Skunked Dog Emergency: What Not To Do And How To Fix It
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
Your dog comes back from the yard smelling like pure disaster, and your brain screams “BATH, NOW.” Pause. That first reaction can be the exact thing that makes skunk odor last longer, spread farther, and soak into your home.
We break down what skunk spray really is: an oily chemical that bonds to fur, fabric, and everything your dog rubs against. We explain the critical first steps pet owners should take right away, why “do not get it wet” is the golden rule, and why tomato sauce and other old-school tricks usually fail. You’ll also hear what professional groomers see most often, including the hard truth about expectations: de-skunking can dramatically reduce the smell, but coat type matters, and some dogs may keep a faint tinge that shows up again on rainy days.
From there, we get practical about prevention and planning. We talk skunk deterrence, removing backyard attractants like open trash and brush piles, and why dusk-to-dawn is the danger window. We also share simple training priorities like recall and “leave it,” plus when a skunked dog is actually a vet concern versus a grooming problem. Finally, we cover aftercare that helps the skin and coat recover, including conditioning and timing a follow-up bath once the oils are mostly gone.
If this helped you, subscribe for more pet grooming tips, share this with a friend who has a curious dog, and leave a review so more pet parents can find us. What’s the first thing you’ve tried after a skunk run-in, and did it work?

We're here to share expert tips, hilarious pet stories, and the inside scoop on keeping your furry friends happy and healthy. Our motto, humanity over vanity. And don't worry, we don't fight. Let's get started.
What Not To Do First
SPEAKER_02A skunked dog can send any pet parent into panic mode, but the wrong reaction can make things worse. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer, back in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Hound Therapy. Hi, ladies. Now it is so great to be back on with both of you today. And today's question is gonna be what should parents avoid doing when their dog gets skunked? And what's the right way to fix it?
Realistic Results And Coat Length
Skunk Deterrence And Leash Skills
SPEAKER_01Uh I mean, no skunk emergency is a good emergency. Um the best thing you can do is do not get it wet. And don't let the dog in your house. Um, it it's not really a water-based smell. It's it's a chemical oil that smells so bad and it bonds to everything fur, hair, fabrics, walls, you name it. And water activates it. And water makes it stick. So do not put water on your dog. Um and tomato paste, tomato sauce, all the tomato things, old wives' tail. Don't do those either. It'll make it go away for only a couple hours and it'll come right back. I promise. Tried it. Um, I will put a formula of sorts on our social medias. So if you do run into this, you can always check our social medias and it'll be there. Um, one of the best home remedies, I think. I mean, we've bought skunk shampoos, we've done you know nobody, it's it's a horrible smell. It is horrible. This this does work and it's worked for decades. Yep. Um, and all of it is just do this first before you get it wet. Um, so being in the country, I live in the country, I have all of this on hand at all times. Um, because you never know. And most times it's just the dog getting nosy and getting too close. Well, I mean, yeah, skunkers are I mean, I my mother has been skunked twice. Um and it's not it's not lovely. I prefer um a nice shave after the bath because you just can't kill it all the way. I don't think you can I mean it depends on if you have a long haired dog or a short haired dog, definitely. Correct. Yeah. I mean, if you've got a doodle that got skunked, I mean we you can tone it down, and that's really I I let's have a realistic hope that that is what you don't call us with your skunked dog expecting you're gonna get back somebody smelling like Pepe Lepuke uh is his his bipolar friend. It's not gonna happen. It still may have a tinge, but definitely not full force. No, so it's but and every time you get it wet, you still might have a little bit. So if it's a rainy, micy day, I think that you'd still have some of that skunk stuff. Yeah. Um I just deter skunks from coming to my house because I don't like it. And I don't like them in the shop because they make everybody smell. It's your lungs. Oh, it's just awful. Uh that said, um, you know, did skunk deterrence are real things. I think I mean the main thing is avoid the attractants um that's in garbage laying out brush piles. Um they're more active at dusk to dawn, so keep your dogs on a leash. And teaching your dog if you're if you're in an area, um recall. Yeah, recall is good, leave it is good. Um, but skunks are skunks, and you know, when they're there and your dog gets skunked, uh, a shorter coat will help, right, to cut most of it off. Um uh the home remedy solutions, um, a lot of them are really, really good. Um that you know, it it as long as it doesn't have water in it. So anything that's that says shampoo or again, the vinegar and the waters and uh all of the tomato-based products, um it really does it it just masks it for a little while. It doesn't really it's just a stronger smell than this because it doesn't tomatoes don't neutralize the smell by any means. Um the big thing is if your dog gets sprayed in the face, um that's the one part of the dog that you can't really do a whole lot. Um I would suggest if it does get in their eyes and there's scaling redness. There's no need to go to the vet for a skunk dog unless your dog is having uh a reaction. So it depends on, you know, if it went directly up his nose and to his eyes. Um chances of it getting his ears are pretty, you know, slim, but you'll be able to tell which area. It's almost always the face, it's almost always the head, uh, just because that's they're nosing around right underneath the skunk's butt. Or they walk right up on it and stare the sky okay. Yeah. It's disaster. So, but it's not, it's not a medical problem. Not 90% of the time, yeah. I mean, unless they have an reaction. Right. Um, I would focus on uh you know, quick reactions. Uh if don't freak out. Enjoy the smell for a while if it's in the afternoon. Uh because, you know, grooming salons are not just gonna rush you in. Call, check around to make sure that somebody can, you know, help you out and uh see if you can go ahead and make your appointment as early as possible. Sometimes you can get in right away too. It really just depends on your salon here. Um I don't it depends on the dog for us and what our day looks like. Uh we we some salons won't do them at all. Yeah. I don't does pet I don't know if the large big box stores like the big pet. I don't know. I don't know if they do those or not. Um but either way, it's yeah, you don't want to get skunked.
Why The Dry Mix Works
SPEAKER_02Now, question for you ladies. You talked about a proper skunk odor neutralizing mixture. What makes that more effective than store-bought shampoos?
SPEAKER_01Because it doesn't have water in it. I'll let let's start with that. Um, it's got a lot of things that are they're they're not necessarily great for your dog's coat, but they are gonna isolate, but they're gonna isolate the oils of the skunk. So a skunk has skunk glands, and those glands that, you know, they use they use that for protection to keep things away. And um, anybody who's driven past a skunk or, you know, if you've if your animals been there, yeah. I and again, I personally don't have, I don't live in the country, so I haven't really ever had a dog that's been skunked personally, so I haven't had to live with the trauma of having that smell in my house. Terrible. I have. Um that said, we do have them come into the shop and we have tried everything. I mean, absolutely everything. Uh, and this really is the only thing that works. And it's just, it's, it's a lack of water. It's just a combination of ingredients that that you mix together um at a pretty precise. And sometimes you need a lot, sometimes you need a little. It just depends on if you're treating just an area, a big fluffy dog, or if it's a short-haired dog. I mean, there's a lot of things. Yeah. Um, I mean, but the point of it is to put it on a dry coat first, let it sit before you ever touch that dog with water. Um, because the water is going to make it stick any longer. Yeah.
Aftercare To Restore The Coat
SPEAKER_02Understood. Understood. Now, once the smell is mostly gone, what follow-up care helps keep the coat and skin healthy afterwards?
SPEAKER_01So I I would say conditioned. Condition and we're we're gonna be putting uh a mixture of chemicals on your dog's coat that has to sit there for a while, and it might have to happen two or three times. Uh, that said, and or we, you know, maybe we're able to go short with your dog and you're like, you know, I don't really care what my dog looks like because uh I just want the smell gone. It stinks. Yeah, it stinks, it just smells really bad. So uh aftercare is really pretty simple. It's you know, you you might want to retreat a follow-up skunk, de-skunk type of a version um with some good smelling shampoos or something after that that are good in about a week, because that most of those oils will be off. If um you're able, obviously, the less you know, that hair, if you've got a dog with that's got a lot of hair, that oil is going to be mostly on the top part of that coat. It's gonna be hard for it to penetrate down any lower. So at least that lightens your smell some. So if if you're able to, you know, say, let's just take it off. If it's if it's a type of dog that, you know, we can cut shorter and cut through. Um, if your dog was already short, I unfortunately it's it's you know, it is what it is. So uh just follow-up care. But then I would, I would, I would do a good conditioner bath after. A, it smells really good. Uh, and and two, it will help to kind of put that moisture back into the coat.
SPEAKER_02Understood. Well, thank you both for sharing these life-saving tips today. Great information as always, and we will see everyone next time.
SPEAKER_01Thanks so much.
