Designer Cuts & Canine Self‑Care: How Human Trends Are Shaping Dog Grooming

Luxury Dog Grooming Trends. Are We Treating Our Dogs Like Humans?
Luxury grooming for dogs is booming, but how do you balance cute trends with real canine care? We dive into the pampering craze—from blueberry facials and pawdicures to high-heat blowouts and creative cuts—and separate the feel-good add-ons from the habits that actually protect skin and coat health. With Shannon and Tanya from Hound Therapy at the table, we talk through product safety, realistic maintenance, and the hidden costs (and benefits) behind spa-level services.
We look at why human shampoo doesn’t belong on dogs, how pH and coat structure guide product choices, and where over-styling can backfire. You’ll hear candid stories from the grooming floor: clients requesting Ugg-style fur boots, the hours behind a glossy blowout, and the difference between show-ring prep and everyday pet care. We also address the social media effect—why those flawless Instagram coats often rely on heavy products and lighting—and offer a checklist to help you ask the right questions about heat, dilution, and stress cues during grooming.
Finally, we call out what’s here to stay and what will fade. Targeted facial care for tear staining and wrinkle folds earns its place because it solves real problems. Flashy dyes and novelty “dog mullets” will keep cycling as trends do, but a healthy coat and humane handling never go out of style. If you want to love your dog like family while caring for them like a dog, this conversation gives you the tools to choose services you can maintain and your pup can enjoy.

Welcome And Show Motto
SPEAKER_03Welcome to Tale Talk Grooming Chronicles with House Therapy, the podcast where we talk all things pet grooming, daycare, academy, and more. Hosted by Shannon and Tanya of House Therapy, serving pet owners across North Texas. We're here to share expert tips, hilarious pet stories, and the inside scoop on keeping your furry friends happy and healthy. Our motto, humanity over vanity. And don't worry, we don't fight. Let's get started.
The Rise Of Luxury Grooming
SPEAKER_00From blueberry fracials to spa level pampering, today we are exploring the rise of luxury dog grooming and what it says about how we care for our pets. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer back in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Hound Therapy. Hi, ladies, it is so great to be back with you today.
Are We Humanizing Our Dogs
SPEAKER_00Now let's jump into today's topic: luxury dog grooming trends. Are we treating our dogs like humans? I'll let you ladies kick this one off.
SPEAKER_02Thanks. So we have um we have, as humans, our dogs are like our children now. They are part of our family and we we we love them like our children. Uh and they're treated like that. We we have a new trend going on here in the US, which has been all over Europe, and that is dogs go everywhere with us. They go to the movies, they go to the park, they go to the restaurants. Um, they're really um not just kept at home anymore or in the backyard uh or you know, put away. They're part of the family and they're part of our festivities. So are we humanizing our dogs? I do. I humanize my dog all of the time. Uh if, you know, I I I laugh and I'm like, if I could have given birth to her, I would have. I love her so much. She is, she is an amazing animal. And I just I can't say enough good things about my dog. Uh, and I think that most people are the same. But pet humanization is a completely different subject. We do still have to
Luxury Services And Hidden Tradeoffs
SPEAKER_02understand that they are still dogs. Uh, and is it hurt? Is it hurting? No. Uh, it it will drive up the cost, some. I mean, we've got a lot of, as you mentioned, you know, we've got the blueberry facials, uh, we've got dog birthday parties that we do now. We have luxury blowouts for our dogs. Um, there's a lot of things that we can do, pop pad things. Um, we have aromatherapies, the poticures, customized spall packages. All of these things um are good. And they're not bad for their dog. Um, luxury isn't necessarily the problem. Misunderstanding, misunderstanding your dog's needs is more of a problem. So, what we need to know is that the pH is level is different from their skin to our skin. So, we do need to buy them a special shampoo. We can't use what we've got in our bathroom.
SPEAKER_01Um sensory sensibilities, um, like smells, noises, overspent for sure.
SPEAKER_02Um we need just because it's cute, doesn't mean that it's necessary. Um, we have a dog that's in here today. Um, and we do these actually, we have several.
SPEAKER_01We have some that are one a couple weeks ago, too.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's like six inches long. Uh, and you know, we brush this, it's a luxury blowout. And it he looks amazing when he's done, but he takes hours to do. Uh, it's is it healthy? We use a lot of extra conditioner and coat conditionings for the skin and for the hair. Uh, and it's just it's a lot of extra product on this dog's hair. But just like if you were to blow dry your hair all of the time, you know, you have to be very cautious and concerned about the amount of products that you're putting on and how often you're using heat.
Social Media Versus Realistic Care
SPEAKER_02Um, so that's, you know, just grooming on a regular basis is healthy, but grooming because you want a certain look, you know, every week is not necessarily healthy. Um, we have somebody in here who wants Ug boots, fur boots. What did you call it? It's a song.
SPEAKER_01Boots with a fur. They'll know what it means.
SPEAKER_02Boots with a fur is a song. And she, it's it's basically they want this dog shaved everywhere except from you know, mid-elbow down. And it it's just it's an odd look.
SPEAKER_01On some dogs, it looks good. On others, like the dog today, it did not look so hot. The owner loves it, which is we will do it.
SPEAKER_02The owner's 15. So uh, you know, they could dog coloring. We use safe colors, but those colors last a very long time. You can't continue to do that. Um, the thing that we fight with a lot is it's it it's socials, it's social media, it's unrealistic.
SPEAKER_01Um the dogs on Instagram you see have five pounds of hairspray and everything else in them. Overpriced, not realistic.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. It's I mean, we can talk about what a show dog goes through versus what a pet goes through. Yeah, very different cares. Um, those dogs that you see on on TV that are winning shows, they get flat ironed, they've got special straightening products, they've got silky coat hair, curly coat conditioners, they've got imagine, I mean, there's so many pet products. It's it's crazy. They almost have about the same amount that they do for humans for dogs.
Pricing, Skill, And Pet Wellbeing
SPEAKER_02So, an important distinction is luxury pricing. Um, it's perfect, but you're paying for skill, safety, coat healthy uh products. You're you're you're paying for the time that it takes to do it. And you know, you're not just paying for just extras. And you need to kind of kind of be aware of, hey, our your dog is still a dog. You know, our children are still children, but they're learning. Our dogs are learning. Um, and and you need to kind of be learning with them too. It's it really is something that's pretty new here in the US. Um, and and the Europeans have been doing it forever and ever and ever. I mean, dogs have just always gone, they're allowed everywhere. You know, they have more time off, they have more free time. We're always about work here. And now that we can work with our dogs and our dogs can work with us, uh, we've kind of jumped into this head, you know, feet first and it lost our head in the game about, hey, what's really good for our dog? What can we actually do and maintain? Um, those are all things that I think are good points uh for people to be aware of when you look at your dog and you you think this is my child because I do it all the time. And and she has expressions and she has looks, and you know, I'm like, oh gosh, you know, she can't have that. She only drinks bottled water. You know, all of those things are good. I cook for my dog, you know, uh and and I will still do that. And you know, I would take a day off of work if she had to go to, you know, have surgery. I had a I I a whole part of our shop is built for just my dog. Um, she shares it with other dogs, but not always.
SPEAKER_01She doesn't like it.
SPEAKER_02So I think I was harder on my kids than I am on my dog because I mean I move my couch. If my dog has, if she's dropped a bone and it fell under the couch, we will get up from whatever we're doing and and move the furniture around for her. So I am 100% uh humanizing my dog and I do it every day, but I can't give her about she smells like a dog three weeks in, but I can't bathe her every week because you know, she would. It's not good for her. I want to, but I don't do it. I do her nails uh on a regular basis, you know, I do I clean her ears on a regular basis, I brush her teeth on a regular basis. There's a lot of things that you can do uh that will make you feel like uh, you know, oh, my dog is, you know, part of our family, and you know, we all have to brush our teeth at night. And and that's great to set those kinds of routines.
SPEAKER_01But just you shouldn't be brushing your dog's teeth every night, though.
SPEAKER_02Make sure they're healthy ones. You do. And my dog has never, she has no tartar. I'm just saying she's almost six. She's perfectly poorly white.
Healthy Habits Owners Can Maintain
SPEAKER_00What's one luxury trend that you think is here to stay, and one that will fade out?
SPEAKER_01I think that so done correctly, a blueberry facial. For those dogs that get the nasty tear stains, it helps lift that up. Or the double folded faces.
SPEAKER_02I do think I think the facial is here to stay. I think a dog facial and it's needed. Uh special products for face. I think that's needed. Tier list, all that good stuff.
Trends That Stay Versus Fade
SPEAKER_02Uh, a big trend right now is coloring and um some really funky cuts. And I think that those are gonna uh fade out. I do think they'll fade out to something just as ridiculous, but um, you know, that's part of the fun and being the artistic uh pleasure.
SPEAKER_01You know, being able to see colors going anywhere, but I think all the like turtle cuts, things like that. And if you don't know what a turtle cut is, look it up. It's hilarious. Um it's a dog mullet.
SPEAKER_02I think that those are things that will will be forever changing. I mean, I think we'll always find a way to do fun, funky things with our animals. Um, you know, I we had the 80s with the lines in our eyebrows. I mean, we ever every decade has some. So while they're doing it again, they stop for a long time. So I think that we'll have some of those same kind of funky, weird haircuts for dogs, but I do think that those will kind of fade and come back as as uh our our generations, you know, move forward with with their animals. We'll see.
SPEAKER_01But to me, a healthy coat will always healthy coat should be a primary. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02More than a trendy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I
Closing And How To Book
