A dog goes from matted and muddy to fluffy perfection in 60 seconds and suddenly every pet owner is wondering: why doesn’t my groom look like that, and why does it take so long? We get it. Those viral grooming videos are satisfying, funny, and honestly kind of addictive. But they also leave out the parts that matter most for your dog’s comfort, safety, and the final result.

We sit down with professional groomers Shannon and Tanya from Hound Therapy, with Sophia Yvette in the studio, to unpack what those clips don’t show. We talk about the real timeline behind a glow up, why a transformation is often a three-to-six-hour process, and how much work gets hidden in quick cuts. We also dig into the behind-the-scenes steps like prep, drying, brush-outs, and the reality that dogs need breaks and patience, not a rushed “before and after.” If you’ve ever watched a video jump from a wet dog to a perfectly dried finish, we explain what’s missing in the middle and why it’s not optional.

We also explore how social media shapes expectations. Pet owners naturally focus on the cute end result like color, pom-poms, and trendy styles, while groomers spot the real-life grind and the details that keep pets safe. Our biggest takeaway is simple: have realistic expectations, remember groomers are real humans, and treat “perfect in no time” promises as a red flag.

Let's get started.

SPEAKER_03

Those viral grooming clips make everything look quick, easy, and magical. But what's really happening behind the scenes? Shannon and Tanya talk about what viewers don't see. Welcome back, everyone. I'm Sophia Yvette, co-host and producer, back in the studio with Shannon and Tanya, professional groomers at Home Therapy. Hi, ladies, it's great to be back with you today. Now let's go ahead and jump in. These videos rack up millions of views, but talk to us about the viral grooming videos and what they don't show.

The Real Time Behind Glow Ups

SPEAKER_01

All right, well, let's start. Can I say that somebody said the word glow up to me and I don't know what that means? So I do now. We explained it to her. I I 100% understand it now. But dogs um that are getting a glow up, just like I would assume when I get my glow up, which I got not too long ago, it takes a long time. It takes a really long time. We work dogs in and out of here pretty quickly. We're working to best serve you and to, you know, manage our time so that we can give you an affordable cost for your time spent here. Um, these viral videos that are going out, it's they don't they take weeks.

SPEAKER_02

And I mean, they they're showing it on like TikTok, Instagram, things like that. They're showing like a minute, 30 seconds to a minute, maybe.

Prep Work And Breaks Get Cut

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there's there's a lot longer than that. We're we're not speed, we can't speed up the camera here. So one of the first things that it's it's uh let's say it it's not a realistic room, and it's just not realistically what we do in here with your dog. And it would be amazing if it was, but it it's not. It uh my hands cannot work as fast as a camera. Um, and neither can can my hairdresser, because you know it's a lot to to fix all this up. The older you get, the more work you need. Uh, and the dogs aren't any different. The dirtier they are, the more work they need. The longer they wait, the more work they need, the less likely they are to come in, the more work they need. So we can't, we don't want to work faster. We don't want to get your dog done in two or three minutes. Um, it's it's yeah, the glow up is not, it's it's it's a three to six hour groom on on TikTok. They take a lot of stopping breaks. You know, they cut out a lot of the parts that are not uh where the dog sat down. You know, dogs are not standing for that. Yeah, they don't show the prep work. They don't show how they got from point A to B. They show you uh a wet dog, then they show you a dry dog. You know, that's not how it works.

SPEAKER_02

I have seen some groomers that do kind of show that on social media platforms like videos and things like that. I have seen some that are starting to show it, but even, you know, six months to a year ago, there that just wasn't kind of the viralness of it.

What Groomers Notice Versus Owners

SPEAKER_01

I don't even know that those are the viral. I have a lot of people that I follow that I feel like, oh yeah, I feel her pain. Like those are all real. It's like, oh, I've been there. Yeah, I'm like, that lady's got it real. She keeps it real. So there are some people on there, and I'm like, well, that's that's great. But for the most part, it is um, it's a quick cut, right? It's the there's even a couple of people that I follow, and it is my real life. It is a day in the life of a groomer. And they've taken, you know, maybe eight dogs that they've done that day, but they didn't show their lunch break or, you know, they make fun of it. Uh, they make fun of what we're doing. And it's fun. It's fun to watch that because we feel that as groomers. We feel like, yeah, and it's still a three-minute video. So we know that we're not watching an eight-hour live stream, we're watching a video. And I guess that's kind of the point that we want to drive home is that it's it's we're not live streaming. Although we would love to, but that's not nobody has eight to hours to sit and watch us do all of our prep work and then, you know, discuss with a client how it takes in. And uh, and these videos are fun and they're great, and they they definitely a lot of these paint a real life picture of what it is that we do do. But it's in a realistic time frame, it's not what what we're doing. And I think that a lot of those um pet owners that have these dogs, they're not, they're looking at more of the the finished or they're looking at the the end cuts, these these really cute colored dogs or you know, the pom-poms and these really cute. Which are beautiful, outrageous, yeah, Asian fusion, like all of this stuff. They're looking at the end result cut and like, I love it, it looks so cute. I want my dog to look that. For me and other groomers, I think looking at it, we're looking more towards like, oh, look at that lady running out in front of the car so she could get hit because she's had a long day at the dog shop. Like those are the ones that we find funny.

SPEAKER_02

You know, it's like, did you did you drink water today? No. Did you have a lunch break today? No. No. Did you go to the bathroom? No.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it it and it shows all of the stuff that we're talking about. It shows it in a funny, you know, uh pictation of of of what it is that our uh a day in the life of a groomer would look like if it was in a short real clip.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

So there it's it's an unrealistic expectation for the groom and for the time it takes to groom it. Uh so I guess it kind of depends on what you're watching. Uh know that if you're watching those funny ones, um, yeah, it's they're comical. And it's true. We don't do any of those things. We don't eat or pee. We don't do anything fun.

SPEAKER_03

Now I have to ask you both, you know, if you could add a truth caption to every viral grooming video, what would it say?

SPEAKER_01

Ooh, I have two. I have two. Uh for me, it would be uh those cute little boot cards that you see at the end, right? Those cute little, oh, so tiny, extra small. I would just put no way AI. 100%. No way. I really think no way AI. The other one is for real. I feel your pain. Yeah. Because those those people that get it right, it can take my whole day and put it in a three-minute video and make me feel like that is exactly what I did today. Thumbs up to you. Yeah. Yeah. Thank you. Thank you for explaining what I did today. Because I couldn't have done it. Mine would be Ben there.

Realistic Expectations And Red Flags

SPEAKER_03

There you go. Wow. Any final words of wisdom before we close out today when it comes to these viral grooming videos?

SPEAKER_02

Have realistic expectations for your groom.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Grooming, your groomers are real human.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Dog grooming transformation doesn't happen in three minutes. I mean, anything good that happens in a in a 30-second video is is not good. Nothing in real life.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, it only took me 30 seconds. Okay, that's not a brag, man. That is not a brag. We we I want it to take longer. I want you to put some effort and some thought and really, really put your effort and work behind it. So yeah, just, I mean, no, they're fun to watch. And it's a great, it's a great overlist, you know, it's a it's a great um kind of peek into what we do, but it is it's not real life. Um it, you know, we're not living life. Well, I'm for sure not. I didn't know what a glow-up meant. So I'm not living life through a camera lens, right? Or through some awesome filters, which I've also learned are amazing. Like nothing is making my uh old wrinkly skin look soft and glowy uh in real life. And if we have glasses to have everybody wear that, so that's how they see me, I'm all for it. But I am a realist and no that's not true, right? I I burned every wrinkle and and and everything that I've got. And, you know, I I don't try to hide behind that. It's it's a realistic view of of what we've got. What it's not, we're not looking through a lens, we're looking through what we can actually do for you uh in in the best possible way, cost effective, time effective, and and we're trying to mash that all together. Uh, and those videos are great for a quick, a quick sneak, sneak peek. Say that fast. Um, a quick sneak peek, but it's not, it's not gonna happen in real life.

SPEAKER_02

And your groom's not gonna be perfect.

SPEAKER_01

And if you're promised that, red flags.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah. Well, thank you both for being here today. It's always a joy having these conversations with you. And I think a lot of these listeners will watch those viral clips very differently now. We'll see everyone next time.
