Watching dog grooming online can make it look like a quick bath, a cute haircut, and you’re done. Then you step into a real grooming academy and realize the “simple” parts have the most moving pieces. We sit down with Christi, a new student at Hound Therapy, to talk through what the first six weeks of grooming school actually feel like, from that first-day flood of information to the moment your routine finally starts to click. If you’ve ever thought about becoming a dog groomer, switching careers, or touring a hands-on grooming school in North Texas, this honest student perspective is for you.

We get specific about the early training that shapes everything: prepping before the tub, choosing shampoos with purpose, learning safe handling holds, and building muscle memory through repetition. Christi shares what surprised her most, including why bathing can be harder than it sounds and how timing adds pressure once you start practicing at a faster pace. We also break down coat types, especially double-coated breeds, and why deshedding takes knowledge, patience, and time if you want a truly clean dog and a great finish.

Then we tackle the shortcut myths. YouTube grooming videos can be helpful, but they can also oversell expensive products and underplay the fundamentals that keep pets safe. A story about a doodle with a botched DIY groom drives home why real training matters. If you care about professional pet grooming, humane handling, and results built on skill rather than hype, you’ll leave with a clearer view of what it takes. Subscribe, share this with someone curious about grooming school, and leave us a review with your biggest question about learning to groom.

SPEAKER_03

A brand new student steps into grooming school. What does the first six weeks really look like? Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, the co-host and producer in the studio today with Christy and Shannon. Christy is a student at Hound Therapy. Christy, how are you feeling?

SPEAKER_02

I'm feeling a lot more confident than I did on the first day. Very much.

SPEAKER_03

Yes. And as I was telling you, you know, you are in great hands. Now, thank you for being here with us today, Christy. Today we are engaging in a student edition of the podcast. Being that you've just begun your journey at Hound Therapy, tell us what the first six weeks of grooming school is really like.

SPEAKER_02

You know, it is a lot of work, I will say. Um, it can be overwhelming at times, but the more you get into a good routine, the better off you will be and the more comfortable you will be going forward. And you can feel like you can knock everything out and achieve your goals for the day.

SPEAKER_01

I love hearing her say that too. And hi, everybody. Um, so this is gonna be a fun journey, Hellfell E for everybody to listen to. So anybody who's thinking about, you know, hey, this is just the easiest job in the world, please listen to Christy's story. It is a lot of hard work. Uh, I have a question for you. So, like, based on when, you know, where you started from where you are now, what do you wish that what what's different? What's what is the most unexpected thing that you thought would be really easy that's difficult?

SPEAKER_02

You I mean, honestly, I would think that the bathing course uh would be the easiest part to get through. But there are a little all the little small logistics behind the bathing, like the the prepping before they, you know, go into the bathtub and get bathed. I mean, there's a lot of things that you have to consider and uh, you know, before you can even get the process even going. There's a lot of stuff.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and and you know, we say that a lot for for everybody, you know, we tell all of the students here, and um, now you're four, four and a half weeks in and you're starting to see new c new students coming in because you know, we do an alternating enrollment. Does that make you feel a little bit better or worse to see how, you know, and it sounds awful, but to see how other people struggle?

SPEAKER_02

It actually makes that's funny. It's actually it it makes me look back to the first day when it was my first day. And I look back going, wow, that was me. That's exactly how I looked going in here on my first day. I felt overwhelmed. Like, what in the world did I get myself into? Can I handle this? And uh yeah, it's it's funny how when you see somebody else that's starting out and on their first day, how you see everything.

Consistency Builds Confidence Fast

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's I mean, for me to see you from there to now, and I love this part. I I love watching just the the the sheer, it's almost terror in their eyes, and they're looking at, you know, you Chrissy would look at me when she first started, and she just was like, Oh gosh, you know, that's a lot of information in five minutes that just came out of your mouth. And um, and it really is just this is our shampoo, you know, these are where our brushes are, and this is where we work. And you've got to know, you know, really quick, hands-on, uh, how to be safe, how to keep the dog safe, and um, you know, what shampoo to use on the dog and where to use it, where to find it. So it's it's a lot of information from that first week to, and I say this a lot, it just snaps. When did it just snap for you? That was like, okay, I've got this. Uh, you know, I think I can do this because that first week looking at you, everybody I believe has doubts. So when was it with you? Uh or was that, I guess, was that your experience for that first week?

SPEAKER_02

It was. Um, I think the more the more you you being consistent about being here and helps uh I mean, I greatly. It will help greatly. Being here is very important um on the days that you are here and scheduled. Um, because it's all about memory. You you get into the routine, you get, you know, then you get other little small things added on top of what you were currently doing. So it's it can be a little tricky, but as long as you stay consistent, that's gonna be your and it just you're like, okay, I've got this.

SPEAKER_01

It's you know, the holds, and that just kind of comes to you. I I I'm I'm making it up, correct? No, no. Everybody looks at me like, I don't think so.

SPEAKER_02

But it it does, it does get a little it it feels if it doesn't feel um natural natural, then that's where people like, uh, you know, I just don't get it. I don't understand, you know, it just doesn't feel right, you know. But the more you do it, the better off it becomes. Okay. This feels better.

Timed Dogs And Double Coats

SPEAKER_01

I got this, and like we can go. So now looking back from there to now, how much more confident are you with? And we're just this is we are just beginning Chrissy's journey for everyone listening. So I mean, here, you know, in Plano in real life in-person grooming versus online, this is this is all hands-on. Um, so being hands-on, thrown in basically, you know, to the dogs, not the wolves, uh. Um, it's it is um, you know, that lost, oh my gosh, to uh like kind of explain to you where what are you what today, how did it go for you today? And I know today was a lot more bringing on at four and a half weeks in. So just within uh basically a month, um explain how you're feeling today versus, you know, I know you're a little overwhelmed based on what we, you know, this the bathing, the grimming at a faster pace, because we're practicing everything you've learned in the last, you know, four weeks and putting them in play. So how how did that work out for you today?

SPEAKER_02

It actually it it was it was a little stressful just because everything I'm being timed today. So it was uh the pressure was definitely on. And um, even though it felt like I was overwhelmed, I could still I I I still did my routine, but just on a quicker pace and just, you know, maybe there were uh some areas that I didn't quite, and we had some pretty difficult reads today. We had a lot of the kids double coated, might I add, which is the hardest to actually really get into their fur and get everything cleaned and thoroughly washed. And so that was a bit of a challenge today. But I have a great teacher here, and she she provided me with the proper um method of bathing on, you know, what you can easily over like miss something, it's easily missed on it's repetitive.

Online Tips Versus Real Training

SPEAKER_01

It is repetitive, and and you would think it would be easy to just wash and dry a dog, but based on the coat types, and and that's kind of the first place that we start is with the double-coated breeds because they're quite literally they're the easiest yet the hardest dogs to do. They're the easiest dogs and they don't really require a lot of scissoring or clipper work, but they do require a lot of knowledge on how to hold, how to keep yourself from getting hurt and stand properly, and then how to get to their skin and how to give the best um outcome for their client. So it is it's it is a time-consuming job uh to do these double-coated reads, and so many places don't do them properly. So it is one of the the things that we really kind of uh empower our students with is learning how to do this from the ground up, how to do it properly, how to start getting, you know, quicker at what you're doing. The first, you know, few weeks, it's um and it's just doing the steps. And then it's doing the steps quickly, and then it's doing the steps, and let's see where you are based on your time. Uh you you can't, we had somebody who called the other day and wanted to know if we can, you know, do a test out for somebody that uh did some online uh academy training for, you know, for grooming. And then we also, oddly enough, today had somebody who had their pet sitter groom their dog that um, you know, she she had something she picked up and thought she took a class on. And what did you think about that dog, Christy?

SPEAKER_02

It was pretty I was I was like, wow, this well what kind of dog was it?

SPEAKER_01

It was it was a doodle.

SPEAKER_02

And it did I had um it just I was like, uh did somebody uh mess this dog's face up or it was very I can't even describe the word. Yeah, it just it looked like somebody that had no experience got a hold of the dog and really kind of butchered it up.

SPEAKER_01

So and prior to to to coming here, I know that um, you know, we do Saturdays, so we've talked before students come in to make sure it's the right fit. But um, and we're gonna get on this really quickly because I know we run out of time. But uh you had mentioned, hey, look, on the YouTube videos, you know, they do this, and you know, before you start here or come here, um, the reality is versus what you see, how is that different for people who are thinking, oh, I I've just watched a video.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's it's you know, that I I understand that there are a lot of YouTube videos out there, and some are actually helpful in terms of like holds maybe, but the the things that they will use and they say, Oh, well, it'll make it the de shedding a lot easier or knots to get out of the, you know, fur. And it really honestly, I mean, if you know your basic stuff, you can get the knots out without using or buying expensive products products. Um, I know that some people, I mean, if you have the money, if you have your own salon and you want to spend a fortune on products and you know, using them, feel free. But not everybody wants to spend or waste money that way. So there's other techniques that you can use to just do the get the job done and and move forward and be done.

SPEAKER_01

So we've got to learn that it's it's down to the basic hard work versus you know just a product that makes your dog look great. So thanks again, Christy. We love having you here. Can't wait to see you follow all the way through to the end. Thank you.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, Christy, thank you so much for sharing your story and Shannon for you know giving us more of that inside look of what you know the first six weeks really looks like in grooming school. We appreciate your insights and we will see everyone next time.
