Grooming Nightmares: Humanity Over Vanity In The Messiest Moments
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A dog grooming shop can feel like a calm spa until the second it turns into a full-blown disaster scene. We sit down with groomers Shannon and Tanya to tell the grooming nightmares that never leave you: the “flea fireworks” moment when a matted coat explodes with parasites, the day a simple nail trim became an anal gland ambush, and the kind of gross surprises that force you to learn new safety rules on the spot. If you’ve ever wondered what professional pet groomers really deal with behind the door, we’re saying the quiet part out loud.
We also dig into why these stories matter beyond shock value. Fleas and ticks aren’t just unpleasant, they can shut down a grooming salon and trigger expensive, time-consuming sanitation. A botfly “pimple” that moves, a sticker stuck deep in a dog’s nose, and worms that show up at pickup are reminders that grooming often doubles as an early warning system for canine health. We talk about matting, parasite prevention, stress behaviors during nail trims, and why regular grooming appointments can reduce risk for dogs, owners, and the whole shop.
Then we hit the messy topics people avoid: dogs in heat, overly excited male dogs that must be separated, and explosive diarrhea that hits right when you’re already behind. It’s funny, it’s gross, and it’s real, and it all ties back to our motto: humanity over vanity. If you’re a dog owner in North Texas, a groomer, or just curious about what pet care looks like in real life, you’ll walk away with practical tips and a new respect for the work. Subscribe, share this with a fellow dog lover, and leave a review with the wildest grooming story you’ve ever heard.

SPEAKER_02I'll let Tanya take the first one. I have so many. Um mine would I'm not a big creepy crawly kind of girl. So we're gonna start with that. Um Samantha and I were shaving a dog one day. He's not the greatest dog, but he was decent. Um matted to the bone, and we had to shave the top part of his forehead, and we shaved it, and there was about a hundred fleas, just go like fireworks. Like fireworks. So I always kind of he's the firework flea dog. And when we get fleas in here, we don't do fleas and ticks, but we don't do bugs. Yeah, and we don't want them in here. We're not inviting them in here. We don't, we have to stop everything that we do. We have to clean the cage. Every dog has to go away. If that dog was sitting next to another dog, then we have to stop and remove all of the animals. Everybody has to have a flea bath. We have to have somebody come out and spray. And then we have to call the owners or tell them it's gonna be really expensive because we have, you know, it's just it's a literal nightmare. It's it is and we do not want fleas. It's we don't want them. And it always happens on the day you're behind. Yeah, it's it's always when you're the busiest or behind and your your clients are, hey, is my dog ready? No. I just had to shut it all the top down. Uh for me, this happened last week, and I can't believe I almost forgot about it. Um I was there was a lady that came in for nails, and you know, we do a lot of difficult dogs in here, which we don't mind. It's it's not a big deal, it's kind of what we do. And these dogs don't love their nails done. They're very sweet, but they just come to the nails. So they were struggling. I had somebody else that I think that three dogs, and so I took the hardest one, and you know, I kind of we it's called the submission hold. So I laid them on their side and I went to lift him up to kind of lay him down on his side, and I heard this, I and felt, I heard and felt this wet on my lips. Thank God my mouth was closed. He had cheated his anal glands directly on my lips and my mouth was closed. It's a real story last week and I I couldn't talk because I didn't want to open my mouth. So I'm like gesturing while I've got this dog on the table. I need a tool, I need a toe. And finally they're all looking at me like, what's wrong with you? And I'm like and I can't use my hand. So it's like charades just your eyes. We eventually Oh gosh. And I'm like, oh, it was awful. It was absolutely awful. And I, you know, I preach all the time, do not put your face down by a butt dog. And I've never been gotten in the face, but this dog got me smack in the lips. I've I've gotten them in my hair and it's not fun, so I can only imagine all day long. I could not be clean. Oh, oh, and then there's the bot fly, right? I mean, nothing humbles you faster than when you see something moving on a dog where it shouldn't be. And that was, I mean, it's uh again, what we're gonna pull in Samantha into this. Maybe you guys have met before, but she's like, hey, um, there's that little hole on this dog that keeps getting bigger. And when you go over and look at it, we had to smother it out. We I mean it's But like if you look at it, it almost looks like a pimple, and if you squeeze it, you can see something moving in it. And so we put petroleum jelly on it, and his little head just keeps poking out of the skin. And the only way to get it is to grab it with hemostats. So you've got to wait for the bot fly to come up enough to grab it. So you've got to use your hands too. Yeah, it's grooming is not um for the faint hearted house. Or the luxurious life, but no, I'm gonna go with we've got I've we've had a dog with a sticker in his nose. I mean, uh when somebody comes in and says, you know, I saw something in my dog's nose and I wasn't sure uh what to do about it. So I just thought it would wait until you, you know, she or she's getting grouped tomorrow or in two days. Uh, and you know, I'm like, great, well, you know, I'll look at it. And I'm thinking it's crest or something, and it wasn't. There was a sticker way up this dog's nose, and I'm looking, I'm like, but oh, it is something. So you call everybody over and you look, and now, you know, we're we're part doctors and nurse and dog therapists, people therapists. We've had dogs that come in here with worms that nobody knew about. I a young boy, mom dropped off dog, boy picks up dog, and I'm not I'm not gonna say who or what kind of dogs, because they all know who they are. They know who they are. And I said, you know, I think, I think your dog has worms. And how? How would you think that? I said, Well, because they're they're crawling out of his butt. I mean, you can see them. They're real long and flat. And it's not a big deal. I mean, it's just a worming life and it's not it's not hard to do. Yeah. But nobody wanted to see it. And they picked up the dog and you couldn't see it right away. And then this boy comes, the child picks up, who's 16, and says, Can I have a towel? I he said, I don't want to put this on my seat. There's worms on it. And he almost was throwing up in my shop. It was so funny. Just I don't know if it's just because he was so young. Um, but that I mean, I just nightmare. It's a nightmare. Uh dogs in heat. Yeah. Well, if you're ever, if you've ever thought about not grow getting your dogs paid or spayed, and not so much neutered. Oh, well, you know what? I'm gonna go with neutered because we've had it on both spectrums. Yes. We've had really excitable boy dogs in here, and I mean really excited to the point we've had to separate them and let them calm down because you know, they it they're overly excited. Yes. Uh, and it's just messy and it's boy problem. So that dog has gotta be gone. For the female dog, if you know, people don't realize they're in heat, especially if they don't get groomed on a regular basis. When you're shaving or that dog sits down, I mean, it's it's just not a pretty sight, you know. Uh it's it's like it's a it's it's a legit flower. And messy. A messy flower, and it's not pretty. Um, and and uh it really does drive all of the dogs nuts. Uh I would say explosive diarrhea is in my necks, and we had that just last week too. Every just three dogs that came in, and all three just pooped everywhere when they walked in. And of course it's like, oh, I just walked my dog and it's it's all right, you know, we'll clean it up. So sometimes it's nervous. We get you have a bag, yeah. The bag is not gonna catch them. It's running. You need a lot, it's it's liquid. Yeah. And then people are walking in and we're like, excuse me, could you either wait outside or step around? And we're trying to keep the dogs out of the poo. We're trying to keep the humans out of the poo. And it's not even poo, it's like lake water. It's sludgy. So it smells and people come in and it's a lingering smell. I don't know why. And it's just a nervous poo, usually. Um, or a dog that didn't go poop because it's always on the rainy days because they're like, oh, don't want to get my feet wet. And the owner, I let them out. Well, it's wet. Nobody wants to go outside when it's wet. So then they come here and they're like, oh, finally. And then it's everywhere. It's front, it's in there. It's everywhere. I've had one on the back of the wall, like through the cage, because they didn't want to make a mess in the cage. And it's just this was last week. All three of them were like holding it in and they saved it for us. The rainy day poos. Yeah. Evy, you always get to myth with small dogs too. Oh, yeah. Like the dogs that they stink and like nothing particular. It's not just a bad dog smell. It's not like a cigarette smell. It's not a skunk smell. Not skunk. It just smells bad. And you have to wash this dog like that. We don't ask questions. I don't I I don't know. I don't care. Just grab the strongest shampoo and go for it. Maybe three or four times. When you leave work, you know, like how is your dog hair in my sock? Um, you know, and and in my coffee. And I I'm not kidding you. When I go home and I brush my hair like to go out on a nice evening, which I just brushed a hair while ago, you should have seen the amount of dog hair that came out of my hair. My dog hair. I can get the human hair out, but the dog hair I can't get out of my human brush. And it's everywhere. It's because it's stuck in my hair. It's not really a nightmare. Gross. Those just a few nightmares, and those are just a few of our women missing stories. There's many, many more. You know, we love what we do.
SPEAKER_01We do it we do it for a good time, not a fun time. Wow. Well, thank you both for sharing those stories. Always insightful and definitely entertaining. I think we'll definitely have to make a part two of this. We'll see everyone next time.
