardless of how ridiculous the request was. Coming here, I got I got more used to telling them just yeah, telling them no. That hey, this is not realistic for you, for your dog. It's just doing things that are right for them. Yeah. Not being so eager to just do whatever.
SPEAKER_00Alexis, do you have a a favorite type of client?
Setting Realistic Client Expectations
SPEAKER_01I love clients who want to do fun, creative things. I love the dogs that get the mohawks. I love when they say they say, let's just try something. Let's just try it. If we don't like it, it'll grow back. I love that.
SPEAKER_00What is the biggest challenge you overcame that now helps to guide and encourage new groomers? What do you think?
Creative Clients And Trying New Looks
SPEAKER_01The biggest challenge. I'd say it's either self-confidence because I was very unsure of myself and what to do when she shouldn't have been, but she was. Yeah. Self-confidence is a big thing, but also being overly I don't know how to describe it, being overly critical of yourself and what you do. These are live animals. They will not look perfect, they will not look how you see on social media. That's okay. Yes. Being able to do it efficiently and quickly so we can get we can keep everyone happy. Yep. That's a big thing.
SPEAKER_00Alexis, what is your favorite part about being a groomer?
Overcoming Self-Criticism And Perfectionism
SPEAKER_01I love the relationship you build with the animals. I adore them. I love seeing them come out of their shells. I love seeing as they come in more and more, they're more relaxed with you. Yep. They trust you more. It's just incredible. And Alexis does really well with the more nervous side of dogs that really appreciate those one-on-one kind of grooming aspects. Um you do create quite the relationship with the dogs. So it's like, I said, stop. We're not doing this today. And then they're just like, okay, let's let's just get this groom on, Alexis. Like if you're thinking of coming to a grooming school, check all um, do your research before you decide on a specific um academy or institute before you um actually enroll and go there. And education is key. Definitely know your shops. Yes, know your shops, even it even without schooling. They're yep, going in, making sure you like the environment you're in. Because we have a previous podcast of how to pick a grooming salon as well.
Building Trust With Nervous Dogs
